There was a murmuring buzz. Press loved this sort of thing, love stories, triangles gone awry. There was some speculation as to who Isaac was involved with--couldn't be Matthias, of course not. But before they could actually ask him, the person who he least wanted to see walked up towards them and clamped them on the shoulder. Nicholas York. One of those critics that Isaac would like very much to send to hell for a few eternities, not just one. Although it peeved Isaac to no end, that York seemed to be more or less comfortable in the spotlight, when he had been...Bradley had always been there to steal his thunder, so that hadn't been bad. But...if Nick York was here-- Rei Pearce was here too. But Isaac did a quick sweep of the vicinity and could not find him. Was that a good thing or a bad thing, he didn't know. Somehow, they got out of that crowd, because the cast was coming out and Isaac really, really did not want to see Bradley again. "Call me brat again and I will strangle you." Isaac said, although he was suddenly exhausted as Matthias looked at the critic up and down-- "Course we haven't met, I'm old news, last season's concertmaster, Matthias Derringer, not 'Dog' as some would have you believe." Isaac winced. (Wow, that hit close to home). "I'm not planning anything," he said loosening his tie and stuffing it back into his pocket, "Least of all cheating. And least of all, with him." After all, Bradley had cheated on him first, what sense would it make for Isaac to cheat on Rei with the guy that had cheated on him first. "I may do a lot of things, Mr. York, but I don't cheat." Speaking about cheating always had that effect on Isaac. York would have done better to leave it alone. Matthias' grip tightened on Isaac's arm. "Would you excuse us?" |

Nick promptly ignored Isaac's threat and looked at Matthias with an amused smile. Now this kid wasn't too bad, didn't have a chip on his shoulder like his friend. Sure he seemed annoyed but it was reasonable when you were in the presence of the black headed arse. He seemed surprised though when he finally realized the name. "You're Derringer?" He gave another laugh, shaking his head. "I've heard about you." He'd always liked Derringer from the rare stories Rei shared of work, but the conductor rarely praised his concert masters. Derringer had been an exception. Isaac was just brought up for being an ass who was bipolar. Difference. "Pleasure to meet you though," he spoke. It was bothering him how Isaac had looked around to find Rei. Good luck with that, as he watched through the door as the man in white threw down his cigarette, got into a cab and drove off. Last thing he needed was for the two of them to meet and fix things. He hummed as he listened, his years of a reporter slowly making him nod. Something had happened with Bradley and it didn't end well at all. Perhaps Bradley wasn't loyal like the rumors said and had done the same to Isaac. It did nothing though, to increase the care he had for the tall man though. "I believe that then," he spoke as he eyed the man who filled in so much information on his own. "But I don't trust you. No one suddenly gets inspired to give them bloody fingers because of a damn lecture and being 'interested'." "Off course," he spoke, nodding to Matthias with a smile. Someone with manners. "Give it a season and Langley will be old news," he spoke with a nod before turning around and pausing. "...And you never denied the bet. Don't get excited just because you got somewhere when he was sick. Having sex with a feverish Pearce isn't the hardest task if you really want to," he spoke quietly, eyes sparkling as he revealed the little piece of his relationship with Rei. "Have a good night." The door opened all at once, the audience spilling out to cover the space between them as Nick exited the building. |

Now Isaac might have to strangle both of them, what was this? Matthias and his arch-nemesis Nick York getting along? Unthinkable. But Matthias just shrugged again, "Well, yes, I'm Derringer, and I'm well aware that I'm that unforgettable." Something in Isaac boiled, his temper--although why it was boiling was another matter, a much more complicated matter, "Of course you don't trust me, you don't like me, and I accept that completely, York. You're just jealous of me." At least Isaac got to onesided phone sex and Rei, he knew, had been drunk, but it had been purely consensual and Rei was the one that had offered. "Isaac..." Matthias warned, he had this uncanny sense of not helping his own case, ever. "I'll have you know that we did not have sex," Isaac gritted out, Rei had tried, once, and Isaac had suggested phone sex, in a way, that wasn't even sex, just masturbation, he had all his bases covered. "And do I even have to deny the bet? It's ridiculous." Matthias had to admit he sounded pretty convincing. But at the end of the day, Isaac really...was going to dig himself into a hole. "Isaac, go wait in the car, all right? Please?" "Are you going to stand here and talk to him?" Isaac looked rightly scandalized, "Matthias--" Matthias put a hand on his shoulder, "Damage negation, all right?" Isaac looked unconvinced, but went anyway, Matthias watched him disappear down one of the rows before he shook his head, "Isaac and Bradley have always had a violent history...it's kind of my fault for dragging him out here today. I didn't think that St. Ryan was going to make a big deal either..." (And Bradley had sent them free tickets to a private box.) "So of course he'd be out of sorts...but it's probably pointless to ask you to understand him." After all, even Matthias didn't understand. |

Nick wanted to laugh. The poor brat didn't even understand what was being told to him. Did he need to even outright say it? That he had slept with beloved conductor, had him first? But he was defensive. Pulling off his suspicions on something as simple as jealousy and not liking him. Nick was tempted to bring up Joshua who had suggested the idea of hidden intentions in the first place. A man desperate with something that looked like a time limit, which had made them call Sarah and had her formulate the idea of a bet. It wasn't just him but he couldn't say that. "It's the ridiculous things that are sometimes worth observing," he muttered before he watched Isaac leave, relaxing immediately before shaking his head slowly. "It doesn't look like those two have finished business," Nick spoke, watching the brown haired man in front of him. A man who also seemed to know something. "I don't mean to be offensive, but I truly couldn't care less about your friend. The problem is that he's being sewing ties with someone he doesn't understand." He wondered how much to give away, how much Rei would forgive him for. Nick was willing to push his boundaries. "That kid is up to something and he doesn't realize the bomb he's tinkering with," he mumbled before looking at Matthias with a smile. "Rei seems cruel but he has his good sides. Even you would have liked him before that little incident. I'm guessing Isaac doesn't know anything about her because whenever Rei lets it slip, the relationship always ends." Rei hated people knowing. "I don't like the idea of him and Rei. If things go wrong because of that mans planning, you can count on your phil receiving the cost. What I want to know is if I'm alone on this perspective." It was an offer, a hidden offer to separate the two of them. He had a feeling even Matthias wasn't liking it. |

Nick York could kiss Isaac's ass, even if he had Rei Pearce first, Isaac could take away from that, that he didn't harbor good thoughts towards that particular encounter. The few times that they had spoken about it, Isaac knew that Rei was increasingly hostile towards York, which he was glad about. Actually. Matthias struggled, but he kept his true emotions under wraps as he watched York talk. He turned his eyes to where Isaac was a moment ago and then shrugged. "Sometimes, sewing ties with the wrong sort of people...it's a mistake that Isaac has making for most of his life. It's one of those things...I'm not asking you to like him, I just..." And now he was really struggling because he more or less meant the whole thing as a joke and Isaac wasn't meant to take it seriously. He did, and now he was a little too much into it and it was just sort of bad. It was sort of horrible because now Isaac liked Rei and-- Of course they had unfinished business, they had a violent history, and those history never worked out well. And especially if both of them had issues like Isaac and Bradley. Isaac didn't know he liked Rei, but Matthias knew he did. "You don't care about Isaac but I do, and..." Matthias shrugged again, "No, to tell you the truth, I don't like it, but I'm not going to sabotage Isaac, and even if...I can't do it, okay?" |

The man was struggling with the decision. It was all Nick needed to know as he reached into his pocket and pulled out his wallet, going through a few things before pulling out a business card, his cellphone and home labelled on it neatly. "Letting him be with Rei is a sabotage," Nick pointed out. "Rei has skeletons in his closet. He didn't just chose to be a conductor for giggles, he hated it at first. He just grew it master it because he had no other option if he wanted to stay in this world." The world of classical music that is. Well, he did have a few options. A teacher like David. A theatre owner like Leroy. A critic like Nick. But for someone who yearned for the stage and loved it so dearly, those weren't really options. "Call me if you change your mind or if you think I'm wrong," he spoke, handing the card to the man with a smile. "You're a good guy. I'd hate to see you deal with the consequences of this relationship." He paused for a moment before winking. "He hasn't sewed ties with all the wrong people though. Makes me wonder how someone like him can know you. But lets just keep this between us, alright?" Nick was planning to leave, then and there before he felt a rather important piece of information needed to be said. "But if you ever see Rei smoke in front of Isaac, know that its too late. If anything bad happens after that..." He trailed off, shaking his head. Best not go there. "Have a good night." |

"I know that." Matthias looked conflicted, but for a while he didn't reply. Isaac rarely liked anyone like that, he knew that. Somehow, he just knew. And he didn't know if Rei smoked in front of Isaac yet (the answer was yes, but Isaac liked something and kept it to himself, which was bad.) It didn't feel right, though, Isaac liked Rei Pearce, whether or not he knew it. It was frightening when he didn't know it. But York...he still didn't know York's angle. And he didn't want to hurt Isaac. Besides, Matthias was feeling rather guilty because this was his idea and this was what he was reaping, and Isaac was diligently digging himself in a hole and... Even though Isaac thought York was an ass, Matthias thought he had a point, so he took the card, and besides, Matthias thought he was okay--York had a chip of his own on his shoulder for whatever reason, but he and Isaac were best friends. Which was probably good reason to be wary of Nicholas York. "I'll do that, you'll probably have to wait for a while for the call, good bye, York." Before Matthias could find a reason to stay--or feel too guilty. York was worried in his own way, so in a way... He had to get back to Isaac, before he got too guilty. And he was already guilty. Isaac had his eyes closed in the car, "You better not have been flirting with York." "I'm so not flirting with York..." Matthias shooed him over, "You're too tired to drive, give me the keys." Somehow, maybe this made him less guilty. And Isaac was obviously upset enough not to argue with him and shifted over as per his request. Things really were spiraling out of control. "Wanna go for a drink? I'll stay sober." "Why not?" Although Isaac's voice lacked its usual enthusiasm. |

Nick immediately gave a call to Joshua as he entered his car and recalled the nights proceedings right from the beginning. The violinist was pacing at this point before sighing slowly. "They're not compatible," Nick interrupted, hopeful that his words held some truth. "We think he's planning something. Compatibility has nothing to do with that," Joshua spoke before groaning. "We might just need to let things play out. Take their course...those two have enough history that interference probably would only do them good. Julia and this Bradley will certainly take care of everything." Speaking of Julia and Bradley, those were the exact two people Rei had in mind at the moment. He had passed by his home after he got a call from his sister telling him she was at home, sitting at the bar and talking to the bartender. He was a regular, so it wasn't strange to talk. They'd known each other for years. "So how are things? Heard you had a legendary concert last night. Newspaper you'll finally give all the other phils a run for their money. Just wait until the letters start coming in," the man joked, the faint grey mustache covering his top lip as he smiled. "Though it wouldn't be the first time you shot them down." Rei sighed, nodding as he swirled his cognac. "We have another concert, where the expectations will be just as high. I don't remember what I ever did...how am I supposed to live up to it?" He asked, lashes lowered as he tried to reason with the man who was old enough to be his grandfather. "Don't think. That's always been your problem," he spoke as he took the glass, refilled it and placed it back in the mans hands. "My treat. As a good luck charm. Just stop thinking, stop looking and listen. That's your job, isn't it?" It was his job. What was worse was how difficult it was becoming to go to work everyday, the sound of the violin entrancing him too much. "Or you can always just play for them instead." Rei's head shot up. "....That'll certainly have the headlines tomorrow. Conductor leaves his baton and picks up instrument, they'd have a field day if they begin their research." |

Isaac got so horrendously drunk. Drunk enough that he spent most of the morning emptying his intestines into the toilet. Matthias wondered, for the fifty thousandth time since this mess began, "Isaac, you know, you of all people, I thought that you were a responsible drinker." He leaned against the doorway of Isaac's bathroom, "D'you think you can get up and get dressed? Call time in an hour." Call time. Isaac's head felt like it was about to split. Was this what it felt like to be Pearce? Constant headache, having nothing go your way? Last night hadn't worked out the way he wanted to at all, and this morning, he ordered Matthias out to buy the major papers, that picture wasn't plastered all over the arts page, but still, it was there, hidden in a blurb and Isaac thought the picture looked horrible. "I'm going to have to, aren't I? I mean, if I miss concert, I'll lose my job, and...I swear, I'm not avoiding him, I have no reason to avoid him. Bradley kissed me, it's not like I kissed him back and it's not like we snogged--made out." Matthias looked him up and down and thought of York's card hidden away in his dresser. Isaac liked crawling under people's skin, he was Isaac, and that was what he did, but he himself never thought to let people.... "I have no reason to avoid him, all right? I might look a little pale, but I'm fine." Isaac got wobbling to his feet. This was great, concerts seemed to be full of bad luck, first it seemed as though the conductor was going to collapse, and now it was the concertmaster. "Worse things worst...you're just going to have to switch with me, like the good old days, hm?" Isaac smirked, "Let me get dressed." |

Rei didn't stay at the bar long and didn't drink anymore after the refill. The first drink was put on his tab, before he walked back to the apartment and took a slow shower, trying to go over the situation in his mind. It was all entirely unrealistic, moving all too quickly and forming unbelievable conclusions that needed to be fixated immediately. Phone sex of all things. It had certainly been the right move to hang up, that he couldn't deny. His cold had faded away over the days, as it had hit him hardest Thursday and Friday and by Sunday he only had a mild headache. Drunk and sick no more, Rei was finally able to think properly and act like he always did. Yesterday showed that Isaac still had ends he needed to tie up before moving unto a new relationship, which would mean they would need to severe this thing they had. Something he didn't understand. They certainly weren't friends so they couldn't be friends with benefits. And if that was Isaac's aim then he would quickly learn his mistake. Being sex friends with his concertmaster for the season would form unnecessary biases. He'd be thinking without his mind, he'd rather quit before then. Which brought up another problem. His job. He tugged at his tie, the same white suit he wore yesterday on him, with a light blue button up shirt on him instead. His hair was slicked back, the beautiful appearance once again cast upon him that created a barrier that made many just watch and stay away. He glanced at his music though, waiting to be picked up before he remembered the bartender's words. Rei walked out the door before locking it, stretching his arms above his hand as he walked by the reception. "Mr. Pearce sir, I think you've left something behind," the security started, very well aware of the conductor's occupation. "I assure you, I've forgotten nothing." "But your music--" He raised a finger, tapping his temple once. "All up here. Now, can you call a cab? It's an annoyance to yell for one." |

Maybe whatever Rei had, it was affecting Isaac, after all, it wasn't like they didn't share spit, and even though Isaac had a relatively strong immune system, it was only a matter of time before the bug got to him and...or maybe he was just making excuses for himself. Matthias took the wheel again, and when they passed through the parking security and parked his car, Matthias looked at his friend again. "Look, seriously, you shouldn't have drunk so much last night." "I assure you I'm sober. Playing violin's a reflex for me, anyway." And really, it wasn't like Isaac didn't play violin drunk before. He'd done it a couple of times while he was in Boston and London, but he'd never done it...under Rei Pearce. "Besides, Rei would--" "For God's sake, stop calling him that, why would you even call him that?" Isaac blinked, " It's his name, what else am I supposed to call him?" Suppose the two of them both brought a new meaning of 'lovesick' to the table. Matthias sighed and unbuckled his seatbelt. "I meant it as a joke, you know," he said quietly, "You didn't have to take it and run with it and make a big mess." "I know what I'm doing." "...And that I don't doubt." Matthias got out of the car, "Just stay here, I'll come get you." "I'm not missing this concert because of something stupid." "If you're going to be emptying out the pills you took on stage, yes, that would be pretty stupid." For a long moment, Matthias just looked at him with his head lolling to the side, "And yes, you look that horrible." He left Isaac there, and half expected him to follow, except Isaac didn't and he was glad that he'd given him enough to think about to stay put. But obviously, Isaac being concertmaster and all, his presence was immediately missed, Patricia and Gabrielle put on their best concerned faces. "Where's Isaac?" "Sleeping off a cold in the car, at least, I hope...has anyone seen Pearce?" |

Thin and ticking, the minute hands in all the halls struck the number '3', perfectly, giving away that as promised, fifteen minutes passed the hour, the door opened and Rei entered. There was another murmur on his appearance, so different from the previous night yet more commanding than ever before. It was his empty hands that startled most, as his always carried a briefcase filled with his music and various other notes. Yet there was nothing. His hands were empty, his phone and wallet in his pockets and the baton safely in his room. There was nothing for him to bring except his music and the obvious state of leaving it behind was obvious. For he could only have left it behind. It was impossible to forget, he could only make it all purposeful. Which made thoughts wander to the night before, when he had pushed aside the podium when he had been too dizzy to even read the notes on the page and the writing telling him what to do. He remembered it now though, the loud sound echoing through his mind as he looked around. Rei did a quick count, easy with the groups and such and from what he could tell, there were one hundred members in the room. One hundred musicians. He had one hundred and one. Someone was missing. The last and worst person to miss; his concertmaster. Isaac had better be late. Avoidance was immature, something he wouldn't tolerate when it came to the a concert of all things. Or perhaps he was with Bradley. His muscle jumped before he merely walked past and to his usual room, keeping the door open as he reached for the extra music and just leafed through it lightly. |

Isaac stayed in the car for a good twenty minutes, Matthias had this uncanny talent putting him between a rock and a hard place. It wasn't like Isaac was much in denial, yes, he was on the verge of being bedridden from a nasty cold, but...Rei. He had a job to do and whether or not Rei appreciated this fact, the fact of the matter was that Isaac agreed with him. Avoidance was immature and avoidance was what he had done with Bradley. (Except, not really, Isaac thought he'd broken up with Bradley loud and clear when he had gone over to his apartment to smash things.) Besides, Isaac did nothing wrong. He didn't even reciprocate any of Bradley's gestures towards him. They hadn't even popped the wine. Some people couldn't take a hint. So he'd take the lecture from Rei (who refused to go back to Pearce in his head) and convince Matthias that he had rested some. But before he could journey up to the backstage, he had to empty his stomach again, so much so that the parking security guy asked if he needed to call an ambulance. No, Isaac waved away his help, he was fine. Or, he was fine for now, anyway. Except for being very pale and not completely steady on his feet, he was fine. It was a long elevator ride. And when he got there, he could see the others looking at him and Matthias attempting to follow Pearce into his closet and explain that, "Hey, cut Isaac some slack, he's coming down with some bug or something--" Isaac cleared his throat, "I don't need anyone to cut me any slack," he announced, "I'm sorry I'm late and you can lecture me later, I'm going to go warm up now." Matthias shook his head, "Isaac--" "Shut up, Matthias." And he snapped it so precisely, that everyone in the room fell silent, even Matthias, who...in his memory, Isaac had never told him something like that meant it. |

Black notes that doted the various pages were removed from Rei's attention as he heard Matthias's voice, keeping his face flat as he listened. Isaac was sick? Guilt came to him inside, as he remembered a few of their kisses that should not have taken place. Not to mention that they had shared a bed during a fever for a few hours. A mistake that was probably going to cost them both. Before he could reply and demand to know where in the world his concertmaster was, a voice coughed and let his presence be known. Rei took a few steps forward, stepping out of his room to eye the black haired man who presumed that he was fine. His skin was pale. An unhealthy pale. Rei knew pale, it ran in his family and he had always had the porcelain skin but this wasn't a healthy shade. Neither where the swollen lips and tired eyes, and lack of strength the man seemed to hide. Rei knew a sick man, he had been recently and was responsible to for this case too. Even more surprising was the strict order from Isaac's mouth, which sounding so strikingly familiar that his eyes narrowed and he glared down the concertmaster. "In my office Langley. Now," Rei commanded, the heavy meaning sending the atmosphere worse than it already was. |

Isaac was usually pretty good at hiding those things, but the fact remained that he hadn't been sick for the longest time and probably that made all the difference. He shrugged off his violin and handed it to Matthias as the other man brushed past him, "Tune up for me." Since there wasn't that much time left and Isaac didn't trust just anyone to touch his violin. But then...Langley leaving--Pearce's mouth made him wince. Isaac had grown a little too used to being 'Isaac', perhaps that was a bad idea. He rolled his eyes and followed the conductor inside the office, closing the door behind him and just leaning against the doorway, fiddling with his bowtie. This...was not a good idea to do right here, but maybe it really was better to get everything out of the way. "I swear I'm fine, I'm taking my solo in the first half, but Matthias and I can switch for the second half and that way it'd be better, it's not like I can't play and unlike some other people, I know my limits." (Rei Pearce, it seemed to Isaac, did not know his own limits.) And then as he didn't like playing the avoidance game he sighed again. "And what happened yesterday, I didn't see you, but I know you're there because we ran into York. That's not what it looked like." Not that Rei would listen to him, but maybe it was worth a shot, he'd maybe rack up some guilty pity points or something. "I don't suppose you have cold meds on you, do you?" |
