I had about 5 or 6 lined up last few days but ended up closing them out. Those few picked from dozens of stories. The stories keep coming though, so onward forward (if I can muster the energy). Sinkhole in The Villages threatens 2 homes ![]() This sinkhole was growing April 19, 2014 near 2 houses in The Villages retirement community in Sumter County. (Helicon Property Restoration, Helicon Property Restoration / April 19, 2014) April 19, 2014 A large sinkhole has opened up under two houses in The Villages. A picture provided by Helicon Property Restoration, which is working to stabilize the hole, shows a house teetering at the edge of the 60-feet-deep-by-50-feet-wide hole, which extends toward a neighbor's driveway and has gobbled up a large piece of the front yard. A smaller sinkhole appeared at the site on Chalmer Terrace about three weeks ago, said Battalion Chief Pete Carpenter of The Villages Fire Rescue. Helicon workers were almost finished filling it when they went home for the night Friday, he said. By morning, after it rained, a second hole had opened up. "It's one big hole right now," he said Saturday. No evacuations were necessary because the owners of both homes are up north now, Carpenter said, but the area is roped off. Workers spent Saturday dumping 15 truckloads of concrete into the hole and "hadn't put a dent in it." "It's just continuing to grow," Carpenter said. The Villages is a sprawling 55-and-older community that straddles Sumter, Lake and Marion counties. The sinkhole is on the Sumter side. The rainy season, which is starting in Florida, increases the chance of sinkholes, experts say, "It's Florida," Carpenter said. "There are sinkholes everywhere." http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/local/breakingnews/os-sinkhole-the-villages-20140419,0,4201264.story |

I won't bother to tell you how hard it was to get this story and picture. Wink Sinkhole Growing, Sheriff Concerned About Public Safety Posted: Apr 16, 2014 8:28 PM PST Updated: Apr 16, 2014 9:17 PM PST ![]() WINKLER COUNTY - The Wink sinkholes have been the talk of the town since they were first discovered several years ago, but now one of those sinkholes is causing some serious concerns. "It's a couple, three football fields, and it's probably 125 feet deep," Winkler Co. Sheriff George Keely said. For years, the wink sinkholes have been capturing the curiosity of locals and out-of-towners, but "Wink Sink # 2" has Sheriff Keely worried. "It's real interesting but it's real eerie," he said."You shouldn't be out here if you don't need to be out here. I don't like to be out here." That's because the sinkhole is growing. "It's dangerous, the roads are moving, " Sheriff Keely said. "The roads actually lift up in places and drop in places." Large cracks run down county roads near the sinkhole and huge crevices have formed in the ground. Whatever's happening underneath became evident last week when a big rig made a trip out on one of the county roads. "It cracked, the road itself cracked," Sheriff Keely said. "The first crack we actually had in that county road was about a foot wide and it was an asphalt crack. Now that same crack has widened to about three and half, four feet wide." After the road split last week, crews filled it with kaliche but holes are still popping up. "A lot of them are oilfield traffic and 80,000 pound trucks," Sheriff Keely said. "I'm just concerned the stress from the weight of the trucks is gonna cause the damage to escalate quicker." Sheriff Keely said he's not sure what the long term answer is but they are monitoring the area. "There's a commission that's looking into all this and has been studying it, they were out here last week," he said. For now, Sheriff Keely is reminding residents that your curiosity could cost you. "If they do come out here and they trespass, they're going to get arrested." http://www.newswest9.com/story/25269082/wink-sinkhole-growing-sheriff-concerned-about-public-safety |

Auburn city truck swallowed by sinkhole at Hickory Dickory Park ![]() Fri Apr 11, 2014. From staff reports Auburn's Hickory Dickory Park will be closed to the public until further notice after a sewer line collapse caused a sinkhole in the park's parking lot late Friday afternoon. A city of Auburn truck was swallowed by the sinkhole. "It's not a common occurrence, but it does happen," Mikel Thompson, the city's collection system manager, said of sinkholes. The Auburn Rotary Club work day slated for Saturday will continue, but Rotarians are asked to park along Hickory Lane. http://www.oanow.com/news/auburn/article_51a5705c-c1d1-11e3-ac08-0017a43b2370.html |

Armala locals scared as yet another sinkhole forms SANTOSH POKHAREL POKHARA, March 24: Frequent formation of large sinkholes over the last three months has terrified the locals of Armala VDC, Kaski district. Due to recent rainfall, the formation of sinkholes in Armala locality has now intensified. According to local resident Krishna Prasad Poudel, the ground at his buffalo shed sank around 4:30 a.m. on Monday. However, the buffalo is safe. The shed bloc with its corrugated roofing has collapsed and the haystack there has also fallen down. ![]() “All of a sudden, I heard a load sound and soon a sinkhole appeared. Acting promptly, I was able to rescue the buffalo. The more we filled the sinkhole with earth, the deeper it grew,” said Poudel. He added, “I was afraid as our dwelling is right next to the damaged shed. So we kept on filling the sinkhole but even after 27 trips with the tractor trailer to fetch earth we could barely fill the hole.” The latest sinkhole to surface in the locality, which is the deepest so far, is at a distance from the previous sinkholes. Locals here speculate that the sinkholes have resulted from the land turning into wetland following recent rainfall in Pokhara and adjoining areas. “Such being the situation during winter, what would it be like during the monsoon?” said another local, Parbati Aryal, adding, “Where to move and what if our house sinks at night while we are asleep?” According to her, locals are scared as the sinkholes that appeared recently are on higher ground. Describing the situation as having worsened, Ram Prasad Parajuli, secretary at Armala Disaster-Induced Concern and Construction Committee, informed that Rs 1.5 million provided by the government earlier has been spent constructing some canals and embankments along with some repair work. He further said, “The previous budget was not enough for construction of the infrastructure required for managing underground water. We are waiting for additional budget funds as assured by the government following expressions of concern over the matter by Prime Minister Sushil Koirala.” A great disaster is sure to take place if it is not prevented before the monsoon starts, according to Kamal Dwibedi, a government official involved in a recent study carried out following the appearance of the sinkholes. He said excessive excavation of rock and sand from lower levels has weakened the upper surfaces. A geophysical survey is needed to study the internal structure, he added.
