Darkness. Fear. He couldn't see them, but he knew they were watching him. He couldn't move. "Unit A01. Respond." His arms felt like lead. Wires went through his skin, through his neck, behind his ears... or was he imagining them? "Unit A01. Respond." He tried to force his eyelids open. Were they even shut? He couldn't tell. "Unit A01!" The voice, now, this felt real. He knew it from somewhere, but... where? His memory was fuzzy. Who was he, anyway? "Unit A01, respond right now!" A scrap of himself fought back. Ah, yes... "Unit A- " "My n-name... 's... Lucas!" He wanted to yell this defiantly, to scare the voice back so it would leave him alone, but his voice couldn't do this. His throat felt raw. Had he been screaming lately? "Damn... the process is still incomplete. Go on, Stevens." "Sir." Pain took over his body, coursed through his nerves, lit him on fire from the inside. It lasted forever. The last shreds of himself were torn away mercilessly. ----- BF industries was a giant among giants. To think that, a few decades ago, no one had heard of them! They were now the leaders in robotic technologies, the first who had made and commercialized the Guardian Angels, large robots with the purpose of keeping their owners safe. The president of the company himself owned seven of these mechanical bodyguards, the very best of them, with the latest gadgets. People said this was because he didn't trust humans at his side anymore. How such a cold, calculating man could have married a woman and fathered a son was a mystery. The Guardian Angels were still mostly kept by the very rich, although some of the more recent models were almost affordable for the ordinary people. Rival companies had been quick to jump on the giant robot bandwagon, and though models by Toyota and Subaru could be seen everywhere, the BF models were far superior to the rest. One of these was now waiting outside Peregrine Academy, a private school for the richest of the rich. It was an older model, perhaps even one of the prototypes, but some of the details showed that it had been upgraded quite regularly, like the dynamic shape of the shoulders, the brand new hydrolic leg joints and the customized face features. On its chest was painted, in shiny black paint, the serial number "A01". The Guardian Angel waited patiently. Soon, classes would be over and its master would come back. It looked forwards to this. |

Travis Beurfort walked out of the school as the final bell rang out. His black hair was messier than usual and he seemed worn out. He slid a hand through his hair, ruffling the soft strands even more. He walked alone, unlike the majority of his classmates who were bunched up laughing and having a good time. He only smiled when he saw the Guardian Angel waiting for him. "Hello A01." He smiled at the droid and patted it's arm, feeling tiny in comparison to the being even though he himself stood over the heads of most his classmates. "I do hope you were not waiting too long?" he asked and continued to walk, knowing the droid would follow. "We are going to visit mother today...We need to stop and buy flowers." He glanced down at the new hydrolic leg joints, he was glad his father did not just replace the droid, as he was quite fond of A01, but constantly upgrading him seemed a shame.. why not just build a new body for the droid and transfer the stored data and AI? He shook his head to himself and shifted his bag on his shoulder. It was quite a bit lighter than usual as he had forgone carrying his camera today. Travis tried in vain to fix his hair as he walked into the flower shop, he liked to look good and hold the Beurfort air, somehow if he didn't it always made it back to his father and he would get a lecture when the man deigned to join he and his sister for supper. He sighed and shook his head, he seemed to be doing it a lot today. He paid for a new vase of Purple Irises and a nice bright yellow rose and walked out again, carrying the unique blown glass container in his arms. "I think mother will like these." he smiled at the droid. |

A01 seemed to come alive when its young master greeted it. Its facial features were barely mobile, but someone who knew where to look might have discerned a smile. "Do Not Concern Yourself. Time Is Of No Consequence." It replied to Travis' question. As the boy expected, it followed him dutifully. The sight was quite bizarre, if you were not used to it: a rich young man in his school uniform, being followed by a mechanical monster twice his height as one would be followed by a beloved puppy. Travis wasn't alone, though. Those who were bolder even rode on their Guardian Angel's shoulder, clinging on their huge robotic head. Some concerned parents had tried to make the practice illegal, but kids seldom listened when they could do something this "cool" instead. A01 stood outside the flower shop as its master searched for a present. It wasn't allowed inside, unfortunately. Few doorways were designed for huge robots that weighed more than most cars. It didn't seem to mind, though. Could it actually mind? Some would have argued that no, artificial intelligences were not supposed to have feelings anyway. A01 was quite unique in that regard, not that anyone ever asked its opinion. The robot knew it would do anything in its power to defend the young Travis, not because it was programmed to, but because this was the right thing to do. It turned around when Travis came out and examined the gift. "A Good Choice." It approved. "She Is Fond Of Such Colors. She Will Be Pleased To See You." |

"I'm glad you think so A01... would you carry it for me until we get to the hospital?" he asked, knowing the robot would more than likely say yes, but also hoping it would deny, if only for his own assurance it wasn't just a robot meant to follow him around. He smiled up at it, Travis knew it was just a robot, but he swore it smiled every time he came out of school. It was just his imagination though. His desire for a real friend. He often wondered if the robot was human, would it hate him? He wasn't the worst teen, he did not ride the robot, the only time he'd ever let the thing carry him was when he'd sprained his ankle while out taking photos and couldn't walk back. It was a body guard, not a toy. His father had explained this to him quite throughly when it had first been given to him after all. He sighed as he forced himself out of his thoughts. He sighed again, resting his side on the robot's hip. "Visiting mother always makes me depressed.." He muttered. "She's not going to last much longer..." he said and looked up at the robot. "The doctors pulled me aside last time and explained it to me...I got the medical books from the house library and looked it up again and what they told me was actually worse than they made it seem.. her stomach is starting to reject everything, even water, she's not sleeping, or..." he stopped talking again, pressing his nose to the yellow rose. "For how much technology we have...why can't we just keep someone alive? I want my mom!" he was so tempted to stamp his foot, but he didn't of course. He was rarely bratty, but when it came to his mom he could be the biggest baby. She'd always been there for him, he was a right and true momma's boy. And he didn't deny it. |

With fingers that shouldn't be able to perform such a delicate task, A01 picked up the vase and held it in its cupped hands. This was what made the BF industries Guardians vastly superior to the cometitors, precision up to within a fraction of an inch that could allow the clumsy-looking robots to pick up something as fragile as a snow crystal without breaking it. As if they had an actual sense of touch. "It Is Sad To See A Close One Leave." A01 commented, trying to reassure its master. "She Has Suffered For A Long Time. Do Not Lose Your Hope, There Have Been Some Who Have Survived The Same Illness." It could see that Travis was upset, but there was so little it could do to help. Being near the boy was, for the moment, the best it could do. |

He sighed "I know that... but when she's gone... It will just be dad." He shook his head, standing up straight from where he'd been leaning. "And you and I both know he'll drive me mad." He started walking towards the hospital. "I think he said he'd be visiting mother today as well...I do hope he doesn't get caught up in work again." he mumbled to himself mostly. "Mom really misses him." He looked up at the robot. "Thank you for carrying it A01." He smiled kindly at the robot and looked down to his feet. He sighed and slid a hand through his hair again, leaving several strands out of place. "I just don't want to lose someone else important to me..." He rubbed the left side of his chest. "My best friend's body still hasn't been found... No one can figure out where he's been the last 6 years." he muttered, scuffing his foot a bit as he walked. "Nothing I can do about it." Every once in a while he would end up thinking like this, especially after new reports on his mother's condition. "They say there's no way she's gonna survive this. It's too far along and spreading rapidly to other organs... Her liver almost gave out." He watched the hospital in the distance as it got closer. |

"Must I Understand That You Still Have Not Connected With Any Of Your Classmates?" A01 asked with surprising concern. This wasn't one of the pre-set questions all the Guardian AIs came with, like "How are you today?" and "Have you thought about today's engagements?". Most of the Guardians were programmed to respond to their masters' feelings and answer their questions to the best of their capacity. Well, A01 was a prototype, after all. It was a lot brighter than most robots out there, even others from BF industries. "Your Mother Is Still Lucid. It Is A Small Mercy That Her Mind Is Still Sound After What She Has Endured. Should You Request It, I Can Connect With The Hospital's Computers To Give You Up-To-Date Information About Her Status." It offered, knowing very well that this could be illegal... but if it could make Travis feel better, A01 would repaint the sky pink. |

(omg sorry I made you wait! It never sent me the email!! ) He glanced over at the robot, the question and offer confusing him slightly. A01 had done such things before. "No. I do not like my classmates. None of them are..." he frowned slightly "None of them understand me like Lucas did." Travis slipped his hands into his pockets. "And...while your offer is convincing A01, I am positive that is illegal and I'd rather you be by my side than taken away from me. You're the only one I've really got anymore understand?" He patted the robot's leg and continued walking. They got up tot he hospital with out any trouble. He slid his bag off. "Thank you A01. I'll be right out.. please keep my bag." He held the item out to the robot and gave a sweet smile, one reserved for the robot and his mother... it used to be for Lucas as well. He sighed a bit and tried to push his friend's memory down a bit more. It had been six years, if he were any other teenager he would have gotten over and pointed out his friend's face in year books and photos with fondness. But he had been attached to Lucas more than his own mother. And for a momma's boy that is saying a lot. |

A01 happily held his master's bag. It could technically come inside the hospital, at least on the ground-level floor, provided that this was an emergency. Visiting Travis' mother, though, was something it wasn't allowed to do. Before her health had degenerated, she had always been nice, though a little scared of it. Understandably so. She was not aware of the truth. Only the master's father and a few technicians knew. Not even A01 had retained any knowledge of it... As it waited for its master to come back, the Guardian's thoughts came back to what the teen had said. It had noticed its master's loneliness well before Travis had told it about his problems. A name often came up during these talks, a name it felt should be familiar but wasn't. It had never met Travis' old friend, it had been built after the boy had disappeared after all. A replacement, in a way, but a flawed one. A01's eyes dimmed a little. It knew it could never be the same as a human friend for his master. There were times when Travis opened up to it, times when they were... almost close. Almost friends. These never lasted, though. Every time came the reminder that A01 was a machine. Soulless, artificial. Helpless. Travis was fond of it like someone was fond of a reliable car. Somehow, it couldn't help but feel a twinge of apprehension towards this boy who still haunted its master's thoughts even years after disappearing. Could a machine even be jealous? |

Travis smiled at the robot as he walked away, holding the flowers tightly. He tapped on the vase as he took the elevator up, watching his Guardian Angel until it was out of sight. "Here I go.." He had a bad feeling this was going to be the last visit he had with this mother. His gut was sinking the closer he got to her room. But then again, he got this feeling every time he came. Every Wednesday. He gave a shaky sigh as he walked in. "Hello mom..." He said with a sweet smile, pushing away the bad feeling as soon as he walked in the room. Her pale face was lit up at seeing him, she slid up, her frail weak body looking like it could fall apart any moment. For how advanced they were the Chemo still didn't do much but cause her more pain, even if it kept the cancer from spreading too fast. "I brought you new flowers!" he held them out to let her take the irises and the yellow rose. "Thank you Travis.." She smiled and smelled them before putting them on her bed side table, next to a stack of photos he'd brought her about a month ago. "How are your studies going?" She asked and patted the bed next to her legs for him to come sit by her. "The same as usual mother..." he said and laid next to her, letting her rest her head on his shoulder. He gently pet her arm, her skin felt dry and cracked, as if he could... rip it like a piece of paper. He frowned deeply, pushing away the thoughts. His mother was dying, and she was suffering. He could see it in her eyes.. part of him wanted her to die so that she could be free of the pain, the stress. But the other part, the less logical part of his mind wanted to cling to her, have her with him forever, his dear mother. He stayed for forty minutes, gently moving her head off his shoulder where she had fallen asleep. He kissed her cheek. "I love you mother...but I don't like to keep A01 waiting too long...I will see you next week." He stroked her cheek and turned to leave, he had to find the doctors to check on her health before leaving. Dr. Vern was easy enough to find, see a hot nurse, chances are he's around the corner staring. Travis rolled his eyes as he walked up behind the man. "Dr. Vern... How is my mother's condition?" The man jumped, looking back at the messy haired boy. "I'm afraid she's worsened, the Chemo isn't doing much for her any more, she's terribly dehydrated and her body is rejecting most of the liquids we push into her system...I've wanted to avoid these words Mr. Beurfort, but I'm afraid she doesn't have much time left." "Have you told her this?" "Not yet sonny... I'll call your father before I do, as he requested." "Thank you Dr. Vern...." he smiled and walked away. He walked out side, head down, moving silently over to A01. "Thank you A01.." he said softly and put a hand on it's arm. "Let's go home.. I"m sorry i made you wait so long." He spoke softly. |

The Guardian, as acutely aware of its masters' feelings as always, offered as muc support as it could. "There Is No Need For Appologies. Time Is Never An Issue To Me. You Can Stay For As Lond As You Need To." It held up Travis' bag and slid it over his shoulder. It could have carried the item back home, but the teenager usually didn't let it do this. Not, A01 understood, because he didn't think it could, or because he didn't trust it not to break anything in the bag. The robot had shown time and time again that it was an extremely advanced model. Sometimes, they walked past another Guardian Angel carrying both its master and its masters' belongings with ease. Most kids had at least tried to climb up their robot bodyguard once, but Travis never did. A01's master could be so mature... as if he had forgotten how to be a child. At other times, he whined and cried and wanted nothing more than to be hugged and reassured. There were other times still when Travis would quietly stare at his feet, deep in thoughts. Living in regret. It felt wrong... the boy was too young to be burdened by his past like this. A01 decided to try and get its master out of his depressed mood. "Master Travis, Have You Heard About The Gladiators Club?" It asked, picking an event that had happened recently. Some rich kids had realised that the Guardian Angels could be much more interesting than just as bodyguards or rides. The gladiators club was an expensive hobby... and a VERY destructive one. Pitting your robot against the opponent's could end up tearing appart an impressive chunk of scenery. Spectacular, yes, but the loser ended up having to replace most of his Guardian to get him operational again. A01 was not aware that its model was very popular among the gladiators, though. |

>< I keep not getting notifications! >< Even though I am subscribed. I'm sorry I keep taking so long!! ) He walked along, hands clutching the straps of his bags. He didn't speak, lost deep in his thoughts until A01 brought up the Gladiators Club. He frowned deeply. "A01 where have YOU heard of this club?" he looked up at the Guardian Angel incredulously and crossed his arms. "The other kids talking about it? They are foolish.." He hadn't ever thought about putting A01 in that predicament. What use was a destroyed or injured robot? "I had never thought of putting you into the situation..." he spoke softer this time. "It does look fun to watch. But... I'd be so worried about someone having illegal modifications to their Guardian Angel and having you ripped to pieces. Father would surely not be pleased with me if I brought you home in pieces!" A01 was acting a bit off, perhaps he should mention it to his father. A01's AI was probably top of the line and not available to the public yet though. That had to be it. Being the son of the owner had it's perks. He punched in the code to the gate of the mansion his father owned and waited for the gate to be wide enough for both him and A01 to pass through at the same time. The scanners in the wall scanned them both to make sure they belonged there. As always they passed through with out any issue. |

(If you like, I can send you an IM after each post) A01 quickly ceoorected its master. "It Was The Other Guardian Angels Who Told Me About This. The One Identified As X2243, Model Michael, Has Assisted To Such A Match. If You Remember Well, It Belongs To One Of Your Comrades, Charles Devickson. It Would Be The Reason For X2243's Recent Remodelling, It Seems." It was the first time the Guardian ever mentionned anything about speaking with others like it. They hadn't been made for this, but some of the Guardians were sufficiently advanced to do it. A01 had always been the one initiating a conversation, and so far most of the other robots had seemed... distant whenever it did. More and more of them, especially the newer, more expensive models, were getting chatty these days. The builders were not aware of this yet. A01 didn't know it was acting abnormally. It didn't mention that Travis probably wouldn't have to be worried about it getting torn appart. A01 was made to protect the boy, after all, and could very well hold its own against a formidable opponent. It followed Travis through the gates, into the mansion. This building was made to accomodate robots like it, thankfully. It left less place for decorations, but meant it was a lot more sturdy than any regular house. |

(Oh that would be great! I've been getting all the notifications for my PMs also.) "They spoke to you?" he walked towards his bedroom, one of the few on the first floor. Upstairs were not as easily accessible to the Guardian Angels. He dropped his bag inside and slid his shoes off. "Tell me more A01.... Do you wish to compete in this? The way you bring it up makes it seem so." He went to his closet and pulled out clothes he preferred to wear when not in school. "If you think you could win and not get too badly injured or torn up we could.. give it a try," he smiled slightly, "but only if you think that you are capable." he undressed down to his boxers and pulled his jeans and button down on, rolling the long sleeves up to his elbows. "I have some money i could put towards repairs if need be." He seemed to be honestly considering this. |

A01 stood guard while its young master got changed. The boy's change of heart about this Gladiators' club seemed to amused, as much as a large robot could look amused. It tilted its head on the side, as if contemplating the idea. "It Might Not Be Wise To Participate In Such Activities." A01 finally said. "This Unit's Duty Is To Protect You, And Your Esteemed Father Would Likely Not Appreciate His Machines Being Put To Such An Use." Of course, Travis would have the final word in this affair. A01 could definitely hold its own in a fight, but it didn't particularly want to. Appart from watching over its master and making sure he was happy, the robot didn't have many desires in life. |
