...Well. That was so Pearce. And Isaac could have told him so. If Pearce's anger grew and manifested...Isaac was going to be in a shitload of trouble. That much was obvious and Joshua had a point. And he didn't like failure, and the fact that there was a chance for him to turn this day around after all...that looked promising. Swallowing his ego and calling Joshua Bell had been a good move. Maybe Isaac would forgive himself for it later. "Point taken." Isaac sat up again, he was suddenly exhausted, actually. "But...even if the fact doesn't occur to him that I have your number, I'm still obligated to explain why I"m...there, at the same time that he's...there. It's still a little too circumstantial." And Isaac was perfectly capable of coming up with his own explanations...but the whole point of this exercise was not to seem more intelligent than he had already let on to be. So better to let Joshua take the blame for this one. |

No matter how tempted Joshua was to state that Isaac was clever and could easily pull something out of his ass, he didn't. "It's Central Park. Say that wherever you went after you saw Pearce gave you a headache and you needed some fresh air." He snapped all of a sudden, grinning. "He loves autumn you know. Walking around to get some fresh air during autumn in Central Park of all places will make sense to him." "He'd be more concerned with the fact that you are there rather than how you got there. Be light, honest and meaningful and you'll do fine." He was tempted to suggest the idea of a back massage but stopped as he remembered he listed it as a dislike. Ah, perhaps it wasn't best to share it. At least Isaac didn't know just how sensitive the neck and back was for Rei. |

Maybe Isaac did know, but maybe the fact that Pearce refused to admit that he liked it was common knowledge to both of them. Maybe. Because he'd never had anyone properly loosen up his back and his neck before, and Isaac remembered that warm spread to his groin and was tempted for a repeat. And now with Joshua Bell's blessing, no less. The guy was good, Isaac had to give him that, he'd pretty much come up with the same explanation that Isaac would have if Isaac had been left to his own devices. And he did mention Central Park earlier. Chalk one up for fate. "I hadn't thought of that...but yeah, that makes sense." The day was suddenly looking up for him again. "Thanks, I owe you one, we should do lunch and drinks sometime, I'll keep you posted." His pride was thoroughly wounded by this conversation, but at least he had a direction to go in. He hung up then, and burst out of the practice room looking so happy that Matthias said, "Did you have phone sex with him or something?" "What? No!" He didn't even want to know how that was going to go down, "Anyway...Aunt Lily gave me a headache so...I'm off to Central Park, I'll see you." |

"Good luck," Joshua chimed as he heard the line come to a close. Ah, sweet sweet irony. Life could be so amusing sometimes. He couldn't help but be curious to just how far Isaac was filling to go to this cause, the cause of Rei. Really though, no intentions of getting into his pants? As if. He was a twenty-six year old male, it was highly unlikely he wanted a pure high school type relationship. So he went back to his pasta, pouring out the boiling water and slowly add in the sauce as he hummed a certain trill in his mind. Rei on the other hand, had a distinct feeling that perhaps a third cigarette that day wasn't going to be such a bad idea. However, with eyes that watched his every move, he gave a firm glance to the girl. "Cigarettes will...?" He hinted, waiting for her to finish. "Kill you one day slowly!" She repeated flawlessly as he sat on his lap before frowning. "Then why does Unc smoke?" "It's been a weird week," he admitted before planting a light kiss on her forehead. "But it's better now because Uncle gets to see you." She giggled and nodded, going back to her story of just what made her very worried for a certain pile of leaves. |

"Why do I get the feeling you're up to no good?" "Because I'm not...?" Okay, so a regular twenty-six year old man would probably still have an insatiable sex drive, but...it wasn't as if Isaac was so deprived that he'd go after Pearce. He was still a little bit iffy on this whole idea, but it was somewhat soothing that he could come right back and blame Joshua Bell for giving him bad advice. And Central Park was nice in autumn. He parked the car and sucked in a deep breath. The fact that this plan was Joshua Bell-approved...what did that even mean? Isaac was still the one that was executing it. He walked aimlessly for a couple of minutes before he noticed--Pearce, and a young girl. He was too far to hear what they were saying, but just watching the whole scene made him feel strangely warm, and it wasn't warmth to the groin either, it was just...warmth. And to think that Pearce, could inspire this sort of warmth in Isaac... Now or never, all or nothing. Isaac took a step forward. |

Alice was just in the middle of explaining to Rei exactly what the problem was with the mixed colored leaves and how they needed to just embrace themselves and accept their one chosen color when a certain violinist came to his sight. Hell no. What the hell was Isaac doing in Central Park...and walking right toward them? The girl in his lap seemed to notice his lack of attention immediately, turning around to look at the dark haired stranger who was moving toward them. "Is he your friend Unca?" "Well, not exa--Alice!" With that she jumped off his lap, running toward the violinist and smiling up at him. "'Ello mister," she spoke rather innocently, not noticing how Rei had groaned and sunk ever so slightly in his seat before pushing himself up and making his way toward the pair. "My name is Alice, what's yours?" Rei didn't know if he should be lifting her up and scolding her about talking to strangers but knew he couldn't. He had to focus on staying angry and calm all at the same time... Curse fate. "What do you want Langley?" |

While Pearce cursed fate, if it was possible to buy Joshua Bell lunch and drinks for however long he lived, Isaac would have done so. He was actually sort of dreading the confrontation...but to think that the niece...Alice? had broken the ice between them, or no, Pearce still looked like a storm cloud, but...at least Isaac had somewhere to go. And it wasn't like Isaac was monumentally bad with kids or anything, his older brother's kids loved him, but maybe that was because Uncle Isaac usually brought along suitcases full of presents to buy the children's favor. He had no such present for Alice...and as if he suddenly realized how much he towered over her, he bent down and smiled, ignoring Pearce for the moment. "Alice, huh? That's a pretty name for a pretty girl. I wish I had a pretty name like that, my name is Isaac, but your uncle likes to call me Langley." (Somehow, that felt important to mention, since Pearce's calling him Isaac was like pulling teeth.) He straightened back up, "I...well, Aunt Lily drove me absolutely nuts, so I sort of wanted to walk around here to cool off...I didn't expect to see you though." Playing innocent now was good. Besides, the niece was still paying attention, Pearce couldn't do anything to him. |

Rei frowned, not happy at all to the silent nudge that was given. It was however, nice to know that Langley would bend down so he could be eye level with his niece...who seemed rather tall for her age. It only made him take in a deeper breath from the cancerous stick as he grumbled slightly. "Thanks mister Isaac," Alice chirped before turning to her uncle with a confused gaze. "Why does Unc call minster Isaac Lan...Lan..." She frowned, having trouble with the word. "Langley," Rei corrected just by habit before eyeing the man. Well, it certainly was one hell of a coincidence. "...Leaving Derringer alone, are we?" He paused, knowing he couldn't be rude. Not with Alice watching his every move. Especially as she stared up at him with her shining eyes full of hope, her question ringing silently. "...Fine," he sighed, mumbling on how he couldn't believe he was asking this. "La--Isaac. Want to walk with us?" Alice seemed to brighten up at the words, pulling at the violinists hand excitedly. "Ple~ease mister!" Great. Just great. This day couldn't get any better. It wasn't until this moment that Rei wondered if some greater being was working against him. |

"Just Isaac is fine, I'm not that old yet, Alice..." And that sounded weird, especially he had patronized Joshua Bell over the phone with the same title. But...apparently he seemed to have made a good impression on this Alice. Score one. The bending down really did do the trick, it made kids think that you were less threatening, maybe. Uh. Matthias. Right. Isaac rubbed the back of his head somewhat sheepishly, "His aunt not mine? And besides, he's the one with the saintly patience." And then he didn't have to do anything, Pearce was inviting him on his own...with prodding from his niece of course. And Pearce had switched back to 'Isaac', Isaac's face was perhaps a little too bright than he would have hoped, as if Pearce saying his given name really meant something to him. He looked between the two of them, the shining hopeful face of Alice grabbing his hand, and...Pearce, looking like he wanted to jump off a cliff. "Sure..." He still made sure that his voice sounded a bit hesitant, "That'd be nice." (Although...did every kid just jump at every stranger they see?) Well, whatever, this worked nicely in his favor. Isaac gave Alice's hand a squeeze. "Where are we going?" |

Alice held his hand quite happily, pulling him toward her uncle so she could happily hold both their hands, humming to herself lightly. "Just walkin' silly! That's the point of fall," she spoke before looking up at her uncle. "Right?" Rei nodded, making the girl laugh happily as she continued humming her song. "Are you sure you don't have somewhere to be?" He asked as he walked slowly, not bothering to look at the man as he tried to keep that careful balance of disconnect for Isaac and caring for Alice up. Fate was always a rather tricky mistress to him. It made sense that she would throw the number one disliked person and number one loved person in his company all at once. Rei couldn't help but hope that Alice not like him just for a few extra moments. The normal thing was bothering him...and remembering just how tall Isaac was. God, did he chug milk in his spare time? |

Right. Like Uncle, like niece. He forgot about that. It was just that point had sort of been overlooked by everything else. "I see." It just occurred to him that Alice had tugged him closer to Pearce so that she could hold one hand each. Erm. Almost like they were...maybe he wasn't going to think about that right now. That would be a smart thing to do. That question could be easily translated as to, Why aren't you a blockhead that won't leave us alone? Isaac shrugged. "It's my day off, I make a point not to have anywhere to go. You were sort of the highlight of my day." Maybe that was reaching for it, but that was a compliment without using the word...normal. It was sort of like telling a gangster rapper he couldn't curse. Everyone in his family was naturally tall...even his older sister was taller than Rei at five-ten. But that probably wouldn't be an excuse. He looked down at the girl, well...maybe making conversation with her would be easier and safer, and maybe she'd unwittingly give him something he could use, later. "So...um, Alice, do you always come walking here with your uncle?" |

The hint to leave was not only ignored but thrown away in general. It made Rei frown all the more, only partially satisfied that at least Alice wasn't looking at him and he could express most of his dislike at the moment. This was utterly ridiculous, he didn't have to deal with having to making relations with the man twice a day. With his niece of all people. "Umm," Alice started, frowning a bit as he tugged at her uncles hand shyly. "Twice." ...That wasn't right. "We've only come here twice Alice?" Rei questioned teasingly, pulling at her arm a bit, causing her to giggle and shake her head. "Silly unc...we come on mondays and thursdays!" She corrected. She grinned widely as he looked at Isaac. "Do you come here with uncle too?" |

Well, Joshua Bell's great advice was to be stubborn, and Isaac didn't know how to be stubborn without stepping on some toes. As far as he knew it was sort of unavoidable. And if this earned him squat, he was going to haunt Bell until kingdom come. So they came here every Tuesday and Thursday, but he wasn't thinking that much...only looking at the interaction between the two of them. Isaac was almost...envious. And he didn't like being envious of Pearce more than one day. But he came out of that when Alice asked him if he came here with...her uncle. Well...when the said uncle looked like he wanted to stab something...For a moment, Isaac looked honest, but he really wasn't sure how to respond, he usually planned everything, and right now, he had no answer. Was there even a right answer? Finally he said, "...Well, no, I don't. I work with your Uncle. I play the violin." |

Alice nodded, as if she was a very wise woman who understood the deeper implications. She didn't, she'd just seen her mother do it often. It wasn't until the word violin settled into her mind that her eyes widened happily. It was at that moment that Rei made the horrible realization that Isaac Langley had weaseled his way into his beloved niece's heart. He was almost livid. "Can I come over and hear you play--" "Alice, is that Cody from your class? Why don't you go play with him?" Rei spoke, spotting a child on time as the girls attention was diverted and she nodded, letting go of the hands before running toward her friend. At this point, Rei glared. "You..." He trailed off, sighing before shaking his head. He couldn't blame the man for winning over the girls affection. So he remembered why he was angry and that seemed to work, making him inhale the toxic smoke sharply before lifting a hand and taking the cigarette from his mouth. He didn't say anything after though. He'd let Isaac take the lead on this one. |

Maybe Joshua's plan had been faulty to begin with. But the niece was easy. But now...he'd have to work on Pearce himself. Which was the equivalent of moving a mountain. He had done it once today, he would have to do it again. "If your uncle lets you." He told her before she ran off to play with some boy that Pearce had pointed out. Cody, whatever. Isaac had bigger problems. And...as proof of how ticked Pearce was...he was smoking. Isaac had never seen him smoke, except for that one time with York. Isaac personally wouldn't have lit up in front of a kid Alice's age, but...each to his own, right? Isaac didn't even smoke, he was more of a drinker type. Nothing followed after the 'you,' so Isaac took a deep breath. "Why don't you yell at me first and get it out of your system? I probably deserve it." He looked away, "It might make what I have to say easier to listen to." After all, if Pearce got it all off his chest...maybe Isaac would have a chance. Or maybe he'd have no chance and he'd have to kill Joshua Bell. |
