Everyone was in their seats surprisingly and as it turned out, it didn't look like there would be any problems. So as the warning was addressed, he picked up his baton and the icy, controlled persona returned immediately, as if he had placed on a mask. "Follow my beat, don't go making up your own, especially at B, D, F and I," he added, remembering how various members had tried to 'tap it'. Maybe if they used their fingers to play and eyes to watch there wouldn't be such a problem. So he closed his eyes, tapping the speed a few times on the podium, (that he had to bloody push down earlier), before signaling the start. It was then that he realized that this was going to be a very long day. |

Hah! Isaac was right after all, Pearce did have a baton up his ass, unfortunately, thinking about that had him thinking about the other thing that Pearce said last night, which wasn't exactly safe, given that the man was right there looking like a storm cloud about to implode on himself. Right. He raised his violin and ignored the look that Matthias was giving him. A look that said: I told you so. Because Matthias did know, and Isaac knew better. Pearce just had that baton up his ass, it wasn't like one night with Isaac was going to change all that, unless it was really...a night like that. So he wasn't worried. So there. As it were, the first half of the rehearsal went rather well, at least, Isaac thought so as he picked up his pencil and made a few more notes. Pearce had a point, if he was this pissed off all the time during rehearsals, they'd be really productive. Well...time to test the waters. Isaac settled his violin back into his case and looked up at his conductor, because...well, Bell had said he was insecure about his height, right? So Isaac would sit. "Is everything all right?" He was concertmaster, if he wasn't asking as someone with an interest, he should at least ask as concertmaster. Win-win situation. Score one for Isaac. |

The back row had practically been asleep the whole time and was bringing Rei's bad mood to a full circle of annoyance. He was tempted to throw his baton and let it hit a few of them but held back the reaction as he let a sigh leave his lips. He wanted to go home strangely enough. Specifically back to this list, that was going to be facing edit number four. "Just fabulous," he shot out without thinking before he raised a hand and rubbed at his neck, noticing how it was tighter than usual. "I went to bed late. Got about five hours of sleep." He had almost made himself feel better with the thought that Joshua was in the same boat. He wasn't though. He only started work at one that day. Not at eight in the bloody morning. He'd never been a morning person, not to mention that he tended to have lower blood pressure. It made him tense and upset. Though they did get more accomplished as he snapped and pointed out even the smallest mistake that strangely enough resulted in a mass improvement on overall things. Not it was just the minor details. It was always the minor details. |

"Oh." Well. There wasn't much he could say to that, really, except maybe tell him that he'd stood under the cold shower for thirty minutes and used up all the cold water. Not that Matthias really cared, he wasn't the cold shower kind of guy to begin with. But looking up at Pearce now he really...well, did feel sorry for him. Although he wasn't exactly sure what he felt sorry about. Was he the one that inspired the five hours of sleep? The thought made him just slightly giddy. Although the way he rubbed at his neck didn't escape Isaac and he knew he couldn't risk a repeat of last night. But still. Walking around all wound up like that wasn't healthy, and it wasn't because Isaac wanted to seduce him, either. "Why don't you just go home?" He suggested, "I mean, as far as I know, you haven't missed a rehearsal in the two and half years that I've been here...take a sick day, go home and sleep. Matthias and I can just run sectionals or whatever." They were more productive like this, granted, but Isaac was a little afraid of what would happen if Pearce really did just snap. All bets were off then. "And you should probably see someone to get your neck fixed, that's probably where half your headaches are coming from." The other half came from Isaac. He hadn't forgotten that. Which was why he didn't offer himself as an option. Probably wasn't helpful. |

The suggestion was so strange and caring that it took Rei a moment to understand it. It didn't help that he let out a yawn seconds after, his hand held up to hide his opened mouth. "Conductors don't get sick days," he spoke plainly, fully aware that his work ethic would lead him to an early grave. Though the idea was tempting. Very, very tempting. Enough to make him aware that there wasn't anything wrong with it. He didn't want to leave and make everyone think he skipped (though it wasn't likely they would). "...But I'll agree on sectionals and letting you two run that. I'll just sit in the back of the hall." That way the fear would keep them playing well but he would be able to rest his eyes somewhat at least. That and he had a feeling he'd fall asleep on the subway. "...My necks fine," he spoke, raising a brow that clearly left no room for argument. He was not going to be thinking about last night...or the last time he went to get his neck checked out. His first and last time...never again would he put himself through such humiliation. Mainly because it was York's grand scheme to get the bundle of nerves relaxed, he was once sent to a spa that specialized in neck and backs. In a rather embarrassing fit that had him avoid that entire general area, he had moaned and gotten hard, got his masseuse hard and didn't feel like remembering the rest. He preferred a pained neck. |

"Esa-Pekka Solonen took two sick days off last season from the LA phil." Isaac said, "I've got friends, I checked." And it wasn't an accident that he just happened to have that shiny little fact right there. "But whatever, suit yourself." He seemed to have noticed that what he had just suggested was a bit too personal, but hey, he was supposed to be interested in Pearce, right? So he'd go with it. Besides, the man looked like he needed a break. What kept him up so late last night? Not Isaac, Isaac was being safe the whole week for a reason. "Neck's probably not fine if it gives you migraines, but whatever again, suit yourself." Maybe he didn't even need a therapist if Pearce just took some time off to relax. But maybe that word only existed in French for him. Which was rather pathetic. Again, how did he even manage to live like that? That seemed to be the question of the day. Isaac would have said something else too, but he checked himself. It looked like he'd said enough, and at least Pearce was listening to half of his suggestions. He meant a quarter. |

"It's highly unlikely that the majority of my migraines come from my neck," Rei pointed out, obviously ignoring the little quip about the LA phil. He did need a day off. In fact, he needed quite a few days off and a very long relaxing trip in fact. France sounded nice. But he couldn't think about that, pushing the thought forcibly aside as he decided that it wasn't wise to reveal to Isaac the embarrassing story behind his neck. York had laughed so hard when he realized what his present had turned into that he fell off his chair and sprained his wrist. He did not need a repeat of that. Of both situation. He rather liked Isaac as his concertmaster because recently it made him focus. Then again a few things had changed...like yesterday. But they'd stay separate, even if Rei couldn't help but wonder what details would be changing. They never saw each other outside of rehearsal except for yesterday, so it left him confused. Thankfully though, the break was close to ending and he could announce the sectionals and do some light work in the back. |

(Isaac could have told him that, except that would probably just fall on deaf ears) so he just blinked at him, all nonchalance, mostly. "I didn't say that, but it's plausible that at least some of your migraines come from the fact that you're naturally tense," noting the time, he picked up his case to get his violin out again, "The rest of your migraines come from me, I haven't forgotten that." Although he wasn't sure of how things were right now, he was being...well, not so bratty, but probably that was putting Pearce on the edge. A nice Isaac was...well, a rather dangerous Isaac. But still, it was nice to pass a rehearsal where they weren't at each other's throats, really. But it was time, and everyone, mindful of the conductor's mood, trickled back in without much complaint. Or at least...so that Matthias could see. As he took his seat again, he noted that Isaac hadn't left his and... Well...looked a little too pleased. He would have said smug, except the whole expression that his friend wore was...well, just worrisome. Maybe for Pearce's own safety...Matthias was almost tempted to warn him. Except there was that little snag about the whole thing sort of being Matthias' idea. So maybe not... |

Rei frowned immediately, wrinkles lining the middle of his brows. "I am not tense." Ironic and easily put down was his denial but he stuck to it. He wasn't tense...just stressed. With an extremely sensitive back and troublesome nerves. There was nothing that had to do with migraines there. "Though I have to admit that you don't give me most of my migraines. York and Bell do." At least the later was doing it recently. He didn't even want to think about the vibration in the pocket. It was probably York, who had been talking to Bell, who would be demanded to hear what happened and how he can even consider such a brat. Though at the moment the rather calm and almost caring Isaac was the one making him confused. It put him on edge. Which wasn't good for his nerves...which were bloody fine. Everyone came back surprisingly on time. Rei didn't even bother calling for attention as he noticed that the moment he took a breath, the entire room went to a complete silence, as if expecting a horrible lecture. "We're going to proceed to have sectionals for the rest of the rehearsal. I expect each sectional leader to make sure every mistake mentioned in your score and such is corrected and allows for as flawless as possible of a performance of the piece by the next day. Everyone is to go to their usual places." It was blunt and to the point but the shuffling movement began immediately before Rei sighed and rubbed at his neck a bit more. Isaac was crazy. His neck was fine... |

"Sure you're not, but you've always been good at that," Self-denial, that was... "It's actually something about you that I admire." He would have said 'liked', but Isaac liked to think he was subtle, although he was wrong most times. Besides, he didn't want to be blatantly in front of other people...that, and Isaac had fun trying to prove him wrong every time. "Oh?" But Isaac had to blink at that, "I'm glad to see you've changed your mind then," when they had lunch, Isaac could have sworn that Rei said that he was responsible for half his migraines, while he'd miss having that title on his shoulders, it was nice to see the responsibility was finally passed on to someone else. Joshua Bell and Nick York of all people. Isaac's eyes followed his conductor off the stage. Maybe this would play out to his full advantage, after all. Finally, Matthias snapped his fingers in front of Isaac's face, "Focus." Plenty of time for fun later, and even his spine grew warm at what could have been. Isaac stood up and took his place at the head of both sections, Patricia was looking at him funny. Was he giving something away? Whatever, "Let's start at letter I, whoever plays a D-sharp in measure three will be buying drinks." That was always a great threat. |

Walking off the stage rather calmly before heading to the very back of the hall, where in the middle of the rows of seats was a single desk (for the rare group that was being judged on their performance in this hall). Rei's things were already there, one of his many copies to ensure that he would never lose anything. He sat with a bit of a sigh before letting his ears hear the sound of Isaac's voice begin the string section. It made him wonder why he stayed here. Before it was to make sure Isaac wouldn't be screwing around...but now it was a bit different. Almost as if he'd be able to find some peace and quiet. He didn't think on it further though, resting his elbow on the table when his head nestled into his palm, letting out a wide yawn that made him think for just a few seconds on sleeping. Just for a bit. No one would have to know... He couldn't argue the thought as he leaned back into the chair, crossing his arms in mock thought as he attempted to keep his eyes open and realize that no matter how much he wanted to, he was still at rehearsal. He hadn't left yet nor excused himself. He hadn't...but it was too late. Before Rei could realize it, he had drifted off, looking as if he was in deep thought. Though it must have been a good thing to think of, as a calm, relaxed expression covered his features and even the smallest of smiles. |

"And...Walton, the next round of drinks are on you, not that anyone is exactly surprised, so..." Isaac glanced towards the giant clock on the stand, the clock had to be there in your face because most of the conductors tended to go over. "And seeing as how it's exactly time, you're all free to go." Speaking of conductors...habitually, Isaac turned his head over as everyone else busied packing up. Usually Rei would have a few helpful words along the lines of 'practice or I will send you all to merry hell.' but today, there wasn't quite anything. Interesting, either he was too deep in thought regarding his current situation or he was... Sleeping? Isaac made short work of packing up his violin and slung the case over his shoulder. Matthias was watching him, but made no move to follow. Whatever. Indeed, Rei Pearce...was asleep, and caught completely off guard. Isaac wasn't quite sure what he could make of that...but the man looked oddly peaceful...almost beautiful. He could have done the dishonorable thing and went for the back of the neck again, but he merely brushed a hand through the older man's hair, feeling the strands under his fingers. "Wake up, rehearsal's done." |

Rei had dreamt of nothing really. He hadn't been asleep long enough to venture into the world of dreams, his dark lashes merely resting against his cheeks as his chest fell with his breath. His face was even and calm, no hint of stress visible as even the wrinkles he tended to show from frowning were invisible to the eye. He was relaxed. So relaxed that when the fingers went through his hair, he merely opened his eyes slowly before another yawn left him. He covered it slowly as he blinked, glancing up to see Isaac. Then it all hit him. Rei's eyes widened as he looked around and glanced at his watch. Shit. He had fallen asleep. He swore as he glanced at the unfinished work in front of him. "...I...I wasn't sleeping," he argued rather pathetically, though the light blush and obvious event seconds before argued that. "I was just resting my eyes." There. Reasonable. "Anything specific I should know about?" |

[Random thought, since we brought in Joshua Bell...what if Hilary Hahn couldn't make it and Bell replaced her or something? Makes for interesting interactions XD] Sometimes, Isaac thought Pearce got a little pathetic. "It's time to stop resting your eyes then," he rephrased, "Rehearsal's over, and...besides Walton owing everyone in the section a round of drinks, you didn't miss anything big. I've mostly fixed everything...so." He shrugged, as if it was nothing. And...well, Isaac didn't take anything seriously, and he still had to keep that image up. "We should be all right for opening night." Although...well, Pearce could sleep like that, which was sort of amazing to Isaac because he needed to be completely relaxed before resting, although there was no hint of stress that he could see right now... Isaac stuck his hands inside his pockets. When he turned around, he could see that Matthias was waiting for him. Well, time to prove a thing or two. "Want a ride back? Matthias won't care." And it wasn't like Isaac would do stuff to him in the car with Matthias present. So...win win situation, right? |

((Most definitely. Bell the double agent will make another appearance!)) Nodding as it sounded like everything was in order, Rei forgot his earlier lie as he reached up and stretched his arms before rotating his wrists a few times and glancing back at his notes. God he had a bit of work to do. The papers he stared at slowly began to form themselves into lists of things he needed to do, things he could have done during those few extra hours he used to sleep instead. It wasn't bloody fair. But he didn't argue on it because a rather interesting proposal was presented to him. He was tempted to say no, as reminders from the night before warned him that twice in the same car would bring back memories that might bend his rationalization. Thankfully though, Matthias was quickly brought in. Which meant he could sit silently in the back and just go open his own business. Like a taxi ride that was free. "...Sure," he finally replied, taking the papers and straightening them out before putting them in their usual brief case, baton already safely inside. |
