Isaac had one of those light English lilts that sounded eloquent, but it wasn't easy to shake, so he was still dwelling on that when--

Well, obviously the Western Rivera was no strangers to reservations of large parties, but the moment the said 'party' walked in, Isaac choked on his wine. Thankfully, their table at the back was partially hidden by other tables and he was able to peek at...Rei Pearce with a bunch of people...and Alice? A family gathering.

"What's wrong with you?" Matthias snapped his fingers in his face.

Isaac made a brief 'turn around' motion with his hand, and when Matthias did, his jaw also dropped. But he recovered quickly, "This is a good restaurant, not a crime for us to be here. Get another bottle of wine." (Funny how he said those things in the same breath.)

Well, their table was hidden anyway, Isaac waved over a waitress and asked for more wine in English-lilted French. Gah. He was usually much better than this.

"I suddenly want to leave. It's like having your mother in law at the next table and glaring at you." He said, half meaning it.

Alice had always been a little different from the rest of the family. Other than her bright personality that didn't seem to the ruled by strict facial expressions, she was also very sensible to her surroundings, let her barrier down easier and saw things others didn't.

Rei would never had known Isaac was there if the following had not occurred.

"I need to pee," Alice chirped, as if it was quite normal. Another round of laughter went through, causing the girl to frown as she most certainly didn't find what was so funny. So she looked at her youngest 'uncle', though he was more like a brother. "Sam, come with me!"

The blond boy with girls blinked. "But I'm a boy."

"But no one will know the difference," she argued, as if it was obvious. Which it was. He wasn't at the age yet where gender could clearly be defined, and even then, it would take a strong look at his nether regions to determine the truth.

He frowned, rather unhappy about it but nodding as Rei gave him a small nudge. But it seemed fate had other things in plan, as Alice grabbed his hand. "Walk us Unka!" He nodded slowly as he winked at the rest of his family who merely nodded back before separating into a different topic. Something about Sarah's pregnancy.

Rei walked with the two of them, brother happily holding his hand and telling various stories as Alice urged them to pee before she stopped, blinked and smiled.

"Unka Isaac!"

Rei's head whipped to the side. Shit. This wasn't good at all. What the hell was he doing here?!

"I'm moving to France on of these days," Isaac grumbled at his wine glass, "I'm going to buy a house in Lyon and just stay there and be a hermit." Anything, anything at all to keep his mind off of what he really did need to think about, but not here. Not with Pearce at the same restaurant and while Isaac's English lilt had ingrained itself back into his speech completely without his permission. Not fair.

Matthias thought hte whole thing was hilarious, "Isaac, you wouldn't survive as a hermit. Don't be ridiculous, they won't even know we're here--"

"Unka Isaac!"

Isaac shot his friend a glare, "I hate you." He mouthed before he forced himself to look at the direction of the voice. Alice, and a boy holding her hand, and Pearce...towering over them both.

Matthias looked his conductor up and down before offering a, "hey, small world isn't it?" And then even though he knew perfectly well that Isaac didn't want to talk with his English lilt, he had to. And Isaac took a deep breath.

"Hello...Alice, nice to see you again," The lilt was faint, but the fact that it was there at all...and...considering what he and Pearce went through earlier. "...Do you feel any better?" That sounded neutral enough, didn't it? And coupled with an all-purpose smile. Hopefully Pearce wouldn't pick up on the accent. It was wierd, but Isaac didn't want to explain it.

Ever. Not to Pearce, especially.

Rei nodded at the two of them. "It is," he replied to Derringer's words before he felt Alice remove her grip on his hand and jog toward Isaac before grabbing his hand and smiling up brightly up at him, an inner knowledge in her eyes. "It's nice to see you too!" She replied rather happily.

Sam raised a brow as he glanced at his brother in confusion.

Rei however, had the question walk him down what happened after his meeting with Isaac, rather than the meeting itself. About what happened with Nick, causing his expression to fall all of a sudden as if a heavy weight was placed on his shoulders. "...That's debatable."

It was such a strange answer, different from 'yes', 'no', or 'somewhat'. Because it was debatable. He felt better after he had that talk with Isaac, albeit embarrassed. But he felt worse by the time he got home. A sudden sneeze seemed to punctuate it.

He realized however that Derringer had no clue as to who was with him, and Isaac no idea who the boy still holding his hand was. "Sorry, that's Alice, my niece and this is Sam, my younger brother. Family get together," he explained briefly before Sam spoke in his quiet, controlled voice that made a waitress passing by stop. Even his voice didn't reveal his gender.

"Come Alice, didn't you have to go to the bathroom?"

Rei was busy during the exchange, as his mind faintly noticed the accent Isaac had. It sent a shiver up his spine, a reminder at the same actions that had occurred in the car and how strangely enough, the one with the violinist was so much more preferred. He almost wondered why he never noticed the accent to begin with.

He silently added that as a pro to his list, creating another tie.

Strange answer, but an answer nonetheless.

In Matthias' mind, Isaac was not a kid person. Ever. Even with his brother's three kids. But seeing the girl run to him and grab his hands and Isaac smiling back like that like he wasn't about to die or thrash something like he was with the boys. It was almost wondrous. Isaac said, "I hope you've been a good girl."

Oh. Alice, and Sam. But Pearce's younger brother? He looked like a kid. Well, there were some people like that. Isaac nodded over, wanting his accent to just go the bloody--hell away. The reason that Rei never noticed it was because Isaac wasn't affected before. Ever since that stupid ad in the paper. He was usually careful about sounding local. And he had a good ear for these things, so...was he putting on the accent reflexively?

Family gathering, huh? Isaac was almost envious, not that he'd want to sit with his family for a prolonged amount of time and share dinner with them, but it was the plain fact that Pearce could and Isaac could not...

That made him jealous. The only family member that he felt comfortable with was Larsen, his older brother, and his wife and kids, but he always felt like a third-wheel and tried to get out of there as soon as possible.

It was a little horrible. And it left his expression oddly wistful, it was an expression he didn't wear often, but he wore it when he didn't notice and he wore it well. And then he came to--

"A family gathering? Well, don't let us keep you."

Sam immediately became worried once he saw Rei's expression turn for the worst as his eyes relived something.

"Sorry for interrupting your dinner," Rei spoke, his voice sounding forced and just the slightest bit shaky. "Alice," he called, before the light haired girl nodded and smiled up at Isaac brightly.

"I'm always a good girl," she replied before she looked at him seriously and pressing her small hands on the chair as she pushed herself higher and whispered into the mans ear. "Take care of unka for me, he seems sad," she spoke softly before leaning down, smiling like before and giving a small wink. "Bye misters."

With that she ran off, taking her uncle's hand as he nodded to the two of them in a quiet departure, walking to the bathroom and leaning on the wall as Sam lead her inside, not surprisingly, blending in perfectly and not even getting a single glance of suspicion.

Now Rei was just left to his thoughts and cursing Nick.

That idiot. Why in the world did he have to do that? He was acting like a jealous, possessive boyfriend, which he wasn't. At least, he wasn't a boyfriend.

It had to do with the letter probably. The letter he hadn't dealt with yet and needed to come to terms with. Not to mention that Isaac would be needing a reply, because he couldn't just keep stringing the man along. They weren't teenagers anymore but adults. He sneezed again, groaning as he grasped his head as he felt a headache coming on. It was going to be a feverish night, he could tell.

He'd have to remember to lock the doors and turn off his phone.

Well, was it any consolation that Isaac was jealous of something else? It wasn't so much that he wanted to be a boyfriend (he did) but...that wasn't it at all. It was something else much, much more disturbing. He'd made out the fact at first, that he really wanted everything Pearce had. Why was that prophecy that he set for himself coming...true? It was not fair. So totally so not fair.

He blinked after Alice, and didn't dare look up at the man in question. Matthias, on the other hand, looked like he was about to choke, again. Take care of her uncle for her? He seems...sad.

In the immortal wise words of Joshua Bell...if he had Alice on his side, then his venture would succeed. And there it was again, a simple bet blown into something entirely out of proportion.

"Bye, Alice. And...Pearce, we'll see you at work tomorrow." A neutral greeting, a neutral farewell. And the accent would not leave him alone. Isaac reached for more wine. And then he glanced over at his friend accusingly, "Why aren't you drinking?"

"At the rate you're putting that away, we won't even need Walton," Matthias flicked him a half smile as he turned back to his soup. "Someone's gotta drive home, mate."

Before Isaac could call him out on it, Matthias added--

"And Isaac, you have a lot of explaining to do."

Did he? He guessed he did.

Multiple things were beginning to bother Rei. Why was it that he could so easily be calling Isaac by his first name...yet have his own pushed aside? It was maddening, ironically enough. He was happy the distance remained, because that was the way it should be...but the strange disconnect made him frown. He called Alice by her first name, and although she was a child, he felt jealous.

So he sneezed into his elbow, three times in a row even before he realized that he might have to leave sooner than he thought. They hadn't even eaten yet.

But he wasn't up for it. In fact, he wasn't even in the mood to go to the rehearsal tomorrow. A four hour rehearsal, that he scheduled. His previously mentioned weak immune system didn't help and neither did the thoughtless cold shower. It was so strange how not thinking could bring forth such warm circumstances and horrible ones later on.

He wasn't left to his thoughts for long, as Sam and Alice returned seconds later, each grabbing his respective hand before walking to the table, the two younger ones exchanging worried looks at their beloved family members expression.

Neither realized that at the moment, Rei was beginning to think that maybe he didn't need his pro and con list after all and just needed to remember how warm the embrace earlier today actually felt like.

Which was why he almost chocked when he heard the usually silent father of his, sitting right at the head of the table, practically hum the words, "looks like somebody's in love."

Well the thing was. Isaac had expressively asked Pearce to call him by his given name, and Pearce had consented, after fighting him tooth and nail for it. Pearce had made no such request and even though Isaac had called him Rei a couple of times, it still felt like pulling teeth, so unless Pearce repeated the request that Isaac had made, he'd be Pearce. Besides, that was the whole point of the exercise, wasn't it?

"What if I forfiet?"

For the first time, he considered it, that way, Isaac could remove himself, and Pearce could stop acting weird. Everything would go back to normal...right? (Probably not -damn his subconscious for always telling the truth...)

"Then the whole orchestra would never let you hear the end of it, besides, Isaac, just don't read too deeply into it..." Matthias was flipping through the dessert menu. "Want to split a mocha sundae?"

Isaac was about to answer that when his phone buzzed, "Yeah, fine, get whatever you want, I have to take this."

Larsen never called him, why was he calling him now? Isaac stood outside, where it was quiet, but kind of cold, since he had left his jacket inside, "I'd never thought you'd call me."

"What's with the accent?"

"Shut up." For the Langley brothers, this sort of banter was typical. But trust Larsen to pick up on the accent on just a few words. It was a bit infuriating.

Dinner was ordered without much of a hassle and without even thinking about it, Rei had gotten the foie gras. He had paused himself when he ordered it, but he didn't take it back. He sort of wished he did though when his family started grilling him.

"Rei...you hate liver," Rebecca pointed out. "I would know. You can practically sense it and demand it be removed."

"I've grown up since high school," he pointed out.

"Sure. Give it a year of two and Sam and Alice will both be taller than you," Sebastian teased easily as he took a sip of wine.

"Funny. Wasn't referring to my height."

"Off course, shrimp." Glares were exchanged, though it was hard to tell as it seemed as if their faces were always so flat.

"More importantly," Sarah interupted. "Who are y--"

"Is it Unka Isaac?" Alice spoke excitedly.

At this the entire family, minus Rei and Alice (and a rather disappointed Sam, who really had higher expectations for his favored family member), perked up and wore matching smiles of excitement as their eyes shined.

"Isaac?" They all spoke in unison.

"Quiet," Rei hissed. "He's here!"

"Here?!" At that moment, everyone at the table, once again, minus the trio who already left, left the table and searched for this mysterious man. Rei could only sigh and let his head fall against the table. This was why he didn't go out with them often. No matter how expressionless they were, there really wasn't a more animated group of people.

Fortunately for Pearce, Isaac was outside, and therefore nowhere to be found as he was in the middle of a phone conversation with his elder brother, which went something like this: "Are you out of a job yet?"

Of course all the Langleys had to rub it in Isaac's face that the profession he had chosen to go into was not a stable one, but so far, Isaac had managed to stay one step ahead of them and not only was he employed, he was employed well. "Hardly, thanks for your concern. I made concertmaster for the season." he was also trying to actively hit on his boss, but Larsen didn't need to know that part.

"Oh...that's good. Listen, I'm going to be in New York City this Friday for business. Can we meet up?" There was probably a heart surgeon's convention somewhere nearby. "I feel like I haven't seen you in a while."

"Your kids are going to send me to my grave early. I religiously avoid Chicago for that reason." Isaac pointed out, "Not this Friday, concert opens."

"Get me a ticket, I want to go."

"You...do?" Isaac knew his brother had been an aspiring cellist in his day, and he'd been accepted into Juilliard, but...he'd gone to med school instead. Isaac had never quite forgiven him.

"My kid brother's concertmaster, why not?"

"Oh, okay then...I'll see you Friday. I'm sort of in the middle of something so...I'll see you." Larsen's showing up might just be a good thing, having his brother nearby grounded him. Isaac hung up his phone and proceeded back to the table, only to note some movement from Pearce's table, like they were looking for someone. Right.

Matthias was digging into a sundae, "I know you don't like caramel, so I only poured it on half...that side's yours." Of course, it probably looked like a date, but sharing a giant sundae was economical.

They returned with no luck, a bit deflated by their wasted effort. Rei could only raise a brow and wonder why they would bother looking for someone they had no idea about. With only a name, they had nothing to go by.

"See anyone interesting?"

"Just some guy eating a sundae by himself," grumbled Sebastian, who seemed the most disappointed out of them all. It was his pride and joy to embarrass the conductor and a wasted chance was heart breaking to him.

"You'll see him on Friday," Rei spoke before pausing as the food was delivered and the hope renewed.

"He's...in your phil?" Rebecca asked nervously.

"You aren't..." Iain started.

"...even considering..." Sarah continued.

"...you you-know-what addict. We should put you in therapy," hissed Sebastian.

Rei looked appalled. "I am not! We have innocent ears at the table!"

"Your last boyfriend broke up with you because of it, and I cannot believe you are considering a musician."

"Actually, he's a violinist. Concertmaster." The conversation did not get any better from there.

"So that was..." Matthias licked his spoon and glanced over at him.

"Oh, my brother, apparently, he's going to be in town and he wants to come to the Phil's concert." Isaac said, "He plays--I mean, played the cello, so it's not like knows shit about the violin. It's going to be all right."

Matthias paled, "Larsen's..."

"Not his kids," Isaac was quick to add, "Just him, I think there's a convention around here somewhere. And...since he's here, I'll have even less of an excuse to go to the musical." The whole bloody damn thing that started all this.

"Why were you even considering the musical?"

"I was not," Isaac gathered the last of the sundae with his spoon and licked it clean, there was some commotion going on at the Pearce table, except he wasn't going to look. It was a family gathering, and...well, Isaac and Matthias were here eating a sundae. The bill arrived and they paid as they said they would: entrees were their own, Isaac the wine, and Matthias the dessert. As usual, they left a generous tip.

And Isaac would have said good-bye to Pearce, except he was with his family, and it'd look weird. Besides, tomorrow was Thursday, day before concert, Pearce would get an eyeful of him anyway (not literally, obviously).

"A bientot! Monsieurs, merci beaucoup!"

Isaac smiled at the waitress and she seemed to melt, and Matthias smiled at her and she melted. Matthias was better at this becausehe was actually inclined towards women. "De rien." Isaac told her and glanced over at Pearce's table. Maybe he'd nod and smile and maybe things wouldn't be awkward. But everything was working against him today...

When the food had arrived, strangely enough silence went across the table. Rei himself, had grown weary as he eyed the food he had ordered in front of him, biting his lip as he raised a fork to poke at it. Ugh. Food should never look like that or be of that consistency. He didn't even know why he ordered it anymore.

Neither did Sarah, although she was determined to find out. "What inspired the change in food options?" Not to mention that she was curious as to how he understood what he ordered or some things on the menu in general. There wasn't a word of english and Rei couldn't speak french to save his life.

Rei however, had finally taken a small piece of it on his fork, raised it and with a final gulp, put it in his mouth.

It was strange, different and like nothing he'd ever had before but most importantly it wasn't unpleasant.

Just like Isaac wasn't unpleasant.

But did that mean he liked it?

He glanced around as the family seemed to go to another topic that finally didn't revolve around him before he noticed Isaac. Light hazel locked with green, and swallowing seemed to become that much harder as the unthinkable happened.

Rei gave a smile.

Isaac thought it was a rather chaotic table, which was why he himself tended to avoid family dinners like the plague. It was enough that they were already related to you and you couldn't get rid of them. But once again, Pearce made him jealous. But amidst the chaos, he saw his conductor's eyes lift and look at him.

And then the unthinkable thing happened--well, actually two unthinkable things. One, he looked down and saw that Pearce was eating the foi gres that he professed to hate so much only days ago, when the two of them had eaten here. He didn't appear to be choking to death or anything.

And two...

Rei was smiling at him. One of those smiles that Isaac had seen once or twice, but usually he had to do something to provoke it first. This time, it was the other man who initiated it. Once he got over the shock of it, he grinned back and nodded.

Matthias couldn't resist rolling his eyes, "Now it's time to go, Mr. Darcy."

Isaac was grateful for the interruption, if anything...he turned to follow his friend, "I'm not Mr. Darcy."

"You sound British." As if that fucking explained everything; Matthias looked entirely too pleased at this observation.

"The Darcy in the movie sounded Irish, damn it..."
