Well, that was true. They've been together less than a week, and the usually patient Isaac was not like himself at all. But unlike most relationships, this one kind of...had a deadline. Or, maybe he didn't have to break up with Pearce afterwards, but he had to get to him before the month was over--Isaac almost friend his brain. What the--did he just think that he didn't have to break up after a month? But of course he did, if he ended up dragging this charade to longterm, he didn't know how he could stand it.

Didn't know how Rei could stand it, either.

But Isaac knew not to push his luck, he might have gotten too lucky as far as that was concerned already. Maybe that meant that Rei liked him. He didn't know.

"I don't know, I just like to know things, I'm beginning to run out of countries, though." It was a half joke. But true, he only had France and Austria and Germany left. "I mean, I just--"

His phone buzzed. Maybe that was a good thing, he didn't know the number. He glanced apologetically over at Rei. The phone call had come at a good time, it'd help them cool off.

"Hello?"

Bradley's voice said, "You are a tres horrible ex-boyfriend, just letting you know."

Isaac tensed up, but he was not going to just bolt out of the room. "How the fuck did you get this number?"

Rei didn't remove his hold, continuing to hug the man from behind as he nestled his cheek into the soft comforting shirt that covered the mans back. Rei was beginning to wonder just what in the world was going on in the mans head and why he seemed so desperate to make this work when the phone rang.

He didn't know if it was a safety for himself or Isaac.

But even as the man spoke he didn't let go. Which was why he noticed the body he was holding tense up under his touch immediately. He couldn't hear who was talking but he assumed that it wasn't anyone the man liked.

Isaac was not a man to swear. He also wasn't a man to get angry easily. Or at least, that was how Rei had known him.

So he stayed silent, loosening his grip a bit but by no means separating. He wanted to lean over and listen, or at least ask but he'd save the man his few bits of privacy. Even if the butterflies in his stomach turned painful.

“I know people, and you know people,” Bradley sounded oh, so rightfully smug, “And sometimes, what do you know, we know the same bloody people. Seriously, you’re more shallow than I remember. It’s a shame, New York is a terrible city.”

And not for the first time, Isaac wanted to punch him. As he couldn’t over the phone, he had to settle for that fact that Rei was holding him from behind without Isaac ever asking, and it was kind of nice. Sadly, he wasn’t exactly in a state of mind to enjoy the attention. Then, Isaac almost slapped himself, because of course Bradley never took ‘no’ for an answer he thought he deserved a yes to. It was a bit pathetic.

“I’m going to go now,” he said, his voice mostly even. He didn’t want to say Bradley’s name aloud--that’d probably open another can of warms he did not want to deal with. Ever. Why the fuck was he still even here? Shouldn’t he be on a plane back to London just about now? “And if you really did know what was good for you, you really wouldn’t call me.”

“And why not? You’re probably holed up with some sleazy New Yorker, I figure, I’d be a good distraction.”

Eh...Rei Pearce, Conductor of the NY Phil was definitely not some sleazy New Yorker, but he suddenly did not want to tell Bradley who he was dating. “I don’t hole up with sleazy New Yorkers, unlike you, sometimes I have standards.” He hung up.

Isaac didn’t know that a phone could exhaust him like that, but this one did. Bradley always exhausted him, he tilted his head and let it drop on Rei’s shoulder and simply looked at him. Would he ask? Or maybe the question was...was Isaac ready to answer?

Isaac looked worse and worse, or at least, he felt worse. Rei could feel the muscles tense with apprehension, the voice trying to stay calm but sounding much tighter than Isaac probably meant it to be.

It did however sound like an ex of sorts. He couldn't help but wonder why sleazy New Yorkers were brought up and from what he heard on Isaac's end, it must have been the caller. The man never got a chance to fight back as the phone call ended, leaving the room in complete silence.

He felt the head drop on his shoulder, the black strands tickling his exposed collarbone. The eyes looked at him, wondering just what he would do.

Rei was curious. So incredibly curious but he was by no means a child. "Skeleton in the closet?" He asked, remembering one of their earlier conversations on secrets.

No matter how curious they were, it had by no means been long enough to share everything. "You can tell me if you want a pair of ears but if you don't, don't worry about," Rei spoke into the mans back, letting go slightly as he smiled at the man.

How silly and strange, how things had changed between them.

Isaac wasn’t...really. He was just exhausted, Bradley St. Ryan annoyed him to the point of exhaustion, and he obviously needed to be in a country that was two oceans away from England. Perhaps the two of them gave too quickly, as far as Isaac knew, he’d gone into the whole thing with his eyes closed. Or maybe Isaac gave and Bradley didn’t and that was why he was so fucking jaded about the whole thing. This...whatever this thing was with Rei Pearce right now it was...well, to say he didn’t enjoy it was a lie, but he had his own worries like Pearce for other reasons entirely regarding this whole charade.

He put his phone on the counter and smiled a faintly ironic smile. “He makes me tired. It’s more like a vampire skeleton wearing a clown costume.” But if Rei wasn’t going to push it, Isaac wasn’t going to tell him, either. After all, if he told him about Bradley, he’d have to tell him about the others, too. About Charlotte, Peter, Vivian, Andy, and finally, Bradley. And what would that prove? That Isaac Langley didn’t do long term, ever. And he was good at running.

Although Isaac supposed that once the month was up, none of that would matter. He just couldn’t remember the last time that an ex-boyfriend had made him so...tired, miserable, maybe. But Isaac wasn’t miserable. And After Rei Pearce was over and done with, he was going to hide out in Vienna with some guy named Johann and everything was going to be lovely until that expired too.

And somehow, the option of letting him wait made the back of Isaac’s eyes burn. He had no idea what that meant. So he tried not to think about it and turned to kiss Rei instead, the kiss was just faint and fleeting, and it was gratitude rather than something sexual. “Maybe later, then. Merci, though. I mean it.” It was important to punctuate that, he thought.

A vampire skeleton wearing a clown costume. Rei's lip quirked, as he remembered a certain show he received no attention viewing a few nights ago. "Sounds like Broadway," he joked, not understanding just how close the target he really was. He was oblivious to the reasons why Isaac was so bothered but he also didn't know that he couldn't be told. The foundation of their whole relation basically stated and gave way that he could never know. Even after the bet was over, Rei could never, ever know.

He never got an answer, just the feeling of lips kissing him. But it was different. There was no sexual energy, no need or want for more. Just a thank you...and perhaps the tiniest bit of desperation. "Maybe later. One day," he spoke, echoing the two words that seemed to be a silent agreement of what would never come.

But then Rei grew very confused very fast. "Mercy? Why in the world would you ask me for mercy? I haven't done anything." Isaac sure had a strange way of pronouncing mercy though. Strange, strange man.

"You need to go back to be. I'll even come with you for a few minutes," he spoke, remembering how uncomfortable and upset the man had been before. This he character, who he had yet to discover or realize. Strangely enough, Rei immediately placed that singing Bradley into his mind. It was easier to dislike a face.

Right, Isaac forgot, Rei didn’t have the ear for language. Which was strange because he had such an ear for music. It was funny really, all of his partners before Rei had grasps of other languages, whether it was from Opera, or that they simply lived there for a period of time. He brushed a hand by the conductor’s face, “I said, merci, with an I at the end. It’s French, for thank you. I can’t imagine a time when I would ask you for mercy.”

He wasn’t exactly lying. But going back to bed sort of sounded good. One day, very, very far away. So far away, that it’d never come.

Sounds like Broadway... He wasn’t eve going to dignify that with a response because it was going to open another can of worms. “He’s a character.” Isaac tended to date characters, after all, for better, or for worse. He fell silent. Rei probably disliked characters, if he’d ever met Bradley...probably would have been quite the showdown.

And even though he had never been part of one before, Isaac already found the idea of a triangle unpleasant.

“I could come home with you,” He said, “I’ll sleep at your place and you can work...you can make me more food...” Actually the more Isaac thought about it, the more welcoming the distraction seemed to be.

After all, after Rei left, all Isaac was going to do was stress over a phone call. That wasn't restful. At all.

Mercy with an 'i' on the end? Now this was why he didn't learn French. That was absolutely ludicrous. Rei was about to begin sharing his opinion in the fine language when he realized that the word had a different meaning in general. Well, that certainly made more sense than 'mercy, I mean it'. He smiled, finally understanding the meaning of the words before he leaned into the hand that touched his cheek. "Don't tempt me to give you reason to."

Knowing characters was something Rei could understand. He knew a couple himself, Isaac certainly being one of them. He didn't remark on this, letting this conversation topic close as to not upset or rise the man into his previous state of stress.

Rei raised a brow. "You want to come home with me?" He repeated, before the man explained himself rather logically. It did make sense. He wouldn't have to worry about a man sleeping in his bedroom, he would know he would be getting a balanced meal and most likely he would finish faster.

"Fine. No funny ideas though," he agreed, finding it amusing just how often they were seeing each other. He could let the man visit for the day. He wouldn't be sleeping over, that much Rei couldn't yet allow...but sleeping for the afternoon to assure that they wouldn't be stressed? There was nothing wrong with that.

"Do you need to bring anything with you?" He asked, referring to medicine or anything that could pop into question. Maybe he'd grab an orange or two, just for later.

What was that even supposed to mean, don't give him a reason to? Bradley just made his head hurt, he didn't need Rei to join the club. Really, he didn't. His temple prickled a little as he gave his boyfriend an unappreciative look. "I'm not in the mood to try funny business, and I don't try funny business with everyone...you're not one of them." Because a.) Rei didn't have the humor for it, and b.) Isaac had everything to lose. This only reminded him how important playing the right cards had to be.

But...hey, he'd gotten a step closer, he'd gotten himself invited back a second time (although for a bad reason,) but there was no guarantee that things would always stay the way Rei wanted them to. Isaac was convincing. If his accent wasn't, his hands were.

Besides, if Isaac was around, Rei could eat a decent lunch and Isaac didn't have to brave the cold to get to a deli or anything.

"You seriously don't trust me," but he said it lightly. No need to make a big deal out of it, he only needed Rei to know that he was aware of the fact. Isaac stood up and stretched, "Besides, we have rehearsal tonight, I have no intention of starting something that I can't finish." This much was true, but nowhere in the book did it say it had to end well.

"I think I'm good, I need to buy meds and grab a coat and...maybe money for a taxi, Matthias took the car and who knows how long it's going to be."

Rei pondered the thought, wondering if he truly didn't trust the man. "I accepted your idea of having you at my house. It's an improvement that you'll listen and respect my warning," he countered lightly. He noticed how the man wasn't as upset about it as before. Letting go from the hug he was in, he wondered just what was going through the mans mind.

Then again, that was dangerous territory he wasn't sure he could handle. Ever.

Rehearsal. Shit, he forgot. He had work to do. "...I have cold medicine at home and I have money. Just grab your coat," Rei instructed, knowing that he had no time at all to wait for the man.

Absentmindedly, he grabbed two oranges before going for his coat and putting on his own shoes. They seemed to be transfering houses a lot, seeing each other in living quarters or in the rehearsal hall no where else.

"Hey Isaac," the conductor spoke, once again, realizing he hadn't been thinking. "We should watch a movie or eat dinner...or something like that," he rambled, his mind in its own little world. "I mean, we're dating right?"

Well, obviously Isaac had to, sort of. Since he had to get what he wanted, and he couldn't get anxious now that the prize was practically dangling in his face. He had made that mistake last time over the phone. He wouldn't make such a mistake again. Somehow, it didn't seem quite right to let Pearce pay for the taxi, but Isaac thought he deserved it and didn't say anything to that. he merely fetched his coat from his bedroom and shrugged it on.

"If you trusted me, you wouldn't even have to give me a warning." He patted his pocket to make sure he had his keys.

"Besides, I've already announced my ulterior motives, to get more food and free cough medicine," he grinned, "You can't get anymore sneaky than that." And he was halfway telling the truth, he didn't have any other motives,...yet. Just had to see how things go.

But when they were standing there waiting for the doorman to call a taxi, Isaac almost tripped over himself. Rei made it sound so casual, as if they really were...sort of dating. Although Isaac didn't know if that was a good thing or a bad thing. Right now though, he'd chalk it up to a good thing.

After all, all they did was see each other at work, and Isaac doubted that it could get too bad. Although he wanted it to, just to make him squirm.

"A dinner and a movie sounds nice," He said, stepping up to the next taxi that approached, "But considering that we have rehearsals on weekdays and you seem to dislike taking a day off, how would we manage?" He knew he was getting somewhere if Rei cancelled rehearsal for a date. He could dream.

"It's merely a matter of double checking. We discussed this already," Rei spoke before shaking his head at the mans reply. Free cough medicine and food. That wasn't sneaky, that was a given. But it was best to not argue on it any further and just accept the explanation.

Without a pause, Rei searched for a cab, his eyes narrowing down on one and somewhat glaring at it, as if daring it to not stop. It wisely chose to do so, coming to a direct halt in front of them, not any of the other individuals who groaned and spoke how they were there first. But open seeing the look Rei was giving the cab, they quickly backed off.

It as best not to prolong a conductor with work to do for rehearsal. After getting in the cab and relaying his address, Rei wondered exactly how they would manage. "Rehearsals aren't that long. If it's a morning rehearsal we can do evening, if it's an evening we can do something during noon. Time management."

He'd have to worry about moving his out of rehearsal work around but he could manage. Probably.

Rei would be no means cancel a rehearsal. The thought hadn't even crossed his mind. He had made it clear that business and personal were going to be separate lives and he meant it. He wasn't going to move rehearsal for a date or do anything as absurd as cancel it.

"Speaking of dates, I went to watch a musical on Saturday," Rei spoke lightly before frowning. "It was dreadful. The main character...some french blond fellow, completely pompous. Don't know why anyone would willing go."

Well, then Isaac had his goal for the next few days. Whether or not it remained to be achievable was another story altogether. Isaac though, had a few weapons in mind, and he knew if he played his cards right...he had a point though, between Rei being a workaholic and Isaac's rediscovered love for practicing and weird annoying exes that wouldn't go back to England where he fucking belonged...they were in for quite a spin.

"Yeah, I guess we could," and Isaac had to admit, it'd been a while since he had been serious with anyone to actually take time off to go on a date. It was a strange novelty, actually. "I've never been very good with time." And yet, he still managed to find time to get everything done, granted, his hours were ungodly.

But then he stopped.

Well, obviously, this was coming up, Pearce had even warned him that it would be. (Perhaps it would be best for Isaac to think of him as Pearce from now on, after all...he needed to be objective, if he wasn't...)

Isaac touched a hand to his temple.

"What do you want me to say to that, exactly?" He asked finally. After all, there were a billion answers that he could have given, except...well, if he let Pearce throw him the rope, Isaac could find a way to save himself instead of just reaching in the dark.

The events of Saturday had not come to memory to Rei at the moment. He was by no means referring to the hug and kiss he saw, how the blond man in question had practically thrown himself on the violinist.

He had been making a little light conversation. It seemed that failed and it highly irritated him to the reply he received. What did he want him to say to that? He could have damn asked why it was so dreadful.

"Look, I hate musicals like the next person but you don't have to look that unhappy--"

Then it hit him. His face went through a few emotions. First his eyes widened as he remembered, his mouth parting as the memory hit him. Then the muscle in his jaw twitched. Then he glared.

"I wasn't talking about that event but thanks for reminding me."

It was rather blunt, as the light haired man looked outside the window and took in a deep breath trying to gather himself. "And I wanted you to ask why I felt that way about the musical. Where I would have gone on for a bit on how Nick was an ass for telling me it was a waste of front row seats, to how its despicable that our performance and his could both warrant a standing ovation and they even receive better recognition because they have someone who's bloody French."

Rei's tant ended when he remembered what they were on. "But now I'd like an explanation for the pre-show I saw instead."

Isaac's philosophy was simple, why drag it out? It was inevitable like a bomb trying to explode, or peeling off a bandage off a scab. If he did it quickly, it probably wouldn't hurt...as much. Why else would Pearce bring that up, if not to demand an explanation from Isaac? It almost seemed strange, and he sighed again. He really should not have gone. He had had an inkling that Bradley had something planned, and yet--

Yet he had known that and gone the the theatre like a lamb going to his slaughterhouse. It wasn't like Isaac could just cancel an effect that someone had on him, even though he hadn't seen that someone for years.

"You...you saw that?" Well, a bunch of people did. And Isaac had unplugged the house phone from any magazine trying to ask for an interview from Bradley St. Ryan's ex-boyfriend. That had only happened once, but once was one time too many.

"It's not a big deal, he just messes with me, it's not like I mess back." Of course he wouldn't, after all, Bradley had wounded Isaac's pride at least twice, if not thrice over.

"I really...to be completely honest, I didn't even know he was going to do that...Matthias just thought it'd be a waste to not go since we had private box tickets. And I know what he's doing...he doesn't really want me, he just wants to prove something, like how he's friendly with all the people he shagged...and anyway, he's in London now, so..."

(Or not really, except neither Pearce nor Isaac knew that yet.)
