"What would I do if I played?" Rei suddenly asked, revealing a hidden question that he asked himself again and again. "Quit my job and start from scratch?"

"No, that's just idiotic," David spoke without hesitating. Rei could practically hear the rolling of eyes, "but what if you did both? Kept your job and played. It doesn't have to be for concerts...but for us." The silence seemed to answer the improbability of that. "For Alice."

Now that was hitting a weak spot and they both knew it. "Or you can show your phil how one actually plays an instrument."

Rei would have laughed normally. In fact, he would have laughed a week ago and even given a snide comment back. But he didn't because his dream came back to him and all he could do was sigh. "I have to go to rehearsal."

That was when warning bells went off, bringing David to stop his laughing. "...You don't...like him, do you?"

Last week he would have shot him down. Now as he was trying to analyze himself for once, he wasn't sure. "I have to go David. I'll talk to you later."

Bradley St. Ryan was in town. Or...not exactly, the show wasn't set to open until Friday, the same day as their concert and Isaac...probably wasn't even going to see him. But it was just seeing his name there and knowing that they were in the same vicinity for a couple of days, that bugged him. But it couldn't affect his focus today. He had to focus, but Isaac couldn't remember the last time that he had been so out of sorts from just seeing someone's name in an ad in the arts section of the newspaper.

But Bradley did funny things to people.

Matthias leaned idly against the rack of stands as he watched his friend...well, Isaac didn't exactly mope, but when something was wrong, he couldn't hide it that well, maybe it was because he let everything roll off his back and very little bothered him.

Well. He deserved to know, if St. Ryan tried to pull anything funny, Isaac would know about it ahead of time (and no, it didn't sound like anything else they were planning.) A part of Matthias couldn't believe that Isaac couldn't let that roll off his back yet. It'd been years/ When something really got to him, it really got to him.

He finished setting up, and went to the front stand, where Isaac was fiddling around with Bach's G minor Adagio. Isaac disliked anything slow, and Matthias was of the opinion that really, he was reading a bit too much into this. Just an ad in the paper, was all. No need to play like the world was ending.

"...Look, you don't like musicals and he hates classical music, and remember, he hates the States...it'd be fine."

Everything seemed to be against him on this rainy wednesday. The moment Rei had stepped outside, he had felt the drops of water begin falling on his head before he realized that he had only a minute or two before the down pour would really start.

Unfortunately it was a good ten minute walk to the subway station. He ran most of the way but that didn't save him from the water, as he was left in a worse mood than yesterday merely because of the wet strands stuck to his skin, not to mention his clothing. But he had a clean blazer in the hall, a fresh, dry, clean blazer that he could put on.

As soon as he got there. Until then, he was wet, riding the subway stops before exiting and walking another block or two to get to the hall, getting wet the few parts he had managed to dry.

It was utterly annoying. So Rei opened the door whispering fierce curses at his luck, placing down his bag near the back like he always did as he walked down the long aisle, unaware of his soaked and practically see through white shirt.

He was going to wear his bloody blazer...as soon as he remembered where Leroy put it.

Well, that was one upside of having a car, Isaac had been too busy thinking about how Bradley St. Ryan could wreck his life more than he already had, to actually notice that it was raining. Or maybe it hadn't started raining until they pulled into the parking structure. But it had been a cold day, so he wore a coat for the first time, a coat that was hanging at the back of his chair.

He paused in his playing, "If he hated the States, he wouldn't even be here."

"So you think that he's just back here to stalk you?" Matthias had to raise an eyebrow, Isaac was ridiculous sometimes, really.

Isaac opened his mouth to say something else, but whatever he could have said stuck in his throat, as he looked out and saw a soaking wet Pearce enter the rehearsal hall. Sans Bradley, his mind might have gone down a less honorable path, but Isaac was nursing a hangover...and he was having problems.

"If you walk around wet like that, you're going to catch cold..." he reached for his coat, "Put this on or something." What he was doing, it was kind of reflexive, but he usually never had these reflexes when it came to a stubborn person like Pearce. And Isaac would have teased him for forgetting an umbrella, but that suddenly seemed like way too much work.

The change in Isaac's attitude didn't quite hit Rei. He was far too cold, far too tired, far too grumpy, far too hung over, and most importantly far too wet. He hated being wet. Even after taking a shower, he always dried off immediately. It was worse when one was getting wet unwillingly.

He didn't answer immediately, looking through various closets hidden on the sides as he just noted one empty hanger after the other. So he turned, glancing at the coat before shaking his head. "Thanks, but then it'll get wet and you'll catch a cold. Better me than you."

It was a strange form of politeness that probably wouldn't be understood. At the same time, Rei made progress, as a rather fluffy white towel as luckily placed in one of the closets. He breathed a sigh of relief before grabbing it and immediately working on drying his hair. He needed to get somewhat into a dryer state before he started rehearsal or they'd be even worse than yesterday.

"Bell's coming today by the way," Rei spoke. "After the first break though." He stopped rubbing as he felt his strands and frowned. Great. Now he had bed head.

It couldn't possibly get any better. At least he wasn't wearing white pants.

He was instead wearing beige, which were happily clinging unto his every curve without his knowing.

Isaac really did need to be in a better mood to appreciate these things. Even if he didn't notice, probably someone else would. Better Pearce than him? Really? Uh...no, actually, sick Isaac equalled lazy Isaac, probably sick Pearce equalled...tyrant, a dictator reborn, or something. After putting his violin down, he got up and slung the coat over one arm.

Matthias watched in mild fascination as Isaac actually went as far as to walk up behind Pearce, singlehandedly disrupting the conductor's infamous personal bubble, and draping it over his shoulders. The coat was too big for him, obviously.

"Unfortunately, we don't have a backup conductor," and that was true, if something happened to Isaac it wasn't like Matthias couldn't take over, "And you forget, I have a car, you don't...I'll live." He walked back to his seat, although the sight of Pearce wet was something his mind kept away to tantalize him with for another day.

"Besides, we're indoors now, aren't we?"

Isaac was about to start playing again when Pearce mentioned Bell. Great. He really wasn't in the mood to deal with Bell today, at all. But he just shrugged, "Fine."

(Matthias waited for the inevitable.)

Things didn't get better or worse. In fact, they strangely enough got surprising. It was a little secret between the small group of friends Rei had that the conductor very rarely got sick, but whenever he did, fell hard and tended to show a rather...different side. He didn't want to think about though. Humiliating memories were best left at home.

The surprise came when he felt something drape over his shoulders, causing him to jump slightly and look up. "...I can easily find a back up conductor for a day or two," Rei pointed out easily. "That's what would happen if I take a sick day, you'd get a replacement." It was a strange thing that seemed to connect the two days.

"But your coats going to be wet..." But the violinist had left, leaving only a glaring, frowning light haired male with a coat two or three sizes too big draped over his shoulders. He looked rather adorable really, but he turned around and closed the closet door, realizing that it would be rude to just shrug it off at this point.

That and his phone rang.

Answering it, Rei almost groaned to hear the peppy voice at the end. "Guess who got us all tickets to see a musical~!"

"York," Rei growled. "You know I have a concert--"

"Friday's merely the opening night for the musical silly. No one said anything about Saturday." Rei couldn't argue with that, only frowning as he realized that this wasn't going to be a good day at all.

"And we all know what this orchestra does with replacements, even ones that come referred by you," Isaac said, it was his subtle way of saying something else, except he couldn't say it. "Seriously, the London cold is nothing compared to this anyway. and it's going to dry." And Jesus Christ, it was just a coat. His head hurt.

Matthias watched him, "You sure you're okay?" What a coincidence, really, that both of them were feeling under the weather.

"I'm sure I'll be okay after ten hours more of sleep," not going to happen, he had work, and thing he was going to work hard forgetting about the fact that Bradley St. Ryan was in New York City. He played a few random bars across the strings and waited until Pearce had gotten off the phone before he asked.

"You wouldn't happen to have aspirin on you or anything, would you?" (Now, if Bell wasn't coming, Isaac might not have succumbed to taking prescription drugs, he hated them.) Desperate times called for desperate measures.

Though Pearce did look the type of popping headache pills.

Rei didn't mind musicals but he certainly wasn't in favor of them either. They were just a waste of time. Then again, most outings tended to be a waste of time in his eyes. Time that he could be using to work and get a few extra hours of sleep.

Or enough to remember to bring a bloody umbrella or check the weather once in a while. Maybe even both.

He hung up a minute or two later, while York was still in mid-sentence (which got him a really nasty message a few seconds after), before he nodded at the question.

"It's in my bag. Help yourself," he spoke before he walked to the stage and pushed the podium just a bit lower, a fact that irked him every time he did it. Which finally let him notice just how the coat didn't fit him. He'd have to take it off during rehearsal though, but he'd keep it on for now.

Maybe it was just paranoia talking, but if Isaac had been Pearce and someone like Isaac had been asking him for pills, he'd personally deliver the pills to keep Isaac always from his bag but hey. No complaints, and Isaac really wasn't the type to rifle through other people's stuff, anyway. "Oh, okay." He halfway took in Matthias' awed expression and hopped down to the auditorium.

Pearce kept his stuff in the last row, and after a moment of search, Isaac found the bottle. Funny, how long they'd come. He swallowed two dry, nearly choked, and returned to the stage.

Boy, was this day looking to be shitty or what?

Isaac heaved a sigh as he pressed a hand to his temple again, all he had to do was brave three hours, stay away from Bell, go home and sleep. He really should have called in drunk today. Except--

"Sit concertmaster for the first half today, I'll just handle the solo, Matthias." He said finally, and Matthias nodded. (At least Isaac knew when he was beat.) Unlike someone else, who looked so awkward in Isaac's too-big coat.

Rei really wasn't thinking it threw when he just offered because he was too busy trying to wonder why in the world he would ever want to go to a musical. On a Saturday of all days, why a bloody musical? He didn't want to deal with it so he looked around and hoped some more people trickled in.

Only about two or three had.

With nothing better to do than wait until people got there, Rei decided to think, which was never really a safe idea. He thought on the current problem on his life, and that involved yesterday in the park. Well, first things first, Rei would definitely have to write 'too tall' as a con. Which brought into the whole factor of did height really matter? Which led to a whole different topic entirely that involved a bed that Rei wasn't quite ready to delve into.

By the time his thoughts were organized however, almost everyone had arrived which made Rei look over the soaking, grumbling members of his orchestra. It was then that the fabled 'apocalypse' had arrived as he coughed and brought upon a silence to the group as he slowly took off the coat and let it hang over his arm.

"Considering the weather today and..." He paused, taking out his phone as he received a rather sly text from Joshua. "Other circumstances, we'll be ending rehearsal early today."

Did the 'other circumstances' include a hungover Isaac? Probably not, he couldn't imagine Pearce showing him this kind of mercy, besides Pearce hadn't even given him an answer yet. It was a weekday, but Isaac had a bad habit of overestimating himself and having it come back to bite him in the ass. But whatever the case, he was relieved, and everyone else looked downright amazed. Shocked, a few broken jaws here and there.

Rehearsal never ended early. Ever.

Maybe hell froze over now. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Patricia looking between him and the coat. She loved that coat, because it represented a whole lot of posh. And what was it doing on Pearce's arm...?

Whatever. Not going to think about that now. Getting through rehearsal just got a little bit more bearable. Maybe. Since it was a short rehearsal, both of them agreed to switch seats again and Isaac stood.

"Let's tune up."

Rei didn't bother explaining himself. He hung the coat on a nearby chair, ignoring the few eyes that dared for even a moment to glance at the clothes clinging to him. He merely organized his notes as he tuning process began.

A horrible sound of wrong keys, all blending together into chaos before a single correct note blared forth and began straightening the mess until it seemed practically flawless. It was a miracle on the ear, how a sound so disorganized could turn into something so beautiful. It was the same with music, except they needed countless notes to produce such a feeling. It was a process of nightmares.

Once tuning finished, Rei immediately got out a piece, announced it and watched every pair of eyes that was glued and waiting for his signal.

He started like always, giving the beat so no one would be lost before cuing in and beginning what would, for the first time in his career, be a short rehearsal.

York would have a field day if he heard.

Maybe because it was the fact that it was a short rehearsal, everyone's concentration was up today, although Isaac wasn't completely able to forget about Bradley St. Ryan and the stupid musical and the fact that he was hungover on a weekday. What the fuck. If it was a short rehearsal, did that mean Bell was still coming in?

Isaac found himself hoping not. But he had to stop thinking about that for a moment as his Dvorak concerto went over flawlessly, violin wasn't just a skill, it was reflex, something he could do even while not quite sober.

All he really wanted to do was for this whole bloody thing to be over and so he could crawl back to sleep after drinking some more. Isaac really was in his fair way to becoming an alcoholic. Bloody? Bloody hell, even his British tics were coming back. What the bl--what the hell.

It's a short rehearsal, he reminded himself with gritted teeth. He hates classical music, he won't show up here, and you hate musicals, you won't show up there.

Case closed. End of story. Isaac was more relieved than usual when break rolled around.

As the majority of musicians left the room for some fresh air, Rei walked over to Isaac as he extended his hand to give back the coat. "You're not concentrating today," he pointed out rather wearily. It was an annoyance to him, though his mood had lightened considerably not that his clothing was damp, not wet.

"Pull through with another half hour Isa--Langley."

It was such an innocent slip that it surprised him, though he tried to not let it show as he merely shook his head and walked off after returning the coat and looking at his stand. Bell wouldn't be coming, it was why he didn't bother announcing the fact to the entire orchestra.

Coming for half an hour would be a waste of the violinists time, so it was best to just hold it off for today and make up for it tomorrow. They wouldn't enjoy the four hour practice, but it was probably going to be a miracle to them that they only got a two hour one today.

That they would end practice a whole hour early.
