What once was a tentative title, is now official. Nintendo just announced the Nintendo 3DS handheld.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata showed off the Nintendo 3DS for the first time in public at the show. The handhled's upper screen is in widescreen ratio, while the lower screen is a touch screen, and the unit also features a single analog stick, as well as a traditional d-pad and buttons. More interestingly, the 3D is controlled by a slider which allows you to slide the degree to which you want to experience 3D, from not at all to full on, and points in between. In general, Iwata says that Nintendo made graphical improvements to the unit from the DS.

It's compatible with the Nintendo DSi, and it has cameras, but it also has two cameras on the outside, which allows you to take photos and view them in 3D.

Iwata says that the unit can show 3D movies, and although he said that Nintendo wasn't making any specific announcements, trailers for How to Train Your Dragon and Tangled would be at the booth.

The 3DS also improves upon the current model in the connectivity department. The unit searches for Wi-fi, and other nearby Nintendo systems. This connection with other systems won't shut off if the other person is playing a game, like now. The 3Ds also uses Wi-fi access points. Nintendo promises that quests, rankings, and other game information will be available for 3Ds owners to pull down about their games at any time.

Iwata also promised plenty of games for the system on the first day it comes out, and he debuted Kid Icarus Uprising, as well as said there would be games from a wide range of partners, including EA, Ubisoft, Konami, Capcom and more. This includes titles for franchises like Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil, Madden, and Assassin's Creed.

No release date or pricing was announced.

Everytime I go to buy a DS, another new one bloody comes out lol.

I'm amazed by this new one and would get it. I hope Nintendo remakes Majora's Mask for 3DS like Ocarina of Time, I'd buy both in an instant.

Nintendo is putting out a health warning about the their 3D function in the 3DS.

Quote:

Is Nintendo about to alienate a core section of its audience? In advance of a special event for the 3DS in Japan, Nintendo released a statement warning parents that children ages six or younger should only use 2D mode when playing the upcoming handheld. According to Nintendo's statement (which is located here and translated by the Wall Street Journal), use of artificial 3D can possibly affect the development of healthy eyes.

Nintendo didn't stop there. The gaming giant also stressed that adults shouldn't play in 3D mode for more than 30 minutes at a stretch. The warnings are not blanket reasons to avoid the 3DS altogether, but these are aggressive statements against what's supposed to be the central feature of the 3DS.

Is this a preemptive strike against medical experts that are sure to weigh in when the 3DS is released this spring? Nintendo is often keen to address potential problems before they become full-fledged PR nightmares, as evidenced by the repeat measures (wrist strap warnings and rubber shells) to guard against flying Wii Remotes.

These eyesight warnings are rather reminiscent of those issued by Nintendo in the wake of the Virtual Boy launch, where breaks from the 3D action were not mandatory, but heavily suggested. That wasn't the key undoing of the Virtual Boy, but it was definitely a piece of the rug that was eventually pulled out from under the gaming device. Will 3D end up a curse for Nintendo after all?

Look for more details about the 3DS on January 8-10 right here on IGN, as reports from the Nintendo World 2011 event come across the pond.

Yup. The launch line-up is pretty weak but Street Fighter is fucking sick. Probably the best looking version of the game (apart from the fact that the backgrounds are static) and Ghost Recon seems to be a pretty good Advance Wars knock off.

I'm getting wet thinking about Paper Mario, Kid Icarus, Legend of Zelda, Mario Kart and the two Mario platformers (one sidescroller, one like mario 64).

The 3D is completely pants-shittingly awesome and the AR games are cool as hell. I wanna get down the brissy so I can get more Streetpasses though.

Just walking between Queen Street Mall and QUT would give a bunch I'd imagine.
