Rei knocked on the wooden table immediately. It was a strange thing and caused him to freeze. A strange topic was being tread on, even if Isaac didn’t quite realize it himself. A topic that Rei wasn’t sure he should be sharing. The table knocking had been superstition. The compromise...it still made him uneasy. The entire idea was uneasy, for a very delicate reason that had showed itself in the past few years. “I only call lovers by their first names,” he mumbled, his blush evidently growing darker as he nibbled on his lip all the more. “Well...friends who I consider family and current lovers.” It had been a rather horrible, pathetic slip up that happened that one time...something he should correct. “And don’t get confused. Last time, Nick had been bothering me the night before on my new concertmasters full name so he could potentially write an article. I had to say your full name so many times that it slipped out.” That was when he finally realized what he had been called. His eyes opened wide, his fingers letting go of his fork as it fell softly on his plate, his cheeks darkening all the more. “...A-Aren’t you?” Damn stutter. “I’m old fashioned. S-So sue me, okay?” He quickly picked up his fork and placed salmon inside his mouth, a bit too embarrassed to say anything else. It just had to be Isaac Langley, of all the damn people... |

Well, Isaac wasn't superstitious everything that happened was either bad circumstance, or good circumstance, which was probably why. But his expression grew more and more amused as he watched the other man across the table blush and fumble. Of all people, Rei Pearce. Of all people. Maybe he should have told Matthias to stalk him, after all. He could have chosen to acknowledge the lovers' slip, but...but he didn't. The one slip that he did choose to acknowledge was, "...Well, if you told York my name so many times, you really shouldn't have any trouble saying it to me. And I'm not reading into it or anything, just pointing it out, is all." But still, he didn't laugh, although this was superiorly hilarious, he was going to have to treat himself to something later. And...Jesus, did calling his name like that warrant him dropping a fork? What would sex be like? Calmly, Isaac turned back to his foi gras. "I'd sue, but I've got no grounds for a lawsuit, and yes, that's supposedly me trying your brand of humor. I probably suck at it. But think about it, Rei, even if I'm not a close friend or a...lover, I'd like to delude myself into thinking that you respect me enough as a fellow musician to honor my request, if only for a couple of hours." There, he'd played his last ace, after that, he'd call Pearce by his first name until he got annoyed enough to call him Isaac. That seemed like a foolproof plan. |

“...It’s different in person,” Rei mumbled, his cheeks not growing lighter as the seconds passed on. That didn’t seem to stop Isaac from calling his name again though, making Rei wonder if revealing it had been smart in the first place. Then again, he wasn’t thinking logically at this point. Maybe this lunch and drinks wasn’t such a good idea after all. It was surprising that his ‘humor’ was used. “You’d have no reason to sue me. What would you gain?” However...Isaac pulled out a rather good point. So he sighed, mumbling to himself before straightening up and attempting to look dignified like he usually did. Minus the blush off course. “Fine. I’ll humor you…” he trailed off, glancing off to the side ever so slightly. “...Isaac.” The name came out pronounced, the sound rolling off his tongue in a beautiful manner. He went back to eating his salmon, as if the conversation had never even occurred. |

Isaac said nothing for a long, long moment, and then he shrugged. He was not used to watching his words so much, but he had a feeling that it was going to have to make that a regular habit if he was...going to court Pearce for the next month. "I don't know, the thrill of suing someone, maybe. I'm one of those people that watches too much television so I can enjoy a good lawsuit." (Which was sort of a lie, but that made for good conversation.) And then his conductor, looking like that, called him Isaac. Strangely, Isaac felt a glow of warmth deep in his chest. Well, wouldn't he? Because he'd gotten what he wanted, and it had taken him a full two years and a half for him to get on first name basis with this man. Who wouldn't be pleased? Besides, Pearce looked...Isaac was not going to go there. "I'd probably be going in circles to ask you why it's so different, so I won't." He decided finally, sparing a faintly pleased smile across the table that made him look strangely mature. "But thank you, that means almost much as my getting a theoretical Julliard degree." And maybe...he was a little bit too hung up on that. But Isaac...when Isaac wanted things, he usually got them. This was one of the very few things he didn't get. And he was almost relieved that Pearce didn't see fit to join that list. They were getting somewhere, after all. Maybe he could be a little helpful. |

That smile looked strange on Isaac. It made him look older, more knowledgeable and ahead of the game. It was strange that he didn't pry further. It was strange that he seemed so comfortable in calling him 'Rei' and wanted the same. He wanted it to be a permanent change but made do with it temporary. It was at that moment that Rei had concluded that Isaac indeed was a very strange man. He just wasn't quite decided if this strange man should be dealt with. "...A first name basis with myself is equal to Julliard?" That was confused. Perhaps it was a joke, his form of flattering humor. Or it was part of something else that he wasn't aware of. There conversations were getting strange and personal...and this was only dinner. Rei was beginning to doubt he could handle drinks after. He was honest when he drank and tended to stop thinking. In the bad, stupid spontaneous sort of way. He'd stick to one drink. He'd make up an excuse...he was paying after all. Isaac could drink all he wanted. He doubted there was much for the violinist to spill anyway. Rei finished his salmon with a final bite, placing the fork on the plate to signal his finish as he leaned back and watched Isaac. Hn. A strange man indeed. |

"We-ell. Not exactly," Isaac realized his mistake and immediately pulled it back, if he was too bold to begin with...that wouldn't help his case, "But see, it's an impossibility of sorts, yes? For all I know, no one in the Phil calls you Rei, I can be a little honored that I'm the first. I'm comparing two things that I sort of have on a pedestal. You, and Juilliard. So in a way, yeah, I guess. That's not a joke, by the way." However open Isaac seemed, he wasn't quite ready to admit that he lived most of his life under a stupid inferiority complex. Besides, Matthias only wanted him to get Pearce into bed, Isaac didn't have to spill his life story in the process. Pearce was done eating, and Isaac...wasn't so hungry anymore because his mind was working a mile a minute. The drinks were paramount here. He had a play his cards right. He called for the check and paid without his usual flourish. (Which would have surprised Matthias, but the other man wasn't here at the moment, shame.) "Merci, monsieurs! Come again." Isaac only nodded, he stepped outside again. It was a nice crisp temperature outside, tending on the cold side, but Isaac always preferred the cold over too much warmth. "So...um," it felt a little strange just to walk from lunch straight into a bar, but that was probably what Pearce--Rei, wanted. |

Rei nodded slowly with the explanation. “It’s not an impossibility...just unlikely.” He was about to point out and ask if the ‘pedestal’ was a joke. It wasn’t. It made him a bit surprised, the blush returning. This time however, he didn’t quite hide it as he smiled rather beautifully. “I’m honored you hold me to such a high regard. So I’ll take your request seriously, Isaac. Don’t make me regret it,” he spoke, though the last part was with a bit of a grin. The bill came and as Isaac had promised, he had for it in full. No excuses, no sudden plea for even an extra five. He paid for it in full and without batting an eyelash. It made Rei have a bit more respect for the male, in his character rather than talent. The outdoor weather was pleasant, making him smile as he took in a deep breath. It seemed wrong to just go to the bar immediately. So he glanced at his watch and noticed how he seemed to have an extra bit of time. “Isaac, is it alright if we walk around a bit first? Autumn’s always been my favorite and its a waste to sit inside the whole afternoon,” he spoke, a small smile on his features that suited him strangely enough. He was forgetting who he was with, the whole first name thing playing with his head in the worst of ways. |

For one thing, it wasn't like Isaac was some tramp, and besides, he'd already said he would pay? So he would pay, whining about it didn't win him any brownie points whatsoever. "You should be, my ego usually gets in the way of me respecting people. And...that's half a joke." (Maybe a little less than half. But it had more truth in it than Isaac would have liked.) And it was nice to see that Pearce was finally taking him seriously. Ah...say what? Pearce wanted to...walk around. And he'd called him Isaac again. The warmth swelled in his chest again and Isaac quickly quashed it down. He needed to think about this objectively. If he put other things in...he wouldn't be as effective. But nowhere in the book did it say he couldn't be a little bit happy about all this. "Sure, I'd like that." He said neutrally with a small contented smile playing on his lips. He'd at least have to go home and tell Matthias that Rei really wasn't bad when he wasn't holding a baton. "Is there a specific place where you'd like to walk...or should we just be spontaneous and meander?" Not that Pearce really knew anything about being spontaneous, he thought. Well, he'd taken so many first steps already, maybe it wasn't too bold of Isaac to ask him to take another? Besides, Pearce always seemed like the person who had his life perfectly, meticulously planned out. |

“Isn’t the whole point of walking to just walk?” Rei asked, raising an eyebrow rather curiously. How could you plan out where the air would smell crisp or how the leaves would crinkle under your foot steps? It probably seemed strange to Isaac, but there were a few factors that always had a rather strong pull on the conductor. He loved Autumn, much more than most tended to. He also wasn’t thinking with his head as his main barrier had been pulled down thanks to the small temporary deal of name calling he had whipped out. That and the spiked coffee might have been underestimated. He stayed pretty straight faced after that though, a serene look on his face instead of the seemingly permanent furrowing of brows. “Unless you have anywhere specific you want to walk.” A small part of Rei couldn’t help but worry what the next day would look like. In fact, he couldn’t help but worry why things had changed so much over the past week. It wasn’t like Isaac. Not the Isaac he knew for the couple of years that he did. He didn’t question it this time though. He just stayed silence, enjoying the quiet and taking in their surroundings. ‘You know, maybe he isn’t all that mad after all,’ Rei thought, glancing at the male for a moment. Then he realized how much taller Isaac was. He looked forward and sulked inside immediately. |

Isaac looked at Pearce for a long moment before he shook himself and shrugged, "I usually just meander, but I wasn't aware that you and I can finally share the same opinion on something, it's nice, actually." The three inches was rather noticeable now that they were walking side by side, but obviously, it didn't nag at Isaac the same way. "But the answer to your question is no, although I usually do all my walking in Central Park...I just come here to drink, so I don't walk here that much." Vaguely, he too, wondered what would happen tomorrow when they were back to work and everything was normal again. Although Isaac wondered, and not worried, if anything, he'd be back to square one, except with the assurance that Pearce could be a nice, pleasant, rather good-looking human being if he wanted to. And that was encouraging. "One of these days, I think I'd have to take you to Autumn Road in the Cognac region, it's in France, I think you'd enjoy it. It's gorgeous there in the fall. Course...I guess I ddin't appreciate it that much since I innately like spring, but still..." He liked it in early March when winter was fading away into spring, it meant something began, while fall signalled something's end. Although of course, that kind of day would never come, him taking Pearce to France. Who was Isaac kidding? |

“We share the same opinion on a few things,” Rei countered, looking forward as he tried to get over the height complex currently kicking him in the shin. “Music just to name another.” He nodded at the sentiment though, understanding that it made sense to come here for certain purposes. Walking in Central Park was one of his favorites also, though Battery Park didn’t fall far behind during the right time of the year. It made him want to laugh considering they were talking about similarities and they had opposite favorite seasons. “That sounds like a dream,” he spoke, pausing for a moment as he truly thought about it. Did Isaac just say he wanted to go take him to France? That was more than bonding. That was more than concertmaster and conductor. That was more than friends. That… That sounded like something lovers would do. It made him turn his head and look up, his eyes widened partially as his mouth opened in shock. “...You want to take me to France?” |

Did Pearce actually want them to have things in common? That was slightly...disturbing. But promising. Maybe some of it would leak on to the next day if he was hopeful enough. "Yeah, but we don't interpret anything the same at all..." And they certainly didn't look at music the same way. Pearce had to have a baton up his ass about it, and maybe back in the day, he had a bow. Isaac blinked at him, "...Really? I guess I just like things starting better than I do things ending. That's all. Otherwise, I've nothing against autumn." It was actually quite a nice colorful season, but then, Isaac wasn't sentimental like that. Being sentimental would be him losing his objectivity for things. And if there was one thing that Isaac was afraid of, it was losing his objectivity, and coming face to face with his inferiority complex. But so far, he was doing all right on both counts. Pearce was looking at him slackjawed. Isaac shrugged, "You know, just because I say I want to, doesn't mean that you'll necessarily want to go with me, or that we'll actually go at all. Unless you really do want to go...why do you look so surprised?" Besides, as far as Isaac was concerned, they could go to France and hang out there as...friends? Maybe? |

"Interpretations and commonalities are two different things," Rei pondered before he began questioning his decision to walk all over again. He was given a chance to think up something different though as the idea of autumn started. It was then that he laughed for the second time. "You consider autumn the end? Why, I see it as the beginning or more accurately, the push that keeps the cycle going. That and I'm just a fan of the smell." It was a strange thing to share. His thoughts on his favorite season. He had sentimental value attached to the colder seasons though so perhaps he wouldn't be understood without finishing the story. That only meant that Isaac would never really understand his love of autumn...which wasn't exactly a bad thing. His surprised look seemed to fade away as he wondered just how to explain his thoughts. Saying he didn't trust the whole outing wasn't the way to go about it. "Because I have no understanding on why you'd ever want to go to France with me. You don't take someone to France just to bond a professional relationship." His sentence was cut off as he felt something fall on his head, his eyes glancing up to see a colorful leaf hanging off the top. It inspired him really...he almost wanted to run into a pile. He might have done that if he was younger. Julia would have gone with him without question. Now things were a bit different and all he did was took the leaf and stare at it a bit. |

Well...in a way, Pearce probably would. Isaac liked to think that the beginnings began with spring and cold fading into warmth, but it was no surprise that his conductor liked the opposite. Isaac looked at him strangely with an almost quizzical look for a moment. “You like...the smell.” It was such a strange statement that he had to puzzle it over for a moment for an appropriate response. In the end, there wasn’t one and Isaac only shrugged. “You’re more sentimental than I thought.” But after a moment, he hastily tacked on, “which is a good thing.” Besides, if a person liked music that much, he had to be a little bit sentimental, right? But maybe they were two people doomed not to understand one another...though it wasn’t like pulling teeth, like had originally anticipated. Isaac shrugged again. “It looks nice, and I want to share it with you. Professionalism has nothing to do with it, probably that means that nothing’s going to come of it, but still.” Oddly enough, he was just a little bit wistful. “Or...we can go on tour to Paris and I’d have an excuse, you know, since no matter how I spin it, it’ll always sound like something else.” And then, almost by accident, he said, “...I’m beginning to understand why you don’t act like a normal person in front of the Phil.” |

“Yes,” Rei spoke as if it was the most natural thing in the world. “Each season has its own smell. Autumn just happens to be my personal favorite.” It was a rather strange concept that few understood. Now that he thought about it, those closest to him were always the ones who seemed to understand the silly idea. But the issue didn’t seem to be passed by. Why would he want to share it with him? It didn’t make sense in his mind. Not when he thought about their relationship a week ago…something had definitely changed. Something that perhaps was out of his control and was going to affect him, whether he liked it or not, which really was the most troubling thing of all. Now certainly wouldn’t be a good time to take out a cigarette and smoke then. He was going to respond, say something around the lines of ‘maybe, I’ll consider it if the opportunity presents itself’ that would probably let the topic slide. But he couldn’t. Not after the words. The change was immediate. The light smile and aura of tranquility that seemed to radiate from him shut itself off, the barrier that had been falling down resurrected and made higher than before. Rei had shut himself off at the words, the hardness returning to his eyes. “It seems we differ much more than either one of us could imagined. Pardon if my definition of normal differs Langley.” It was almost frightening, just how fast he could change to the shell he showed. Even their promise seemed to be thrown aside as his behavior as a conductor was brought up. He was blunt and cold with his words, his eyes retaining their icy nature as he wondered if they had perhaps taken too long on their little walk. “Where is this said bar?” |
