Kelly felt his stomach twist up painfully in his belly. Geez, it really had been his friends who had beaten up the shorter guy. The blond was silent a moment or two as his eyes trailed up and down a long Zander's face. They flicked down to watch the flash of the brunet's stomach. Strangely enough the bruise wasn't what his eyes went to first. Kel felt his abdomen tighten and his breath seem to catch in his throat. Even with the nasty bruise, Zander.... had a pretty nice body.

... Why the hell was he even thinking about the nerd's body?

When the shirt was quickly pulled back down, Kel's brows furrowed as he looked back up to Zander and watched the other blot at his lips. His hands flexed a bit at his sides. Already he could sense that need to 'flight' overcoming the brunet once more, and his brows furrowed as he reached a hand out and softly took his upper arm, to prevent him from running.

"... Zander, it's lunch time. There's no lunch right now," he reminded him, eying him suspiciously. "... Look I know... I know those guys ... just beat you up but, I won't. Okay? ... For fucks sake, quit running away from me like you think I'm going to deck you just for being in my sight. I'm... I'm not like them, do you understand?" his brows furrowed as he looked at the other man.

He looked over the brunet's busted lip again, and he slid his hand down from his upper arm to his wrist. "... Look, let's either take you to the nurse or... We have time, I culd take you to one of our homes... properly tend to that lip of yours and get some ice on your bruises," he looked at the brunet's eyes. "I'm not gonna let you go till you agree to one or the other," he informed in a surprisingly gentle tone.

Okay so maybe Zoey would be worrying about where he was but... he qas quite sure when he told her her brother needed some assistance she'd be more than accepting of his being absent for lunch. Though why he felt so insistent on helping the other guy... Was it just because he was his girlfriend's brother? Arguably if he just let him run off that would be fine. But he refused... refused to let him run. He was going to help, dammit, one way or another.

Fortunately for them both, Zander had completely missed the way Kelly's eyes had raked over his bared torso, too focused on trying to figure out how he was going to keep that hidden from the other gymnasts.

When his arm was taken though, a quiet gasp slipped past his lips, and the nerd shook his head vehemently. However, he'd seen that particular look in the blonde's eyes before; the bulldog tenacity that said he wasn't going to give up until he'd achieved whatever goal he'd set his mind to. In this case, patching Zander up.

"Going to the nurse would just cause more trouble. If I tell her what happened, she'll report it, and your buddies will get suspended for fighting. Then they'll come after me again for ratting them out. It's happened before. If I don't tell her what happened, I'll get suspended, and they'll call my parents. If that happens, they'll take away my gymnastics, and I'll get to hear another lecture about how I'm such a disappointment as a son." Lowering his voice and beetling his brows together, he did an oddly accurate imitation of his father. "Zander, you've got to quit being such a wimp. Why can't you man up and be more of an athlete like your sister?" Next, he pitched his voice two octaves higher, clasped his hands together fretfully in front of his chest, and batted his eyelashes in yet another accurate imitation; this time of his mother. "Oh, Zander, I just don't understand how you can be such a social outcast when your sister is so popular. Everyone likes her, but you don't have any friends. Why is that, son?" Dropping the stance, the bespectacled teen allowed his features to settle into their own natural arrangement, though anger and humiliation turned the corners of his mouth down and drew the corners of his eyebrows into little hooks. "What do you say to a question like that? How do you answer that? 'I'm sorry I'm such a failure, dad. Sorry I'm not the perfect, athletic son you wanted, but hey; you got Zoey instead.'"

Realizing suddenly that he was talking to his sister's boyfriend, Zander's eyes widened in stunned horror, before he shut them quickly and turned around to brace his palms on the sink.

"Shit... look, Kelly, none of that was about my sister. Zo's great. There isn't anyone I love more than I love her. But... she thinks everything's okay between my parents and I. She doesn't know that they compare me to her, and I'd rather she didn't find out." Raising his gaze to meet the jock's eyes in the mirror, Zander's pleaded with Kelly's to keep what he'd said confidential, between them.

Hearing the offer of a ride, Zander once again shook his head.

"I'm okay. I've had worse from them, believe me. Go enjoy your lunch with Zoey; it's almost over. I can walk home and be back before 5th hour is halfway over. Thanks, though."

Accepting without question that Kelly would much rather spend his remaining free time with his girlfriend, the nerd pushed gently past him and headed for the door. Then, recalling something else that Kelly had said, Zander paused and glanced back over his shoulder.

"I'm not running from you, Kelly. I never have. I'm just... not good with people. I don't know how to talk to them, and no one's ever really tried to talk to me, or to understand the things I say. It's just easier to be left alone than to try again and again and never succeed." He offered an oddly sweet smile for the jock before he turned, hoisted his backpack higher on his shoulder, and turned to exit the bathroom.

Kelly was startled as Zander went on to essentially pour out... a lot of stuff. Deep, dark, scary stuff. Stuff you didn't learn a bout a person till usually much much later into any sort of relationship. Feelings of insecurity, of uselessness, of jealousy, of worthlessness...

He didn't get a long with his parents? They preferred his sister? He wouldn't go to the nurse... Kelly's brows furrowed. Okay... Okay there was a lot more going on here than sheer physical wounds, that much was certain. He was still a bit tongue tied though as to what he could do. He'd not exactly been in a consoling position before. The other jocks never... talked about stuff like this. After all 'real men don't have emotions'... as the old stupid stereotype went.

Kel watched as the brunet headed for the door, and paused to inform him he wasn't good with people. So it wasn't just a personal agenda? Wasn't just him running from Kel specifically? If what he said was true then it made sense. Before the shorter guy could make his escape for the second time that day, Kel did something that surprised even himself.

He scooped up the smaller guy in his arms and slung him over his shoulder like a sack of flour, then headed out into the hall.

Okay so maybe it was a bit risky, being seen like that. But it was lunch time. Everyone was in the cafeteria eating... or probably already got in their cars to go out to eat. Despite any struggling he got from the brunet, he walked out to the school parking lot. He dropped Zander into the back seat of his convertible, then slid into the driver's seat and before Zander could scurry out of the car he'd already pulled out of the space.

"This is faster," he informed then, once they got out to the main road. Walking would take too long. Besides... the nerd was injured. He shouldn't be walking right now. He stole a glance to Zander in the rear view.

"And if you're so worried about your parents seeing you then we'll go to my place and fix you up. Now just lean back and relax, okay?" he informed so casually.

A startled shout escaped the nerd as he felt himself being grasped and lifted, then a pained groan followed as he was flung none-too-gently over the jock's shoulders. It took every ounce of willpower he had not to let the tears that came instantly to his eyes at the rough treatment of his bruised stomach fall down his cheeks.

That would only cement his humiliation and mortification, anyway.

Bitter words stuck in his throat as he was toted through the deserted hall like so much baggage, then outside into the parking lot, and finally deposited into the back seat of Kelly's car.

The thought of trying to scramble out of the jock's car did cross his mind, but he didn't attempt it. He hurt too badly to begin with, and the rough ride out from the bathroom hadn't helped any. He stared sullenly through his bangs as the blonde got in and informed him that they'd go to his house instead, but he made no response.

It wasn't until they'd pulled into the garage at Kelly's house that he bothered to speak.

"Do you always expect people to do as you command? And when they don't, or they voice their desire to do something else, do you always haul them bodily around?"

Pushing himself up off the seat took quite a bit of effort, as his ribs and stomach screamed at him the whole way. However, he refused to be tossed over the jock's shoulder again, so he did his best and finally managed to maneuver himself out of the car.

"It's not that I'm not grateful for the help.... but I can't help but wonder if you're helping me because of who I am, or because of who my sister is." After a moment, he raised green eyes and searched the jock's face. "Because if it's the latter, and you're just trying to earn brownie points with Zo, then I think I would rather you just didn't help me at all."

Kelly spared a glance over his shoulder, after pulling into the garage. He quirked a brow as the other guy asked him if he typically bullied people around when they wouldn't do as he asked. He smirked then, turned off the car, and got out. "Nope. Just you. You're kinda stubborn, if I can be honest," he chuckled softly. He walked over to the backseat door, and he opened it, then offered Zander a hand up.

He looked at the brunet's eyes, thorugh his glasses. Another query. A question of helping him because of who he is or who his sister is. Kel pulled the brunet out of the car and to his feet, then closed the door. "Maybe it's a little bit to do with your sister, but not because I'm out to earn 'brownie points'." he informed quietly. Before Zander knew it, Kel's hand had found the brunet's. He lead him into the door to the kitchen.

"... But since you are her brother... Honest to god, I want us to be able to get along. Is that so much to ask?" he looked over at him. He pulled out one of the kitchen chairs, and made the shorter guy sit.

"And not just in a tolerable way. I was us to be comfortable. I want you to stop... running away." he sighed. He pawed around the cupboards in the kitchen, till he pulled out their family's first aid kit. He opened it up then, plucked out as cotton ball and some disinfectant, then soaked the ball.

He turned back to Zander then, knelt down till he was eye to eye with him and softly took the brunet's jaw in his hand. With the soaked cotton ball between his thumb and forefinger of his other hand, he glanced at the shorter fellow's eyes.

"This is gonna sting," he informed, giving the warning, before he began to gently blot at his busted lip. His eyes were poised on the brunet's lip, as a gentle look of concentration took over the jock's face.

Zander cocked one eyebrow in amused agitation. "I'm stubborn because people keep telling me what they think is best for me, instead of letting me make up my own mind." He waited a moment for the light barb to sink in - as that was basically what Kelly himself had done - then grinned lightly; only a slight quirking of the undamaged corner of his lips so he didn't rip the already-torn skin further.

"Thanks," he offered belatedly at the helping hand that had pulled him gently from the back of the car. He'd thought he could make it out on his own, but it was apparent that he required more help that he was willing to admit.

Having if offered before he'd even requested had been nice, and the nerd couldn't help the softening of his attitude and prickly demeanor.

At least, until the jock's hand slid down his arm and linked fingers with his own.

Shock stole Zander's expression, leaving him slack-jawed and dumbfounded at the feeling of Kelly's fingers twining through his. He realized that the gesture had not been one of romance, but rather one of someone trying to help him and lead him to where he needed to go. Still, it caused his heart to hammer wildly in his chest, and left him hoping that the blonde couldn't hear it.

He sat down on the chair when he was pressed into it and tried desperately to focus on the jock's words. It was far easier to concentrate when that warm, large palm wasn't pressed to his; the long, agile fingers curling so easily around his own knuckles and imparting a sense of comfort that he knew was absolutely ridiculous.

If Kelly knew the kind of thoughts Zander was entertaining about him, or the feelings he harbored, things would quickly become anything but comfortable.

He absorbed all that was said quietly, tipping his face slightly for the required administration, though he winced slightly and hissed quietly at the sting. Other than that, he made no reaction to the jock's administrations.

When Kelly finally lowered the cotton ball, Zander peered over the rim of his glasses at the jock, green eyes slightly hazy with pain and gleaming with confusion.

"But why does it matter?" he pressed gently. "If you're not trying to earn brownie points with Zo, why do you even care? I'm a nerd, Kelly. Aside from Zoey, nobody takes the time to worry about me, or to try to become... how did you put it?... comfortable with me." Taking a deep breath, he murmured, "And I told you... I've never run from you. I run from confrontation, because I don't like it; and I run from meeting new people because I'm shy and absurdly awkward; and I run from my parents because they make me feel inferior, and I don't like that either. But I've never run from you personally."

What he said was basically true... he wasn't running away from Kelly as a person. When he ran, it was more that he was running from his feelings for the jock, out of fear of the resulting confrontation that would likely occur should Kelly ever learn about those feelings.

His hand on his jaw was firm but gentle as he went about cleaning up his lip. He tossed the cotton ball and he softly eased his grip on the shorter guy. Though he didn't stand right up as Zander went about explaining why he ran. And asking why the hell Kel felt it was important enough to try and make nice with him like this. No one else did it.

The blond jock gave a little shrug. "I'm not a nobody, so maybe that's why." he smirked as he twisted the nerd's words around. "... What confrontation do you think you're gonna get from me? I know I've exchanged a few less than friendly words with you in the past, but I've never... ya know... beaten you up or anything. Why do you think I'd do that now?" he murmured, taking the word confrontation to simply mean he thought he'd beat him up, because Zander was a nerd and he was a jock.

He got up then, to put away the disinfectant. He then pulled out an ice pack from the first aid kit, gave it a crack, and it went from being warm to being cold. He walked back to Zander then, and offered it to him to put on his black eye. "... Should help with the swelling," He nodded as he looked to the brunet's eyes. He smiled a bit then, as he eased the glasses from his face. "Though you'll have to take off these for a bit," he chuckled. He folded them and set them on the nearby table.

Kel took a minute then to look at the brunet without the glasses hiding his face. His gaze softened. He smiled quickly, as he turned his gaze away and headed for the fridge. "Um... you want something to drink? I guess we'll have to hurry back to school soon," he mumbled as he pulled open the fridge door. Though he peeked over the door a moment, stealing another look at the nerd sitting in his kitchen.

"... And have you ever thought about contacts?"

There was something oddly unsettling about Kelly gripping Zander's chin and being so close to his face, even though he knew it was only to clean his lip. Their proximity set off little warning bells in the nerd's brain, and he averted his gaze or simply closed his eyes so he wouldn't be so tempted to lean into the jock; to press their mouths together and finally - gods, finally - find out how Kelly tasted on his tongue.

Despite his almost-heroic efforts to ignore how close they were, Zander's stomach was doing little flip-flops and loop-the-loops, and his hands began to tremble where they rested on his knees. Gripping his fingers tightly together so he wouldn't give himself away, the nerd breathed a silent sigh of relief when Kelly straightened and moved away him.

He didn't bother to correct the blonde's assumption that by 'confrontation,' he meant a physical one. What good would it do to try to correct him, anyway?

Breathing easier now, the nerd's green eyes followed Kelly as he crossed the room to put away the disinfectant and retrieve something else. He recognized it as an ice pack - he'd had to use one several times after pulling a muscle during training - but couldn't figure out where it was supposed to go. Surely the jock didn't mean for him to put it on his ribs?

But no, the blonde was pointing to his face and saying something about keeping the swelling down. Momentarily confused, the nerd frowned, then quickly flushed and averted his gaze when his spectacles were slipped right off his nose and set down on the counter beside him.

Without the plastic in front of his eyes, he felt sure that Kelly would be able to read everything he was thinking.

"Um.... no," he finally muttered to the question about contacts, holding the ice pack against his eye with one hand. "I mean, I have some... I wear them to gym meets. But.... I've never thought about wearing them for... you know.... every day." Giving a little shrug, he tried to inject a bit of humor into the situation. "People would just think I was trying too hard to fit in, anyway. I'd likely end up with more black eyes and split lips. I think I'll stick to my nerd status, thank you."

He still didn't understand why Kelly was helping him; the "I'm not a nobody," excuse seemed flimsy and lacking depth. Why would anyone who wasn't a nobody want to help him? Why would Kelly risk his reputation with the other jocks by hauling Zander out to his car, then taking the nerd to his own house?

Confused, his mind a muddled mess of thoughts and questions, Zander finally stood and placed the ice pack on the counter to retrieve his glasses. After slipping them over his nose to settle comfortably on his face, he raised his gaze to meet Kelly's eyes.

"Thanks for the help," he said quietly, unsure how to proceed. "I, um..... guess we'd better get back now."

Kelly had since yanked out two water bottles from the fridge. He looked over at the other guy, spared him a smile, then tossed the bottle in his direction. A light toss, hoping the shorter student could catch it. "... I think you'd be more likely to have girls all over you," he chuckled softly. He opened up his water bottle and took a sip.

"... At least that's how it worked for me. In middle school, I got contacts. That plus going up the sports food chain to football... and all..." he gave a shrug. He glanced over to the brunet then. "Besides, it seems like a shame to hide those eyes of yours," he mused.

He gave an agreeing nod as Zander insisted they head back to the school. He grabbed up his keys, kept his bottle in one hand, and soon headed out the door, back to his car.

Once they were seated, Kel rested his hands on the steering wheel, but didn't turn on the car just yet. He cleared his throat. "... Sorry for what they did to you," he murmured quietly. He smiled faintly, eyes flicking down to the company logo on his steering wheel.

"They're just jealous since they know high school is the prime of their life, but someone like you is gonna go places once graduation comes around." he chuckled a bit. He finally switched on the ignition, then soon was pulling the car out of the garage. His eyes lifted to glance in Zander's direction. He hadn't had the other guy in his car since he'd drive him home a few nights ago.

Zander managed to catch the water bottle that was tossed at him, though only just. He was momentarily startled by what the jock had said to pay much attention. Still frowning lightly and not even aware of what he did, the nerd unscrewed the cap and took a long drink to wet his suddenly parched throat.

"But.... girls have never been interested in me," he said softly, his gaze glued to Kelly's broad shoulders and running down the strong line of his back before snapping up to meet the jock's gaze as he turned. "I'm not... attractive. Not.... not like you. I'm quiet... and... and shy.... and not competitive in the least. Girls aren't interested in nerd. They want good-looking, muscle bound jocks. Guys like you."

Zander jumped as though he'd been physically slapped, startled by the pronunciation that he shouldn't hide his eyes. "You.... you like my eyes?" he asked quietly, a confused frown creating furrows between his eyebrows and lending him a softer look that changed the hard line of his mouth. "I.... thanks." A blush was spreading over his cheeks rapidly, and the nerd turned away to hide it, taking another deep drink of water and hoping against all hope that Kelly hadn't caught his slip.

He followed the jock out to his car and slid into the passenger seat unassisted, his mind still preoccupied with all that had been said. With his mind still turning over the various compliments he'd been handed, his reply to Kelly's apology was somewhat distracted. "Why?" he murmured, turning in his seat to face the blonde, an intense look on his face as he tried to puzzle it all out. "You didn't have anything to do with their attack, so why are you apologizing?"

He listened to what was said about what would happen after high school, and found himself reaching out to touch Kelly before he'd even thought about it. Pressing his fingertips to the skin of the jock's forearm, Zander jumped slightly at the contact but didn't remove his hand. Instead, he slid his fingers over the warm skin and taut muscle until he could curl his fingers around Kelly's forearm and rest his palm fully against the blonde's skin.

"You're a great athlete, Kelly. And you're smarter than you give yourself credit for. I don't know about your friends, as I don't pay much attention to them, but I have a feeling you'll go farther than you think."

Surprised at himself and his boldness, Zander removed his hand from Kelly's arm and turned around in his seat to face forward. Now where, he wondered, had all that come from? He'd been so careful to protect his secret, especially from Kelly, and now here he was, on the verge of destroying all that work because the jock was finally being nice to him.

Kelly had noted the little blush, but... hadn't lingered too much on it. He figured perhaps he'd embarrassed the other guy. Maybe even felt uncomfortable. Best to not mention it and further his unease, though he'd be lying if he said the nerd didn't look nice with the pinkness in his cheeks.

The blond had about to put his focus back on the road when there came the warm hold on his forearm. He blinked twice, spared a glance down to the slender hand about his forearm, then looked up to Zander a moment before having to put his eyes back on the road... for fear of crashing or hitting something. He wasn't so focused on Zander's words, so much as the feel of his hand on his arm. Yeesh, he felt hyper aware in those moments, from the warmth of his palm to the length of his fingers nestled about his arm.

His brows furrowed, as he tried to piece together what had been said to him while his attention had been entirely elsewhere. "... Yeah? ... Yeah I know. I mean..." He licked his lips a bit. "Wasn't trying to insult myself." he chuckled. "I'm... I'm not really like em, the rest of those guys. So I'm sure I'll do fine. And you will too." He nodded. The flesh felt... oddly cold as Zander withdrew his hand. Kel stole a glance back over at the nerd beside him, but said nothing. He cleared his throat.

Nope... wasn't about to admit the touch was kinda nice. Maybe it just reminded him of Zoey. Though he swore whenever they were close he'd never been that god damn aware of all those little details. Never had been when it came to Zoey. Wasn't sure... what that meant.

Kel went rather quiet after that, as he tried to occupy his mind with road signs and stop lights. Though soon enough he pulled into the high school parking lot and turned off the car. He didn't get out immediately though. He leaned back in his seat.

"... Might be fun, sometime... Zoey and I, and you and another girl could go on a little double date," he chuckled. "We could go bowling or to the zoo or something..." he mused, then gave a shrug. He looked over at the nerd finally then, and spared him a soft smile. "Or even just you, me and Zo... I think that'd be fun," he grinned. "Think about it?" he added, with a surprisingly hopeful look. He then opened up the car doors and slid out. He grabbed up his bag and slung it over his shoulder.

Zander noticed the way Kelly seemed to fumble a bit as the nerd touched him, but he put it down to the jock being uncomfortable with the brunette's touch; not that it was unexpected, but it still hurt to realize that despite the blonde's kindness that day, there was still that huge gap between them that would likely never be bridged.

With his thoughts running so negatively, he was surprised to hear Kelly asking him to go along with him and Zo on one of their dates. Before he'd even finished speaking, however, Zander was already shaking his head. "Thanks, but... I don't think so. I don't have a lot of time to do... stuff like that. Between school, homework, training, and my gym meets, there's not a lot of time to spare." Climbing stiffly from the jock's car, Zander shut the door quietly before continuing. "Besides, I know my sister. She wouldn't appreciate me tagging along on one of your... dates." He nearly choked over the last word, but managed to force it out without too much difficulty. "And... I don't really like being a third wheel. And, before you suggest that a girl be invited to go with me, none would have me anyway. So... thanks, Kelly. Really. But, no thanks."

With a small, though genuine smile for the blonde, Zander turned and loped easily back into the school, heading immediately for his next class though the lunch bell hadn't yet rung to signal that lunch was over. He was careful to keep his backpack away from his bruised ribs, and he kept his face lowered so that his hair fell forward and covered most of the bruising.

In his haste to put as much distance between himself and Kelly as possible lest the jock think of some other reason for him to tag along with him and Zo - and, really, why did he even want the nerd along on a date with his sister? - Zander passed right by his twin without seeing her.

Zoey glanced at her brother, saw the way he moved carefully and kept his hair over his eyes and knew - without seeing his face - that he'd taken another beating. Then her gaze moved out to the parking lot in the direction that Zander had come from, and her green eyes narrowed on her boyfriend as he walked toward the school. She came down to meet him, a brittle smile on her mouth and curiousity in her eyes.

"What's wrong with Zander?" she asked without preamble. "Since I know it wasn't you that used your fists on him - since you know I'd kick your ass if you hurt him - who did that to him? And why was he with you?"

She wasn't angry, but she was frustrated by her brother's lack of defense for himself, and upset that her boyfriend's friends thought it was okay to use their fists on someone just because he was smaller and more intelligent than they. Due to those emotions, her questions were rather more brusque than she'd intended them to be, but they were neither accusatory nor unkind.

The blond felt his own features tighten as Zander was already shooting down his idea. His throat tightened a tad, as he could do little more than nod. Alright... so Zander didn't like that idea. He got it. He gripped the steering wheel a bit. "... It wouldn't be a date if you came with us. It'd just be an outing. So don't... feel like you'd be a third wheel. Groups of friends go out all the time and work just fine," he tried to explain, but he had a feeling it likely fell on deaf ears. Zander was a bit... stubborn, if he did say so himself.

With nothing more than a little smile from the nerd leaving his car, Kel watched the brunet hurry back into the belly of their school. A heavy sigh pushed up through his nose and out of his lungs. He'd felt good back at the house. But now he felt... a bit down.

He grabbed up his bag and then closed up his car. The jock then made his way to the school, after pocketing his keys. Though a familiar yet still different face was at the front of the school to meet him. Kelly blinked twice as he saw Zoey standing out there waiting for him.

Before he could greet her with a charming smile, she threw that question out there. No buffer and not warning. He stopped in front of her. She could tell... He supposed it made sense a sister could tell if her brother had been having problems, as Zander had had earlier...

Kel let out a sigh as he rubbed the back of his neck. "... Jordan, Phil and Tony. They got him in the bathroom... somehow. It was when I went off to wash my hands I happened to find Zander and caught a glimpse of them leaving him in there." Kelly explained. He chewed at the inside of his cheek uneasily, as his worried eyes looked at his girlfriend. "... I just took him home to bandage him up." he gave a nod.

"... I suppose I can try to talk to the guys," he murmured, as his eyes flicked to the side. Even if he said anything he was doubtful it'd make much difference. And if he didn't ... phrase it right, hell, he might get exiled or some other High School clique BS.

Glancing to his watch, Kel then looked back to the girl in front of him. "Look, it's time to get to class. I'll see you after school, alright?" he pressed a quick peck to her cheek, then hurried past to get to his class halfway across the school.
