Bryce Walsh The summer sun beat down on Bryce's head as he lugged pails of water and feed to the elephants, horses, cows, sheep, dogs, and all other sorts of animals that comprised their circus' main act. He'd long since shed his shirt and had doused himself with water from the hose, but the shocking coolness of the wet was beginning to turn stifling beneath the baking heat of the sun. "I wish I'd thought to remember my hat," he thought grumpily to himself, setting one of the heavy buckets down and wiping a strand of hair from his eyes with his forearm. Already, despite the tender age of 12, his young arms were already showing the hint and promise of muscle, built up from carrying the tack for the animals, grooming the creatures, and lugging their feed and water to them twice a day. It was a tough job, but for being a kid, it paid fairly well. He had his own trailer to escape to, filled with comic books, video games, his stash of money, and hordes of snacks that he'd pilfered away to much on in secret, away from the all-seeing gaze of Mama Pertolini, the Italian lady who had taken it upon herself to 'mother' Bryce when his parents had died. Upon reaching the elephant pen, he dumped the first of many buckets of water into the their large water trough, then propped his arms on the metal rungs of their makeshift pen and looked around him. It was their first day in this city, though they would upon up the show until the following day. Normally, there would be townies - townsfolk - helping them raise the great big red-and-white striped tent and earning themselves free tickets in the process, but it was just too hot out for someone who didn't have to be out in the heat to even think about venturing outside. Looking back at his empty pail and the 5 gallon tank he still had to fill, Bryce sighed, then picked up both of his buckets and trudged back to the water hose to fill them up. Again. |

Conrad Hampton Family outings for the Hamptons were typically disasters. He wasn’t even sure that he could call most of them ‘outings’ in good conscious, only 1 out of every 12 times did they actually make it out of the house. Out of the times that they did manage to get out of the door and get the van packed, only 1 out of 20 times was there actually a family. By the time they got to wherever they were going the parental Hamptons found out that a girl was at home or made a break for it at a stop sign and Megan spent the rest of the trip in rage and tears harping on the fact that she couldn’t get the family together. That summer afternoon could be filed under the ‘not making it out of the house’ category. Conrad was stirred awake that morning at 8 so they could go to the beach, but it was nearing 1 in the afternoon and the house was still as chaotic as it got when everyone was there. To keep himself from the whirlwind of irritated estrogen that was downstairs the tween stayed locked up in his room with his baby brother Matthew, watching TV and throwing a tennis ball against the roof. “Stop it, that’s annoying.” Said younger sibling spoke up from his side of the room, looking up from his handheld video game and glaring at his brother. Conrad did as he was ordered, catching the ball as it fell and instead tossed it at the other guy in the room. “Hey!” The dirty blonde chuckled brightly as his brother took a hit to the forehead. That laughter was brought to an end when the kid started crying. Wonderful. “Man, I can’t wait for you to grow up and stop crying about everything.” Conrad pushed off of his bed and made the short cross from his bed to the desk Matthew sat at, grabbing and pulling the other’s hair and looking at the spot that was hit while the younger sobbed harder. “Shut up! You’re okay! I’m going to pull harder if you don’t stop--” A knock at the door interrupted tears and words, both pairs of eyes turning to the barrier that kept the girls in the family out. “Oh Conrad~ Are you there baby brother? Your favorite big sister has a cosmetology test next Monday and she needs a test dummy.” Conrad’s eyes went wide as giggles slid into the room. No no no. He had so many sisters, why did Addaline always harass him to practice on? With reflexes like a cheetah Conrad grabbed the bag that he was supposed to be taking with him to the beach and shoved on a pair of sandals before making a break for the window. “Where are you going?” Matthew called out in a whisper, abandoning the desk and crawling onto his bed, curling up in the corner. Conrad pulled up the window and stuck a leg out, sitting on the sill for a moment as he fixed his duffle bag on his shoulder. “If they don’t find you they’ll get me.” “Out. And don’t unlock that door. Even if she says she has cookies. She doesn’t.” After delivering his words of wisdom and really stressing to his twit of a sibling that his sister didn’t have any sweets for him Conrad swung down to the roof of the garage and then scaled down to the driveway, running out across the street and to freedom one block over. Since the family was never going to leave home Conrad decided to go to his friend Jacob’s house to waste away the blistering hot day, because Jacob had a pool. Messing with shaggy hair that fell just past his nose Conrad started to whistle a song. The trip to Jacob’s dad’s house was a long one. He had to make his way through 2 neighborhoods and a few blocks through town. Walking out in the unforgiving sun would be worth it though, when he could get in that cool chlorine laced water. Hopefully his dad’s girlfriend wouldn’t be around to ruin things. Call him first. Conrad decided to make a slight detour to a payphone to make sure the wicked witch wouldn’t keep them out of the pool. In a few short minutes he found one and started digging in his white trunk pockets for change, but something else caught his attention and distracted him. Off in the distance he heard what he thought to be a roar. I’m not near the zoo… As he took a look around to double check he heard the noise again. The tween quickly forgot about calling his friend and made his way towards the noise. After maneuvering a few blocks he saw where the noise came from. It seemed that there was some event in town that was being set up. It took a minute of standing and staring for Conrad to figure out that it was the circus. “Oh, cool.” Instinctively he checked to see if he had more money but he realized the place didn’t look set up. Even better, it meant he could see all the stuff that was out for free. Thrifty indeed. Conrad made it towards the area with a couple of people talking about tent pitching before veering off to look around, heading towards some animal cages. When he got an eyeful of the lion that he thought did the roaring earlier he stopped and look, muttering an awesome under his breath before unzipping his bag and digging for his disposable camera. I wonder if I can do that head in mouth trick… Conrad muttered as he snapped a picture and inched closer to the cage. |

Bryce was just finishing up his chores and taking the last buckets of water to the tigers when he heard what he thought was footsteps. Confusion kept him rooted to the spot for a moment, as everyone who was involved with the circus and acts was already inside the big tent practicing their various routines. He was the only one who was actually outside in the blistering heat, or at least, he had thought so. Wondering who had abandoned the opportunity to practice, he quickly headed in the direction that the sound had come from, realizing with delight that he was headed for the tiger pen. "Perfect," he thought as he moved. "Someone to talk to while I finish my chores. I wonder when we'll open for the public, and if they'll give me a day off to visit the beach..." Bryce's internal musings were brought to a halt, however, as he rounded a corner and caught sight of the person he'd heard. Not a circus performer, after all, but a townie, come to see what all the fuss was about. As his steps brought him nearer, he heard the boy mutter something, and his eyebrows shot up nearly to his hairline. Feigning disinterest, Bryce approached with his buckets of water and feed, his young muscles trembling with the effort he exerted to cart them to the pen, then lift them to pour their contents into the proper bin. Once his buckets were empty, he turned toward the stranger, dark brown eyes friendly and intelligent. Finally, raising an arm to wipe away the sweat that was running down his forehead, he spoke. "I wouldn't suggest trying it. Beelzebub here has been pretty shifty lately. Wouldn't want the town to kick us out because Beezle decided to make a snack out of you." Then, offering his hand, he said, "Name's Bryce. Who are you and... what are you doing here? We're not open to the public yet." |
