Rei looked at Isaac, breathing in fresh air deeply before pausing. "...Alice might be watching," he spoke calmly, smiling lightly and waving to the girl who grinned back and continued playing. "So don't misinterpret my volume. I don't want her to hear."

And with that, the lid was mildly taken off.

"Why the hell did you invite me Isaac?" Rei spoke, eyes flashing. "I don't believe any of that conductor and concertmaster bonding crap that you unloaded, not to mention any of this so called 'high respect' you have for me. You've goofed off for most of your two years and don't think that a fucking week will change that and give you the right to spout out respect. If I remember correctly, you were the ass whip who got that other conductor and tried to replace me once, though you realized that perhaps the baton up my ass is useful for getting a bunch of lazy twenty year olds to think with their hands rather than their crotches."

He went on for a bit. He rambled more on how he didn't understand a single thought or action, how Isaac aggravated him completely and that he didn't believe for a moment that his little scolding speech had changed him or caused the whole thing. He finished finally, panting and cheeks flushed from the sudden release of frustration.

He brought the cigarette to his lips, inhaling deeply before blowing out. "...Your turn."

Pearce didn't need volume. The words were enough to make Isaac wince. But even as he winced, he noted a couple of things, as he was scolded, he was 'Isaac' and he was not 'Langley', although Isaac mostly chalked that one up to an accident and a slip of tongue. He wasn't going to get so lucky. And not a lot of things made Isaac wince. Secondly, the fact that Pearce could rant at him...like that for longer than he expected, must have meant that Isaac was under Pearce's skin, and he didn't like him there. He wanted him out.

Touche. Isaac was going to stay there.

He sucked in a long breath of his own and let it out...his turn. Right.

"First things first, do you always smoke in front of your niece? Okay, in my own defense, that was a year and a half ago, I was a kid and it was...mostly a joke, and besides, what better way to tell him he can't conduct than to pit him next to you?" (Leave it to Isaac to play the joke on both sides). "But..."

Make it sincere, honest, be stubborn. Right, words of wisdom from Joshua Bell.

"Look, there's no way that I can conjure up an explanation that will satisfy you, so you're just going make do with what I have, okay?" And here he was apologizing again, apologies naturally made Isaac feel vulnerable. "I do respect you, because you're so much better at the things I want to be good at. And it's hard for me to respect people, yes, I go out of my way to make people feel horrible because that's the way I deal...I just..."

Okay, so maybe this was a little too honest.

"So maybe it wasn't completely you, but...I really was doing some thinking and, I really didn't want you to be...ticked at me. It was honestly nice before, when we had lunch. So...um," Isaac pursed his lips, "I'm sorry." (He wasn't going to say normal.)

It was mildly surprising that Isaac had stayed silent as Rei had unloaded the majority of his frustration. So Rei decided to return the favor and wait. It was turning out to be a bit harder than he imagined when the first thing mentioned was his smoking habit.

He had decided that, considering his luck, he was probably going to die young, and it was best that Alice learn that smoking kills. He had engraved it into her mind and she scolded and talked down everyone out of smoking, even her parents. Everyone except her beloved Uncle, a fact that not even he could explain to this day.

And mostly a joke his ass. Isaac looked down right upset that Rei had upstaged the conductor wannabe.

But he bit his lip, noticing how the cigarette was now practically gone and throwing it to the ground before stepping on it and ending the fire hazard in the making.

The apology though...was strange.

Rei paused though, thinking back to their lunch and part of their walk. Before...that, it had been nice. He didn't accept it quite yet though, a fatal question had been ignored.

"Why did you really invite me Isaac?" He spoke, eyeing his niece who had just been pulled off a tree she had been attempting to climb. She had managed to get a foot up into the air. "Don't give me that bonding excuse."

It was good for Alice to find out that smoking killed...right, that he could buy. But the fact that Rei would set himself up as a human example. Now that...wasn't quite so smart. But surely he didn't need to hear that from Isaac.

But even with Isaac's (infallible) charm, Pearce had remembered. And now Isaac was back to square one, having to explain what he really didn't want to because there was...really no suitable explanation for it. He wanted six grand, he wanted to see if he could do it. Those were all out. So he had...

Isaac sucked another breath and let it out. His eyes flickered to Alice not too far away, and then back to Pearce again.

"...I guess, I..." And now here he was feeling vulnerable for no excuse. "Look, the stuff I just said, I can't say lightly, and I don't say lightly. And I've said them to you. Who are you, that you make me say those things?" (That was a little too honest too, maybe, but Isaac ignored his conscience.) And maybe he was too used to telling the truth.

"I, um..." For the first time in a while, he felt like he was fumbling, and Isaac did not like it, at all. "I'm interested in you...maybe." (the maybe was tacked on as a truth.) Great, now he was going to lose his job and contract, and he was out six thousand dollars. He'd wanted to admit that when he was on good terms with Pearce...obviously, the powers that be had other plans.

...

That wasn't expected. That certainly wasn't expected at all. His eyes widened and he brought up a hand to rub at his neck. Isaac was interested in him? For heavens sake, why and how? It didn't seem possible but there he was, honest and nervous.

The chip the size of a boulder had confessed to him. In a park. While his niece was playing.

His cheeks grew pink immediately, the light haired man growing shy as he wondered how to respond. "Oh," was his clever response. He didn't know just what to say. So he'd honor the route Isaac took and went for not thinking and just being honest.

"I'm uh...flattered," he spoke, his blush growing as he shifted his weight from one foot to the other. "That explains...things."

Somewhat. He didn't want to think about it or apply it caught yet, giving a small laugh as his nerves got the better of him. "Sorry for running my mouth off like than then La--...Isaac."

It was much, much too honest. But there, it was out in the open and here he was...confessing to Pearce in a park. While Pearce had been raging at him just minutes before. But as soon as the confession left his mouth, Isaac looked away again. There was no more yelling after that, no more demands that he explain himself there was only...

Pearce looking shocked and flustered. Blushing. The sight was almost wondrous and Isaac allowed himself to look after a while.

He'd done it. A wave of relief washed over him, and he wasn't even thinking about the bet (first warning sign?) He was...

Well, typical Pearce, saying that that it explained things and...that he was...sorry?

Isaac blinked. That was certainly not unexpected on his end. "You've nothing to apologize for," besides, Pearce probably didn't run his mouth off enough, which was why he was a bundle of nerves all the time.

"Although I wish you didn't make me...blurt it out like that...yeah." Because now Isaac felt awkward, and he didn't like feeling awkward, it was almost bad as feeling inferior. An attempted kiss or a gesture of affection might have been appropriate here, except...well, there were kids nearby. And...he wasn't really--

Rei shook his head, the frown on his face looking rather ridiculous as his skin remained flush from embarrassment and nervousness. "I just complained about you and unknowingly forced a confession out of you. Off course I'm sorry."

That came out wrong. At least the second part did. "Shit, I don't mean that I'm sorry that you confessed...just that I forced it out of you." Wait, that was sounding like he felt the same way.

He wasn't good at these sort of things, the whole emotional aspects of interacting with others. "I-I mean..." He trailed off, his confusion growing as he raised a hand to lightly ruffle his hair. "...I don't know what I mean."

He felt defeated. For once, Rei was at a complete loss at what needed to be done at the moment. He had easily shot down people before, but this seemed a bit different. He merely assumed it was because his niece was occasionally throwing glances at the two of them.

"I don't know what to say...Isaac," he ended, reminding himself out of consideration to use the mans first name. "I never exactly thought...I mean, we always..."

Exactly what was Isaac seeing to spur on this confession. Then again, there was that little 'maybe' attached.

It was Pearce's turn to fumble now, and Isaac felt slightly better...although that didn't excuse his own awkwardness. It seemed that neither of them were very good at this whole business of just...apologizing and admitting things. Maybe they--don't go there. He told himself sternly as hands slipped casually in his pockets.

Of everyone, why Pearce? Who was constantly, constantly stalling him at every turn, making his job awkward. And of course the man had to force his hand too early and he was going to get shot down. After all, Pearce had no reason....

He made valid points, he'd never---

Was there a way to salvage this?

"It's one of those things, I told you, I'm a jealous person, you do wonders for my inferiority complex you don't even know. I just...wanted everything that you seem to have. So somewhere down the line I...I guess. I don't know. But I have a bad habit of chasing after people and things I can't have, so." Isaac shrugged, "My own fault."

The shifting of blame failed to work, as Rei continued biting at his lip, that adorable nervous habit coming back completely as he wondered just what to say.

He certainly wasn't head over heels in love with Isaac. He hadn't even looked at him that way because in his mind, he just wasn't exactly an option. Now things were changing a little bit, where the violinist was definitely an option and even opening his arms to the offer. All he needed to figure out was how he truly felt for the male in under a minute before this grew even more awkward.

"I'm flattered but..."

But what? It wasn't like Rei hated the man. He was actually pleasant to talk to and now that he had a second look, was pretty good looking. Work might be a bit awkward but they could draw the line. But Rei always had a bad habit of being swept up in the moment and saying things he didn't mean.

He didn't love Isaac but he surely didn't hate him. "I...I don't know how I feel about you." It was a strange comment, not exactly shooting down the other but not accepting him either. "Can I have some time to think about it?"

Pearce was flattered. That in and of itself was a good sign, it wasn't the best sign, granted, but it was more than he could hope for now that his hand was forced much earlier than he planned. Pearce didn't know how he felt about him...needed some time to think about it...those, well, those were good signs, right?

If Isaac could look into a mirror right now, he'd probably hate his own expression, how hopeful, like he really was dependent on his conductor's decision. But that wasn't important right now, the most important thing at the moment was--Isaac wasn't getting shot down. He had a chance still, the bet and the money was still on the table.

(And yes, this was about a bet.)

Isaac looked over at his conductor for a very long time, feeling warm again, although he had no idea where the warmth came from. Finally, he nodded and allowed himself a faint smile. "I can't ask you to do anything more than that, can't I, Rei?" And strange, now Rei was getting easier to say than Pearce, more bad signs? "Um, yeah, take all the time you need." (Hopefully it didn't take longer than a month. But then things weren't really going Isaac's way today.)

It was strange to hear his name said to freely. It sent shivers down his spine, the soft smile and gentle atmosphere slowly getting to his brain. It didn't help that it was fall, the light breeze messing up his hair as he desperately willed the blush off his face.

Alice chose that moment to make her grand reentrance.

"Uncle, look," she started, running toward the light haired man with joy in her eyes as he held up...what in the world was that? "It's a worm!"

Well, there went the moment and his blush. He reached forward immediately, bending down to be eye level. "Now, now, how would you like it if I put you on a stick and...never mind. Bad example," he spoke, shaking his head as he remembered last Thanksgiving. "His family probably misses him."

Alice nodded, putting down the poor creature before glancing between the two men. Her innocent eyes only smiled brightly as she grasped both their hands and demanded to continue their walk.

Isaac was about to say something else and then excuse himself, after all, if Pearce--erm, Rei wanted to think about it, he was probably going to think better without Isaac there trying to influence him. But then Alice chose that exact moment to make a beeline towards them with a warm on a stick. Isaac looked on at the scene with mild interest as his conductor convinced her to put the worm down. His nephews were nothing like that...but then again, nephews were nothing like nieces.

And then she had to take his hand again, which made leaving kind of...not possible, since it was apparently important to make a good impression on Alice. So they walked like that, not speaking for a while because Isaac was still a little bit shocked at what had really happened.

He'd really 'confessed' and Rei said he'd...think about it.

It was nice to have that effect on someone, especially someone as immovable as Rei Pearce.

"I wish I had a niece," Isaac said finally, just for the sake of saying something, because he didn't want Pearce to think too hard, really. He might stumble on something that was bad for Isaac's case, "Nephews are a handful."

Sometimes, Alice was quite resourceful and useful to avoiding people and going on his own way. Unfortunately, a certain violinist who managed to somehow win her favor owner, (it was probably saying she had a pretty name, she was always weak for compliments), and left them looking like a rather awkward family.

Which was not helping Rei's thinking process in the slightest.

Alice seemed off in her own world though, not quite paying attention and missing the conversation that was going to proceed above. "I don't have any nephews yet, though I will in a few months."

He wondered for a moment, his thoughts changed as he stared at Alice. A small part hinted that the topic change was to get him to stop thinking and looking for a flaw. A larger part said to just accept it and move on.

"Are they that bad?"

"What? Nephews?"

Isaac almost shuddered as he risked a glance over, maybe it was all right to make idle conversation and pretend nothing was wrong. They had Alice between them if either ever felt the need to run far, far away. Isaac didn't want to run, but maybe the same thing couldn't be said for Pearce. He almost wanted to get through his conductor's head and see what was going on. Was Pearce freaking the hell out on him?

Quite possibly.

He thought for a moment.

"Uh, you wouldn't think so if you had three of them constantly destroying the house, I really don't know how my brother manages." But then, considering his brother was the oldest of four kids, maybe he had plenty of practice that way.

Thanks to them, Isaac was never going to consider kids, but Pearce didn't need to know that part. "I have one niece, actually, but I never see her, I see my nephews more often."

Rei paused, realizing that Isaac had a point. The most trouble Alice had done was...well that wasn't exactly fine either. "This little trouble maker here decided to repaint my walls once," Rei spoke, sending a look at the girl as he merely smiled back innocently.

"With crayon," he spoke, frowning as he remembered the horrible sight as he woke up. "Bubblegum pink crayon. Have never taken a nap while watching over her ever again."

Crayon was a lot easier to remove in the movies. It was not easy, especially when she had successfully covered a lot of his wall. She didn't get all of it, but the vast scribbles were enough to empty his wallet for quite a bit. "I'd almost prefer her destroying the couch."

Which she had also done. Twice.

"...Maybe it's just their age, not their gender?" Rei suggested, sending a small smile as his mind had successfully been diverted from their shy confession seconds ago.
