It was all around a serious enough question.

"I refuse to believe that you used to be horrible, unless you've somehow killed off your evil twin without anyone noticing." Isaac raised a brow. Pearce was...laughing, really laughing, and Isaac...was still awed over the fact that he'd made it happen, somehow. Yes, it had everything out with what he was supposed to do, But--

"You got Juilliard, don't complain." Isaac glanced down briefly at his own coffee cup for a long, long moment. "That's why I left, couldn't exactly deal with failure. I guess I was immature back then." It felt like Pearce had admitted something fiercely private...and he had laughed, so the least Isaac could do was return the favor? "I'd like to think I'm not so juvinile now...maybe." This whole undertaking was juvinile.

He wasn't going to think about it now. Lips pressed lightly against the rim of the cup, his eyes found Pearce's again.

"But that's not...what I meant. You can still be grown up and have fun. You don't let yourself go, an accident or being fifty years older doesn't matter, it's not about that. This is the first time in the two and a half years I've played under you, that I've heard you laugh. Ever. Which...is just a bit disturbing."

Rei’s smile almost turned bitter. “...Well no. Not my twin brother at least.” It was a strange comment but he didn’t say or build off on it anymore. He just seemed to act a bit more twitchy, his hand shaking the cup that held the coffee ever so slightly. He tried to hide it by swirling the dark brown liquid.

He relaxed though as the topic seemed to lighten. “Don’t be bitter. You got France, two languages and you’re improving rapidly. Different meant but you have the better end.”

The words made him think, his stature relaxing as he wondered about the words. “That is disturbing...you’ve worked under me for two and a half years?” He didn’t even let his joke sit as he moved on quickly. “I don’t laugh at work. I don’t find anything amusing about teaching and leading music to a bunch of twenty year olds who are to busy staring at certain members in the group who are...how do I say this delicately, females who are rather well endowed.”

It was a pet peeve. He’d warned many females to stop wearing v-neck shirts. Then they complained at being ogled at by male members of the group. Ridiculous.

“And I have no need to let myself go with colleagues. I have many skeletons in my closet Langley. It’s best to keep the important things hidden.”

"Well...that's certainly nice to know, that I'm memorable enough for you to over look for two and a half years." Isaac smirked and trailed off.

"But I wanted Julliard...everyone in my family got Juillard and went on to med school, you have no idea how that was for me." But then again, that seemed almost too personal, so Isaac quickly let go of the subject, Pearce seemed eager to move on too, about how he was frustrated by people staring at Patricia's rack--Isaac liked paraphrasing in his head. But then he was serious again, Pearce had a way of making him do that...think heavily. It wasn't something that Isaac liked, but obviously he was going to have to put up with it.

And not his twin brother...? That comment seemed a little much for him to handle, so he left it alone.

"I'd translate that for you, but knowing you, you'd probably hit me. And I'd deserve it." Isaac took another sip of his coffee, and he had time to think about his next words as a waiter came up to deliver two steaming bowls of French onion soup.

What came out of his mouth was finally, "So you're just going to keep the skeletons and let them ruin the rest of your life? If you're so determined to live a short one...at least try to enjoy it. Again, just a thought. Bon appetite." Maybe such a statement was a tad too observant.

(Now you’ve got me all curious…)

“More like I don’t keep track of time. I couldn’t even tell you how long I’ve been conducting,” Rei argued, though he wondered why he was defending his statement that he would usually let slide. He never cared if he insulted. Maybe it was this whole ‘bonding’ that was finally getting to him.

Then again, perhaps he’d just underestimated Isaac. Maybe he was more than a testosterone filled brain hell bent on causing destruction everywhere he went. Julliard might have meant more than Rei could understand...maybe the same way Isaac couldn’t understand why he let go of the violin, no matter how much it hurt him.

It just wasn’t meant to be understood.

So they moved on. “If anything, at least you’re developing a filter,” he added before the smell of onion soup hit him, causing him to look up slowly as the lovely dish was placed in front of him. He couldn’t quite yet enjoy it. It seemed Isaac wasn’t quite ready to move on.

“...I have no need for that.” Liar. “I enjoy my life…” You want to play. Just tell him. “...and I keep my work and private life separate.” Even she wanted you to play.

“I don’t share private details with regular people, concertmaster or not. Thank you however, your advice shall be noted,” he finished off dryly before taking a small sip of the soup. Delicious. “It’s very good by the way.”

"There's a reason why I order this every time I come here."

For a long moment, Isaac didn't say anything. It wasn't so much what Pearce said, really, it was the fact that he went and meticulously defended every statement Isaac just made, which meant the statements got to him and he felt the need to defend it. Which never happened before. More good signs? Isaac certainly hoped so.

And Pearce went so far as to say that he enjoyed his life, that he didn't share any private information, and he liked keeping his private and work life separate. As did everyone else. Isaac swallowed a thoughtful mouthful before speaking again.

"This is one of those times where I swear I'm not being snarky, but it's going to come off that way, I've always had a filter, I'm just too lazy to turn it on most times." Maybe that was too bold, but...maybe Pearce didn't know? He was so convincing...to himself, that he probably couldn't think any other way.

"From where I'm sitting you look absolutely miserable." (And this would be the part where Pearce would stood up and stormed out. And then Isaac would be back to square one.)

(Oh love you torture me so...)

“Then I’m honored to know that you’re beginning to turn it on.” It was plain and simple, merely because Rei was growing tired at talking. He was beginning to feel analyzed, as if he was participating in some sort of game he didn’t know anything about.

The soup was good though and he allowed himself to focus on that. Not Julia’s letter. “I had a rough night,” he spoke, not willing to defend or even give more information to further fuel the male.

“Perhaps you just need a new angle to look at.”

It was a strange suggestion but Rei was beginning to wonder why Isaac felt so righteous all of a sudden. For a man who knew so little about his conductor, he was acting like he had all the answers. Answers to the questions he had yet to hear.

“You look much more miserable than I do. For some reason or another, you’ve picked me to be your lunch and drinking partner. Derringer could have certainly done lunch.”

"Even people like me learn, somehow, Pearce."

It wasn't so much that Isaac felt righteous, really, it was just...the truth. And even though he was good at twisting truths, this was one of those times where he couldn't. But he was surprised that Pearce stayed where he was...well, maybe the food persuaded him. Whatever the reason, Isaac was glad for a second chance. But when Pearce turned it around and said Isaac looked a misery. He wasn't sure what to say to that, so...another silence ensued before he found the right words again.

"I'm not miserable," Isaac said finally, "Me and Matthias do lunch all the time, and I had the entire New York Phil over at my apartment for a drinking fest just the other day, you disappeared so we couldn't invite you." (Just why they were drinking, he wouldn't say.) "Well, okay, I'll give you that I will be always sore about how I couldn't take the path I would have liked, but still. This is different."

"You and I never have drinks, or lunch, for that matter. It's not like having a change of pace will give you a migraine." Isaac pointed out mildly. "Besides, if I didn't call you, you'd probably worked yourself to death on your day off, knowing you. The fact that you practically had to defend every claim that I made though...? That's suspicious."

And it was, because defending claims...probably meant something. "...I really didn't want lunch to turn into a philosophical debate, I'm going to be the one suffering from a migraine." Since he never liked thinking too much.

Rei took in the silence, taking a small comfort in it. It was the one thing he could rely on that didn’t seem to be changing these days. He didn’t react, still eating his soup when it was broken, placing down the spoon very lightly.

“It was a mild joke Langley. You’re one of the least miserable people I know,” he spoke lightly, though he was a bit amused as to the reasoning he was given. He wondered what would happen if he began to analyze and pick apart the words…

But he wasn’t feeling up to it. No...not anymore at least. Perhaps it was something in the soup.

“Hmm...close,” he mused, swirling the liquid in his soup ever so slightly. “I would have cleaned, gone over my notes and visited my niece. I’m still doing the later, just in the evening.”

He didn’t quite touch the defending claims. He wasn’t going to go back into that specific discussion. “Whatever you prefer. It is the hosts job to pick topics of discussion, not the guests.”

It seemed ironic considering what he asked next. “So you come here with Derringer?”

"You're not the best at making jokes, if anything." Isaac didn't say that to rile him, he said that to be the truth, Pearce was a horrible, horrible jokester, but he hadn't any reason to be a good one.

Gone to see his niece, huh? Well, it was good to see Pearce still would have gotten out...just a little, of course, it wasn't in the way that Isaac or any normal human being would have liked, for that matter, but still. "Well, then I'm glad I called you." His grin, for once, held no malicious promise behind it as he looked over.

"Well...yeah, ever since we moved here, we check back here once a month, it's nice here and even though Matthias can't speak a word of French. He butchers bonjour, and there's something wrong with you if you butcher that." Maybe that was telling Pearce that it was all right that he didn't speak any French...although Isaac didn't know if the conductor would pick up that particular nuance. There was no shame in it, after all, Isaac only learned it when he had to.

Silence seemed to be a reoccurring trait between the two of them, and Isaac had to admit it was some what nice. He wasn't a talkative person to begin with, and...Pearce was practically a stone wall, but at least he thought enough of Isaac to speak back once in a while.

Their food came, and the foi gras looked good, although Isaac had to wonder how Pearce felt about him eating goose liver across the table.

Finally, he ventured with a wave of his fork, "...Want to try some? After you get over the idea that it's goose liver, it's actually pretty good."

“You just don’t understand my humor. You’re too convinced I’m made of ice,” Rei pointed out rather calmly, taking in the final spoon that finished off his soup. Ah, what a lovely course it had been. He was almost tempted to see if he could get more...but that wasn’t quite rational, now was it?

“I’m sure. You haven’t seen my apartment, it could have used that cleaning.” He did need to call his niece after lunch to confirm that he wouldn’t be arriving early. Ah she was quite troublesome...but he loved her, in a strange way that many probably wouldn’t understand.

Rei nodded, smiling as bit. It was as if Isaac was trying to make him feel better about their earlier topic. It was slightly endearing. He’d take the compliment silently though, not quite feeling up to verbally acknowledging it.

Soon the food came and Rei was quite happy to know he had picked a rather safe option. He just kept his eyes to his own plate. It had always been rather childish of him...but he never liked liver. The texture...the taste...none of it.

It was no wonder that his flat looked changed to one of surprised fear when it was offered to him. “...I-I’m quite good.” Dear god...there was no way.

...Well, that was probably it too, maybe.

"Believe it or not, I'd like you to convince me that you're not ice." Isaac said, taking the last spoonful of onion soup and setting it aside. "But...you know, cold exterior at work and all that, I get it. I personally think it's a little tiring to act bipolar, but might just be me." And then when Pearce said his apartment needed a cleaning...well, Isaac could have jumped on that, but he didn't. "It scares me a little that your apartment sounds like mine when Matthias isn't OCDed."

Isaac took in that look that Pearce gave him though, liver didn't...well, maybe it was an acquired taste. He shrugged and ate the forkful himself. "Then, you really should be glad you didn't go to France. That's all they eat over there. You'd probably live on soup." He dabbed his mouth with a napkin. Usually, he wasn't so meticulous when he was eating, but he had to be mindful that this was Pearce...and he had a goal to achieve.

And then a thought occurred to him. They weren't even on a first name basis yet. And considering they'd known each other for two and a half years...

"I'd like to try an experiment. Since neither of us are at work right now, I don't think there's any harm for me to start calling you Rei and you can call me Isaac." Or was that too far, again?

“But that would make me seem equal,” Rei spoke, before pausing for a moment. “...That was a joke too. Just in case you couldn’t catch on.” It was outright poking fun at, another form of humor that might take Isaac a moment to realize, especially considering who it was coming from.

“That sounds lovely. I’ve always been a fan of soup,” he mumbled, quite happy on the idea as he took a bite of salmon. It was good...but he liked the soup a bit more. Perhaps it was the cheese. “I don’t like...liver. It’s one of the few things I can’t stand to ingest,” he added lightly before a rather strange suggestion was thrown at him.

First name basis?

Isaac wanted them to speak to one another using each others first name? Now that seemed a bit far too personal, even for him. He bit his lip, nibbling slightly on the lower as he thought it over. He looked somewhat cute, his fork playing with his food as he thought.

“...But we would go back to calling each other by our last names once at work?” It was strange, almost like a one day thing. It felt like Cinderella's story, where his name would be the glass shoe. “Do you have something against my last name?”

It wasn't so much the joke that was funny. It was Pearce flat out telling him that it was a joke, now. That was hilarious. Isaac laughed and shook his head, "Well...it's just a thought, I mean, it gets lonely up so high and maybe you'd like to come down." How could anyone stand something like that, anyway? Even Joshua Bell didn't seem so high and mighty.

Now, if Isaac knew that Pearce was comparing his proposition to Cinderella, of all things...really? he would have laughed until kingdom come. But as he did not, he returned to a straight face as he considered.

"You know," he said finally, sampling some more of his liver, it was good, he'd have to rec this to Matthias when he got home. "That's so like you. I ask you a question about today, and here you are, already thinking about tomorrow."

And did Pearce know how...vulnerable he looked when he was like that? Isaac wasn't going to pursue it now.

"Do you have something against my first name?" Well, he was perfectly entitled, "The answer is no, by the way, to your question, I just thought, you know, since the theme of the day happens to be expect the unexpected...or a change of pace, whatever floats your boat."

Isaac had a nice laugh. It was different to the cocky sound he heard during rehearsal...this one was nice. “Hn, perhaps.” It was a simple solution but he was still curious as to why the male had laughed. It was probably because he pointed out that he spoke a joke.

“I’m not the type who lives in the moment. I like to plan out my future wisely...and you never answered my question,” Rei pointed out quite clearly, dead set on getting an answer before agreeing.

He wouldn’t agree to that. They were already getting closer than he would have liked, this change in both their private and work lives...he could just let it go. He had to keep some sort of control over it.

“Exactly how long would this change last is what concerns me...Langley.” He was stubborn if anything, resuming his lip biting as he tilted his head ever so slightly to the right. “And your name is...fine.” The lightest of blushes hit him before he shook his head ever so slightly to get rid of the thought.

"Though that's hardly the problem here."

"Oh, come on, it's not like you've never called me Isaac." He'd called him Isaac in front of the entire orchestra. And he couldn't let the name slip in private? What a hypocrite. "That's what's wrong with you, honestly, people like you, they always think they can control what happens tomorrow. I mean, for all you know, I might go and fall and break all my fingers and then you wouldn't have a concertmaster who can play worth shit. Not that I'm insinuating that I'm going to go and break all my fingers, but you know, that's not something you just...know. You have no way of knowing."

Isaac sighed, Pearce was as every bit of a challenge as Matthias had laid him out to be, if he was having this much trouble convincing Pearce to call him by his first name? How the hell was he supposed to convince him to do other things?"

But Isaac caught the other man's blush, it was slight, but it was there.

Which was why, "I don't see a problem, frankly, but I'm nowhere near you intellectually, so...if it bugs you so much, it can be for one day." He sighed and twirled his fork, it was something juvenile that he hadn't been able to totally quit. "You're making this sound like I'm asking you to move mountains for me, Rei." When in reality it was...simple.

And he'd done it. Now to see if Pearce would explode on him.
