Deaf, blind dog rescued from sinkhole in Frederick

Published: March 31

A 14-year-old deaf and blind dog was rescued Sunday from a sinkhole in Frederick.

More than 25 rescue workers from at least five different departments in the area spent seven hours trying to rescue the dog — a Lhasa Apso named Samantha. She fell into the hole, which rescue officials said was roughly two feet wide and eight feet deep, while walking with her owner in a grassy area near Old Farm Road and Wainwright Court.

The owner yelled for help after Samantha fell into the hole, according to a report from Abby Theodros with WHAG-TV, the NBC affiliate in Western Maryland. Area neighbors heard her and called for help.

Rescue officials pumped warm air into the hole and monitored the air flow. The dog was also given toys and food in “an effort to try and coax her out,” said Capt. Kevin Fox with the Frederick County Fire department.

Rescuers used “flexible pipping to coax the dog from the deepest part of the hole” Fox said. They were then able to harness the dog and lift Samantha out of the hole, he said.

Samantha underwent x-rays and a bath at a vet’s office and was later able to go home.

The sinkhole and area around it are being monitored by engineers and public works officials, but there is believed to be no threat to homes or roads in the area.

Sinkhole suddenly appears in Staffordshire carpark

A huge sinkhole appears suddenly in the carpark of a bed and breakfast in north Staffordshire, forcing the business to close

12:23PM BST 07 Apr 2014

Timelapse footage of the view overlooking a bed and breakfast carpark shows a hole in a cordoned-off square becoming bigger and bigger.

Phil Tester, owner of The Laurels in Oakamoor, said the large hole opened up on Thursday morning and now measured more than 10 feet wide and was continuing to expand.

Deep water has gathered at the bottom of the sinkhole, making it difficult to measure the full size of the chasm.

The hole appeared followed drilling work at the property to check damage caused by a nearby landslide last year, that has caused the business to close for two weeks.

UPDATE: Sink Hole Develops in Family's Yard

BEAVERCREEK -- A family woke up this morning to a giant hole in their front yard.

The massive sink hole was discovered at a home on King James Drive.

Firefighters say it is 25-30 feet deep.

City engineers examined blueprints from the neighborhood and didn't find any trace of an existing hole underground. Perhaps an old farm pipe may have caused the ground to collapse.

Right now, the hole is boarded up, and it is up to the homeowners to get it fixed.

Several homes including Ms Tatarnikova's have completely vanished into the hole.

'I was watching TV and then it started flickering and the lights started swinging. I opened the front door and saw a massive pit appearing in the ground,' she said.

'I ran back into the house and grabbed my son Kiril out of his cot and ran out through the back door. Seconds later the entire house disappeared into the hole.

'I still can't believe that I have lost everything. I don't have any of the official paperwork from my passport through to my son's hospital documents, with his toys and all our clothes. Everything is gone.'

She said local officials had promised to help with rehousing and covering the loss of everything, but so far nothing had happened.

Wow. When it's not your time, it's not your time.

This winter has been really bad for potholes. They truly have been vicious this year. So any time you see a puddle, you didn't know if it was a huge hole or what. But that is piddly compared to real sinkholes.

But they are happening all over. The ones in cities seem to be from "seeping water"...whether from a leaking pipe, or water filtering down to caves underground and opening up a crack for dirt to slip down into and eventually get a big hole over a long period of time. So now it's 2014. Many towns had watermains inlaid around 1885-1930's. Then you had the 'afterthewar' building boom of the 50's. Every town has a water tower....and large towns have all those really huge ones, usually several. So think of all that water...tons daily being sucked out of the earth up to the surface for use. Plus all that fracking.

And they want to build a pipeline on the surface....right where? Oh yeah, on top of the part that supposed to cave in....the aquafers that are sinking. No wonder the world thinks Americans are so dumb.
