Kynan (Ky) Montgomery (Image is owned by this guy.) (The outfit he wears looks like this ) Nikolai Dovstoi (I don't know who this image belongs to.) Keeping his lead of several feet, the tall, dark haired Kynan Montgomery allowed his vivid blue gaze to sweep over the flat plains of the vista before him; his ears, eyes, and instinct all telling him that there was trouble lurking nearby. He didn't know whether to expect bandits or animals, but either way, he'd rather stay ready than be taken by surprise. With a subtle motion, he gestured for Adram and Mia to fan out, flanking him evenly on either side but not so far away as to be out of reach should one of them be attacked. To his right was Mia, and ice blue eyes kept flitting sideways to catch a glimpse of her as they moved onward, toward the ever increasing sounds of battle that were coming from just over the next rise. From his left, he could see the sun glinting on Adram's knife, and he grinned to himself when he remembered the way the skinny male moved as he fought. Still, that blade could be lethal, and Ky was glad that he'd managed not to end up on the wrong side of that blade as of yet. Creeping up to the ridge and peering over it, Kynan looked down, and watched the battle that was unfolding below them. He could see a small group of males standing together, though the majority of them appeared to be far too young to be engaging in the sort of fight they were currently facing. The only one who appeared as though he knew what he was doing was a large brute of a man who stood out in front and skillfully deflected the short-range weapons that were aimed at his group. Behind the ragtag bunch of men was a group of three women and 5 young children, ranging in age from 5 years to not even a year old. Two of the three women were holding infants, while the rest of the children in the women's skirts and cried out in fear. The large man appeared to be doing a good job of holding their attackers at bay, but then one of the bandits fired a gun into a boy at his side, and the large man bellowed in rage, then struck out with his sword to instantly kill the boy's murderer. Pursing his lips in though, Kynan finally pulled his rifle from where it was usually strapped across his back, and, after loading it and taking deadly accurate aim, he pulled the trigger and launched his shot into the back of one of the bandits. He went down without a word. Jerking his head, he motioned for Mia and Adram to help the small group in any way they could. Down below, Nikolai Dovstoi fought as hard as he could, lunging in front of his cousins, nephews, and brother in order to protect them from the shots and stabbing knives that were aimed at them. Already, the burly, large-chested man was covered with blood, though how much of it was his, his now-dead cousin, or their attackers, he couldn't say. He fought with both sword and gun, shooting the targets who were too far away to reach with his sword, and slashing and slicing with the blade when one of them came too near. His long black hair whipped around him as he moved, and his bare chest glistened with sweat and blood. He could hear the children crying behind him, and his sisters and aunt trying to comfort them. He'd heard his aunt cry out as her son had been shot, and he'd had to force himself not to listen to the sounds of her sobbing. All he wanted to do was drop his weapons and gather his fallen cousin close to keep him from being stepped on by the callous feet of their attackers. |

Adram rushed ahead at Kynan's signal. That was his job in the first place, after all. He went down the ridge with the agility and grace of a gazelle, jumping and skipping, a smirk on his lips. The bandits ahead were way too busy trying to find a way to get past that ox of a man to pay attention to a furetive silhouette clad in the colors of dust. "Always a show-off." Mia remarked as she watched the wiry scout make his way down. He suddenly stopped and stood still, and if Mia hadn't known about him, she never would've found him again. The girl brushed a short strand of jet black hair off her face and pulled a pair of goggles down over her clear green eyes. Using one of her little smoke-bombs here would inconvenience more than just her enemies, unfortunately, so she had to do this the more conventionnal way, by shooting the bad guys until they were all dead. Adram crouched behind a boulder. He tuned out the rest of the world; crying women, men shouting angrily, the sun blazing overhead, the clash of steel against steel, and the dull thump of steel against flesh. All that mattered was the hunt. When one of their men was shot in the back, some of the bandits turned around in confusion, searching for the intruders. One of them made the mistake of running past Adram's hiding place. The hunter pounced and slashed at his leg before he realised that the enemy was already among them. A second swing of the blade brought him down for good. Another bandit rushed at him, guns blazing, but Adram was already gone. Fast and deadly, the hunter dispached his new opponent with nothing more than a few holes in his dust-colored cloak. Hmm, annoying, that. Will have to get Mia to fix these. A man got in a lucky shot that tore through Adram's cowl. Not lucky enough. The hunter dashed away, unhurt, but the shot unveiled the part of his face that wasn't hidden by his high collar, spilling a mass of unruly hair the color of rich mahogany. It also revealed the hunter's intense black eyes, darker than the finest china ink. |

Ky couldn't help the quiet chuckle that rolled out of him at Mia's pithy statement, even as he took aim and shot down another bandit. "But that's why we're glad he's on our side, love," the leader purred quietly against the stock of his rifle. The endearment slipped out unnoticed, as he had a tendency to give everyone nicknames and the one he'd immediately chosen for Mia was 'Love.' "At least he's not a show-off with no reason." Quietly and methodically, he continued to pick off the straggler bandits who were somehow separated from the group, watching them catch his lead and fall one by one. As he took aim, he was also very careful to keep an eye out for Adram's dust-colored form so he didn't accidentally get hit in the crossfire. It wouldn't do for him to hit one of his own, after all. Barely aware of anything outside the circle of bandits that seemed to be steadily closing in on him and his family, Nikolai was startled when he heard the initial blast from the rifle, as he knew none of his own possessed such a weapon, nor had he seen any of their attackers with one. Thus, when he heard the shot again and saw another bandit go down, he could only guess that help had arrived. Still, he was a bit too busy to concentrate on anything but keeping his family safe, and though he was vaguely aware of a human-shaped form that seemed to be present one moment and gone the next, he kept his eyes on the advancing bandits and, between stepping in front of his relatives to keep them safe from harm, he lashed out with his sword as often as he could - slashing the chest of one bandit, running another through the stomach, and relieving a third of his sword hand. He had no thoughts of mercy at this point; his goal was only to keep his remaining male relatives alive long enough to get them to safety. He could still hear the women and children behind them crying out each time one of them took a hit. Unfortunately, with his attention on the bandits in front of him, he didn't see the group that was coming up behind them until it was too late. He had no inkling of what was going on until he heard a frightened scream that seemed to be born of nothing in particular, and when he turned around to see who had made the noise, it was to watch his sisters, aunt, and all the children being driven away in a vehicle that he could never hope to catch on foot. Sadly, as he was turned away, three of the bandits slipped past him and slid their swords or knives into the ribs of his brother and two of his nephews, and the three boys went down without so much as a whimper, dead before they hit they ground. ((I could have made it longer and completely ended the fight in this post, but I figured Mia and Adram should have a chance to respond first. ^_^)) |

Between the men getting gunned down by his allies and those who ran off with their prize, Adram soon found himself short on targets. He turned to the last few survivors who were causing some heavy damage among the refugees. If he wasn't fast enough, that mountain of a man might finish them off before he had a chance to have his fun... There was a way, though. A cheat. It would rob him of the satisfaction of getting up close to his target, see the fear in their eyes as they saw their doom approaching, but after all... all that mattered was the hunt. "You." He called out, and one of the bandits turned at the sound of his voice. He was still much too far to engage him in melee combat, but his sword was thirsty for blood. Adram drew his arm back and threw it with all his strenght. The blade burried itself through the man's chest up to the hilt, cutting short his cry of confusion. Adram was not so foolish as to get rid of his only weapon before the last foe was down. He drew his cloak back, revealing a collection of finely-balanced throwing knives. All but one of them found their target. Adram ran out of prey. Mia carefully navigated down the ridge. She looked young for such an experienced killer, small, delicate, barely over her teenage years. However, the girl's deadly aim was proof of her own abilities. Adram ackniwledged her with a nod as she walked past. It was a mystery to no one that the hunter harbored a fondness for the girl. Not that he ever expected her to return his feelings, not when there was much better material than him to build a relationship with. She stopped in front of the surviving refugees and holstered her weapon. "The city's not too far. We have a vehicle, we can help carry the wounded." She lowered her voice and motionned to one of the victims. A child, not even a man yet. "The dead, too, if you want." |

Nikolai couldn't contain the nearly silent whimper of pain, grief, and loss that escaped him as the strangers approached. His attention was on his brother, who lay broken and bleeding in the dirt, his lifeless eyes - a light green that was nearly identical to Nikolai's own - staring upward sightlessly. The giant of a man barely heard the words that were spoken to him, though he must have nodded or made some sort of sound that was taken for acceptance, because he soon found himself lifting the bodies of his cousins and brother into the vehicle that had been mentioned, his one remaining cousin and one nephew standing silently aside, watching in shock as their relatives were removed from the scene of battle. Finally, Nikolai turned his grief stricken gaze onto the three who had approached him, nodding in silent thanks at the girl who had made the offer before turning his attention to the man who seemed to be their leader. "Thank you for your help. I... would probably be on that vehicle with my family had you not come along when you did. I owe you my life, and those of my nephew and cousin, as well." Holding out one massive hand, he offered it out, along with his name. "I am Nikolai." After a brief hesitation, Kynan accepted the hand and shook it firmly, his own gaze, while sympathetic for this man's loss, was free of pity. Nikolai had fought well and bravely, and he'd done all that he could to protect his family from the bandits that had attacked them. "I'm Ky," he finally answered, then, pulling his hand away and gesturing at Mia and Adram, he introduced his team. "This is Mia; and this is Adram." Turning again to the girl, Nikolai inclined his head once again in greeting and shook her hand, then he turned to the other male amongst them. His eyes lingered on the dust colored form, and he realized that this was the man who'd been there one moment, then gone the next. Before he could think about it, he asked curiously, "Why is it that I could not see you? You were there beside me one moment, and the next you were nowhere to be found. How?" |

Adram looked up from his task of picking and cleaning up his blades, surprised at being called out. People always talked to the leader, not to the skinny, freaky youth whose face was half-hidden by his collar. He wasn't much of a people person, to say the least. Kynan and Mia knew this. They were both charismatic, they both had a way with words that Adram could only admire. Still, the big man had spoken, and somehow he'd decided to talk to him. Wiping the last of his knives down on its target's clothes before straightening up, he tugged his collar down a little, showing a surprisingly youthful face. The hunter couldn't be much more than twenty. He did have a scar, though, as most people did when they lived a life of danger and murder. It ran from his left cheekbone to the corner of his lips, a faded white outline that spoke of past violence. However, the man was smirking slightly despite this gruesome old wound. "I'm just that good." Adram explained with a light shrug. "If you're the right color and move the right way, people just won't see you." Of course, there was more to it than this, but he wasn't going to tell all his secrets, was he? Mia took the relay, knowing fully well that it was only a question of time before Adram said something mean that got them in trouble. "We should hurry and get everyone on board. This band might come back with friends, after what we did to them. Besides... we shouldn't take too much time. They will not be nice to their new... guests." |

Stepping back, his gaze roving over the carnage that had been wrought on Nikolai's family, Kynan gently draped his arm over Mia's shoulders and pulled her close to his side. It was a familiar gesture, but one that was not always accepted and could easily be played off as a one-armed hug if his affection was rejected. Sometimes it was; other times it was accepted and even returned. Watching the dust colored figure pull down his collar, Nikolai's eyes widened beneath his shaggy mop of long hair to see how young his knife-wielding rescuer looked. "Bozhe moĭ!*" he muttered quietly, his piercing green gaze on the young man's face. "You can not be much older than 20. What possessed you to lead such a harsh life at so young an age?" Then, realizing that he was being rude, the large bear of a man bowed his head in apology. "Forgive me... I did not think before I spoke." He knew there was more to Adram's talent than he was letting on, but he also knew that the young warrior would not likely give up his technique easily. Turning to the girl, Mia, he nodded his head once, and gestured over his shoulder for his remaining relatives to board the vehicle. "Again, I thank you for your help. Once we reach... where ever we are going, I will make certain my brother and cousin are settled before I go after my aunt and sisters. I.... I do not like to think of what their captors will do with them." Urgency lent a note of steel in the large man's voice, and he spoke with conviction, though he kept his voice down to keep his young relatives from overhearing. "I will make them pay for what they have taken from me..." *"My God!" |

Adram let the comment pass with nothing more than a shrug. He didn't care about anyone being rude to him, quite the contrary. Nikolai's appology made him more suspicious than any impolite question he could ask. "Age means nothing to a killer." He said, indifferent. By his tone, it would be hard to determine if he was talking about himself, or... If Mia noticed how close Kynan was getting to her, she certainly didn't seem to mind, though she didn't lean into the man's embrace either. "I don't think we have the time to wait until your family has a home again." She told Nikolai gravely. "I can come with you and help out, but I think Adram should try to find out where the raiders went, and contact us from there." The youth crossed his arms with a nod. "Tracking a big heavy truck through the wastelands? Shouldn't be too hard." His gaze, for half an instant, traveled to Kynan, whose arm was still around Mia's delicate shoulders. He was aware that there was just a little bit more than friendship there, that the man had connected with Mia better than he could ever wish to. He respected Kynan as a leader. It didn't mean he didn't... resent this, just a little tiny bit. Leaving Kynan alone with the girl? Like hell... "Maybe you should come with me, boss." Adram said with a smirk. "Just to watch my back." |

Unsure what to make of Adram, Nikolai let the matter rest. He didn't know if the man was indifferent for his own survival, or simply heartless. Either way, the large man didn't have the energy at the moment to figure him out. Instead, he turned his gaze to Mia, grateful for the offer of help. "Perhaps there is... an inn..... where my family can stay? At least until I come back with the women." Looking the girl square in the eyes, he nodded and murmured, "I would be glad of the help." His gaze dropped to the arm that Kynan had draped over the girl's shoulders, and he wondered vaguely if there was something behind the action. Not that it mattered either way to him, as he didn't have the time for such frivolities. Kynan, upon hearing Adram's suggestion, dropped his arm from Mia's shoulder and nodded. "You're probably right," he answered, then grinned and shoved the smaller man jokingly. "Eventually, you're going to run out of knives, and you'll need me there to save your scrawny ass." Gathering his pack and swinging it up onto his broad back, he shouldered his shotgun and, after dropping a kiss on Mia's forehead, pulled Adram along by the arm. "Come on, you. Quit mooning over Mia and let's get this done so Nikolai can get his family back, and we can get back to work." Watching the two men walk away was a struggle for Nikoali, as he wanted to join them. Not for any scouting mission, but to kill the murdering bastards who'd taken his family from him. Still, it was probably best to wait and be patient - they could learn more about the enemy if they observed them first. To give himself something else to do, he hopped into the back of the truck with his slain family and two remaining relatives, his gaze turned in the direction that Kynan and Adram had taken even as they bumped and jarred along in the vehicle. He would see his dead family buried, and what was left of his family settled before he left to finish what was started. |

Adram rolled his eyes. "Please spare me your jesting, o brave and wise leader." There was a clear feeling that any man lesser than Kynan would have paid dearly for this kind of comments. He didn't hate the man, even though Kynan had earned Mia's attention so easily. In truth, he had no illusions about his chances with any lady as fair as she was. Skinny and weird, with a scarred face and a decidedly prickly sense of humor, chicks had to be pretty neurotic to find him attractive, especially next to their charismatic leader. As Mia drove away with the survivors, Adram set out without waiting for Kynan to catch up. They were always in touch, thanks to an effective comm system that had cost the small band of mercenaries quite a handsome sum. The system had saved their lives on more than one occasion, so it was entirely worth it. They even had an extra unit, as there used to be another man in their group... but that was a long time ago. He never did get along well with the guy anyway. Mia drove in silence, keeping an eye on the small map screen on her dashboard. She knew where the town was, but a pair of red blinking dots currently heading out into the wastelands told her that her companions were still alive. |

Knowing how prickly Adram was only spurred Kynan on to continue his teasing, well aware that had he not been their group's 'leader,' he would probably find himself dead in the dirt. Still, if his day had to come, he couldn't ask for a more honorable death than to die by the hand of one of the most skilled hunters alive. Recent events still clogging up his thoughts, however, prevented Kynan from making any more snide remarks as he set off with Adram; preferring instead to concentrate on the task ahead of them. Finding the bandits who had taken Nikolai's family, then reporting back to disclose their whereabouts. Vaguely he wondered what Nikolai would do once he had his family back. Would the man be content to settle down in the little town with what was left of his family? Or was he like Kynan himself? A warrior; seeking and needing adventure? Perched in the back of the truck was not very comfortable, but Nikolai wouldn't have abandoned his family in favor of sitting more comfortably. Instead, he cradled his young cousin in one arm, and rested his large hand on his nephew's arm, imparting as much comfort as he was able with the bodies of their slain relatives lying around them. He was unsurprised by the tears that flowed freely down the cheeks of both boys, but Nikolai staunchly refused to allow his own grief to show. He had to be strong for these boys, especially now that their mothers had been taken away. As they pulled into town, he looked around curiously, wondering how easily he would be able to procure accommodations for his two young relatives. Fortunately, he had a little money saved and, after asking around, managed to find a hotel room that would provide food for a relatively decent price. Having seen to his living relatives, and unable to sit and do nothing while waiting for news of the bandits, Nikolai begged a shovel from the hotel manager, and, stripping off his shirt, began to arduous and heart wrenching process of burying his family just outside of town. |

It wasn't long before Nikolai found himself surrounded by other men willing to help him. Mia had called in a few favors, and since some of them had gone through times just as hard as Nikolai's family just experienced, it wasn't as if she had to twist their arm to get them to work. Besides, she was rather well-liked around town, as well as being a little feared by those who heard of her team's adventures. She would have joined herself, had she not been busy watching over her companions over the car's map system, a real guardian angel concerned by the safety of those dear to her heart. Adram was glad to notice how deep and easy to follow the tracks were. Had they been any more obvious, he would have been suspicious of a trap. Those they were after weren't known for their brilliance, though. Plenty of bandit gangs were inbred families just a step ahead of retardation, from his experience. No wonder they were ready to kill to get new blood in the gene pool. It didn't excuse the massacre scenes they'd stumbled upon before, but it certainly explained them. He raised a gloved hand as they neared the top of a small hill, to tell Kynan to stop here, before going on a lot more slowly and cautiously. Crouching, he took a short peek over the hilltop. "We're here." He announced. "Their camp is in the old junkyard." |

Nikolai was surprised when he found himself joined by other men of the town; he had expected the task of burying his family to be a solitary one, and one that he was ready and willing to undertake alone. However, he felt a certain amount of relief at the help, and admitted to himself that he was weary from the fight and would be lucky if he had the strength to bury his family and go after the bandits who had kidnapped the women and children. Now, at least, he knew he would be able to rescue his sister and his aunt when Kynan and Adram returned from their scouting mission. He worked in silence for a time; muscles rippling as his shovel bit through the earth and created graves for his family, and sweat gathered and dripped down his body as he worked beneath the hot sun. Finally, though, the work was finished, and the last of his deceased relatives lay beneath the ground. He thanked each of the men who had helped him with sincerity and an offer of help if ever it was needed. Then, alone, he knelt in the dust and dirt and said a quick prayer to whatever gods might have been listening for the souls of his family. That done, he stood and made his way back to the vehicle, slipping into the interior next to Mia with a sigh. "How goes the scouting party?" he asked quietly, his eyes going to the odd looking machinery she'd had her gaze glued to. Kynan, for his part, halted in his tracks when Adram held up that gloved hand, then nodded silently at the information. "Let's go back to Mia and Nikoali then. It doesn't look like the bandits are going anywhere else any time soon." Turning away from the hill that separated them from the old junkyard and the bandits camp, he headed back toward town, eager for the prospect of another battle. |

Adram backed away, clearly unhappy about being told to stop his investigation. "Wouldn't it be wiser to take a closer look around, see what kind of defenses they have?" He asked, running to Kynan's side. "This way we're not running into anything unexpected. I'm just saying." His leader was wise to make him stop, though. Adram was known to have attempted to single-handedly butcher an entire bandit camp while his partners were away to plan their attack, and things almost turned VERY bad for him then. He was lucky his wounds hadn't left too many scars. Adram just wasn't that concerned for his own safety. Mia looked up when she heard the big man slip in the seat next to hers, and gave him a brief smile. "I think I know where they are. I'm just waiting for confirmation from Kynan's radio." She put a small hand on the man's arm, a hand that looked like a child's, but which had the roughness and scars one would expect from someone who lived her life as a warrior and adventurer. "We will get them back." |
