Thomas let the other get onto the couch. He settled beside him easily, though having two grown men fit on the couch was a bit of a daunting task. Though they managed, somehow. The brunet listened as the blond told him a bit about the night he'd been given the news. No cafe, no worried waiting. He'd been asleep... when the call had woken him up. Groggy and confused. He hadn't had those hours pass while his horror grew, like Thomas had.

The Brit had turned quiet again, as he felt Sal's gentle touches. Petting and comforting. His back, along the side of his face, his hair and even some of his facial features. His green eyes lifted then, to look up to those of blue. Sal wasn't suppose to be gentle. Yet here he was... doing just that. Soft touches...

The pain would lessen, he said. Had felt similar pain after their father had passed, but after all the time had gone by, the fresh wounds had healed over, and made life a little more bearable to live again. Thomas gave a soft nod. Time was the only real healer. But it would be... a while. Thomas didn't know how long.

His breathing was calm, as his eyes remained locked with Sal's. In those moments, it became apparent that his heart was pounding in his chest. Not from fear in his dream anymore. It was... a nervous beating. Excited. Livid even...

He cleared his throat finally, and he began to sit up a bit, eyes breaking contact. He looked about the living room quietly, as it came back to him that he'd slept here last night. On the couch no less. His hand raked back through his hair.

"... Thank you for not letting me drive to the hotel last night," he thanked the blond then glanced back to him. He smiled hesitantly, and finally got up. "Hope I wasn't intruding..." he added. Seems his politeness was returning, now that he was regaining composure.

Sal let the brunet sit up and leave the pressed close proximity demanded by lying on the couch together. Sure, he’d had liked to keep things like that and stay close, maybe even get a little closer, but now was not the time. Maybe the place, but very much so not the time. And despite what some people might think (himself included from time to time) he did have some form of self control. He could exhibit so tact from time to time. And he was putting that rarely seen skill to use right now as he let Thomas go.

He shifted as the brunet got up, Sal moving to lie flat on his back on the couch. He snorted a laugh and looked up at the other man, smirking and grinning, with blue eyes alight with humor. “No intrusion at all. I like Tipsy-Tom, he’s pretty funny.” The blond winked, teasing the other man.

Seriously though, the thanks wasn’t even necessary. Polite, but unneeded. He hadn’t thought twice about keeping Thomas here over the night. No way in hell was he going to let the man go anywhere like that. Behind a wheel or just walking out on the sidewalk – too often, those less than sober out on their own got taken advantage of in one way or another. Thomas had been safe here, maybe not totally considering the struggle Sal had gone through last night after the Brit fell asleep, but safe enough. Safer than he would have been on his own, at least.

“You want some tea or something?” He asked as he curled himself up into a sitting position on the couch and scrubbed a hand over the back of his head. “There’s coffee, of course, but I uh…” he hesitated, licking his lips, fumbling a little as he realized admitting this might be embarrassing for him. “I, uh… I was at the market the other day and they had some tea stuff so I grabbed a few. You know, in case you came around again and wanted somethin’ other than that sleeping pill Chamomile stuff. They’re all in that same cupboard if you want some.”

He snuffled almost nervously. A silly reason to be nervous, of course, but well… it was Sal. And telling Thomas he’d gone and bought tea, which Sal didn’t drink at all, in case the brunet came back around and wanted some… well, it revealed he’d spent some time thinking about the brunet. That he’d stocked up on something he liked, in the hopes that he’d come back. And if Thomas went in to look, he would indeed find a small stockpile of store bought boxes of tea: green tea, earl grey, both English and Irish breakfast tea, a peppermint one, the chamomile from before, and a lemon blossom tea. Seven different boxes of tea… just for Thomas.

Thomas had been looking over the living room, perhaps trying to find something to distract himself with. Being in such a close proximity with the blond had left him a little light headed it felt like. He tried not to think too hard on it. Emotional vulnerability plus the fact he resembled Paul... And hell the gentle touches didn't help.

At the mention of tea, Thomas looked over at the blond curiously. Even more so as Sal admitted to buying some extra tea. In case Thomas came by again. Such a little sentiment made a little flicker of warmth appear in his belly. And it rose to his face, causing the hint of a smile to appear. He didn't say anything but it was a very ... sweet gesture. "Sure. I could go for a spot of tea," he spoke.

"Could you put the kettle on? ... Just need to freshen up a bit," he added as he turned and headed for the bathroom. A smile was still on his lips as he closed the door. He looked at his face and his bedhead hair. And in that moment he realized Sal had been walking around in only his boxers and a tank top. Things had turned so casual between them. Quickly. Thomas wasn't quite sure how he felt about that. It felt safer to keep up his well groomed, gentlemanly appearance. It was who he knew how to be. But this relaxed man he saw in the mirror, it was a bit frightening. Vulnerable. To be seen when you just woke up. When you had a nightmare. Though he supposed this was special circumstances...

Thomas came back out shortly. He'd managed to get his hair to be a bit more orderly, had scrubbed the sleep from his face and his sleeping attire had been smoothed down. He'd have to change later. Fetch his clothing down stairs when he got ready to go. But for now... wearing his 'pajamas' would be alright.

Sal nodded and watched Thomas leave the room in favor of the bathroom to ‘freshen up’. Once the brunet was out of sight, he stood and stretched out his back, hearing joints and bones poke. He exhaled in pleasure, padding out into his kitchen to do what was asked of him.

He found the kettle again; still a little puzzled as to how he had the thing in the first place… must have been Paul’s. It was the only explanation he had. Recalling back to their Sunday night dinner together, Sal copied what Thomas had done with the thing. He filled it with water, turned on a burner on the stove and set things up to go… not so hard to do, actually. For some reason, he’d imagined it to be much more difficult a task to get through.

Standing there, he contemplated having some tea too. Just to try it. He contemplated the idea for all of a minute before he made a face and shook his head, turning to his beloved coffee pot and got her up and running too.

When Thomas returned, Sal was standing in the kitchen by the stove with his arms crossed over his chest and his back to the entrance. He was watching the kettle, the coffee pot gurgling off to the side and he lifted a foot to scratch at the back of a shin with his toes. He turned his head to look over his shoulder at the in coming brunet and spared a smile, noting his clear face and the more tamed quality of his dark hair.

“So which of these things are you gonna take on this morning?” He asked, lifting a hand to point at an open cabinet where he’d stacked all the teas he’d bought one on top of the other. “I don’t know squat about the stuff, so… any of those work for you?”

He wouldn’t admit it, but he was nervous again as he glanced between Thomas and the teas. What if he’d flubbed and not gotten something the brunet liked? The Earl Grey was the only one he’d been half certain about… at least, he thought that was the one Thomas had had at their little Brunch. But maybe he’d been wrong?

Thomas walked into the kitchen. This was his first time wandering through Sal's place with only socks on. No shoes this time. He noted Sal standing near the counter and stove. He took in the look of the blond from behind. He smiled faintly, when Sal turned to look at him. He approached as the blond asked him which tea he'd be having that morning. He looked over the boxes, and his green eyes widened a bit. Seven varieties. Good lord...

"... That's a lot of tea," he murmured quietly. If he drank two cups a day, he estimated it'd take over a month to get through all those boxes. He was quiet a moment or two as he looked over the different varieties, before he pulled out the English Breakfast. He closed up the cabinet then, as he looked over the label curiously. A smile tweaked his lips. It was still a thoughtful gesture, even if Sal had gone overboard. He glanced at him, spared him a smile, then opened up the box and pulled out one of the little bags. A cup soon followed, and once the pot was whistling, he lifted it up with a hot pad around the handle, and poured the hot water to let the bag seep and brew the tea he cherished so much.

Green eyes flicked to the coffee pot brew on the counter nearby and he chuckled a bit. "You and I seem to be creatures of habit... at least when it comes to what we drink in the morning," he mused softly as he set the kettle back onto the stove. He turned off the burner. He pawed around, till he opened up one of the drawers which had silverware. A tea spoon was soon dropped into the cup, and he stirred a bit, before pulling out the bag and tossing it. Thomas looked to the fridge then, and opened it up, to get out the milk.

"Where do you keep the sugar?" he asked as he poured some of the milk into the tea, capped it and put it back in the fridge shortly.

Sal smirked and shrugged, pouring himself a cup of his morning beverage of choice. Creature of habit… yeah, he supposed he was. Whether or not those habits were all such good things, was left to be said. But it was true enough. He drank black coffee every morning because it was what he’d always done, he smoked because he always had – his dad had, and so he had started too. He supposed if he really thought about it, everything he did and everything in his life could be lumped up as habit.

When asked for sugar, he reached over and slid a little ceramic pot from the corner of the counter near the wall and pushed it over to the brunet. He sipped at his hot coffee, sighing in pleasure and murmuring content sounds as the warmth spread through his chest and into his stomach. He licked his lips and nodded his chin out towards Thomas and his tea.

“That a British thing? Milk and sugar in your tea?” He observed curiously as he watched Thomas prepare his cut to his liking. “Never seen anyone put milk in tea before you. Makes sense to be in coffee to me, but never would have thought it to go in tea…” He eyed the milky cup in Thomas’ hands, expression caught between curiosity and uncertainty.

Thomas looked to the container the blond slid over. He took a few spoonfuls of sugar and stirred the brew. His eyes lifted to Sal as he asked him if milk and sugar in the was an English thing. He gave a nod. "As far as I know. My whole family drinks tea this way. Everyone I met back home did the same," he smiled a little. He took his first sip, and swallowed the warming brew and let out a little content sigh of his own. He leaned on the counter a moment or two, with the warm cup in his hands. He took a few slow sips.

"... I suppose its like you and what your father did. Black coffee in the morning. It's what you're used to. What you grew up with..." he mused softly. Pushing off the counter, he headed for the table and had himself a seat. He took a few more long slow sips. At least he'd relaxed from that scare this morning. He was pretty comfortable right then. In friendly company, with a warm drink. He spared Sal a glance and smiled a little.

"Where do you see yourself in ten years time?" he asked curiously. Sal seemed pretty content with his current life. And there was nothing wrong with that, in Thomas' opinion. He wouldn't have been surprised if Sal stated he'd probably just be doing the same thing he was doing right now. Working at 'Salvatore's', playing Scopa, spending a bit of time with his Uncle and cousin, and likely still... sleeping with whomever. Whether he'd really end up staying in the same pattern of life was really up in the air. Time tended to change people. Maybe in time, Sal would come to want something a bit more stable... At least in terms of someone to spend the rest of his life with. Or maybe he was giving the other man a little too much credit.

Sal pursed his lips and nodded. Sounded fair enough, they did what they did because that was how they’d always done it. The way family and friends had done it around them as children. They’d just taken on what they’d been taught and carried it with them. Creatures of habit, just like Thomas had said.

Swallowing some coffee, Sal watched Thomas go to the table and then joined him a moment later, snagging a small plastic container from the counter as he went. He hooked the chair leg with his foot and scooted it out enough for him to drop into it across from the brunet, setting the container between them and flipping it open to reveal rows of little square cakes inside, covered in sliced almonds and blueberries. He gestured for Thomas to help himself as the blond plucked a square out for himself and bit right in to it – breakfast.

He licked his lips and stopped chewing when Thomas asked him a rather unexpected question. It’d come out of nowhere and surprised him for a moment, blue eyes just staring before he caught himself and flicked his gaze to the side. A thoughtful frown pulled at his brows as he swallowed his bite of breakfast cake.

“Ten years from now…?” He repeated, wondering. He’d be thirty-five years old then, headed into the home stretch of forty. Approaching that line of ‘middle aged’ that so many seemed to dread. Thirty-five… ten years younger than his Pop had been when he died. Cocking his head to the side a bit, Sal seriously thought about the question. Where would he be?

“Honestly?” He thumbed against the handle of his coffee mug, “I have no idea. I mean, I guess I’ll still be here. Flippin' pizzas.” He nodded; that sounded about right. A small frown touched his brow again, “But where would I like to be in ten years? I mean, well, that little idea of yours about expandin' the restaurant to more than just pizza… I liked that. I’d like to see that be real by ten years from now. And I guess… you know,” his frown deepened. “My Pop and Ma had already been raisin’ me and Paul for four years by the time Pop was my age now. I’m not so sure where it’s gonna be comin’ from, but a kid in ten years… might be nice. I mean, I like kids and all…” he shrugged, considering thoughtfully. “Bein’ a dad ten years from now isn’t such a bad idea.”

He shrugged, lifting his coffee to avoid having to say anything else. They weren’t huge ideas or plans, but they sounded pretty good to him. Whether or not Thomas could believe a guy like him could want kids, or even like them, or want the responsibility, was beside the point.

Looking over his mug at the blond, he pointed a little once he lowered it. “How about you? Where do you see yourself in ten years?”

Thomas looked curiously to the little breakfast cakes. Not exactly something he'd pick for breakfast, but definitely fitting for something like afternoon tea. And since tea was what he had at the moment, he found it pretty easy to adjust. "Thank you," he spoke, automatically, when offered the cakes. He picked one up, observed the toppings and the like, before taking his first bite.

He ate thoughtfully as his green eyes lifted to Sal. He watched the thoughts playing around behind the blond's eyes. Still flipping pizzas. Expanding the pizzeria into a full fledged Italian restaurant. Not surprising, but nice to hear. He smiled a bit at those plans. Well, if they could be called plans. Sounded more like dreams at the moment. Sal would need a game plan to really reach such a goal in ten years, but it was doable.

What came out next though was a bit of a surprise to Thomas. Kids? The blond actually wanted kids? He blinked twice as he swallowed the bite in his mouth. Then a bemused little look rose to his face, causing the corners of his mouth to curl and a brow to quirk.

"... You'd really want a kid? ... Or kids?" he chuckled a bit. Not that he was laughing at the man. He just found it amusing. Sal's current life was fitting for a bachelor, but picturing a child thriving in the environment was hard for Thomas to see. Maybe the need for a kid though would bring out... a mother of some sort into the picture. That would mold this current life of Sal's... get him on the track to being a dad. He smiled a little. "... I never would have expected that, from you." he looked down to his tea. A child wouldn't be hard to come by really. The fate's that be made it pretty easy for a man and a woman to have one anyway, for the most part. And Sal swung both ways so...

The hard part might have ended up getting a wife into the picture. Or maybe Sal would be happier just getting a kid from a carrier... then just raising him or her on his own. Who knew... He didn't want to get into those logistics. They were for Sal to figure out. And... he didn't want to step on any toes with his thoughts.

Glancing back up to Sal, once the question was asked back at him, he opened his mouth to speak, but stopped.

Happily married.

A month ago and he could have happily blurted those two words out without a care in the world. But now... His eyes flicked back down to the golden ring on his finger. The idea of finding someone else was a painful thought right then. Seemed wrong... Even ten years down the line.

"I'd be a doctor by then. Specialization of some sort I guess. Pediatrician sounded inviting. But I also find the field of Oncology appealing as well." he smiled faintly. "Might be working in a practice, or maybe at a hospital. Maybe stay at the Johns Hopkins hospital, or see if I can get into NIH... Or I suppose if I got too home sick, I'd... go back home and find work there," he nodded. "... World needs doctors. I suppose I could work wherever I felt most comfortable," he smiled a little. His eyes went back down to his tea. If only Paul could be with him... But now he knew he wouldn't, regardless of how badly he wanted him to be. His chest tightened a little as his brows tweaked just a bit in response to the faint emotional distress.

Sal looked up at the surprised tone to Thomas’ voice. It was expected and he took no offence to it; he knew he didn’t come off as responsible on his own, let alone capable of being responsible for a child. He couldn’t get defensive about that; after all, he was aware of it himself. He nodded though, “Yah. I’d like to be a dad…” he snorted softly and flexed his hands around his mug. “Of course, I’d probably be shit at it. Don’t know anything about kids, expect what I remember from being one once.”

Plus, there was that whole important issue concerning where these kids of his would even come. From a woman, sure, but his woman? A wife? He shifted uncomfortably at the thought… he wasn’t so sure he was cut out to have a wife. He liked women, yes, but… well, he didn’t think he wanted to be with one for the long term. No, marrying some gal didn’t sound like the thing for him. But the poor kid, he or she definitely deserved better than just him.

Shaking his head clear, he lifted his gaze back to Thomas again as the brunet answered the question too. Sal snagged a second little cake while he listened, noting the way the brunet looked at the ring on his finger. Yeah… Thomas had likely already had a plan set up. A plan that head been torn to pieces by Paul’s death. Marriage, degrees and practices, likely kids of their own… there was no telling how grand the charming Brit’s plans had been. Now he was having to rebuild in the rumble…

“Why not be both?” He suggested around his mug, “Cancer in a children’s hospital. No reason someone smart like you should have to pick one or the other; you like both, do both.” He nodded once, firmly, with a small smile. He winked, teasing, “And come work somewhere around New York. Help me not suck as a father with my motherless rugrats and blossoming Ristorante italiano. You can even flip some pizzas as a side job.”

Thomas lifted his eyes as Sal proposed he work in the Oncology department of a children's hospital. A hint of a smile came to his lips at the idea. "You think I'm that smart hm?" he smirked a bit. Okay he was smart. Very intelligent. It still just seemed funny that Sal, who'd just met him, seemed to have such faith he could pull off a combination of those two practices.

The next statement though had him warming all over. An invite to be around New York. To freely interfere with Sal's life, his future children, and the restaurant he wanted to turn the pizzeria into. It spoke more volumes to Thomas than it probably should have. Unless Sal was just being polite, but considering the kind of man he was he was doubtful, then such an invitation meant he enjoyed the Brit's company. A fondness for him. Thomas would be lying to himself, if he tried to deny that he himself didn't feel a peculiar affection for the blond sitting before him.

With a soft smile on his lips, Thomas looked to his tea a moment, as he rolled the idea around in his head. "... I suppose I'll see if there's any openings after I gradate. Around here..." he mused softly. Not like he had anything tying him down to Maryland. Paul had been there. And his education was there. But Paul was gone... and once he got his degree he had no reason to stay there. His family was back in England... And Paul's family... was here, in New York.

His green eyes lifted back to Sal then. He observed his features. Familiar features that looked like Paul's. He'd been watching that face now, for a few days. And the longer he'd seen it, the more he was beginning to note, faint differences. Besides of course the obvious difference in his and Paul's grooming habits. Like when the older twin smiled, there was a distinct difference in how the smile affected his eyes and his nose, as well as the upturn of his lips. They were minor, but he was quite sure it was those little imperfections that had made their parents able to tell them apart, even it both boys had looked identical in all other ways.

With his shoulders still square and upright, from the Brit's usual posture, he lifted a hand to his mouth, as he continued to observe quietly. His mouth rubbed over his own lips and his chin faintly, when he realized there was a hint of stubble on his own face. Sleeping over without planning had left the Englishman in a very out of his element position. Really just raw, vulnerable, and not really made up how he usually was. Not that he looked bad at all with one days worth of stubble on his jaw and chin. Green eyes flicked off to the side finally, as he got lost in his own thoughts a moment or two.

"... Thank you again. For all of this. For my unexpected intrusion into your life this past week." He set his cup back down as he rolled his shoulders back as a soft smile returned to his face. "... It's been a bit bumpy but... I'm happy I came."

Sal found himself smiling as Thomas mentioned looking into hospitals in the area once he’d graduated. It’d been a selfish suggestion of Sal’s, solely for his own pleasure and comfort, his own wants, so he knew better than to really hope or expect the brunet to come down to New York when his studies were over. Thomas was a grown man and he’d end up going and doing whatever he wanted, and as distasteful as it was for the blond, Sal knew that path more than likely didn’t include him. It was nice to hear the consideration though… because it really would be nice to have Thomas around. Permanently.

He was aware that he was being observed, but he didn’t say anything about it or meet the other man’s eyes. He let Thomas look. Whatever he was looking for or at, Sal was happy to just let the brunet see it. Whatever it was. He didn’t have too much to hide at this point… well, except maybe the pesky, new and strange little feelings the man invoked in him every other moment these days. He was definitely hiding those, but he doubted Thomas would see any of that on the surface of his face.

Blue eyes did lift though, when Thomas thanked him. He shook his head, “It’s not an intrusion. Was unexpected, yah, and maybe at first I figured you’d be intruding, but…” he shook his head again, small smile in place. “But you’re not. I actually kinda like havin’ you around, you know?” He shrugged, dropping his eyes to his coffee. The small little confession was off his chest and in the open between them, honest and as simple as he knew how to make it.

Shifting, he cleared his throat and attempted to take the attention off what he’d said and revert it elsewhere. Away from his feelings and impressions. “So, what now, Thomas Hayward? Whatdya got planned the rest of the week? The rest of your time here?” He smirked, “More Shakespeare in the library?”

The Brit felt his body warm all the more as Sal admitted to enjoy having him around. It brought a smile back to his face. "I'm fond of your company, as well," he informed. He finished off his tea with a slow gulp, then he put the cup back down on the table.

What was next? He still had many months left of free time. Time to recover, time to explore, and time to travel. A thought occurred as he looked back up to meet those blue eyes with his own. "At some point, I think you promised me I'd be able to meet your uncle and cousin," he smiled a bit. "So... that's one thing. And you're suppose to teach me how to play Scopa," he teased.

There, two things he could plan for in the next couple days. Maybe. He rubbed at the back of his neck as he looked around the kitchen. "... Maybe I'll visit the Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building... Broadway," he smiled some more. "Lot's see around this place. That way I won't be bothering you too much." he cleared his throat. "Can't be good for business to close down like you did yesterday, for too many days in a row, I gather?" he added. He wasn't exactly trying to insinuate that the blond found his presence annoying. Sal himself had told him that he liked having him around. He was just trying to think of what was best for Sal and his restaurant.

He cleared his throat then as he glanced down to the little container of cakes. "... You're welcome to join me though. Only if you want to of course." he added softly.

“I did promise you that,” Sal nodded and grinned. “We’ll have to have a family dinner or somethin’. Over food’s the best way to meet people.” He’d have to talk with Jimmy on it, but they’d pull together at some point so Thomas could meet the two other remaining people of Paul’s family hanging around here. He’d also have to corner Cecelia and threaten her life a little bit, to make sure he kept in line during the whole affair… but Sal knew better than to think she’d actually behave. Little brat.

The grin grew on Sal’s face and he relaxed back in his chair, finishing his coffee while Thomas rattled off all the tourist activities he wanted to take part in. Visit buildings and points of interest, see a show maybe… and then Sal’s brows shout up high over his eyes.

“You want me to go with you?” Surprised, he stared for a moment. He thought about it… go see New York with Thomas. Wander around and visit things that have always been right there for him, but he hadn’t seen in forever. Some things he’d never even done at all, despite living in the city all his life. And doing them with Thomas… his heart jerked in his chest and something in his lungs fluttered – his entire body already deciding and up in arms with him, making sure he went along with its choice.

“Yah. Yah, sure. That’d…” he stopped and cleared his throat, resting his empty coffee mug on the table in front of him. A slow, genuinely excited smile growing on his face; if he’d had a tail, the thing would have been wagging furiously, thumbing pack in forth with his pleasure. He nodded enthusiastically, eyes lit up and clear. “That’d be great. Fun. Yah, I’d love it. Would love to. If you’re sure and all…”

The Brit gave an understanding nod. "If you're the one cooking, I'm all for it," he laughed a little. Another Salvatore Durante cooked meal sounded good. And he'd be able to meet Sal's and Paul's uncle and cousin. If Paul hadn't say much to Sal about their relationship, then he was quite sure that their relatives probably knew even less. But would he have to hide anything? Or was he better off coming clean... Maybe he'd ask Sal about it when their little dinner date was arranged and on the horizon. Right now it was simply an idea drifting around without a grounded date and time.

Though as he watched the excitement over touring around New York with him hit Sal's face, Thomas found himself very amused. He smiled softly, as the blond agreed to join him on his little adventure around the Big Apple. "Excellent" he grinned. "We can go... whenever it's best for you." he paused a moment as his brows furrowed. "Can your uncle and cousin take care of the pizzeria in your absence?" he asked quietly.

He really didn't want to somehow end up ruining the business for the blond. His father had building up from scratch. He didn't want to be the reason that the Italian man across from him would be forced out of business. Maybe he was just worrying too much...

None the less, a little bubble of excitement filled his stomach. It left him a bit giddy. Almost made him wish he could... just run off to New York City then and there with the other man. He leaned back in his chair then, as his eyes flicked up toward the ceiling in thought.
