Fame had come to Kyoji like a snowstorm in summer: not just unexpected, but downright impossible. After spending nearly ten years trying to sell his idea to an editor, not only was his manga getting published, they were adapting it to anime! He actually had FANS! The series wasn't even done yet, and they were translating it in different languages: english, korean, french... Everything was going so fast. He had finished the fourth chapter on a cliffhanger, and announced that he'd be taking a short rest before starting on chapter five. Well, he had to! Shimizu Kyoji, soon-to-be world famous mangaka, needed some time to think, and to get used to what was happening around him. Kyoji wasn't a very big man. More on the short side of the otaku kind, he had unruly hair and thick glasses, wore videogame tee-shirts and, up until fame had dropped on his head, worked for his uncle's video store and drew manga in his spare time. Girls wouldn't have given him a second glance. They could just guess that his room would be filled with videogames, anime posters and action figures (it really was!). And now... well, his agent had told him to dress a bit more smartly. He did as he was instructed to, too overwhelmed to resist anyway. Suits made him look less like a buisnessman than like a teenager going on his first date and trying as hard as he could to impress the girl. Kyoji was nervous. Among the other passengers on the bus, this morning, he was just another generic face. Just a normal awkward guy in his mid-twenties. Now, though, he stood in front of the recording studio as a star. A star who was about to see his very own characters come to life. They were doing the casting for voice actors, and Kyoji had insisted on having the final word on who would play who. He could barely hide his excitement as he made his way to studio 12, where the future voices of his creations were waiting for him. A few very big names would be there... |

“It’s a good manga, isn’t it?” “I hate it.” The man next to him raised a surprised eyebrow, but Jin did not bother to explain what made him repel the manga. Carelessly, he tossed it to the back of the car as if it was nothing more than trash. To him it was just that. The plot was monotone, the characters undeveloped and the art was nowhere near anything that Jin saw as beautiful. “I don’t see why it is so important for me to work on this project,” Jin said, and if it had been anyone else Stan would have said they had to quit whining. Jin was different though, because the man did not whine. He complained. Stan let out a defeated sigh, it was hard to be the manager of Arata Jin. At first he had been ecstatic to know that he would be the man’s manager. Jin was a man of extraordinary beauty and the man was incredibly charismatic. He had yet to meet someone that was not impressed by the man’s gracious form, soft brown hair and auburn eyes. It had not been long before he found out that Jin’s easy attitude was a façade. Jin was no angel, the man was a demon, manipulating, intelligent and addictive. Once he had gotten close to Jin he could not bring himself to leave. “Because it will be good for your image. It is said that this manga will be a huge success. I know that the story isn’t very original, but I'm sure the crowd will love it. Please Jin, just give it a try.” He got a scoff from the other man and the rest of the ride neither of them said a thing. It was only when they had gotten out of the car and walked through the hallways of the recording studio the silence was broken. “That is the mangaka,” Stan said as he pointed at a man at the other side of the hall. Jin’s eyes settled on the figure and he was silent for a few moments. Then the corners of his lips curled up in an amused smirk. “Him?” “Yes, is something wrong with him?” “No, it’s just that I suddenly understand why the manga has such a childish plot.” “Why is that?” “.. He looks like a kid dressed up in his father’s suit.” “Please Jin, try to be nice. He’s new to this.” “Fine, whatever.” Jin sighed as Stan quickened his pace “Mister Kyoji!” the man called out before he smiled to Kyoji. “It is very nice to meet you. I am Stan Wyre, the manager of Arata Jin.” Stan smiled to Kyoji before he looked back to Jin. It was Jin’s time to act. A warm smile spread on his lips as Jin stepped forward and extended his hand “Hello, I am Jin. It is a pleasure to meet you.” |

Kyoji immediately recognized the voice, though he'd never seen the man's face in his life. This had been the voice of countless heroes through his teen years, including some of his favourites of all times. He bowed respectfully, barely able to keep his emotions under control. Arata Jin! The man who had voiced the black prince from Dragon Knight Lulu! "I'm honored that you want to be the voice for my character, Arata-sama!" He said, his voice barely more than a whisper. "It's the greatest honor for me to meet someone as talented as you!" One might've mistaken his devotion as an attempt to suck up to someone with such a well-known name in the anime subculture, but Kyoji truly was in awe, as if he was meeting an emperor. Well... Arata-sama had voiced an emperor once, so there were some similarities. Besides, he was something to look at, no mistake. Not that Kyoji would've cared if the man had been uglier than sin itself. Hero-worshipping could really make someone blind. |

Stan and Jin exchanged a look when the author bowed and started to babble about how honoured he was. It was a common thing for people to respect him, but authors usually held more.. modesty.. Well, whatever. Jin laughed easily “I’m glad to know you think so highly of me,” he responded. Part of it was true. He enjoyed the fact people thought so highly of him, but that was mostly because that meant he could use them. “Please don’t be so formal. Call me Jin,” he requested as he moved a hand to scratch the back of his neck, seemingly embarrassed. In his mind his thoughts were already somewhere else. If there were no sudden changes he was pretty sure he would get the job. The author was a big fan of him, auditioning would be easy. “ I hope we can work together on this project,” he said as Stan opened the door to their studio. Jin gestured Kyoji to enter the room before him “I was very impressed by your manga. I couldn’t stop reading it,” he admitted, or rather, lied. It was sweet talking, but Jin could play it off. They were greeted by the producer and a few other voice actors. Jin knew two of them well, they had worked together on different projects. They greeted each other with smiles as they let Kyoji and the producer prepare for the auditioning. |

Kyoji hadn't expected to get on a first-name basis with his idol, not in a lifetime. Well, maybe the man was always like this? It was a little strange, but kind of cool at the same time. And Jin was complimenting his work, too! This felt a little unreal, but the past few months had all felt like a dream anyway. Kyoji needed all the self-control he had not to grin like an idiot. "I'm glad that you enjoyed it, Jin-sama. It's not done yet, of course, but I hope that seeing the anime being made will inspire me for the next chapter." Arata Jin wasn't the only superstar he'd be meeting today. He met the other voice actors with the same enthusiasm, but Jin was his favourite of all times for male voices. The way he just seemed to know how a character felt and conveyed it with perfection... He had selected a few lines from every character for the tryouts, along with instructions on what the mood would be like. Of course, Kyoji was pretty certain that his idol would get an important role. Not the main character, no, that wouldn't do, Rune needed a more innocent voice, but there was a role that would be perfect. The mysterious dark magician, Athemy. The one everyone thought would be the main villain. Kyoji had never heard Jin voice a villainous character before, and he was thrilled. |

Jin did not have to wait for long before he could start and he was sure he would do a good job. Even though Jin did not like the manga, he was serious about his work. He would never have gotten this far if he had laughed certain roles off, so he had studied Athemy’s personality and figured out the way he had to speak. Judging by the fact Kyoji was new the man would certainly like it and he figured the producer would feel the same. He gave Kyoji and the producer a playful wink before he focussed on the job at hand. “Do not worry about Rune. He is merely an ant. He will not trouble us in the future.” The words flowed out as if he had never been anyone else than Athemy. His voice was mysterious and dark, it had the slightest hint of a seductive undertone in it that would captivate anyone who listened to it. The rest of his lines were spoken with the same easy and when he finished he smiled to Kyoji, eyes lingering on the man for a tad too long before he stepped away from the microphone and settled down on the couch. Kay, one of the other voice actors, leaned towards him “Again, you stun me with your talent,” the man whispered and a smile curled on Jin’s lips. It was nice to know others respected him for what he did. Now he just had to wait until the others were finished. He did not know who would voice Rune, but Kay was definitely one of his favourites. Hell, the man even looked all innocent and cute, it almost made one doubt if Kay really was a man. More important than that was that he had had a few project with Kay before. They knew when to say things and understood each other when it came to their work. |

Kyoji knew he had to keep his fanboying down, but as he listened to Jin in the soundproof room next to the studio, he couldn't quite stop a happy squee from hescaping his lips. This was the PERFECT voice actor for Athemy, a manipulative, arrogant wizard. Not that Jin was as manipulative! Well, as far as he knew. The artist also approved of the actor they'd found to play Rune. Passion was the keyword here. He was a bit naive as a character, and admired Athemy despite everyone warning him that the dark wizard was not as friendly as he thought. Kyoji would have been surprised to know that some of his fangirls had already written fics where the two characters were lovers. As Jin came out of the recording studio, Kyoji was waiting for him, sparkles lighting his chocolate brown eyes up. "That was wonderful, J-Jin-sama! As if my character was standing in the room! It's like he was made for your voice." Which... well, okay, he had created Athemy with Jin's voice in mind, but that hadn't been obvious to him until he had seen the man in action. "I don't believe anyone but you could understand my character this well." |

Surprise, surprise; he had gotten the role. What did surprise him was when he came out of the recording studio it was not Stan that greeted him, but Kyoji. The man looked absolutely stunned by his performance and he almost smirked. It was kind of cute. Something disturbed him though. The light in the man’s eyes was so bright he almost wanted to check if there was light falling into them. How else could someone have such lively eyes? To cover up that it had taken him by surprise he moved a hand to mess up Kyoji’s hair in a friendly way “Didn’t I tell you, Jin is fine,” he said before he drew his hand back from the soft locks. Then he smiled “Thank you, I’m glad you liked me so much,” he said “I look forward to working with you.” It was partially true. He did look forward to seeing the man more, but that had nothing to do with work. Kyoji looked so exited about him, it was almost like he screamed to be corrupted. At the thought something dark flashed in the depths of Jin’s eyes, but he was sure nobody expect for Stan would be able to catch the ominous glint. The dangerous look was gone within a second and he was all smiles again. “How about we go out for a drink to celebrate this?” he suggested. Immediately Kay was by his side, an arm wrapped around his waist. Jin could not help but chuckle as he draped an arm over his colleague’s shoulders. The shorter man loved such gatherings so he was sure at least one of the members of the cast would join. True to prediction, Kay beamed up at him “That sounds like a lovely plan. I’m in.” Well, drinking with Kay was never boring, but at the moment he was more interested in Kyoji. Who would not be interested in someone that had yet to be corrupted by popularity. The man had great respect for him and Jin knew this was the best time to take actions, the man was still vulnerable because he did not know the world of famous mangaka yet. |

All coherent thoughts were melting in the mangaka's head. His idol was being friendly! He had touched his hair! No one ever messed up Kyoji's hair, it was usually already a mess to begin with anyway, and the friends he had were the nervous, geeky kind that wasn't too big on familiar gestures and physical contact! WOW! He forced himself to get back down to earth for a minute. "Oh... drink? In a bar?" The question had taken him unprepared. No one had ever invited him to get a drink, either. He wasn't sure about this... what if he got drunk and humiliated himself in front of Jin-sama? Would the man tease him endlessly about it, or even worse, would he treat him like a fool? Then Kay-sama got involved and there was no way Kyoji could say no anymore. "I'm honored to be invited!" He said shyly. "I'll join you in front of the door, there are some things I have to take care of first." He actually liked Kay-sama a lot, from the few minutes of contact he'd had with the man. Sure, he didn't have the same regal aura that surrounded Jin-sama, but Kay-sama was cute and friendly, exactly the kind of guy everyone liked. Kyoji left the voice actors there and ran back to his agent to finalize the voice acting contracts, but most of the work was already done. Himura-san was such a hard worker, Kyoji had no doubts that his success was almost entirely due to the older man's coaching. Himura-san watched his young protégé fetch his coat, red-faced and a little out of breath. He stopped Kyoji before he could run off again. "Where are you going, Shimizu-san? You know I can drop you off at home." The mangaka shook his head. "I was invited to... have a drink, with Jin-sama and Kay-sama. To celebrate." Himura-san looked thoughtful for a moment, then let go of him. "I'll come with you. It sounds fun." What the man didn't say was that he wouldn't trust Kyoji to go off alone to drink with a pair of strangers. Naive little Kyoji didn't have much experience in the real world. |

Both of the idols were silent as Kyoji progressed the request. The smallest of smirks made it to Jin’s lips as he watched the man in front of him. At first glance he had thought Kyoji was nothing more than a bug, but he guessed Kyoji could be entertaining. It was certainly funny to see how thrilled the mangaka was. “What a cutie,” Kay commented jokingly when Kyoji ran away the settle whatever business he had left. Jin chuckled and removed his arm from Kay’s shoulders. Kay shot him a look as he sauntered over towards Stan. The smaller idol followed Jin within a second “Why the laugh?” the small man asked and Jin gave him a glance over his shoulder “It sounds sarcastic coming from you,” he replied before he turned to Stan. He told the man their plans and of course he wanted to join too. The producer and the rest of the staff were all too eager to join too. Not only would it be a nice evening, they would get to know each other too. Of course Jin had suggested the whole thing because of the last reason. He was a genius in mind games and blackmail and therefore he wanted to get to know the people he had not met before as soon as possible. It would be easier for him to manipulate them if he knew them a little better. “I’ll go get the car,” Stan said. Jin gave a small nod before the tall man turned around and faced Kay. He nodded towards the elevator, indicating that they could leave. Kay walked after him, but stopped before the elevator. “Won’t it be better if we tell Kyo where to go?” as expected, Kay had already given Kyoji a nickname. Jin wondered how Kyoji would react to it. Would he faint because one of his idols addressed him like they were good friends? He almost chuckled, he wanted to see Kyoji’s reaction. “I’ll let him know,” Jin said before he turned around and went to the room Kyoji and his agent were in. He knocked once, but did not bother to wait for a reply. He opened the door and poked his head inside, a charming smile playing on his lips “We are going to the bar, it’s called Little Tokyo. Most of the guys are already on their way so if you don’t know where it is you should hurry.” Then he paused for a moment, smart eyes settled on both of the figures. A second passed before his smiled brightened “If you want you can join me in my car, the backseats are still empty.” [I am so original when it comes to cafe names. Not. xD ] |

Himura replied before Kyoji had a chance to react. "I can drive Shimizu-san there, I know where it is. Thank you for the offer." Was there just a little hint of a warning in the agent's voice? Himura was a bit more world-savvy than his protégé, after all. Kyoji's enthusiasm died down a little as he realised that just about everyone was coming. Maybe Jin was inviting him only to be polite, that would be more on par with the mangaka's usual luck in relationships. Still... it was better to go with all these people than to stay at home with nothing to do all day. Oh, he could always help his uncle in the store, but even though he adored movies, dealing with customers was not one of his best abilities. Himura must have noticed the young man's expression and moved to pat him on the back. "Don't get too nervous about this. You did well today, and if you keep it up, I'm sure your project will succeed beyond anything you've ever dreamed." "It already has, Himura-San..." Kyoji chuckled nervously. "But you know I'm not... well... too good with alcohol." The man nodded and led Kyoji down to his car, a sleek black sedan that, although not new, was very well cared for. "I will watch your back." |

Although Jin detected the faint edge in the man’s voice he did not think much of it. He had not done anything wrong after all, he had just suggested that everybody would celebrate the start of a new anime. That could hardly be called suspicious. It was true he would corrupt Kyoji if he got the chance, but he had enough people that worshipped the ground he walked on. He was in no hurry. “I’ll see you two there then,” Jin replied with a cheerful smile before he turned around and left. When he stepped in the car the smile faded and a blank look came to his face. He was obviously bored and had been bored most of the time he had been in the studio. Of course nobody had noticed, he was a master when it came to acting after all. As Stan started the engine and the sped off, Jin’s eyes fluttered shut and for a few minutes there was blessed silence. Unlike him, Stan did not enjoy to lack of conversation. The man continued to sneak quick glances to him until the man could no longer keep his curiosity to himself. “So what do you think?” he asked, his eyes settled on the road again. At first, it seemed as if Jin would not answer. Then a slow smirk spread across his lips and he gave his manager an amused look, his eyes still half-lidded. “About what?” Stan considered himself lucky that he had to watch to road, or else he would have lost himself in those piercing eyes. He took in a breath “About everything.” Jin was silent for a moment as he considered how he would answer that question. His opinion about the manga had not changed. He thought the mangaka was too naïve and could easily be corrupted, but a cute little thing nonetheless. He was glad Kai worked with him, because the man had the ability to keep things interesting. “I think it’ll be entertaining.” He finally responded before silence settled in again. They arrived at the bar and luckily they could enter through the back entrance. Stars that were as famous as Jin and Kai would surely be recognized and it seemed Kai had not wanted that and had taken precautionary measures. Smart. Jin could come to the table without any fan attacking him. Kai waved at him to come sit next to him and he gave Kai a wink before he sat down beside the other idol. Stan, always one to strengthen his connections, wandered off to talk to the producer. Jin leaned back in his chair, now they just had to wait for the mangaka, so they could toast to the beginning of the series. Truth to be told, he wanted the mangaka to come because he wanted to know more about the man. After all, it was not often that he worked with someone as naïve as Kyoji. |

Himura-san's car came in not very long after Jin got there, though both of its passengers were thankfully generic-looking and a lot less well-known than the voice actor, so they could go through the front door without being bothered. Well... appart from Kyoji looking young enough to get some glares from the bartender. Yeah, he was legal, but the mangaka had the distinct feeling that he would have to show his I.D. well into his forties. That was one of the reasons why he never went to bars. Kyoji quickly made his way to Jin's table, but hesitated just as he got there. Should he sit next to his idol? Ooh, he would love to, but he really didn't want to bore the man by talking his ear off, that would make a terrible impression. "Do you come here often?" He asked Jin, still standing next to the table and feeling like a bit of an idiot. "Um, I'm sorry if that sounded kind of awkward. I'm not much of a bar-person. Is there anything you think I should ask for?" Himura, who had been quiet during the car ride (Kyoji ranted and fan-boyed about Jin during the whole trip but he was used to the young man's peculiar ways by now) stepped in to help. "You should pace youself, Shimizu-san. We can start drinking once the producers and the rest of the crew gets here, if you want." He pulled the chair right across Jin's, indicating that Kyoji should sit there. This way, he could be close enough to speak with his idol, but not to touch him. Grateful, Kyoji let himself fall in the chair. Himura-san really thought of everything, even if the man sometimes slipped and called him "Shimizu-kun". Well, he didn't mind too much. Next to him, Himura-san looked so mature. Jin looked very mature as well, but in a completely different way. He was so cool! He moved as if the whole world belonged to him, completely at-ease in every situation. Kyoji still felt out-of-place in his own neighborhood! In a place like Little Tokyo, he was like... like an alien. It was pretty obvious that he didn't belong there. |

Jin’s eyes lifted up when he heard Kyoji’s voice and he gave the mangaka a charming smile. The man looked very unsure of what to do. Jin supposed he should help the poor man before he would make a total fool of himself, but the mangaka’s agent -Himura, if Jin remembered correctly- was there before he could react. What a pain. Jin did not know why, but he got the feeling that the older man did not want them to interact. As if to prove that suspicion, the man placed Kyoji down across from him. He observed the man for a long moment, his gaze cold. He shook the thought off and settled his gaze on Kyoji again. “I come here sometimes, it’s a nice place,” he said before he nodded towards Kay “This little guy loves it here, he drags me along whenever he feels like it.” Luckily Kay was currently absorbed in a conversation with one of the other voice so the man did not mingle in their conversation. Jin wanted to have a one-on-one talk with the mangaka, he wanted to know the man better. He supposed he should play the good guy for a while longer. He did not know Kyoji yet and that annoying agent seemed to be suspicious of him. Of course his irritation could not be read from his face. As always, he had an easy smile and his whole posture oozed a relaxed confidence. “Since you aren’t much of a bar-person I shall enlighten you with some tips,” he stated teasingly. Then he leaned forward and placed his elbow on the table, warm auburn eyes settled on the mangaka. With a curl of his finger he indicated Kyoji to lean closer too. “First tip,” he whispered, so that Kyoji was practically forced to lean closer to him to hear it. It was a sneaky little trick. He highly doubted the mangaka would not lean closer, he wouldn’t want to ignore his idol after all. “Relax. We’re here because we want to have a good time and relax.” He paused then, because he had drawn Kay’s attention too. The smaller idol leaned against his shoulder, a curious look on his face. Jin averted his eyes from Kyoji to watch Kay for a moment. “I don’t think you need any lessons,” he said with a wink and Kay grinned. Then Jin turned his attention back to Kyoji “Second tip. You pick what you like. I don’t know your taste so I can’t order you a drink.” Then Kay interrupted him “Third tip,” the man said cheerfully “If you get drunk, make sure the media doesn’t get to know.” Jin gave the man a playful whack on the back of his neck before he scoffed at him, though it was obvious he was amused. “Care to explain me how that is a good tip for someone that tries to relax?” |

Kyoji, as expected, leaned closer, though he couldn't understand why Jin wanted to speak so softly in a noisy place like a bar. It wasn't as loud as he'd expected, possibly because it wasn't that late yet, but he had trouble hearing Jin unless he was a lot closer anyway. "I will try to relax... but I don't think I'll be getting drunk anyway." He said, smiling weakly at Kay's intervention. "Well, it's not like the media would realise who I am anyway." Himura, whose job it was to take care of Kyoji's image, pounced on this. "You never know, Shimizu-san. Even if they don't know your face now, soon your name will be important enough to recognize. You don't want to set the wrong example, especially since your show is aimed at teenagers." Kyoji chuckled softly. "Like teenagers never get drunk! Well..." He bit his lower lip, thoughtful. "I didn't... but most of my friends did. I know the otaku club back in highschool devised a drinking game for when they watched any show by Michiru Yuriko-sama! Her "Love School" series was hillarious." The memories visibly helped Kyoji's nerves. Lost in thoughts, he remembered his old days with the other otakus, back in school. Come to think of it, that was when he had started writing his own story. Oh, he was okay at drawing even back then, but his scenario had needed serious work. "Oh... that reminds me!" The mangaka said, straightening up. "I meant to ask you, Jin-sama. The credits in Love School mentionned someone named Arata Naoko, who voiced the teacher. Was she related to you?" |
