Before Jin could say there was no need to get drunk and that the mangaka could drink whatever he wanted, including non-alcoholic drinks, the old agent interrupted. Again. Annoyed, but not stupid enough to show it, he leaned back in his chair and let the older man speak. He supposed he got something good out of it, because Kyoji revealed that he had never been drunk. He should not have been surprised, the man was so naive after all. What Himura said was true though, it was important to keep a good image. It was kind of interesting to see that the mangaka could relax. The moment he recalled memories of his school days a soft expression crossed his face. Jin almost chuckled at the dreamy look in Kyoji’s eyes. Unfortunately his amusement was totally crushed by the next sentence that fell from the mangaka’s lips. The familiar name almost made him cringe. Arata Naoko, much to his disdain, was his mother. Two-faced bitch. How in the world had Kyoji turned the conversation from alcohol to his mother? In order to mask his frown he grabbed his glass and took a long sip. When he put it down on the table he nodded. “Yeah, I’m surprised you noticed. I think she’ll be honoured to hear you know of her.” He had not met a lot of people that knew Naoko was his mother. “She’s my mother, I got into acting thanks to her.” It was partially true and the only bit of information he wanted to share. He did not want Kyoji to ask more questions about the woman so he made sure that the subject would be changed “But lets not talk about her!” he stated with a cheerful laugh “I’m more interested in you. You must be quite shocked by all the changes in your life.” Kay took that as a sign to involve himself in the conversation again “The real change has yet to come! When the anime will be aired you will be famous, no doubt about it!” Kay spoke the truth. Jin always though Kay was too optimistic about everything, but it was true that Kyoji would be famous. Two incredibly popular stars worked with him, it would draw attention. If that was not enough Jin had a interview scheduled for tomorrow. He would talk about his new projects, one of them being Kyoji’s anime. It was all carefully planned to gain attention and popularity. |

Kyoji wanted nothing more than to press on the subject of this mysterious Naoko, delighted to know that she was Jin's mother. This juicy piece of information would surely make his otaku friends gasp! It made sense that Jin would follow in the footsteps of his mother. Despite the fact that she had only starred in a handful of projects, her voice was one of the memorable ones. He decided to wait for later to ask Jin about her. It was weird that the man was more interested in an otaku like Kyoji. Up until now, his life had been far from noteworthy. Jin's interest was exciting, but it made Kyoji a little nervous. Telling someone so... so glamorous about how a nerdy loser he was was kind of embarassing. Just because he lacked social grace didn't mean he wasn't conscious about it. "Well, I don't think things have changed much yet. Appart from the phone calls I keep getting, and fan letters..." He chuckled nervously. "Himura-san takes care of most of those. Oh... I have to follow a schedule to draw my manga, too, but I liked doing it before all of this happened." "Right..." Himura sighed. "I only have to call you twice every day to ask you to get to work." He regretted saying this as soon as the words left his lips. Making fun of the mangaka was like kicking a puppy. Too easy, and wrong. Kyoji had to deal with his peers' criticism every day, he didn't need his own agent to add to the abuse. |

The look of regret did not go unnoticed by Jin, even though it was there for a mere second. The idol was not nice enough to help Himura without gain, but he figured they other man might accept him more if he turned the comment in a light joke. He chuckled “I know another person that can get very lazy,” he replied as he gave Kay a pointed stare. The other idol raised a cocky eyebrow “Hey, I work very hard!” he defended himself, but Jin waved the comment away as he settled his gaze on Kyoji again “You should see him in the mornings, you can’t get him out of be—“ He was cut off by Kay, who had slapped a hand on his mouth. With mirth in his eyes Jin’s own hands came up to pull the hand away and continue to inform Kyoji about Kay’s habits. It was not meant to be mean and both of the idols obviously enjoyed themselves. Jin hoped Kyoji would start to loosen up too seeing that they were acting like little kids. Such a silent and shy type was only entertaining for a couple of minutes after all. Jin was curious about Kyoji’s behaviour when the man finally decided to loosen up. Unfortunately, the flash of a camera interrupted their fun. Jin’s grip tightened slightly before he released Kay’s hand. The other idol pulled away, gaze focussed on the girl with the camera. The expression on both of the idols faces had not fallen, they were professionals and used to situations like this. The girl, who finally mustered up the courage to approach practically ran over “Can… can I take a picture with you?” she said, eyes sparkling with excitement. Jin gave her an easy smile “Of course,” he replied before he leaned closer. Kay flung an arm over his shoulder and leaned closer too. The girl looked like she was about the faint as she took the photo. After that she practically begged them for an autograph and it took a while for her to leave. When she was finally gone he turned his attention back to the other’s and grinned towards Kyoji “Just wait and see, in a month people will do that to you too.” |

"I doubt it!" Kioji chuckled softly. "Girls really don't see me, I guess. I'm not nearly as handsome as you two are. Even Himura-san probably gets more attention than I do!" He joked. Maybe it was a revenge for what his agent had said earlier, or maybe Kyoji really was starting to loosen up now... And to think that they hadn't even started drinking yet! The buisnessman was a little taken aback by his protégé's words. It wasn't often that Kyoji bit back. "Well, that's..." He stammered, not used to getting teased. He glared at the young man, feeling a bit of warmth speading across his cheeks. "That's none of your buisness, Shimizu-kun!" He realised too late that he fell right into the trap. Kyoji stuck his tongue out. "That's not very professionnal, Himura-san. I'm not THAT much younger than you are!" To his credit, Himura rallied magnificiently. Pushing his glasses back up, he took a serious expression. "Forgive me, Shimizu-san. It will not happen again." There was no trace left of his blush. "Aah, it's all right!" Kyoji laughed, then turned his attention back to Jin. The fangirl's interruption had completely derailed their conversation. As a result, Jin's joke about getting Kay out of bed, which definitely could imply something naughty had happened between the two voice actors, went completely over the mangaka's head. Not that he would've caught on in normal circumstances anyway... The man was still very much innocent. And this was an anime fan who HAD seen one or two of the more... ecchi series before. "Where were we?" He asked, trying hard to remember what they were talking about. "Ah... I mean, I'm not a very glamorous person. My life's pretty dull compared to a famous voice actor's. Unless you're impressed by someone's knowledge of all the series that came out in the last twenty years or so, I suppose." |

Kyoji’s life might not be as interesting, but Jin was used to famous people so he did not see them as something special. He was famous himself and did not look up to his collegues. Of course Stan and he had carefully selected a few that he would ‘respect’ but that was for promotional reasons. His whole world was a big lie and it was entertaining to see that people had so much respect for him. He wondered how shocked they would be if his true personality was shown. He supposed it would cause a huge uproar, but because he had the charisma and the looks everything would probably settle down and he would just be given a different imagine. Show business was such a joke. But back to the present. Jin laughed “I’m impressed! I wouldn’t even be able to name half of them and I work in the industry.” There was a ridiculous amount of series that came out each year and Jin did not even bother to remember all of them. He had Stan for that. Besides, it was not what he should focus on in order to stay as popular as he was now. Suddenly Kay rose to his knees and held his cup up “Lets toast!” the small man yelled, his voice easily reaching their whole company. It was no surprise the man was a voice actor and singer, his voice was very powerful. The other obviously liked the suggestion and within a minute drinks were ordered and passed down to everybody at the table. Most of them shuffled closer and Stan slipped down next to Jin, a drink in his hand. Although the man knew he would not come to the studio often he was just as excited as most of the others. He was very passionate about his work and he was glad to know Jin seemed to accept the mangaka. He had had his worries, but for now everything seemed to be going well. “Kyoji! Make a toast!” Kay stated and all eyes settled on the mangaka. Of course nobody expected Kyoji to give a formal speech, but for some people it was hard to think of words on the spot. Jin knew Kyoji had nothing to fear though, the people here were not out to badmouth the mangaka. |

Kyoji's eyes went wide with stage fright. He'd never been much of a public speaker, the kind of kid who got laughed at in school during oral presentations because they stuttered and stared at their feet, and who stuttered and stared at their feet because they knew they were going to get laughed at. True, school had ended a long time ago for him, but the fear was still there. He turned to Jin for help with a look that would've been at home on a deer caught in the headlights of a car, wincing in advance and bracing for the imminent impact. Please help me, I'm not good at this! The mangaka remembered all of a sudden just who he was talking with: his idol. The voice of the dark sorcerer, and of a myriad of heroes, princes, soldiers and mentors, the voice that had inspired him one of his favourite characters in the whole world. He couldn't humiliate himself in front of his idol. Kyoji straightened up and raised his glass, moment of complete and utter terror over before the rest of the table could have noticed. "To our success-to-be!" He articulated, then took a deep breath and went on. "This is a new chapter, and we'll write it together! I might've made up the story, but you're the ones who will make it live!" This seemed to do the trick, though he couldn't help but feel that it sounded a bit cheesy. Still, Kyoji was immensely relieved that it was over. |

Jin could not help but notice the desperate look the mangaka threw him. There wasn’t much he could do for the other though, this was something he needed to do himself. Besides, it was kind of amusing to see Kyoji so insecure and he almost grinned. Jin himself had never had a problem with public speaking. He had the natural charisma and grace that made people love him. Even if he screwed up or said something incredibly stupid it was easily passed of as a tease or joke. It was like a gift and he was incredible thankful for it. Suddenly Kyoji’s stance changed, drastically. He straightened and his voice was clear, stronger. It seemed the mangaka had some spirit in him after all. Jin was nicely surprised to say the least. It did not matter than it was a common cheer, the others were hyped up by it. Everybody raised their glass and cheered. Jin smiled to Kyoji, a clear sign he accepted the man. After that, the liquor started to flow. It was a nice atmosphere, but it only served to amuse Jin for a short time. It was not long before he started to get bored. His eyes wandered over the others, they all seemed to have the greatest time of their lives. He supposed he was a bit strange in a way, since he could not bring himself to enjoy these type of things like the others did. With a soft sigh, he turned his attention back to Kyoji. He could always tease the mangaka a little to pass time. So far, Kyoji had been very expressive. Maybe Jin would manage to draw out more expressions from the seemingly timid man. “So..” he drawled and an impish grin made its way to his lips. He placed his elbow on the table and leaned his chin on his hand. “Tell me something interesting about yourself.” he requested. The way he spoke was still so calm and confident, almost like a purr. It made it almost impossible to ignore his requests. Jin hoped Kyoji’s answer would be amusing, he needed something to drive away his boredom. |

Kyoji ended up asking for whatever his agent got, and was starting to regret it. He wasn't sure he liked the taste of beer after all, it was way more bitter than he expected. Oh well... for now, he was happy to watch the others drink and listen to them talk. Jin's question brought some attention back on him, and the mangaka was conscious that some of their table neighbors had quieted down to listen. "Well, there's not much to say..." He started hesitantly. "I'm pretty much a normal guy. A normal otaku, at least." He doubted Jin wanted to know all about him, like his blood group (B), his birthday (July 17th) or his favourite food (ramen). And yet, his idol seemed to take such an interest! Kyoji didn't want to disappoint the man by showing how dull he was. But what could he talk about? The girl from earlier gave him an idea. "You know what kind of guys we are. I've never had a real girlfriend, even though more and more girls are joining the otaku clubs these days." He chuckled softly. This wasn't something he minded much about, he didn't feel like he was missing out by being shunned by the female population. "I guess women like guys who're more energetic than I am. Besides, I'd rather go out with someone I really like." He admitted. It didn't even cross his mind that someone his age should be ashamed of still being a virgin. When he mentionned not getting any action, Kyoji really wasn't kidding! |

Otaku were not normal to Jin. Even though he had worked with many of them he was never able to understand their unhealthy love with anime and manga. That they had characters that they were in love with was probably one of the weirdest things. How could one love a fictional thing? Jin had always been popular and surrounded by others so he could not relate to loners that fled from reality through manga. Luckily, Kyoji seemed more taken with him than a fictional character. Admiring a real human was still better than admiring a drawing. The revelation that Kyoji never had a girlfriend did not surprise Jin. It fit his image and Jin would not be surprised if Kyoji was a virgin. Jin, in turn, had never had any trouble with getting girls. He had been gifted with his looks, it did not really matter how he acted, girls would still love him. “You’re really innocent, aren’t you?” he teased good-naturedly. Then he leaned back and took a sip from his drink. Even though finding out more about the mangaka was unexpectedly interesting Jin did not plan to stay for much longer. He had a busy schedule and Stan would not let him live it down if he would stay here for much longer. Not that he really cared about Stan’s worries, but he knew it was the best thing to do. After a minute or so, Kay involved him in some pointless conversation about robots, but he easily chatted along. It was not long before Stan motioned for it was time to go though. He nodded and for once he listened to the manager. “Sadly, I’ll have to get going.” He rose from his seat and ruffled Ray’s hair, a gentle show of affection. Then he turned his attention to Kyoji “I look forward to working with you tomorrow.” Without a pause he looked to the others and saluted them “Goodbye, have fun!” After people had returned his goodbye he and Stan left. Jin briefly closed his eyes and sighed, almost tired. Then they stepped outside and were greeted with light flashes and quick questions. It seemed to reporters had still managed to find out where they went. How bothersome. He did not answer any of their questions, simply smiled and greeted them until he was finally in the car. |

Even though Kyoji got deeply involved in the robot discussion with Kay, Jin's words played back in his mind. You're really innocent, aren't you? It sounded... not quite like a compliment, but not an accusation either. It was true, too. Yeah, Kyoji had seen his fair share of hentai (admittedly mostly for the plot rather than for the gratuitious tentacle raping of large-breasted girls), but his innocence had gone through this mostly untouched. You just couldn't imagine Kyoji as one of those perverted otakus who obsessed about girls made of paper and ink, it just didn't stick. Even after his idol left and his agent hinted that Kyoji should also go to bed early, Jin's words kept echoing in his thoughts. In fact, they did right up until he managed to go to sleep that night. Alone. On an old futon that once belonged to a cousin of his who left home to get married. Kyoji chuckled softly and turned around on his side. "Yeah... I guess I'm a little bit pathetic and lonely." He whispered to himself. "Maybe I should get a cat." |

“We heard you have accepted an offer to be the voice actor for one of the characters from this manga. Could you tell us more about it?” Jip tipped his head to the side and watched the interviewer with a calculating but amused expression. He seemed to think for a long moment, even though he already knew what to say. This interview was one of the first television shows that featured Kyoji’s manga. The interviewer had introduced the manga and given a quick explanation. Now it was Jin’s time to express his joy over being able to work together with Kyoji. “I guess I can share a few things..” He leaned back and crossed a leg over the other “When I read the first chapters of the manga I thought it was a great story. I did not think they would ask me, but when they did I immediately accepted.” He paused for a moment. “I feel very lucky to be able to work with Kyoji. We already decided who I will voice for and it is one of the main characters, so you will hear my voice a lot.” He winked to the camera “I look forward to it and I hope the viewers will like it as much as I do.” The rest of the interview he continued to praise Kyoji’s manga and even revealed by ‘accident’ that he was glad to work together with Kay. The interview was a big success. Stan was happy, the company was happy and Jin was sure the viewers would also be happy. With a sandwich dangling from his mouth, a cup of coffee in his left hand and a stack of papers in his right, Jin arrived at the recording studio. He managed to open the door to the studio with his elbow and entered the room. Nobody was there yet. Which was not surprising. He was an hour early and because nobody had arrived yet, he figured now was a good time to eat his lunch. He had had the choice to lunch with that cute new idol, if he recalled correctly her name was Aiko, but had politely refused her offer. He wanted to read his script one more time before they would start recording. He closed the door with a bump of his hip and sauntered towards the couch. There, he dropped the stack of papers on the table and placed his coffee down. Then he finally took a bite from his sandwich. With a content sigh, he allowed himself to relax. It was nice to have a moment of silence. After he had finished his sandwich he started to wonder who would be the first to arrive. He would not be surprised if that turned out to be Kyoji. The man seemed like the time of person that always arrived early because he did not want anybody to wait for him. Jin could practically picture Kyoji stumble through the door, as nervous and fidgety as he had been the day before. Unconsciously, his lips curled up in a grin. |

Jin's guess was right on, but not by much. Kyoji had planned to get there early, eager to get to work with his new friends (...could he call them friends yet? He hoped so!), but getting to the studio got a lot more complicated than he thought. It was as if life had suddenly remembered that people like Kyoji were not made to be lucky. His first bad luck of the day was the most painful, physically, but not the worse. Rushing out the front door, he was so distracted that he didn't notice someone had left a bag of trash on the stairs. His subsequent tumble left him covered with scratches and bruises, dazed and feeling a little sick. When he finally got up, it was only to realise that one of his bicycle tyres was deflated. Well, no need to panic, he could still take the sub. Provided that said sub wasn't down due to a mechanical problem. In the end, Kyoji managed to beg a car ride out of his agent. Himura was not happy at all to do this, and though he refrained from saying anything in the car, this was one of the most... tense rides Kyoji had gone through. Still limping a little and out of breath, Kyoji burst into the studio, only to realise that Jin was the only other one there yet. As happy as he was about the prospect of spending a little bit of time alone with his idol, the mangaka still felt embarassed that he'd hurried so much for nothing. "Good morning, Jin-san!" He said as he let himself fall in a nearby chair. "No one else is there yet?" |

[aww, poor Kyoji xD] True to prediction, Kyoji was the first to arrive. The mangaka stumbled in, looking very dishevelled and out of breath. Jin looked up from his papers and stared at the man for a long moment. He needed a moment to process the fact it looked like the man had slept in a dumb. Kyoji was covered in little scratches and a couple of bruises were painfully noticeable. Yeah, that did not look nice. “..Morning,” he greeted back as his gaze drifted down to take in the rest of Kyoji’s body “I’m the only one here.” He looked up so he could look into Kyoji’s eyes and then he cocked his head to the side as he raised a curious eyebrow. “What happened to you? You look like you just got mugged.” He leaned further back against the couch and crossed his legs, it created the effect as if he had just made the simple piece of furniture his throne. He certainly looked like he owned the room, but that was just because of the confidence that radiated from him. Sometimes, it was dangerously close to arrogance. After a minute or so, Jin felt obligated to feign more concern so pointed to his cheek “You have an ugly scratch there.” Then he leaned forward and placed an arm on his knee. He reached out with his other hand and tentatively brushed his fingertips just below the scratch. He inspected the skin with surprising gentleness before he gave the side of Kyoji’s head a soft and playful tap. “That should be cleaned.” |

A man prouder or less honest than Kyoji would have pounced on Jin's easily-provided excuse to get some sympathy, but the mangaka didn't even think to attempt pretending. He hung his head low in shame. "It's nothing like that... I just tripped and fell. Heh." He didn't know how bad it looked, but it did hurt. "I'm sure it looks worst than it feels." He chuckled awkwardly. "So, no need to get all concerned about it, Jin-sama. No need at-" He stopped when he noticed how close to him his idol had leaned, and froze completely when he felt the man's finger pressing against his cheek. For a basement-dwelling geek, Kyoji managed to have pretty decent skin. Not at all the dermatologist's nightmare you'd expect from an otaku, though not perfectly flawless porcelain skin either. Well, even pop idols didn't have perfect skin, they tended to hide everything with makeup, while Kyoji didn't have a reason to do this. It wasn't as if people would be looking at him up close. Um. Up until now, at least. He could still feel the gentle pressure against his skin, even though Jin wasn't touching anymore. His cheek felt hot. "I-I'll, uh, I'll do that r-right away!" He stuttered, clumsily getting back up and nearly falling over again when his foot got caught in a wire. |
