Stretching out from the eastern kingdom of Livenshire to the northern Durn'din mountains, Knight's path was the vital artery through which caravans of merchants crossed the continent, snaking its way as far as possible from the forsaken lands. The road was dotted with towns and cities of all kinds, crossed dark forests, turbulent rivers and steep mountain passes, promised riches from far away lands but often brought death in the form of bandits, monsters and accidents. Would-be adventurers sometimes sought employment as caravan guards, and many a brave soul had made his name by defending travellers from orc and goblin attacks. The monsters came in from the forests, thirsty for blood and carnage, and hungry for gold. Most would stay away from the larger towns and cities, which were guarded too well, but sometimes an orc war-chief managed to get a strong band together and mounted an assault against the human armies. Such attacks were devastating, but they were not the worst. Sometimes, something escaped from the forsaken lands. Rumors ran wild about these misty marshes that nearly cut the continent in half. Tales of creatures that could do so much worse than just kill you. Few ever set foot there, and fewer still came back. Pador was a mining town, one of many that followed the Knight's path, a week and a half away on foot from the mountains. Cold winters discouraged the weak from settling there, but it was an important gateway between the human lands and the dwarven kingdom. Both races lived within its fortified walls, some working in the iron mines while others forged the metal into weapons, armors and hundreds of other items before selling them to merchants bound for warmer climes. Not all had been well in Pador lately. Strange attacks, slaughtered cattle, worrying reports of people being kidnapped and dragged away into the woods in the dead of the night... The population was uneasy, and the officials had sent scouts in the area to find out just what was happening. --- He moved through the forest like a shadow, a predator, carefully avoiding the last few remaining patches of snow. A longbow on his back and a pair of blades at his sides were his only companions. His coyote fur cape blurred his silhouette, blending with the browns and grays of his surroundings. He wore his reddish-brown hair tied back to keep it out of his face, which revealed a pair of long pointed ears, the left of which showed a deep cut that had healed up ages ago. The elf was searching for something, his sharp spring-green eyes darting this way and that as he moved. He paused to take a better look at a track left in the half-thawed mud, shook his head slowly, then started moving again. After a few hours, the ranger had to stop again, and finally admit to himself that he was pretty much lost. The territory was still unfamiliar to him, and even if he could find what was mysteriously attacking the inhabitants of Pador, he wasn't sure he would be able to come back to the town, not without help and certainly not by night. "Oh well..." He said to himself as he tossed his travelling pack down at the foot of a tree. "This won't be my first night away from a real bed." |

The elven ranger was not the only creature moving about that evening, and nor was he as alone as he thought he was. High above him, concealed in the shadows and leaves of the trees, a lycan watched him - sharp, bottle green eyes following his path carefully and preparing to spring down and pounce if the ranger happened to come across the lycan's camp and the people who currently occupied it. The wolf moved easily through the branches, his large padded paws gripping the rough bark easily, and his powerful legs aiding him in leaping from tree to tree to better keep his target in sight. Finally, after several hours, the elf seemed to settle down for the night, Nikolai watched him for several minutes longer to be certain that he would not get up and go traipsing about through the woods again, the lycan turned and headed back toward camp to report to Kynan what he'd seen and to change shifts with his elven friend. He heard a warning growl as he approached the camp, and he paused momentarily, his piercing eyes on his beta, Nightwhisper. "Peace, beta," he murmured gently, and grinned as the other lycan came forward to sniff him. "Welcome back, Alpha," she finally greeted. "What news?" But Nikolai only shook his head and gave the she-wolf an amused glance. "I will give my report when Ky joins us, Nightwhisper, and not before. Has he made supper yet?" The female lycan shook her great, shaggy head and dropped down to all fours, padding away on silent paws to curl up by the fire. "Bah. The pet has said it will be ready soon. He went to find herbs or some such and will return shortly." "Good. That will give me time to shift before he comes back." So saying, the tall, black-furred wolf took a square cloth package from the small belt tied at his waist, then turn and headed into the forest to shift shapes behind a large tree. Once in his human form, Nikolai stepped into the pants he kept stored in the pouch at his waist, then stepped into the circle of their camp once again to see that Kynan had returned while he was shifting. "Greetings, Ky," he murmured warmly, piercing eyes resting on his best friend. "Nikolai," returned the elf, inclining his head regally in response. "What have you discovered?" Joining his friend and his beta at the fire, Nikolai sat down on the ground and crossed his legs, then clasped broad hands together and rested them peacefully in his lap. "There is an elven ranger looking for tracks," he began, shifting his gaze first from Kynan, then to Nightwhisper, and back again. "I believe he has been sent here like others before him; to discover whatever it is that is attacking the mining town of Pador." At that bit of news, Kynan jerked his head up to pin his lycan friend with a flat gaze. "No one has yet been able to figure out what it is that's been attacking. We haven't been able to figure it out, and we live in this forest." Shaking his head, the elf lowered his gaze to finish fixing their dinner for the evening. "This ranger will only get himself killed, just like countless others have done before him." Hesitating for a moment, Nikolai finally answered. "Then perhaps we should help him." "What?!" Surprised, Ky's gaze shot to Nikolai's, stunned disbelief in his eyes. "Have you lost your senses? Those who have seen you have suspected you and your pack of the attacks. Why would he be any different?" But Nikolai was already shaking his head. "That is why you should go and meet him. Introduce yourself and offer your help. He will need you if he is to complete his task. Once he trusts you, then the pack can be introduced." "But....!" "If he finds our camp, Ky, he'll suspect us anyway. Better to meet him now and head him off." "Blast!" Knowing that what his friend said was true, the elf fell into agitated silence, keeping his focus on the meal he was preparing. When it was done, he dished it out for himself and Nikolai, leaving Nightwhisper to hunt her own dinner, as he knew she preferred. Taking his plate to the very edge of light that their fire provided, Kynan sat down and ate his meal in silence, pondering over which way he should approach the stranger elf. Finally, finished with his food and unable to procrastinate any longer, he left his plate by the fire for Nikolai to clean, then, without a word to his companions, headed off into the forest. Based upon Nikolai's directions, it didn't take him long to find the stranger's camp, and he crouched in the shadows, watching warily for several moments. Deciding that it would be best if he waited until morning, Kynan settled down at the base of a large tree, his back propped against it's rough bark, and he waited for the sun to rise over the treetops. |

He might have been lost in unfamiliar territory, but this ranger was still an elf, and elves were known for their sharp senses. This one was no exception. As he busied himself building his camp for the night, a sound made him pause. A wild animal? Perhaps. Then again, there would be no harm in making absolutely certain. He stood up in the darkness, not having found the time to build a campfire yet. Elves, though, had excellent night vision. A convenient shadow provided him with cover. Each of his steps was completely silent. He readied an arrow and scanned the night for movement... A hare hopped out from its hole. Its fur hadn't completely turned back to the brown coat of summer days yet. It sniffed around, completely oblivious. Too late, it detected the scent of the predator... The ranger grinned as he picked up the small dead animal and pulled his arrow out. He was a great lover of nature, as his kind almost always were, but he wasn't overly fond of rabbits and deer. Besides, this meant he wouldn't have to start eating his traveling rations, which were more useful in an emergency. The only problem was that he'd have to start a fire to cook it, which could betray his position to undesirable creatures. After all, he was tracking something that was bold enough to attack humans. The elf was confident that he could defend himself in case of an attack, but he wasn't that eager to defend his life so late. Then again, fire could keep away wild animals, and he was certain that he had spotted wolf tracks earlier. Pulling out a small knife, he skinned the small animal and cleaned it up so he could cook it. The pelt was soft enough to be usable, if he washed the blood off. |

Kynan watched impassively as the stranger killed a rabbit for his supper, unsurprised by the act and finding nothing wrong with it. He knew that others of his kind, in the elven city of Kelethin, would frown upon an elf harming the wildlife; but out here, they had little choice if they wanted to eat. Vivid blue eyes watched the other elf, learning the way he moved and how he carried himself. If this ranger turned out to be an enemy, the knowledge would serve him well if they came to a battle. Easily settling down for the night, Kynan only closed his eyes to rest when he'd seen the ranger make his bed for the night. He didn't want to close his eyes now and have his target be gone when he reopened them. Thus, he waited until the other elf had settled in and seemed to be sleeping. The blue-eyed elf did not sleep, per se, as he was too wary of what other beasts and creatures lurked in the woods, but he dozed off every once in a while, then decided that it would serve him better to rest in a tree. There weren't many animals in the forest who could climb a tree with ease, and it would make remaining unseen by the ranger that much easier. Thus, scaling the tree he'd been resting against, Ky pulled his bow off it's harness and rested it in his lap, propped his back against the sturdy trunk of the tree, stretched his long legs out on the limb he rested on, and closed his eyes. When morning dawned, the sun just beginning to rise over the horizon and tinting everything it touched with a lovely golden hue, Ky sat up and tilted his head first to the right, then to the left, sighing quietly at the relief he felt after popping his joints. Waiting until he was sure the ranger was up and about for the day and was in the process of breaking his camp, the elf stood and stretched, then strapped his bow diagonally across his body before beginning the descent back to the ground. Once his feet had touched solid earth, he carefully stepped into view of the ranger. Quickly, he removed his bow and lay it on the ground at his feet in a show of peace. "I greet you, stranger, and welcome you to the forest. I am Kynan." Regally, he inclined his head in a shallow bow as he introduced himself, then stood straight and proud, his long hair blowing gently around him in the soft breeze as he waited for the stranger's name. |

The elf paused in mid-preparation, obviously a little taken aback by the sudden irruption, and the strange peace-greeting ceremony that followed. Then, a wide smile spread over his lips. "Hey, Kynan. I'm Maelo. It's nice to meet you!" There was a strange edge to his voice, as if he was uneasy with the elven language... which made no sense. Maelo was an elf, there was no doubt about it, even though he was currently employed by a human village. In truth, there were signs that he was not from Kelethin, but from the kingdom of Aurel'Dian, which lay much further away, completely on the other side of the forsaken lands. His accent confirmed this. He glanced around, as though expecting more of his race to jump out from behind the trees. When it became obvious that Kynan was alone, Maelo's smile faded slightly, and he remembered that he had no idea where he was at the moment. It wasn't that he was incompetent as a woodsman, far from it. He knew every single plant, how to use it for medicinal purposes, the calls of at least twenty common bird species, how to use every single bit of an animal... His true problem was that he kept getting distracted. This was something a little embarassing to ask about, though. Eyes downcast, the elf felt the warmth of a light blush on his cheeks. "If you're native from around here... do you think you could give me a hand? I came from the village nearby, but I ventured a little too deep in the woods and I can't find my way back." |

Kynan watched impassively as the stranger made his greeting, one brow twanged high in confused amusement at the chipper and enthusiastic greeting. He immediately recognized the accent, but he made no comment on it. It was no concern of his where this elf came from, any more than it was Maelo's concern where Ky himself was from. While it was true that he'd not met many Aurel'Dian elves, the accent was different enough to be noticed right away. Filing that small bit of information away for late usage, that single brow on Kynan's forehead hiked even higher at the request for help back to the 'nearby' village. Unsure if he was being toyed with, or this elf truly didn't realize how far he'd traveled, Kynan studied him quietly for a moment, his brows drawn together in a slight frown. Finally, he answered, "There is not a village anywhere near here. The closest one is over 10 miles to the east." Pointing, he indicated the direction. "Perhaps you traveled farther than you thought?" he suggested gently, not wanting Maelo to think that he was trying to be cruel or mean. Not everyone had a good sense for direction, especially in the woods, where the trees looked so alike and nearly unidentifiable from each other. Crouching, Ky picked up his bow and strapped his across his bare chest, then rose with a slight smile. "I will take you to the town, though it will take us most of the day to get there. Are you nearly ready to leave?" |

"Ten miles??" Maelo groaned softly. "I didn't think I went this far into the forest! I guess time flies when you're having fun, hmm?" This did explain why his feet hurt from all the walking. As agile and strong as he was, the elf's toughness had its limits. Maybe he would've been better off with real elven boots on his feet rather than a borrowed pair, made for humans who, in general, had larger feet. Oh, sure, he could've asked for some ladie's boots, but there was, even for elves, such a thing as pride, and besides, he didn't fancy any of the available designs. Maelo felt a surge of guilt towards this kind stranger who had offered to help him so generously. "To be honest, I've been searching around for something, and if you could just point me in the right direction, I think it'd be much more profitable for the both of us. I don't want to cause you any trouble." It wouldn't be hard to tell that Maelo might very well end up getting lost again, no matter how detailed Kynan's indications would be. Though it was harder to tell for their kind, he looked and acted like a very young person, maybe a bit too young to be straying this far away from his home village. Certainly not over fifty, maybe not even thirty. Not a child anymore, but certainly not an experienced adventurer yet. |

Kynan raked his gaze slowly of Maelo, considering the idea of simply giving the other elf directions and then leaving him be. It wasn't his responsibility to see that Maelo got where he was going, nor to make certain he found the creature who was causing all the trouble. And Ky was nearly certain that that's what the other elf was doing in the forest; searching for clues that might lead him to whoever had been attacking the people of Pador. Finally, the hunter only shook his head, long brown hair moving gently against his back with the motion. "It's no trouble," he murmured, blue eyes piercing through the early-morning gloom and fog that still rode low to the ground. "I need to head that way anyway." Pausing briefly, he stumbled over the first lie he'd ever told. "I-I-I'm searching for... whatever it is that's been... attacking Pador." He hoped that the revelation would entice Maelo to open up to him and admit that he, too, had been searching for the creature. If he didn't, how was Kynan to help him search as Nikolai wanted? Patiently, he waited for a reply, then, growing restless and deciding that they could talk as they moved through the forest, he turned around and began to lead Maelo toward the town he'd spoken of, his footsteps sure and certain of where he was going. |

"That's exactly what I'm doing, too!" Maelo confirmed with a soft chuckle. He could tell the other elf looked unsure about this... upset, maybe? Well, it wasn't his buisness to ask. After all, it wasn't like they knew each other well. Despite this, Maelo felt a certain... well, it couldn't be called an attraction, not in the usual sense of the term. He longed for companionship, since the few friends he had made after... getting here were busy. Besides, there was something about this stranger that gave him a reason to stick around: he was an elf, too. Maelo picked up the last of his supplies, which actually weren't much. He hadn't exactly planned to spend the night in the woods, it just happened this way. Quite frankly, he didn't mind. It wasn't as if this had been his worst night ever. Actually, sleeping in the woods like this was downright pleasant. Nostalgic, too... The elf shook his head. No need to think about it, not here. He had a task to accomplish! He was even getting paid for it, too. Not that Sir Adaric, one of Pador's prominent noblemen, needed to give him money to convince him to do a bit of work. After all, Maelo owed him his life. "We should travel together, if you would have me. I'm no weaponmaster, but I can fight." He offered. "Besides, it'll be easier to track our enemies down with an extra pair of eyes and ears!" |

Kynan arched an eyebrow at the suggestion that they travel together, though he was careful to keep his face averted lest Maelo think he had ulterior motives. Well, he did, really, but they weren't negative ones, so he had no reason to feel that guilt that worried at him like an insistent little flea. Rather, he should be pleased that his plans were falling so neatly into his own lap, partially provided by Maelo himself. Brushing the feeling aside, the hunter inclined his head, still walking easily and nearly soundlessly through the forest. "A good point," he murmured quietly, his eyes on the ground in front of him, looking for any tracks that might tell him about the creatures who had passed this way. After several moments of traveling in silence, Ky asked curiously, "Do you have any magic?" Turning to glance over his shoulder, his bright blue gaze raked over Maelo from head to foot before turning around and focusing his attention in front of him once again. "I have some minor abilities, but nothing that would win any battles. Mostly a bit of healing; some creation magic." He shrugged, then said, "That's all, really," and fell into silence once again. He hoped that the journey to Kalimdor wouldn't take all day, but it was a long way, and, he'd noticed, the other elf was not wearing proper foot gear. With a sigh, Ky stopped and turned around to face Maelo. Gesturing, he indicated his companion's feet, saying, "Those will give you blisters before the day is out. Here." With a quick motion, he had a pair of soft doeskin boots of a plain design sitting on the forest floor. They were unremarkable in appearance, but were sinfully soft and would conform to Maelo's feet to provide maximum support and comfort. "Wear these. Your feet will thank you for it." |

Maelo was not one to travel in silence, unless an interesting bird was calling and he tried to identify it, or he was sneaking up on a family of deer nibbling on the undergrowth... which happened a lot more than it should, considering the nature of the elf's mission. But still, having a companion delighted him, especially someone else he could speak in elvish with. Kynan's question made him laugh out loud. "Oh, Twelve Gods, no! I'd likely do something unspeakably dumb if I tried my hand at magic in a fight, believe me! I might be able to do that quick-growth druid trick, maybe, but..." He gave a small shrug. "That'd be cheating. My grandfather would tan my hide if he heard I'd messed around with a plant by using magic, I wouldn't put it past him." He paused, thoughful, then patted the hilts of the longsword at his hip. "No, I'm a ranger, skilled in weapons of all kinds. Well, swords and bows in my case. After all, a wolf does not need pretty sparks to bring down a deer." True, wolves didn't have the advantage of thirty-four inches of sharp tempered steel either, but a blade used your own physical strenght, something Maelo could respect. Swords and bows felt real, whereas magic was dangerous. No, better stick to what he knew. The ranger let his mind and eyes wander as they traveled, sometimes pausing to take a better look at an interesting plant. He knew he was slowing them down, but this was something he just couldn't help. No wonder he got lost the day before. Kynan's offer brought him back down to earth, or, rather, out of his daydreams. For the first time, Maelo looked truly hesitant about this. In the end, he shook his head and handed Kynan's boots back. "I'm wearing thick socks and my feet are used to worse, I think I'll be good. Thank you for the generous offer, though." Well, okay, he wasn't telling the whole story. In truth, Maelo just wasn't... comfortable with the idea of removing any piece of clothing in front of someone else. A stupid thing to worry about, especially since he WAS wearing three pairs of socks in these boots, but still. Besides, he felt like he still owed his human friend for the clothes he "borrowed on a permanent basis" (among other things). Trading his man-made boots for the other elf's gift felt like a betrayal. |

Kynan arched a brow when his offering was refused, but he was neither insulted nor irritated by it. He simply shrugged and waved his hand once again to have the boots disappearing as quickly as they'd originally appeared. That done, he turned around once again and led the way through the forest, careful to keep his pace slower to accommodate Maelo's curious glances at everything around them. It would take longer to reach Kalimdor that Ky would have liked, but he said nothing. Instead, he focused his gaze and his thoughts on the many animal tracks that crisscrossed their path on the forest floor. He saw rabbit, deer, elk, and bear, but there was something else mixed in occasionally, as well; something larger than average and possessing a print the likes of which the hunter had never seen. Finally, nonplussed and frustrated that he couldn't figure out what sort of creature belonged to such tracks, he halted and called Maelo up to have a look. Pointing out the massive, irregularly shaped tracks, Kynan said, "I've never seen anything like it in all my time in the forest." Turning bright blue eyes up to look at his companion, he asked, "Have you any idea what manner of creature made these tracks?" |

Maelo almost skipped over when he was called. "You found some tracks? I'm GOOD at those!" He chirped. His chipper mood quickly crashed down when he got an actual look, though. There was no mistaking it, no matter how much he wished he was wrong. He'd seen the feet that made those tracks often enough... "I had a feeling this'd be the ones we're after..." He said, his voice as calm as possible... but there was a hint of something else underneath, something the young ranger just couldn't conceal. Fear? Or maybe... anticipation? They were too far from the edge of the forsaken lands, he though at first. Then again, they were known to have strayed well into elven lands before, so it wasn't completely unheard of. Bold move, for the elven race's worst adversaries and ancestral enemies. "These are orc tracks." Maelo announced gravely. "They wear strange boots that leave the three toes free. I guess they like feeling the mud between there." Orcs. Well, he was going to face them again one day or another, and now he had his weapons with him. A dangerous gleam lit up Maelo's spring green eyes. |

"Orc, is it?" Light brown brows, straight slashes on his pale face that were the exact shade of his long hair arched dramatically in surprise. "Are you certain?" Then he waved away the question with one graceful hand, an agitated frown pulling the skin of his forehead into light creases. "Never mind, of course you are. All right.... first thing is to get to Kalimdor. I'm low on supplies myself, and the respite would be welcomed. I have not slept on anything other than the ground for nearly a year." A small smile turned up the corners of his expressive mouth, and he confessed, "A bed, even one in an inn, would be a nice change." As he turned to face the tracks again, however, the smile disappeared and a look of intense concentration suffused his features. "Then we shall have to set out to find the orcs and organize an army before they can attack Pador again. Since I assume that was your original goal, anyway, it should go all the quicker with two of us." Looking up and over his shoulder at a movement in the bushes behind them, Kynan relaxed only slightly as a deer moved onto the path, twitched it's nose at them, and turned its attention to the crisp green leaves of the bush and thereby ignoring the two elves completely. "I would feel much better the quicker we can get to Kalimdor, so I shall ask that we quicken our pace in an effort to reach the town before nightfall." Despite his words, there was no fear or hesitation in either his movements or his voice, and his stride, when he rose and began to lead the way once again, was brisk, though comfortable. These were hids woods; he'd lived in them and run wild in them a child. There was nothing native there that he did not know about and could not recognize. |

Maelo had other plans, though. Acting as though he hadn't heard a single word Kynan said, the ranger went on to follow the trail. "Go wherever you like... no one knows if we'll be able to find it again if we leave now." The elf was clearly ready to attack a whole camp of orcs if he had to. There were, he counted, only a few tracks here, less than a dozen individuals, but he would have acted the same if there had been a hundred of them. Not even glancing back to see if Kynan was following, Maelo forged on, eyes on the orc tracks, completely focused for once. When he had moved with the grace of a wild animal the day before, it was now clear that said wild animal was a predator.
