And there it was again. Confidence, confidence. He knew dancers were confidence people but holy geez. This was a bit much for Mitchell to really want to handle. Besides, confidence was something one learned over time, wasn't it? So maybe ... just like his rhythm ... he'd have to practice it. Everyday. That made sense. It just seemed weird that he'd have to practice confidence. Here he'd been thinking he would need to work on his technique or balance or something. Ya know, to look better. But to feel better .... was kind of a full turn for Mitchell.

Mitchell gave his fun attention to Jeff when he spoke, however and as he did, he did his best to imagine if that was possible. At first, he couldn't think of anyone who was neutral about his dancing but the more Jeff kept talking, the more he actually pictured his father. Come to think of it, his father had never really brought up any of the times that he'd caught him dancing ... and he'd never really degraded him about it either. Sure he teased him but that was normal in their house. If someone didn't get belittled at least once during the day (and it was usually him, the youngest, anyway) then that was just weird.

And, well, the last part was easy. Every single one of his brothers. If they ever knew about his dancing obsession, they'd surely be a hard crowd to please. Mitchell had never really thought about trying to win them over though. It seemed like such a waste of time but he didn't know anybody who even really knew much about his dance skill enough to praise it so ...

"That ... actually makes sense." He spoke, the surprise even in his voice. "But, I mean, the first time I'd really danced in front of people since I was back in elementary school was in your class today. When you pulled me up front, I was so nervous I'm surprised I actually went through with it." But then the remembered the smiling faces of the students and their little signs of encouragement and he kind of understood Jeff's advice a little more. "I know closing my eyes was a really lame way of going about it ... and that backward bow was a humiliating consequence of that action ... but ... I dunno know. It's just easier, ya know? Like it's just me and the music." He closed his eyes a moment, remembering it fondly.

He glanced over at Jeff, unsure. "That probably sounds stupid to you. Sorry, it's just new to actually be talking to somebody about this let alone a star player in the field."

He gave a huff of a sigh. "Confidence ..." He whispered quietly to himself and brought a leg up to rest his forehead against his nose. "I dunno, sir." Mitchel spoke normally. "Imagining my father and brothers doesn't sound like something that would build confidence .. and I don't really have any other options. They fit the bill right enough but ... I dunno."

He closed his eyes against and pressed his nose into his knee before resting his chin against it. "Confidence .." He whispered to himself again, trying to picture it in his mind.

Jeff nodded, "Yup, confidence is a big deal for dancing. You could take the greatest dancer in the world, and have them dance the same way everyday, but you can really tell when they're confident in themselves when they dance. Their posture is better, they smile almost the entire time as they have fun, they don't make as many mistakes when they're confident in themselves, and just generally do a better job when they have confidence. I don't see much room for improvement of your moves perse, more like you just need to polish your dancing skills up a bit. You dance extremely well for someone with no formal training, so you don't need too much help on that except for when you want to branch outside of the style of dance that you want to perform."

Jeff let Mitchell digest that before continuing. "Me for example? I absolutely despise folk-dancing, I think of it as a complete lack of effort on the part of the dancers. But I needed to learn how to dance all sorts of styles, including fold-dancing, because every type of dance requires a different type of balance, focus, and drive to perform it. My mentor drilled into me all the different types of dances he knew, even Folk-dancing, and while I hated that part, I benefited from Folk-dancing as well. You did a more freestyle type of dance in class for example, but to really understand what it means to let the music flow through you, need need to learn different dance forms as well. I brought a few tapes over if you'd like to try."

Jeff nodded, "They're classical pieces, nothing like Mozart, just some quiet piano pieces. Care to try them? It's meant for a duet style of dancing, so if you don't want to start with a duet right away, that's fine. I've got some other tapes and CD's that'll work for a solo dance too. Classical music though really pulls at the heart-strings, which I found helped to bring out my own latent talent. My mentor would always perform duets with me to bring on my talent through classical music. He said that sometimes, the only way to bring out someone's hidden talent is to take a direct hand with their work, and dance right alongside them. The body reacts more to physical contact, and when the body senses another with a similar rhythm to it, the body naturally moves towards that state of harmony, creating an almost symbiotic dance."

"You must have seen a few clips from my 'Stalingrad' piece right? They played clips of it all over the news prior to my interview with CBS a couple weeks ago. The dance was a very strange one to me, because every time I started to dance to the Russian Classics, one of my students also danced with me, and we suddenly found ourselves dancing together. We were each supposed to have our own space onstage, but the music kept us moving back to each other, touching only an instant then parting, then coming back for another few seconds of contact before moving away again."

Those words sent him into a moment of dream-like state. He'd always wondered what it felt like, to be one of the dancers who got to twirl about beside Jeff. It must have been such a rush. Not only the idea of being on the same stage as him but to actually be able to dance with him ...

He zoned back into the room before looking over at Jeff. He felt the tips of his ears start to burn slightly in the embarrassment of having stopped listening. "Sorry, I was just trying to recall the clips." He did say Stalingrad, right? "I guess that's what they mean by letting the music guide you." He replied. He'd heard that so many times from videos on the internet or over dramatic teachers. They were kind of annoying to listen to but their technique and advice was always pretty good so Mitchell had always pushed through it.

"I don't mind if we try something out; that was ... kinda what I was hoping for." He laughed nervously. "But, as you can probably guess, I've never danced with anyone before so ... sorry ahead of time." Hesitant at first, Mitchell finally rocked himself off the couch and turned to the other. "Did you want me to put the tape in my stereo? It's still got a tape player in it. One of my many, old hand-me-downs."

He paused a moment before questioning, "Umm ... can you get up on your own? I-I don't mean to think that you can't or anything; just curious."

Jeff stopped talking as he noticed that Mitchell's eyes were no longer focusing on him, so he waved a hand in front of Mitchell's face to get his attention back. "Hey, your eyes started going wayward there, thought they might end up in Kansas or something. You okay there?" Seeing that embarrassed expression along with the equally embarrassed response, Jeff chuckled. Nah, don't worry about it, I just worried that you might have forgotten something very important, and had to leave for somewhere suddenly."

The thought of dancing with someone always was an interesting idea to Jeff, though he seldom danced with anyone outside of tour practice. Most of the time, people either wanted to dance with him either to work out the kinks in their performance, or said person wanted to have some way of claiming Jeff for themselves. Mostly women on the latter issue, though Jeff never once did so, nor did he give the reason for such lack of interest. He always said that as a performer, his performance took center stage over a relationship until the tour was over, and in large part that was true. The only other reason was one that was private, though by no means scandalous in this business. Hell, most dancers that toured the world like Jeff did were either gay, straight, bisexual, lesbian, or willing to try anything at least once. So for Jeff to be gay wasn't an issue by any means, it was just something that Jeff didn't answer to anyone that he wasn't friends with.

He'd simply tell a fan that he danced with that he was just too busy, rather than see their face scrunch up if they realized that he just wasn't interested in women. If the men knew he was interested in other men, then the similarly minded men would start showing up asking for a date or more, and that was about as bad as the women. Actually, Jeff was more bisexual than simply being gay, he just had more of a tendency to be interested in men, so it was easier to simply say that he was gay, rather than saying that he was bi who happened to like guys more than girls. That just sounded awful.

All while he thought of this, he paid attention to Mitchell, and nodded at the apology beforehand. "Hahah, don't worry about it Mitchell, people have stepped on my toes about as much as I've stepped on their toes when trying to dance, so don't worry if you step on my toes."

For a moment Jeff toyed with the idea of making a joke about killing if he was wearing cleats, but decided against it, since the joke wouldn't be that funny anyway. "Mm? Oh, no I can get up just fine, but if there's anything in the room for me to trip on, maybe you should clear it away before we start. I won't have you dancing to classical music through the vibes of the songs just yet, I need to see how your body reacts to classical music first, and whether or not you have a sure enough awareness of your eye-hand coordination. Sometimes people who are awesome at break-dancing can't even do the two-step without tripping at each step. I'm not saying that your footing is that bad, but it'll be good for you as well to try just dancing without music, so you know how to move when dancing with a partner."

Dance ... without music? He'd never really done that before. In fact, he couldn't think of a single time where he hadn't practiced with some sort of beat in the background.

Suddenly he was flooded with the memory of those dancers in the back alley and how the music played to them. That'd be sort of a similar thing, right? Except this time, the music would come after a trial run. Think of it like a rehearsal. Ahh but those dancers had free styled their way through the performance.

Mitchell would have to do the same.

"I don't know how well that's going to go but alright!" He replied, trying his best to sound enthusiastic. And he was. This was going to be what he had envisioned when he thought of Jeff coming over to help him practice. Well ... more like doing something and having Mitchell try and follow suit. Never would he have guessed he'd be dancing to classical music, let alone with Jeff.

If he hadn't been trying so hard to keep his first impression good, Mitchell may have sighed happily and would that have been embarrassing. He could spend all night sighing in content over this event. Right now was time to put his inner fanboy to bed so he could get some work done.

Ahh but it was just so hard. All the clips he'd ever seen of Jeff dancing with a partner always looked so ... emotional; so strong. There was just a certain form to it that everything always fell into: from the positioning of hands to the looks upon their faces. The lighting, the mood, the music ... ahh, how Mitchell had always longed to be able to see the man perform live. He had no doubt that he'd likely melt into his chair and his family would have to bring him home in a bucket.

.... was that a bit weird? Maybe a little but, well, what could he really say to excuse such dream-like admiration?

Closing his eyes a moment, he took a deep breath, let it out slowly and opened them to look at Jeff once more. "Okay. I'm ready. What ... should I do; exactly?"

Jeff pushed himself off the couch, smiling proudly. "That's it, keep up that kind of confidence! Just saying that you'll do your best is enough for the most part anyway, even if you don't have confidence in your ability to perform perfectly. Just saying that you'll do your best is enough in itself. Now, here's the tape, so go ahead and put it in the tape recorder. I got my tape recorder when I was three years old, so it's older than me, maybe by five years. God, now I almost feel old.." Jeff chuckled at himself, then shook himself out a bit, doing some light stretches of his arms and legs.

"Now, the first thing you'll want to do is to stand straight, as if you're standing in line for food at a subway restaurant or other place like that. Yes, just relax though, you're a little too tense, which is the main cause of accidents when trying to dance with a partner. Being too stiff leads to missteps, so try to relax a bit more, and let your muscles relax as well. Deep, slow breaths, and make sure your heartrate is fairly constant, but not in overdrive. I know a woman who once fainted right before we started dancing because she only then realized, I mean really realized, not just saying that she knew, but that she truly realized that she was going to dance with me. Wouldn't want you to collapse on the floor due to that, now would we?"

Jeff stepped forward, carefully, and extended one hand to Mitchell to take, and then stepped in close to Mitchell. Now, as you've probably seen in classical dancing, the people dancing tend to remain close to the other, so I'll try to do so without being too close for either of our own comforts. Let me see your left hand for a second, no your other left hand. Yes, now just let your hand rest riiiight, there." Placing Mitchell's hand right above the small curve of his back, Mitchell then placed his hand similarly on Mitchell's back. "If any of this weirds you out just let me know and I'll stop."

Mitchell smoothly took the others hand, a little bit like he earlier had. There was just something ... quiet about the touch, Mitchell couldn't explain it. When the other stepped in, his heart did exactly what Jeff advised him against. He swallowed and took a deep breath again to calm his nerves. Fanboy to bed, fanboy to bed.

If he died in his sleep tomorrow, he would die a very happy young man.

He did as he was told and motioned to do with a couple screw up but he tried his best to let them roll down his back. His back .. ahh he felt tiny little prickles where Jeff's hand rested. Admittingly, Mitchell felt a bit silly in this form and it was rather embarrassing to be so close to someone. Even if it hadn't been Jeff, Mitchell was certain his nerves would still be buzzing with uncertainty. It was just ... a whole new perspective to take a step into someone's personal space and rest there as if you weren't a few inches from the others body.

Deep breath.

"No, no, it's fine. Really, just ... takes a minute to get used to." He chuckled nervously but then glanced down at his feet. He couldn't stomach looking up at the other for a moment. Plus, he was rather terrified of stepping on the others feet. He knew he'd apologized and Jeff had played the joke back but he still didn't want to test the water of that situation. Plus, if he looked up, he'd be way too close to Jeff's face and he wasn't so sure if he'd be able to dance at all. His knees may just give way right there.

Deep breath. He pressed his hand a bit more against his back (ignoring the feeling of perfectly formed dance muscles) and stood up a bit more straight. Once he figured he had his posture tall and strong but not tense or too stiff, he gave a nod. If he acted confident, maybe he'd grow to feel it too.

"I sure hope you're planning on leading." Mitchell joked, a small smile forming to his lips. Alright so now he just had to imagine the ... flow of the dance. Worry less about where his feet were and more about how the dance felt. Okay, he could do this. Confidence!

Jeff chuckled, waiting as Mitchell started to relax a bit, noting how the mans hand hadn't moved a millimeter from where he'd placed it, letting him know just how nervous Mitchell was. Most people would love to let their hands wander along Jeff's body if given the chance to do so, but Mitchell didn't. Honest kid. "Now, we'll start just by moving our feet a few inches at a time, so you can get used to dancing in close proximity to me. Wouldn't want to take too big of a step right away, one of us might topple trying for that,so let's just start small. Follow my step a second or two after me, so you can see where my foot lands before moving with me."

Moving his right foot just 5 inches to his right, Jeff watches as Mitchell moves his foot to be next to Jeff's, knowing that Mitchell was probably looking as much at where his feet were going as at his teacher for guidance. Jeff, however, just watched Mitchell's feet, not looking the student in the eye yet. "Don't watch me, that's how mishaps happen when starting a duet like this. Start by watching your feet, then look up when you start to feel more comfortable. Some teachers say that you should never look down when dancing, but I say that you should always keep an eye on where your feet are until you get used to dancing so close to someone else."

As they continued with just a few inches in one direction or the other, Jeff finally looked up at Mitchell. "You think you're getting the hang of this, or would you like to keep dancing little baby steps like this for a while? I don't have anywhere I need to be until two days from now, so I ca be here as long as you need me to be until then. Are you ready to try dancing to the music now? We've been practicing mostly the dance steps themselves without paying attention to timing so far, and you seem to be doing well. Care to try dancing in time to the music now, or would you rather continue without the music for a bit longer?"

He wouldn't lie, it had been a bit hard to concentrate on breathing normally and moving his feet at the same time. All those years of watching clips where ever he could find them and reading up on the man, he never would have imagined he'd get a chance to match steps with him. His mind filled with the idea that this must have been how his partners felt while dancing with him. They were just running drills basically but still.

What an honor.

Alright so he'd been watching his feet a bit more then he'd originally intended to but he couldn't help it. Confidence didn't squash nervousness.

He took every word in stride, almost instantly committing it to memory for future practice.

He laughed. "Ahh, don't tell me that or I'll be inviting you over all the time." When he looked up, he quietly found himself kind of liking the color of Jeff's eyes. They filled him with inspiration. "I-I'm kidding. That was a joke." He rambled, not wanting Jeff to get any weird ideas that would, in truth, be totally accurate. He was such a freak. "Umm but yeah, I think I've got the hang of this. It's easier to sort of .. feel the steps rather then look at them." He made a step to each side as if to prove so. "There is a sort of ... pattern when you do it, even without music."

"I think I could try with the music though. I can't guarantee getting it right away but, hey, that's what this practice is for." He smiled, trying to absorb back that fleeting confidence. It was a rather reluctant move but Mitchell pulled away from him and asked, "Did you have a certain tape .. or something for me to put in?"
