Gabriel Shaw MacMillan O'Roarke

Linwood Owen (without the elf ears)

Gray:

Propping his head in his hand, Gabe stared out the window with vaguely bored green eyes, smothering a yawn behind a large hand that held the promise of greater height and breadth of shoulder. He listened to the tutor droning on and thought the man's voice scratchy and unpleasant; not at all conducive to making two teenaged boys pay attention to the day's lesson. With a wistful smile, his eyes drifted back outdoors, and he thought that he'd much rather be out there, running through the fields with Lin or perhaps racing through the countryside at breakneck speeds on horseback, than stuck in the stuffy third floor classroom.

A sudden smack to the top of his head had the young nobleman wincing in pain, then glaring balefully up at the balding man who was their tutor.

"My Lord," the man began, a note of chastisement already clear in his nasally voice, "I can not report to your father that your studies are progressing well if you do not pay attention to the lesson. What was I just saying?"

Dutifully, the dark-haired teen repeated everything he'd heard, then added, "It isn't that I don't pay attention, sir. Tis only that I would rather be out there than in here." He gave the admission added bulk by jerking his head toward the window, where a bright ray of warm afternoon sunlight streamed through and illuminated the tiny room.

The tutor looked hesitant for a moment, then finally relented. "Oh, all right. I suppose I've kept you both cooped up long enough. Run off with you, now, and make certain to be back in this room at one o'clock sharp tomorrow afternoon to continue the lesson. Agreed?"

A happy grin stretched the corners of Gabe's mouth, and he eagerly nodded. "Agreed!" Without pausing to think about anything, he grabbed Lin's hand and tugged until the other boy was out of his chair, as well. "Come on!" came the glad cry, and then the redhead would find himself being led down two flights of stairs at a reckless pace before being flung through the large double doors of the Macmillan estate to stand outside in the full glory of the sunshine.

Breathing deeply and throwing his arms wide, the future Duke tipped his face up to the sky and asked, "What shall we do with the rest of our day, Lin? Persuade cook to make us a picnic basket and lounge about in the shade down by the river? Or ride horses through the fields?"

YinYin:

Lin, on the other hand, was too far off in a little world of his own creation to really take note of his tutor’s grating voice or the boredom it bestowed upon its listeners with startling ease. Instead his mind traveled across whimsical paths, through faerie tale and make believe. But to spare himself a reprimanding rap on the head, quite similar to the one the young Lord had just received, pale green eyes were fixed on a point at the front of the classroom – one that tended to include the teacher’s head - his hand idly taking notes on… whatever it was they were learning – honestly, he was too preoccupied to really pay more than marginal attention to the lecture. There were so many other things, interesting things, which merited a slot in his mental time schedule.

The sharp ‘thwap’ on Gabe’s head, a blow that would have been more deserved by him, had Lin snapping back to the now and flushing; words could not describe how thankful he was that his classmate, rather than himself, had been called out. He couldn’t have recited what the professor had said if his life had depended on it. Before the redhead had time to do more than quietly laud the young Lord for managing to cajole their way into early dismissal, his hand was grabbed and he was plucked out of his seat with a negligent tug; Gabe was quick to forget just show strong he was. With a flailing arm and precarious foot work, Lin managed to keep his balance and himself in one piece until they came to a sharp stop right outside the doors of the manor.

“Jesus, Gabe, I’m not a bloody ragdoll.” The slighter male huffed, furrowed brows, pout, and messy curls giving him the appearance of an indignant bird whose feathers had been ruffled. But it only took a moment of basking in the sunlight and inhaling the sweet air of freedom for the redhead's humor and characteristically bright grin to return and dimple his cheeks. “Well… I don’t see why we couldn't do both if we really were looking to. You’ve a silver tongue in that mouth and I doubt Martha would say no if we ganged up on her and pleaded." Their success rate in the past had been quite admirable to be sure. Besides, a romp through the woods followed by the delicious treats that would no doubt be hidden amongst their meal sounded like a slice of heaven.

Gray:

Gabe grinned at Lin and stuck his tongue out teasingly before retorting, "If you weren't so bloody tiny, Lin, I wouldn't be able to pull you around like that." Gently, he dug an elbow into his friend's ribs to show that he was kidding, then he reached back and took hold of the redhead's arm once again, fully prepared to take off at a run for the kitchens. However, one glace back at the stables showed the door open and four riders taking off down the lane. Pointing, he said, "Look. There goes my father and uncles. The only horses left will be mother's and mine." He glanced back at Lin for a moment, bit his lip, then suggested carefully, "I suppose we could try riding double on Brute, though we haven't done that in years."

With a shrug, he led the way around the manor house toward the back and stepped up to the kitchen door just as someone was trying to come through it. Reaching up and opening the door, Gabe stepped back to allow Jem - one of the helpers in the kitchen - to go through the door with his heavy load of ice for the ice house. "Best not be going in there just yet, Master Gabriel," the older man said with a crooked grin. "One o' the new maids left this shipment o' ice in the storeroom, and it done melted all over the floors. They're a-tryin' to clean it up before Missus Porter sees it."

Mrs. Porter was their housekeeper, and she presented a formidable appearance. With her long, thin body, hands like claws, propensity to dress all in black, and the large ring of keys that hung perpetually from her belt, she looked more like a jailer than a housekeeper. Gabe usually did his level best to stay away from her and keep out of her notice.

Despite the warning, the young Lord slipped through the door, still tugging Lin along behind him, and searched the room for Cook. He found her almost at once, untouched and untroubled by the squawking maids who were scrambling about with mops and buckets and trying to mop up the sodden floor where the ice had melted. One poor girl was seated in the corner, her feet drawn up onto the stool she sat on, her head on her knees, and her thin shoulders were shaking with her sobs. As he watched, another of the kitchen workers brought over a hot plate of Cook's roast beef and potatoes, and the girl dropped her feet and sat up straighter. Though she sniffled several times and her nose and eyes were red from crying, she ate what was on the plate until it was gone, then she stood and marched over to help clean up the mess she'd inadvertently made.

Shaking his head and steering clear of kitchen politics, Gabe made his unerring way to Martha's side and was halted prematurely when she turned from her task and pinned him with a level gaze.

"That tutor of yours was down here not two minutes ago, and he told me he'd let you young rascals loose early. I had a thought you might be by for a basket, so I've already had the girls make one up for you. Take it and go, you great beasts." Despite the harsh words, there was a fondness in her tone and a smile on her lips when she spoke to the young Lord and his friend. Gabe only grinned at her, threw his arms around her ample waist in thanks, then darted off to pick up the basket before hurrying out the door to head down to the stables. Turning to Lin, Cook murmured, "That boy has more energy than anyone I've ever seen. You'd best hurry up and catch him, or he's like to disappear with the wind."

YinYin:

Even with the teasing reassurances and friendly nudge to the redhead’s lanky body, Lin still managed to produce a half hearted pout and a sassy roll of his eyes, said gesture accompanied by a drawled, “Honestly.” As his arm was grabbed, the younger of the two squeezed his eyes closed and braced himself in preparation for the Lordling’s reckless speed and the stomach turning sensation of constantly being on the verge of cordially introducing his face to the ground. Thankfully he was spared from this fate a moment longer as Gabe’s attention was temporarily diverted towards the stables. Pale green orbs followed the path of more vibrant ones, curiosity immediately piqued. “I wonder where they’re off too…” The freckled teen mused aloud, the busybody within him emerging. If the brunette didn’t provide the answer, Fredrick would be the one to get an earful. Distractedly, he glanced back at the other before grinning.

“Well, seein’ as I’m a bloody tiny ragdoll, I doubt Brute will notice a thing. Dear horse is built just like his master.” The words were emphasized by a playful punch to Gabe’s arm, a blow Lin was sure had the potency of a pebble thrown at a giant. With a final look over his shoulder, the redhead followed after his future Lord, needing to maintain a brisk pace as each of the brunette’s steps required two from him no matter how far he stretched his legs. As they reached the kitchen and Jem imparted the tragic news – for the new maid, at least – Lin couldn’t help but peer around Gabe’s towering form to get a glimpse of the chaos within the kitchen. The mention of Mrs. Porter, however, sent a sobering shiver down his spine; he couldn’t count the times that women had hauled him by the ear to his father where the brutal tongue lashing that followed often included complaints about his “dilly dallying” and having his “head in the clouds.” All true, of course, but the ear pulling was hardly warranted.

With a tug to his arm, Lin trailed after the older boy, having to stifle his initial response to help the clean up as he was still firmly in the other’s grasp; though they were close friends, some boundaries were never crossed. But the prospect of so readily receiving a basket brought a jubilant smile to the redhead's face and once Gabe had flitted away in what seemed a heartbeat, he took the opportunity to more sedately give the matronly cook a peck on the cheek. "I wouldn't doubt it in the least, Ma'm. I'll try to make sure he stays grounded." With another flashed smile, Lin went tearing after the other with a recklessness that aptly mirrored his friend's. Through the halls his shoes screeched and over the front steps he flew before he came to a skidding halt in the shade of the stables, a touch out of breath. "One day I just won't follow." The slimmer of the two warned, the light flush of his cheeks making the numerous freckles dusted across them all the more apparent.

Gray:

Gabe didn't even bother to look back over his shoulder at Lin when the warning was given; he only grinned and nodded, knowing full well that his smaller friend would follow just about wherever he led. It was a curious habit they'd each developed as young children - Gabriel led, and Linwood followed. The young nobleman didn't why it had worked out that way, but it had, and he had been content to allow things to run their course without interfering. Every once in a great while, he would try to get Lin to take the lead; to make a decision about their activities; but the redhead always seemed so uncomfortable about it that eventually, the future Duke gave up trying.

Holding the basket easily in one hand, he reached back with the other and threaded his fingers through his friends', grasping the smaller hand and tugging the other boy forward and into the shaded coolness of the stables. It was a gesture that was familiar to both of them, having been initiated time after time as they ran through fields of knee high wheat and grass, or walked along the precarious banks of the swiftly flowing river.

Once inside the building, Gabe gently pushed Lin down onto a hay bale so that the smaller teen was sitting comfortably, then he set the full basket down on the ground beside the hay. Too impatient to wait for a stableman to come and saddle Brute, he let out a piercing whistle that had the great black stallion trotting in from the fields to stand before Gabe like a well-loved pet - which he basically was. The teen spent a few minutes scratching the horses ears and fetlock, pushing the stubborn hank of mane out of Brute's intelligent brown gaze and smiling up into the bemused eyes. It always astounded him how human-like Brute seemed sometimes, as though he was more perceptive or knew more than most other humans did.

Going easily through the routine of brushing out the beast's glossy coat to make sure there was no mud or burrs that would itch or poke uncomfortably beneath the saddle, Gabe quickly finished the grooming and began the process of saddling and bridling Brute, laughing quietly when the horse began to lip at his hair, impatient already to be out of the stable and off racing down the lane.

In what seemed no time, they were ready to go, and the titled teen swung himself easily up into the saddle, then held his arms out for Lin to pass him their picnic basket. He set it on the saddle in front of him and lashed it in place so it wouldn't fall off, then held out his hand so that his friend could use the boost of Gabe's strength to place his foot in the stirrup and vault up behind the bigger boy.

YinYin:

Gabe's hand was a familiar and comforting warmth against his own, effectively staving any further protest or huffing remark as the boy allowed himself to be lead onward and into the stables. Celadon toned orbs were closed a moment as his senses were steeped in the sweet smell of hay and the whuffing of inhabiting horses; things he'd come to enjoy through his frequent visits here to pester his older brother. From his perch on the hay bale, the redhead watched as Brute was readied for their ride by the expert hands of his master, more than happy to simply be a spectator as the imposing horse made him more than a little uneasy. Not that he would ever admit this to his noble friend.

A ghost of a smile crossed Linwood's lips; how different they were in every aspect ( physical differences aside) yet the best of friends. Any further observations were cut short as he was called on to pass their picnic basket and then hoist himself onto the back of the beast. With Gabe's strength to back his jump, the redhead was able to spring into the air, light as feather or so it felt. Slender arms were then wrapped around the older boy’s waist, one hand grabbing the wrist of the other to offer a firm anchor. A cheek was pressed against the brunette’s back, a nook that allowed him to close his eyes against the sickening lurch of ground as they rode.

"Will we be going to our spot?" Linwood questioned, his words half muffled against the expanse of the brunette's back. The referenced location was a spot beside the river, beneath an old, gnarled oak whose branches extended over the flowing water. From one of these limbs they had tied a thick rope, a makeshift swing to hurl themselves into the cool stream on hot days.

Here's the basis of what we RP'ed out over MSN Messenger.

Gabe has come home to find the person responsible for the deaths of his parents, and in the process has been reunited with Lin. He reveals what he's come back to do; Lin offers to help in any way he can; and in a moment of angsty drama, Gabe - who is now known as Shaw - breaks a cut crystal glass full of brandy and, fortunately, has Lin there to tend to his life-threatening scrapes.

To make the new Duke feel better, Lin suggests that they go for a ride to their old 'hangout;' Shaw agrees, and, after saddling his horse, takes off at a dead run; and this is where we enter with some IM posts.

Yin:
"Hey!" Liam cried out indignantly after the quickly disappearing form of his best friend, feeling a thrill of exhilaration himself. Now THIS was more like the old times; Gabe always the impulsive and impetuous one, he always scurrying to catch up. He sent Apple off at gallop but knew he'd only be able to the keep the Lord in sight, at best. Like Brute, Beast was an animal of surpassing excellency, Wind whipped through his short locks, chilling his face and coloring his cheeks. Hopefully the water wouldn't be too cool. Not that he minded; heat had always been more unbearable than cold. As they neared the stream of their olden days, Lin brought his horse down to a more manageable speed. "I suppose that makes whatever atrocious thing you dubbed the loser.

Gray:
Shaw laughed loudly and deeply, the ride having done much to restore his previous good humor, and swung long legs down over Beast's back to land, feet spread easily, on the ground. "It was a rotten goose's egg, and yes, that would make you one," he teased gently, coming up to Apple's bridle and, after a quick pat on the horse's noses, put his arms up to help Lin down as he'd always done when they were younger. It didn't occur to him that they were adults now, and grown men didn't comport themselves in such a way; even when those grown men had grown up doing those exact things and had been best friends. So he waited, arms outstretched, to lift the petite redhead from the saddle.

Yin:
The nostalgia of that gesture was warm and sweet in Lin's chest; some things didn't change, thank God. "I'm not a child anymore." The redhead mock-huffed, yet went to accept the offered help nonetheless. But as he went to swing a leg over his dear horse, his foot instead decided to get tangled in stirrup and rather than alight gracefully as he ought to have, he went tumbling face-first into Gabe's chest. Oh how his cheeks burned in embarrassment as he stuttered a muffled apology.

Gray:
Half expecting something to happen, Shaw was prepared for the extra weight that launched at him with unintentional force, and he braced them both and somehow managed to miraculously keep them both upright on and their feet. But now he held Lin's slender body close to his own, his arms locked around the thin waist, and he could feel the pounding of the redhead's heart that so matched his own. Taking a deep breath to still the instant and gut-deep reaction his body had had to Lin's nearness, Shaw gently but firmly set his friend away from him with a small smile and a murmured, "It's quite all right."

Thinking that a good dunking would help him retain his sanity, and hoping that the water was cool enough to settle his imagination, Shaw began to undress quickly, leaving his clothes in a pile on the bank before diving sleekly into the water.

Yin:
If Lin hadn't had a reason to blush before, he most certainly did now. Gabe, quite simply, embodied everything that was masculine beauty; from the perfect arch of his brows to the wonderfully shaped behind that made a shameless appearance before flitting out of sight. If the Duke hadn't been his childhood companion, he was quite certain he'd be smitten. The thought sobered him somewhat, got him into motion as one article of clothing than the next was discarded. There was simply no way the brunette was like HIM and it would be much too awkward wouldn't it? Rather than torture himself with a slow immersion, Lin followed Gabe's lead and deed over with, breaking the suffer to shiver. "It's cold!" He whined, goosebumps covering him head to toe.

Shaw pulled himself through the water with sure, firm strokes, enjoying the feeling of the water sliding against his body. He surfaced at the far end of the natural pool and pulled himself up slightly to rest his elbows on the grassy bank and allow his body to float easily in the water. Warm gray-green eyes watched Lin carefully, wondering what the redhead was thinking.

When his childhood friend broke over the surface of the water and came up shivering and complaining that it was cold, Shaw laughed quietly and teased, "It's the middle of spring. What did you expect, a hot spring?"

Eying the old swing they'd used as boys, he contemplated climbing out of the water just to back in again, but decided that the chill he'd likely get wasn't worth it. Instead, he lifted one sun-bronzed hand and pointed to the old rope., asking, "Think it would still hold our weight?"

Linwood brushed soaking strands of sunset from his eyes, glaring at the Duke and retorting with a stuck out tongue even as he shivered. “No, but you’ll have to forgive me if the chill came as a bit of a surprise.” However, with a bit of movement, the cold seeped away and before long the water was refreshing, invigorating as the redhead swam about. It also lent to idle contemplation. He hadn’t come to swim here since, well, the last time he and Gabe had gone together, to tell the truth; it just wasn’t the same without him and it seemed WRONG to come with someone else.

Gabe’s deep, rumbling voice brought the slender waif from the past to the present, directing his eyes to the rope that placidly swung in the breeze. Would it hold their weight? Lin rather doubted it. During the ten years of the Duke’s absence, the swing had been replaced twice by the redhead for nostalgia’s sake. He had used the sturdy knotting technique Gabe had shown him but that could hardly combat the elements. It seemed more likely than not it would break.

“Perhaps it would support me,” Linwood concluded with a dubious shake of his head; he was, after all, much slimmer than his best friend. “But I’m quite sure My Lord would take a rather inglorious tumble if he tried.” Full lips curved into a teasing smile as he sent a splash in Gabe’s direction. “Do you dare give it a try?”

Shaw's eyes lit up at the proposal of a dare, and he swung his contemplative gaze from Lin to the rope swing and back again, wondering if it would indeed hold his weight, or send him tumbling for an icy bath in the pond. Then he decided that he couldn't be any worse off than he was right now, and with a chuckle, he slipped beneath the surface once again and pulled himself through the water to the opposite bank. After one laughing, mischievous glance back at Lin, the Duke hoisted his nude body from the water and strode confidently over the grass, unconcerned about his nakedness in front of his best friend.

What were the odds that Lin had the same compulsions and desires that Shaw had, anyway?

Grasping the fraying rope in one massive hand, he pulled it back, and, taking a running start, lifted himself onto the rope as it swung wildly out over the water. He heard an ominous crack, then a sudden feeling of weightlessness, before he found himself plummeting downward and into the pool of cold water, still grasping the rope.

He surfaced laughing, still grasping the rope in one hand, and slicked back his hair with the other. Grinning, he said, "Well, I guess that answers that question, doesn't it?"

With a dubious smile gracing his lips, Linwood’s pale orbs followed his friend and Lord as the other swam to the bank and strode unabashedly to the taunting piece of cord. Arms encircled still trembling shoulders in vain hope of warmth as he called out to the brunette in teasing scorn, “You’ll only make a fool of yourself, Gabe!” The former nickname had slid so easily off the tongue it was a few moments before the waif even realized his slip. The twinge of guilt that followed was quickly snuffed with a flare of stubbornness; if his transgression couldn’t be forgiven, they were poor friends indeed. ‘How things have changed.’ Linwood nearly grimaced; his thoughts had certainly become quite whiny and nostalgic now that Gabe had returned. But could he really help himself?

Gabe had always had a presence about him but now that the years had matured him, there was true power in his form; from the ripple of muscle beneath sun-kissed skin to the confidence he carried like a mantle. A pity time and circumstance had scared him as well. Still, it was good to see him overflowing with youthful energy rather than the brooding darkness of before. Besides, it was hard to slip into melancholy musings when someone who was meant to be oh so dignified was currently swinging from a rope, as nude as a babe. The redhead braced himself as the older male took a running start, almost reluctant to watch as he swung forward. Just as Gabe reached the tip of his arc, a horrified gasp leapt from Lin’s throat as the cord snapped beneath the Lord’s weight, sending the man head over heels into the icy water.

The decidedly undignified landing sent up a wave of water that quite thoroughly doused the younger male and sent him into another bout of shivering and sputtering. As the other surfaced with a devil-may-care grin, the boy’s horror was quickly replaced with relief the fool hadn’t hurt himself, mock-anger for giving him such a wretched scare, and mirth over the ridiculousness of it. “That was absolutely brilliant!” He exclaimed with punch to Gabe’s arm and a smile that threatened to go from ear to ear. “I wish someone other than Beast and I had seen your graceful plop. No one would believe me if I told them this.”

"Well, a few might." Linwood amended with a laugh. "We certainly had our moments back then, didn't we? I'll never forget the aftermath of our 'special' blueberry tarts. I was certain Cook's face would never be any color but red after that."
