Let me put out a hypothetical situation. You're sitting at a bar and enjoying a few beers when a man with bandaged hands shows up and points a gun at you. Which of the following thoughts are first to go through your mind?

A. "Oh my god, I don't want to die."

B. "Call the cops! He's got a gun!"

C. "Oh cool, this must be tied into that new Splinter Cell: Conviction video game, available now on Xbox 360!"

Apparently New Zealand-based marketing firm Monaco Corporation thought the natural reaction would be C, but the correct answer was unsurprisingly a mixture of A and B. According to the New Zealand Herald, a man with bandaged hands approached a bar called Degree on Friday night and started pointing a gun at patrons. Police arrived on the scene only to find that the gun was made of plastic and it was all a stunt to promote Splinter Cell.

"We do apologize, we shouldn't have had guns down there," said Duane Mutu, Monaco's marketing manager. "It was just marketing gone wrong."

Congrats, Monaco. You just made the dead goat stunt for God of War seem sane.

Where's option D. "Oh cool, this must be tied into that new Condemned video game Monolith hasn't bothered to announce yet." I mean, crazy hobo in a bar with bandaged hands is sort of Ethan Thomas' routine, isn't it? Having him pick up a chair leg and bat at imaginary tar creatures brought on by his alcohol addiction would have helped the authenticity.

I need to get out more.

True, I don't think they understand their demographic.

Or do they? This stunt made big(ish) news for being a flop, but what if getting busted for a failed PR stunt was the real PR stunt? I mean, it's most likely gotten more attention than if the initial stunt had worked. Which means either they intentionally did it, which makes them cynical pricks, or it was a legitimate cock-up, which makes them idiotic fuckwits.

Ok, now I'm turning into a conspiracy theorist. Someone shoot me.

true

yet i'm not more inclined to buy the game because of their stupid stunt so technically they gained nothing by making us lol over it.

I think most people had already made up their minds whether or not they were going to get the game, so I doubt it helped them at all in the long run.

The question now is where do PR cock-ups go from here? Sony's dead goat set the bar pretty high, this has managed to raise it, so what misguided marketing ploys can we expect now?

Don't give Channel 9 credit, Patrick Swayze was doing it earlier with Ghost 2.
