Zander continued to drink from the bottle of water, trying to pace his thirsty gulps so that he wouldn't get cramps. He lifted one dark eyebrow when told that it had been no trouble to offer the water, surprised at the almost easy-going manner from the jock. Still, he only shrugged and, when he finally lowered the bottle again, murmured, "I needed that. Thanks again."

Dropping his gaze to the plastic container in his hands, the nerd began to twist the cylindrical tube in his palms, keeping his focus lowered and his eyes away from Kelly's.

"I jog every morning," he responded quietly, shocked that the football player had even thought enough about him to be able to peg him as a runner or otherwise. "It's... part of my gymnastics training." He gave this explanation in a rush, half hoping that it wouldn't be heard. He'd never told anyone outside of his family about his extracurricular hobby, and he'd taken great pains to keep his toned body hidden at school so that no one would think to ask why a nerd like him had evident muscle. He wasn't bulky like the football players and wrestlers, but he had serious definition to the muscle he did have, and his arms bulged slightly from his training on the rings and the pommel horse, and his calves were also clearly defined from his jogging, tumbling, and vaulting.

Glad to have something else to focus on other than his own activities, Zander lifted his head slightly and offered a brief smile before dropping his gaze to the bottle in his hands once again. "Yeah, middle school was a long time ago. Sometimes I can hardly believe we're in high school. But, from what I remember, you've been always been athletic, even if it wasn't football." With a shrug, he asked quietly, "Why don't you join the track team then, if you miss it? I'm sure they'd be happy to have you."

Then, quickly, before he lost his nerve, the nerd took a deep breath and blurted, "I'm really sorry about what I said this afternoon. I didn't mean to make you mad or insult you.... I guess I was just shocked and I wasn't sure what to expect or how to react. I just.... I'm sorry, is all." The last bit was spoken almost in a whisper, and Zander's chin was tucked nearly down onto his chest, his shyness and insecurities almost overwhelming him to the point of retreat; he wanted nothing so much at that moment expect to turn around and head in the opposite direction as fast as his legs could carry him.

However, this was his sister's boyfriend, as much as it pained him to acknowledge that, and he forced himself to stay where he was. He had to learn to get used to being around Kelly at some point, since it was likely that they'd be seeing a lot of each other if the jock and Zoey stayed together.

With his football worn hands sliding into his jeans pockets, Kel listened as Zander explained the fact he jogged every morning. A hint of a smile tweaked his lips, a bit surprised to further hear that the nerd also did gymnastics. In those moments his eyes lifted to wander along the body of the shorter teen. Hm... He never would have guessed that Zander was indeed very toned beneath the long sleeved shirts and jeans he wore. But if he did happen to see, he wouldn't have been too surprised, if Zander really was doing jogging and gymnastics.

"Never would have pegged you for a gymnast either. But I guess you gotta do something to stay so skinny huh?" he chuckled a bit, not meaning any real harm if he said anything personal or not. Though his eyes softened when Zander brought up the fact he could go back to the track team if he missed it so. He gave his head a shake, causing his shaggy blond hair to brush back and forth against his brow.

"Once you go football you never go back," he chuckled, almost sadly. It was like taking a step down the popularity food chain. And what popular person did that? No one...

But that topic didn't last long. He quirked a brow as Zander began to sputter out an apology for what happened that afternoon. The blond's face softened. A hint of a smile played over his lips. "... Don't sweat it, ok? It's in the past." he shrugged his shoulders. He himself wasn't exactly proud of how he'd reacted either.

"... Just to prove I'm not out to get you... you want me to drive you home? It's pretty late out, and you look kinda tired," he spoke. He continued to smile. Not snide, just... friendly. He shrugged a bit then. "But if you don't that's fine too." he added. "All I need is a simple yes or no," he added. Not the answer he'd been given earlier that day. No accusatory words....

Zander couldn't help but stare at Kelly as the smile on the jock's mouth transformed his face completely from 'enemy-most-of-my-life-and-secret-crush' to 'friend.' The nerd could almost believe, for a brief moment, that his sister's boyfriend actually liked him; wasn't just faking it for Zoey's sake; wasn't planning something nefarious; but honest to goodness liked Zander for the person he was.

Befuddled for a moment, he finally stammered, "Why..... why couldn't you... ah..... join the.... um.... track team? I mean... if you really wanted to, what else matters? Right?" He didn't bother to reply to the comment about his thinness, as he knew that he was slender and would likely never gain weight the way he wanted to. He'd be a rail for most of his life, and no amount of jogging or exercise would change that.

Still, he knew that Kelly wasn't trying to be insulting, so, rather than remark on his own thoughts about his appearance, he simply said nothing at all on the subject, and was glad to move on to something else. He was relieved when told that their argument from earlier was practically forgotten, and resolved to put the issue out of his mind completely and to try and maintain a better relationship with Zo's boy toy.

Caught completely off guard by the question of whether or not he wanted a ride home, Zander could only blink stupidly at Kelly for several long minutes before he finally ducked his head and, after pulling his glasses off his nose to clean them on the hem of his tank top, nodded shortly.

"I.... I would appreciate a ride," he murmured quietly, his eyes on the ground at his feet - though the sight was blurry - and his fingers moving restlessly over the glass of his spectacles to give himself something to do. Quite honestly, the last thing he wanted to do was get into a car with his secret crush, but he figured if Kelly could be cordial and extend the invitation for the second time in a single day, the least he could do was to accept.

Finally, he glanced up at the jock through the fringe of his bangs, without bothering to replace his spectacles. One corner of his mouth quirked up in an oddly sweet grin, and he teased, "Fair warning, I probably smell all.... funky. I've been running for a while."

The jock was quiet as he watched the nerd mull around the proposition of a ride home in his head. Honestly there wasn't too much to debate was there? He'd just guaranteed he wasn't out to 'get' the other, in whatever meaning that word might hold. No pranks, no devious plots. His hands remained in his pockets as his weight went from his right hip to his left.

Kel found himself oddly distracted as the nerd slipped his glasses from his face. His eyes followed the glasses into his hand, before flicking back up. And in those moments he looked over the rather appealing face of the brunet. His dark surprisingly strong brows. The slope of his well defined nose. Two pink petals that made up his lips, nicely defined. And his eyes. His eyes stood out the most without the dark rimmed glasses hiding them. Those bright eyes were a really pretty green color he'd never noticed before. All of his nice features were framed by his shaggy dark hair.

The blond jolted a moment when he realized Zander was talking to him. And he also took a second to comprehend what he'd just said. When he realized he'd agreed to the ride, that familiar laid back smile of his came back to his face. "Yeah? Alright. Let me get my keys," he informed, though he paused in his step as Zander spoke of any ... foul odors. A smirk played over his lips.

"Considering the stench I endure every day after football practice from a room full of funky smelling jocks, I doubt anything you got will be all that unbearable," he mused. He made a motion with his hand, beckoning the other teen to follow him. "Might as well come in for a moment. I'll grab my keys and then we can go," he nodded his head.

Kel's house was quite large. Considering the occupations of both of his parents, of course the house would be big. The front foyer was open, with stairs leading up to the second floor and a rather ostentatious chandelier hanging from the ceiling high above. Paintings hung here and there through the surprisingly empty house. Kel walked on through the foyer, assumingly with the nerd following. They passed the living room, where a decorative mantel and fireplace stood. A large family photo was framed and hanging over the fireplace. Two parents, a bobbed brunet for the mother and a rather stern, black haired fellow for their father. Two young children stood in front of them, both with dark hair and matching smiles. And then there was Kel, standing on his mother's other side. Ironic he seemed to be the only blond in the family. Other family photos sat on the mantel piece. Seemed like the jock's home was pristine and perfect.

Kel led the way into the kitchen, which also was equally neat. It hardly looked like anyone even used it to cook. Marble counter tops and cherry wood cabinets. Kel grabbed his keys off a hook by a door. He whistled over to Zander, for him to follow him out. He opened up the door, and it lead out to the garage. A three car garage. Kel casually stepped out into the garage, and walked over to a shiny, silver Jaguar XKR . Most likely a gift from his parents. He opened up the passenger side for Zander, then slid into the driver's side. The key soon sunk into the transmission, and the car roared to life. The engine purred like a dream. Kel spared a glance to the nerd, spared him a rather casual smile, then pushed the clicker for the garage, causing the large door in front of them to open.

"... I know you're probably thinking something like 'wow what a spoiled brat' right?" he chuckled a little as his eyes went to the road and they pulled out of the garage.

"For the record though..." he added as he pulled out of the drive way and onto the quiet neighborhood street. "I'm paying off Sarge for this sucker. Bit by bit. So no it wasn't a free gift," he mused quietly. He paused a second, then glanced to Zander. "Erm, my... dad I mean," he hesitated with the word. Sarge, that was what he called his 'father'. He lifted one of his hands, and rubbed it over his mouth a bit finding the word felt strange on his tongue.

But what a hefty chunk of change that car had been worth. He lowered his hand and his eyes flicked back over to Zander. "... Want the top down?" he grinned.

Zander offered a quick smile back, then ducked his head to replace his glasses. At the mention of the jocks Kelly hung out with it, and the smell that permeated the locker room that he had to endure every day, the nerd bowed his head in mock defeat and murmured, "Point taken."

He froze, however, when he was invited into the blonde's home, his green eyes wide behind his concealing spectacles. Faced with the choice of either following Kelly or being left standing on the sidewalk in front of his house, the nerd quickly followed his sudden host inside, taking the rare opportunity to glance around at his surroundings. He was awed by the sheer size of the house and had to remind himself to close his mouth lest he catch any unwanted bugs.

He paused for a moment to look at all the paintings, a sweet smile turning up his lips at the one of Kelly with his family - the he quickly wiped the expression from his face and hurried to follow the jock lest he get left behind. He thought it was slightly sad, though, that for all their wealth and apparent good taste, the house seemed more like a museum than a home. He wondered vaguely if Kelly ever got lonely or felt lost in the large house, but then shook his head and simply followed along.

The kitchen struck him as spotless and pristine, and he had to force himself not to ask if they ever actually cooked in the large room, or if they just ate there.

By the time they reached the garage and Kelly retrieved his keys, Zander was feeling overwhelmed and slightly sick to his stomach. He'd known, of course, that, being male and gay, he would never have a chance with a popular jock like Kelly, but now, seeing where he lived and the cars his family drove, that face was hammered home to him rather more forcefully than before.

He would be so dead if anyone ever found out about the crush he privately harbored for Kelly.

Slipping into the passenger seat when his door was held open - he thought it was odd that the jock would hold his door, anyway. Usually that was a gesture reserved for a girlfriend or significant other - Zander turned his head to look out the window, resolved to staying quiet and not bothering Kelly more than he already had.

As the blonde began to speak, though, the nerd couldn't hep but turn his head to watch. He was so animated when he spoke, and the bespectacled teen couldn't help but smile slightly, though it was gone by the time Kelly looked over at him again.

"You call your dad Sarge?" he asked. It was the first thing that came to mind, and though he didn't comment on the 'spoiled brat' statement, he was thinking that, yes, perhaps he might have thought that previously, but Kelly seemed to be doing a good job so far of destroying all of Zander's preconceptions.

Raising his gaze to the roof of the car when asked if he wanted the top down, he gave a noncommittal shrug. "Whatever, really. I've never bee in a car that could remove it's top, so I don't know what it's like to be able to say which I'd prefer. You choose... it's your car anyway."

The blond had since rolled down his window and rested his left arm on the rim of the door. He glanced to Zander out of the corner of his eye as the brunet informed him it was his choice if he wanted the top down. He smirked a bit, and he pushed a button on the dash, causing the top to slowly roll back while they were in motion, leaving them to feel the night air rush around them as the car moved along the quiet neighborhood streets.

"Considering that odor you seemed so paranoid over, I would think having the top down would be in your preference." he teased playfully. He kept one hand on the wheel as he relaxed in his seat. "Me on the other hand... I just rolled it down to look cool," he winked. Okay so he'd admit it, it was more of a showing off tactic for girls. So why the hell he felt like doing that around Zander... fuck if he knew.

The wind whipped through his shaggy blond hair, as a faint smile was on his lips. His brown eyes remained poised on the road, though he stole the occasional glance to his passenger. "... So uh..." he rolled his shoulders back. "Zo's told me that you're single. I'm kinda surprised she hasn't tried to hook you up with any of the girls at school?" he spoke casually. Sure, he'd insinuated that Zander had 'homo' fantasies, but that had been more of an automatic insult instinct more so than any sort of truth. Something he'd of course learned from the other guys around him. But it'd been more of reaction to being threatened. Zander had said his offer had been his attempt at charming him. And that... that just seemed to suggest that maybe the jock wasn't as straight as he thought he was. He pushed those thoughts from his mind as he cleared his throat.

Never in a million years would he have guessed that the nerdy fellow's eyes had been lingering upon him, as opposed to the many bookish girls around campus. He turned a corner in the car around the block. Just a few more streets and they'd be at the LeClerc household. Hm... maybe he'd say good night to Zoey in person while he was there.

Zander watched curiously as a button was pressed and the top slid back soundlessly, turning his head slightly and offering a small grin of appreciation. Then, closing his eyes and tipping his head back, he was quiet for several moments as he simply enjoyed the feeling of the wind brushing through his hair and slipping over his flushed face.

At the mention of the odor he'd warned Kelly about, the nerd raised one eyebrow and responded, "I was neither concerned nor paranoid. As an athlete, you know as well as I that exercise creates sweat, and thus, smell. I was simply warning you of the possibility of it's presence." Then, realizing that he had, once again, just launched into another explanation, Zander's eyes flew open and his head whipped around to face Kelly before his cheeks flamed and he bit his lip endearingly. "Christ, you're going to end up thinking that my favorite meal is my foot. I seem to chew on it quite a bit, don't I?"

Rolling his shoulders a bit to relieve some of the tension that had gathered there from being in such close proximity to his crush, Zander attempted to diplomatically answer that question that was asked of him.

"Zoey's.... not really a matchmaker. Besides, she doesn't think any of the girls at the school are good enough for me. What she doesn't realize is that no one wants to be seen with me, let alone be seen dating me. Thus... I remain single." Clearing his throat and uncomfortable with the turn their conversation had taken, the nerd turned his head to look out the window. His voice had held a slight tinge of self-deprecation that not even he recognized, as it was something that was ever-present within himself. "What about you?" he asked quietly. "I don't remember you dating much before my sister. Was that by design or chance?"

As they pulled up in front of the LeClerc house, Zander popped the lock on his seatbelt and was reaching for the door handle when he looked up and spotted Zoey running down the driveway. Turning quickly to Kelly, he offered a true, genuine smile that softened his features and made his eyes sparkle behind their lenses. "Thanks for the ride. I actually enjoyed it. And... thanks for the water, too."

By the time he'd finished speaking and had opened the door, Zoey was already leaning over the opened window on the driver's side to kiss Kelly and murmur a greeting that Zander couldn't hear.

Sure that he'd already been forgotten, he trudged slowly up the driveway to the front door and turned around at the door, a confused and slightly hurt frown marring his features. He watched Zo and Kelly talking and kissing for several moment before he finally simply shook his head and went inside, feeling somehow hurt that he could be so easily dismissed by not only his crush - which wasn't really surprising - but by his sister, too.

The weirdest part, however, was the realization that being forgotten by Kelly hurt far worse than being forgotten by Zoey did.

Hm... sister thought he was too good for all the girls at school. Zander on the other hand insisted it was because no girl at the school wanted him. He shook his head a bit. "Maybe grab a girl outside of school then, where you don't have a reputation?" he chuckled faintly. He spared a glance over at the brunet and smiled just a bit. He looked back to the road.

"... I had pressure to get a girlfriend. But I guess I didn't want one. A lot of the guys treat them kind of like accessories, like how you might wear a fancy watch or pair of jeans. I don't... see em that way. If I was gonna start dating it was because I liked the person not because I have to have someone..." Kelly gave his verdict on dating. Geh, he sounded old fashioned. But he left it at that. He was soon pulling up into the driveway of the LeClerc household.

Kelly noted his girlfriend running out of the house to come meet them. Though he spared Zander a glance as the brunet informed him he'd enjoyed the ride. Before he could even get a word in edgewise though, he felt Zoey's hands take his face and her lips were pressed to his. The jock's eyes closed on instinct, attention stolen from the girl's brother as he looked up at her.

"Hm... Night, Zo. Sleep well," he smiled a bit. He watched her head back up to the house. But he then ... noticed that Zander had long since gone inside. Brow tweaking, he wasn't quite sure how he felt abotu that. He shook his head, and smoothed a hand over his mouth and chin as his eyes flicked back to the passenger side seat where Zander had just been sitting.

A strange night... Kind of. He pulled out of the driveway and headed back home, getting a bit of time to himself to think.

The next morning, the blond had a sleepy look on his face and in his brown eyes. It was like walking in a fog, when one didn't have all the sleep they needed for the next day. He'd managed to find his seat in his morning math class, and soon was slumped over with his cheek on his textbook. His eyes closed. He had... a few minutes to take a quick cat nap. This was one of his more 'boring' classes, considering he was the only football player in the advanced math class. Only boring in the sense that he didn't have any of his 'buddies' to talk to. Though Zo's brother was in the class... But... could he really consider the other guy a friend? He would have liked to. But it was uncertain if their two 'kinds' could ever have a good friendship.

His blond brows tweaked as he leaned his cheek more against his arm than the hard text book. A tad bit more comfy that way...

Zander had a rough night as far as sleeping went, and he rose the following morning with a splitting headache and dark circles beneath his eyes. He told himself that it was because he'd gotten overtired from running the previous night, but cursed the dreams that had kept him awake, also.

Every time he'd closed his eyes, he'd seen the smile that had made him think, for a brief moment, that Kelly could ever be his friend; he'd seen the way the jock had grinned as he'd put down the top on his car and confessed that he only did it to look cool; the way he looked standing in the fading sunlight, holding out a bottle of water and asking if Zander was thirsty.

And yet, with such pleasant images to fall asleep to, every time he'd managed to doze, he'd dream of his sister leaning over the car and kissing Kelly; of her pretty, familiar face saying horrible things to him and telling him that Kelly would never be interested in a nerdy homo like Zander.

And even though he knew it had only been a dream, when he woke in the morning and Zo gave him her customary chipper greeting, he nearly snarled at her over breakfast and cast sullen and angry glares her way all morning. By the time they were ready to leave for school, he'd managed to put her in a foul mood as well.

Walking into math class that morning was Zander's own version of personal hell, as the one person he did not want to see was already seated with his head down.

Groaning quietly, the nerd quickly crossed the room and sat in his customary seat; then, feeling acutely uncomfortable and riddled with guilt for taking his frustration out on his sister, the bespectacled teen turned his face away from the classroom entirely, and instead stared uncharacteristically out the window. He kept his bangs flipped over his eyes throughout the class, and his pencil wasn't busy scratching over his paper as it usually was, answering the questions as quickly as the teacher wrote them down.

Instead, when called upon to figure out a problem, he would simply give the answer in a monotone voice, without bothering to go into detail or the process he'd used to reach his conclusion.

As the end of class drew near, Zander shifted in his seat slightly and glanced over his shoulder at Kelly, unable to help himself. He noticed that the jock looked tired, and wondered at the reason behind it; but he knew he likely wouldn't find out unless Zoey told him; which, considering how angry she was at him that morning, didn't seem likely either.

When the bell rang, the nerd waited until most of the class emptied out before daring to approach Kelly, and he said quietly so that only the jock would hear, "Zo and I had an argument this morning. She could probably use a shoulder or something at some point. Just a heads up so you don't get your head bitten off."

He kept his gaze on the ground and his face mostly averted throughout his quiet message, and as soon as he'd finished speaking, Zander tucked his head down, clutched his books to his chest, and turned to go. He had another class to be to in less than three minutes, and he was sure that Kelly wouldn't want to be seen talking to a nerd when the next math class filed in.

Kel's head lifted a bit, as more people wandered in, including their teacher. He rubbed a bit at his eyes, when he realized from the corner of his vision that Zander had slipped in without him even realizing. And already the seat beside him was filled some of the other students. Crap... looks like he lost his chance at sitting beside his girlfriend's brother that day. He'd... really wanted to, too. Maybe share a few friendly words. But nope, that wouldn't be happening today.

Class started, and he yanked out his notebook to write down some notes. All the while their professor lectured, Kelly stole glanced in Zander's direction. His brows furrowed a bit, as the normally attentive 'nerd' was seemingly zombie-esque that morning. Monotone and just dead all over, and his bangs hiding his eyes. He didn't quite know what to think of it, except he had gotten him home in the late evening. He himself was a bit tired too for that reason but---this tired?

When the class came to an end, Kel was packing up his things when he noticed Zander had actually approached him. He lifted his head to look up at the slender guy in front of him. Heh, so Zoey was in a foul mood he claimed?

"Thanks for the insider info. Hey you're... coming to the game tonight right? We're gonna kick the asses of the Northwood Eagles," he threw that out there. A simple enough invite. He got up quickly as he tugged his backpack over his shoulders. "And I promise if you keep up in the bleachers you won't be harassed..." he chuckled softly, trying to keep it casual, so of course the other guy wouldn't think he was inviting him into another 'trap' of some sort.

As they got out into the hallway, he gave Zander a wave. "See ya in 5th," he informed. Fifth period. Right. Science. Chemistry to be exact. Although Kel was a jock he certainly had some decent brain power compared to the rest of them. Maybe not as much as Zander did, but considering he was dealing with sports and doing decent in school... he had a pretty good balance going on.

When lunch rolled around, Kel went about getting his odd array of food from the cafeteria. Some sort of questionable cheese steak creation, coupled with a cup of fries and a fruit bowl to balance out the 'fast food'. And of course a bottle of Gatorade. He headed for one of the corner tables, where he and Zoey typically ate their lunch. It was near the windows, over looking the outside. Sometimes they'd go out there, usually on days with nice weather, but they always met at that table by the window first. He popped a fry into his mouth, chewing thoughtfully as he waited for his sister to arrive.

He idly wondered... where her brother ate lunch. He just hoped it wasn't in one of the bathroom stalls, like he'd seen in the movies. His stomach clenched at the idea.

Prepared to simply walk away, Zander was startled into momentary paralysis when Kelly spoke to him and thus the jock was able to walk with him for several paces. Still, the nerd couldn't bring himself to look at the blonde, so he kept his books clutched to his chest; his bangs flipped over his eyes; and his gaze on the floor in front of him.

"You're welcome" he responded quietly in answer to the thanks. And still, the jock was by his side, asking if he was going to the game that night.

Brows furrowed above his spectacles, Zander gave a quick shake of his head, then answered, "I don't usually, no. But... I suppose I could go with Zoey." Unsure if he should thank the jock for the invitation, the bespectacled teen hesitated for a moment, mulling it over. The football games were open to anyone and everyone, so it wasn't as though he needed an invitation to attend; however, the invitation itself, issued personally from Kelly, seemed to suggest that the jock actually wanted him to attend.

Before he could make a decision on whether or not to thank the blonde, Kelly was waving and heading off, and Zander murmured, "See you," to the jock's retreating back.

Just before lunch rolled around, he made a point of seeking out his sister to apologize, and was treated to a teary, if happy, hug.

"I hate it when we fight," Zo muttered, clinging tightly to her brother's neck and trying in vain not to let the tears she'd been fighting back fall down her cheeks. It had been a miserable morning for the normally peppy girl, and her relief at her twin's apology was profound. "What did I do to make you so angry with me?"

Zander shook his head and squeezed Zoey's waist gently. "Nothing, Zo," he murmured back, also glad to have the anger of the morning behind them. "I just... woke up in a weird mood, I guess, and I took it out on you. I'm really sorry for being such a butthead."

The familiar term made Zoey laugh, and she pulled away from her brother still chuckling. "Well, you wouldn't be you if you weren't a butthead sometimes," she teased.

Feigning a hurt sigh, Zander quipped, "You cut me, Zo. I am nothing if not a loving, caring sibling."

Still teasing each other gently, the twins entered the cafeteria and Zoey spotted Kelly right away. Gripping her brothers arm, she tugged him over to the table she usually shared with her boyfriend, ignoring her siblings attempts to escape.

Smiling brightly and still hanging on to Zander, the girl leaned over and kissed Kelly. "Hey!" she greeted him. "You don't mind if Zander joins us for lunch, do you?"

Feeling acutely uncomfortable with the situation, the bespectacled teen deliberately kept his gaze away from the jock, then muttered, "No! No... it's all right. I'm sure Kelly would rather be alone with you... or something. I'll only be in the way."

Finally managing to extract his arm from Zoey's grip, the teen backed away quickly, a pleading expression his face. "Seriously... just... enjoy your lunch. I... have work to do."

Without waiting for a response, Zander turned and fled; not even making an attempt to cover the fact that it was nothing more than an escape.

Shaking her head and linking her fingers with Kelly, Zo shrugged. "I think you make him nervous," she murmured quietly, her gaze on her brother's retreating back.

Kel was surprised as Zoey came into the cafeteria, not by herself, but with her brother in tow. That strong grip of hers was on his arm. The sight brought a faint bemused smile to Kelly's lips. Hah, between Zoey and himself, maybe they would get used to being more social. Maybe...

He watched as they approached the table. Zoey asked if her brother could join them. He was about to answer when Zander quickly was excusing himself. Well, more like desperately trying to escape the situation. Fight or flight taking him over. Kelly's brows furrowed as he watched the 'nerd' hurry off. Sheesh... was he really so frightening for the shorter guy?

He turned his gaze to Zoey then as she settled beside him. "... I guess." He sighed. "The other guys might not tease him so bad if he didn't act like a frightened gazelle faced with a pride of lions," he gruffed and shook his head. Confidence always made people like you... Which was why the jocks were so popular. And another reason he'd been drawn to Zoey. He lifted his head once more to look to the door of the lunch room where Zander had scurried off, then let out a heavy sigh.

Oh well... looks like things would never change.

A ways down the hall from the cafeteria, most of the students had migrated into the cafeteria for food, leaving the halls relatively empty. Though as Zander was hasty in his retreat, he soon found himself ramming into a hulking figure who'd just popped out from behind the corner. If he dared to look up, he'd see three of Kelly's jock buddies. The... not so nice ones. Tall, broad shouldered.

"Hah... well lookit what we got here. Maybe you should watch where you're going, nerd." the one he ran into sneered. As fate had it, they were right near the boy's room. One of the others gave Zander a shove, through the swinging door of the boy's room, which was empty at the moment. "Maybe we should teach ya a lesson about running into people," one of the other jocks snerked.

If Zander wracked his brain he might vaguely remember their names. Jordan, dark haired and tan skinned, was the one he'd run into. Phil was the one who'd shoved him, a dirty blond hinting more toward brunet. And Tony was the third, with black hair with frosted tips. All tall, all strong, and all pretty damn cruel. Yeah he was pretty much fucked...

So intent was he on his escape, Zander didn't even realize there was anyone else in the hallway with him until he was literally bounced backward off of a human wall.

At least, that's what it seemed like until the nerd finally raised his gaze and looked up to see the grimly smiling faces of three of his primary tormentors. He backed up quickly, palms raised in an expression of surrender, and tried to apologize to the jocks; but he quickly found himself pushed into the boy's bathroom before he could make good on his escape.

"Well, shit," he muttered quietly, knowing that there was no way out for him now. At this point, it was either fight or flight, and he knew that these muscle-bound meatheads weren't likely to allow him to get away unscathed. Thus, he prepared to fight.

He was by no means as strapping as these jerks, but he was quick and he was agile, and, unlike his attackers, he knew better than to rush in; better to wait and bide his time to see what they had planned for him.

As he'd suspected, they tried to push him into a stall, no doubt to dunk his head into the toilet and give him the much-hated swirly. Refusing to capitulate so easily, Zander fought back. He landed several blows on Jordan's face, and managed a solid kick to the tender area between Tony's thighs. Unfortunately, rather than daunt the other two, it only seemed to spur them on to greater heights of cruelty; and the nerd quickly found himself shoved up against the wall of the toilet stall by Phil, while Jordan rained vicious blows to his face and stomach.

Fortunately for Zander, someone came into the boy's bathroom, and, afraid of being caught fighting - as the three would likely be kicked off the football team in addition to being suspended - they picked up their fallen comrade and fled, leaving the bespectacled teen to clean himself up.

Wincing and holding his stomach, Zander lurched to the sink and, with a trembling hand, reached out to turn the cool water on to try and rinse away some of the blood that he could feel flowing freely from his busted lip.

Kelly had been getting settled in his seat. Though as he sat there and wiggled his fingers a bit, his brows furrowed at what felt like the dirt of the day on his palms. He spared a glance to Zo, then smiled. "I'm gonna go wash my hands. Be back in a minute," he informed, pressed a kiss to her cheek. He rose up then and headed out of the cafeteria.

He didn't really spare much mind to the fact one of the stalls was occupied. He spied the urinals nearby. He could use a piss now that he thought about it. In the midst of zipping up later, he heard the sound of guys leaving the room. He glanced over his shoulder, catching the faint glimpse of some of his friends. Quirking a brow, he gave a shrug.

Though a few minutes later, another guy was soon out of the stall. Kelly glanced over, but at the sight he found himself faced with caused his eyes to widened.

"Zander...!?" he gawked. Going to him immediately, he looked the poor smaller guy up and down. Clutching his stomach, a bleeding lip and already the faint purple scuff of bruises forming on his face. Kelly felt his chest tighten at the sight.

"... Zander... what the hell happened?" he asked as his hand gently rested on his back. Though as he recalled the glimpse he caught of his jock buddies, he felt a cold block of ice seem to spiral down his back. His brows furrowed. They must have done this.

Sure he'd seen them tease Zander in the past. But... he'd never known it to be this bad. And it must have been even odder, for Zander, to have just been beaten up by jocks and now finding one... attempting to console him.

Zander cupped his hands beneath the cool water of the running faucet and, catching some of the liquid in his palms, splashed it on his face to relieve the anger and humiliation that blazed in his chest from the knowledge that Kelly had just witnessed his beating.

When asked what had happened, the nerd couldn't help it. He cracked a sarcastic smile, gave a quick, humorless laugh, then groaned and winced when his torn lip split further at the action. At the feeling of the jock's hand resting on his back, the bespectacled teen stiffened slightly, though he didn't pull away. Instead, his gaze met Kelly's in the reflection of the mirror, his glasses doing nothing to hide the pain in his eyes.

"I'd think that was pretty obvious," he responded flatly, reaching out for a paper towel and wetting it beneath the faucet. "Your buddies were playing 'Smash the Fist Into the Nerd's Face.' And guess who got to play the nerd?"

Gingerly bringing the damp wad of paper up to his face, he gently dabbed at the cut on his lip though he winced several times as the rough towel caught on the split skin and pulled. Pressing on the cut with one hand, Zander used the other to pull his shirt up over his ribs and chest to expose the already-purple bruises that were forming in knuckle-shaped patterns over his skin.

"Damn," he hissed quietly. "That's going to be hard to hide at the meet this weekend." Shaking his head ruefully, the nerd carefully lowered his shirt to once again cover himself, then turned to face Kelly and blushed at how close they were standing. Unintentionally, his gaze drifted down to the jock's lips, and the nerd licked in his own lips in response, then jerked his gaze back up to meet the blonde's gaze and took a deliberate step back in an attempt to put some distance between their bodies. Unfortunately, Zander's hips rapped up against the sink and he found himself trapped; boxed in between a wall on one side, the sink at his back, and Kelly in front of him. While a similar scenario had occupied some of his more blatant fantasies concerning the other teen, he didn't think it was a good idea to be in such close proximity while he was still feeling so vulnerable.

Bracing his hands on the edge of the sink behind him, the nerd tried to look casual, but he feared that Kelly would be able to hear his heart galloping in his chest.

"I've... ah... got class to go to." He waited a beat, but when the jock didn't move, Zander raised one dark eyebrow and tried again. "Excuse me, please? I have class."
