Workers perplexed over growing sinkhole menace

Posted on: 6:22 pm, April 10, 2014, by Wayne Covil

PETERSBURG, Va.(WTVR) –It may be blocked by barrels, but some employees of a nearby business, still have to drive past a sink hole to get into the business.

Several workers tell CBS 6 the hole is getting bigger every day and their concern is that one day their car may drop down into the hole, which is about six feet deep and goes much deeper under the asphalt.

Workers are worried the road could collapse if there isn’t enough structural support underneath.

The problem is erosion under the North West Street.

A temporary fix by the city a few weeks ago, was washed away during a recent rain storm.

Some nearby workers say the hole keeps expanding and that they have reason to be concerned.

A few years ago, on the same street, another sink hole opened up where a mini van was parked.

A wrecker had to be called in to pull it out.

A nearby homeowner says, she’s called the city twice in the past year because of a water leak on the road.

The Director of Public Works visited the site around 1pm Thursday and decided the street needed to be blocked off, to better protect the public.

Steven Hicks says the company that marks water and sewer lines on the road have been contacted and as soon as they complete that task, the city will begin repairs.

Sinkhole large enough to swallow a car, or two, in Detroit

Car-sized sinkhole opens up on Linwood at Monterey Avenue in Detroit

DETROIT -There is a large sinkhole -- large enough to swallow a car, or two -- in the middle of Linwood near Monterey Avenue in Detroit.

The hole in the asphalt, which is about 30 feet wide, has forced crews to shut down Linwood in both directions.

The big black pipe is a gas line. The concern is the gas line could be compromised, but there is no smell of natural gas and no evacuations.

'Riser' break caused erosion in soil

According to the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department, a contractor had run a camera up a sewer line to check for ruptures when he noticed the pavement buckling at the intersection of Linwood and Monterey Avenue. He called in other crews while the pavement started to give way.

The break was in a "riser," which is part of the sewer system.

"That riser that lets the sewer drop down into our larger line collapsed," said Darryl Latimer, deputy director at the Water and Sewerage Department. "It eroded the soil over a period of time and caused a water main -- about an 8-inch water main -- to collapse."

The repairs could take a week or two, but it will depend on what crews find when they get down into the hole.

Gigantic sinkhole opens on Detroit street; 2 vehicles nearly fall in

The sinkhole on Linwood in west Detroit might take a week to fix, a city official
said. Large enough to swallow two cars, it began as an ordinary road repair problem

A yawning, nearly 30-foot-wide and 16-foot-deep sinkhole that could swallow two cars shut down a portion of Linwood Avenue on Detroit’s west side this afternoon. Authorities say it could take up to a week to repair.

Water and Sewerage Department Deputy Director Darryl Latimer said crews arrived on the scene at 2:30 to repair a hole in the road. As they began the repairs, the road began to open up, he said. Latimer said he thinks it could have been started by a collapsed sewer pipe.

“It may have been a collapse in the riser that started the void,” Latimer said, adding that a water main break occurred as well. Latimer said the sinkhole also exposed a gas line. He said the department was working to contain the situation so the sinkhole doesn’t increase in size.

“It’s not a safe situation,” he said. Several residents stood behind the caution tape that encircled the sinkhole to get a better look at the work, which included several excavation vehicles and equipment. Officials said the sinkhole is large enough to fit at least two cars.

Timothy Jackson and his mother live on Monterey Street nearby. Jackson said he saw the sinkhole form and watched as two vehicles nearly fell in.

“A big truck came by and almost fell in, and then a car came and swerved to stop falling,” he said.

Jackson said his family didn’t feel safe being so close to an exposed gas line and they were concerned the sinkhole could expand in size.

Mercedes Troy and her daughter live a few blocks away, but she said she drives on Linwood every day.

“You see stuff like this on the news, but you don’t think it could happen where you live,” Troy said.

DTE Energy utility workers were expected to shut off the gas line to allow crews from the water department back in. Latimer said one customer was without water late Friday afternoon, but the department was working to get it back on.

Large sinkhole causes concern in Wahiawa

By Nestor Garcia Updated: Friday, March 28, 2014, 9:41 am Published: Thursday, March 27, 2014, 9:58 pm

A sinkhole opened up on a property on Dole Road in Wahiawa Thursday afternoon.

Police were called, and they covered it up and blocked it off.

The resident says this is not the first time this has happened on the property.

Amateur video showed the hole before it was covered.

The curious gathered around it but with the ground saturated by a recent downpour, no one wanted to stand on the edge for too long.

Sasha Terry came home after a doctor’s appointment, and found the scene in her front yard.

At first, it was just a couple of feet deep.

“It was no more than two feet – two feet deep,” said Terry. “and then it dropped to 30 feet, more than 30 feet.”

She went on to say that, “it’s an old cesspool. They (the landowners) tried to pack it down before when it opened up but when the heavy rain comes down and softens up all the dirt it will make it sink even more. But this time the water got super, super down there.”

Holes have opened up before in other areas around the island.

One incident took place in Enchanted Lake 9 years ago, the result of a leaky pipe or an old septic tank.

And in 2007, a water main break opened a sinkhole, also in Enchanted Lake.

In order to stabilize the hole, the ground has to dry up, but weather forecasts call for more rain in Wahiawa, and it will be heavy at times.

“More rain, more water,” said a worried Terry. “It’s going to soften the dirt around it and get bigger.”

But not according a retired geologist with 38 years of experience with the Board of Water Supply.

Chester Lao says most cesspools were dug 30 feet deep.

“It won’t get any deeper,” said Lao. “If anything, it will get shallower because of all the stuff that went into the cesspool is piled up on the bottom,” he said.

KHON2 asked Lao if other homeowners who live near abandoned cesspools will run into a problem like this as well.

“Yes, I’m afraid so,” said Lao. “Especially for older homes built in the 30′s, 40′s and early 50′s even.”

He added, “So, we can expect more of these, not just in Wahiawa, but in various other places.”

When the ground finally does get dry, Terry says the landowners will probably do what they did the last time, and that is pour concrete, asphalt and dirt into the hole, and seal it up tight with a concrete cover
