Yeah, Iron Man 2 was pretty sweet. CG was amazing and I love how they hint at other Marvel characters throughout the show. Avengers movie is gonna be awesome~

Saw it tonight, good movie.

Without Robert Downey Jr. Tony Stark wouldn't be the same character.

Hooray!

If there was any movie in history that one would assume to sport the "Made in the USA" label, it would have to be next year's Captain America: The First Avenger. However, according to the LA Times, the upcoming film adaptation of Marvel's original hero, who is infused with high doses of super-solider serum and pure American patriotism, will actually settle its production in London!

According to the explanation from Marvel co-President, Louis D'Esposito:

"Though Marvel could have done the stage work in L.A. and shot exteriors in London, it wasn't economically feasible to split the production between two locations, given the heavy filming required in Europe." Adding: "I actually had location scouts here to see what could be done, but it would have required so much visual-effects work and set construction, it didn't make sense."

Apparently, the location change from L.A. to London came about as a result of the film's approximately $140 million budget leaving it ineligible for a critical tax break. Unfortunately for Marvel, the cut-off budget level for the incentive, which would have offered 20-25% payable in tax credit, was only $75 million. It's not exactly something that will attract future mega-budget epics, whose costs will only rise as the years go by. After consideration, Marvel's new honchos over at Walt Disney Co. made the decision to take things over to 'ole Blighty, where exterior shooting had already been planned. Much of the film was to take place in the World War II era, perhaps during the backdrop of the Blitz, and the move is more in the spirit of geographic convenience.

So, to recap -- even Captain f'ing America could not stand up to the irresistible, seductive force of outsourcing! The only thing that could be more ironic, would be if a movie with Chuck Norris playing a karate savvy George Washington who comes to the future to fight North Koreans ends up being shot in China. Though D'Esposito claims that Marvel remains committed to ensuring most future films stay in the States, it does bring attention to the way in which opportunities for domestic revenue (especially for cash-strapped California) can slip through the fingers.

Captain America: The First Avenger, starring Chris Evans, is set to hit theaters on July 22, 2011.

Lets hope its not just one giant teaser trailer for The Avengers like Iron Man 2 was.

Hugo Weaving as Red Skull sold me on it long ago, though

I'm not exactly a comic book expert, but I believe that Captain America fought in WW2 or something? So, being in that area kinda makes sense...

I still don't like Chris Evans as Cap. Captain America was someone who immediately displayed a sense of leadership and authority. The Human Torch doesn't do that for me.

ComicBookMovie is claiming to have an inside scoop on the shape of the upcoming Marvel mega movie crossover, The Avengers. Apparently, the main villains in the film will be Marvel's iconic bad guy alien race, the Skrulls.

The evil green-skinned, shape-shifting menaces have been pestering the superheroes of the Marvel Universe since they first appeared in the second issue of The Fantastic Four back in 1962. However, their inclusion in any Marvel film seemed like a long-shot at best.

Entertaining this rumor, what could this empire of cosmos-traveling baddies potentially bring to a film that will contain not only Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man, but Chris Hemsworth's Thor, and Chris Evans' Captain America?

The general belief about The Avengers, was that its conflict would involve stopping the rampaging Hulk, who had somehow been brainwashed to do the bidding of evil. In the case of the comic book canon, Thor's nemesis and half-brother Loki (who in the Thor movie will be played by Tom Hiddleston,) was the culprit behind this plot, which was the impetus for the initial formation of the Avengers team. However, the report indicates that the Skrulls will somehow replace Loki's role as the puppet-masters in this plot to exploit the Hulk.

Additionally, the Skrulls' enemies (which make them our friends,) the race of the Kree will also apparently be a presence in the film. This rumor may be validated by the other rumor floating about that 90210 actor Kevin Pennington was slated to play a Kree character called Noh-Varr. (Although there was also speculation that he would play the Hulk's teenage friend, Rick Jones.)

The Avengers will undoubtedly have a lot of hype to live up to. And rightfully so, considering the scope of the project. Including the Skrulls in any Marvel film, much less the biggest of all time, could be a risky move. For one thing, it will be the crossing of a major threshold into the "cosmic" aspects of the Marvel comics universe. For the first time in any version of the Marvel movie mythos, we could be leaving the security of not just a city setting, but a terrestrial setting altogether. There is a possibility that such a thing could alienate the average moviegoer. While one could argue that Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer had already done so with the Silver Surfer and "Gas Cloud Galactus," it's still quite a step from a group of aliens invading the Earth in a 50's schlock, Invasion of the Body Snatchers kind of way. Just thinking of the Skrulls as being in the same universe as Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man, leaves one scratching at the head.

However, on the flip-side, based on the success of the Iron Man films, and the possible success of Thor and Captain America, this aspect could have the potential to expand the realm of what's relatable to the average moviegoer. In that sense, a successful outing with a Skrulls storyline could lead Marvel to entertain putting more of their cosmic mythos into films.

At the end of the day, these are just rumors. Plus, I'm sure the film's direction (be it in the hands of Joss Whedon or someone else,) will keep things anchored just enough in the realm of what's relatable for the viewer who's just looking to chomp on some popcorn while watching explosions and asses getting kicked by superheroes. Because if there was any comic film that absolutely cannot be screwed-up, this is the one.

Whatever happens, with whoever, it's all going down when The Avengers hits theaters on May 4, 2012.
