30-foot sinkhole develops behind Federal Courthouse in Boston

Sink hole behind Fed Courthouse Northern Av

The weather in New England has been chaotic over the last few months, but there hasn't been anything that really qualifies as a natural disaster. Until Wednesday.

Several news outlets reported that a large sinkhole appeared behind Joe Moakley Federal Courthouse on Northern Avenue in South Boston.

No injuries were reported and that the area was fenced off as a crew worked to contain and repair the damage. A 30-foot sinkhole certainly isn't the worst this country has seen, but for Boston, that's pretty bad.

BostInno said that Boston Police Captain John Greland's tweet (see above) was the first report of the sinkhole. But Wednesday night, local news outlets were on scene with live coverage.

Resident says he was 'blown away' by sight of latest sinkhole in Harrisburg

Workers make repairs at the scene of a water main break in the 1400 block
of South 14th Street in Harrisburg, where a resulting sinkhole caused evacuation
of seven homes. UGI has shut off service for a two-block area, since gas lines
were exposed in the sinkhole. The water shut-off has affected about 45 houses
on South 14th Street south of Magnolia Street.

March 20, 2014

HARRISBURG — Gilbert Akers was asleep in his South 14th Street home Thursday morning when he was awoken by a city police officer knocking at his door.

The officer told him to evacuate, Akers said. That’s when Akers peered out his front door and saw the massive sinkhole that had opened in a front yard across the street.

The sinkhole — big enough to swallow a hefty sports utility vehicle — was a sight that made Akers stare in amazement for a few moments.

“I was blown away by it,” said Akers, a retired schoolteacher. “They said it happened suddenly and that’s what really concerns me.”

The sinkhole also stretched out into the middle of the street. It was reportedly caused by a water main break and forced the evacuation of seven homes. UGI shut off gas service in a two-block area, affecting 53 of its customers. Water had also been shut off in the block.

The sinkhole is just the latest to open in the city, which has experienced several similar incidents in recent months due to its aging infrastructure.

Akers, who was waiting the situation out Thursday morning inside his home, said he initially thought a sinkhole had opened only in the middle of the street. He realized the problem was much more concerning when he got a look at his neighbor’s yard.

Becky Wallace, who said she has lived on the block for 14 years, said she was also alerted Thursday morning by a police officer who knocked on her door and told her to evacuate. She had the day off from work.

Wallace, who returned around 11:30 a.m. to her home to check on her dogs, said a similar situation occurred several years ago on the same block.

“[My friend’s] father, his truck fell through the ground,” Wallace said of a previous sinkhole.

Many other residents of the 1400 block of South 14th Street had left their homes by the time repair work started on the water main. Wallace said she was staying at her daughter’s house awaiting word on the repairs.

Residents of the area have been advised to go to the Hall Manor Community Center to use the bathroom. A shelter was also reportedly set up at the nearby Mount Olive Baptist Church, but it appeared Thursday morning that no one was there.

'Giant 40ft sinkhole' appears in Stockport park pond and drains water in a matter of HOURS

Posted Image

A giant 40ft sinkhole has appeared in a Stockport park pond and drained nearly all the water in a matter of HOURS.

The colossal hole has been described as a "giant plughole" after it was spotted some time on Thursday morning funnelling water down to a nearby waterfall.

Work to preserve wildlife living in the pond is currently underway, while walkers and park enthusiasts have reacted with horror at the state of the former beauty spot.

Jean Goulden, chair of the Friends of Abney Hall Park, said: “You could see the water swirling around just like there was a giant plughole.

“It’s terrible for the community as it’s a much-loved area for families and dog walkers, it’s our little bit of countryside in the middle of the village and we feel very lucky to have it, so we’re hoping something can be done as soon as possible.”

Kate Peacock, who runs the nearby Abney Gardens Community Cafe - and even gave her two children the middle name ‘Abney’ after the park - said: “It’s the heart of the park and we’re determined to do whatever it takes to save it.

“We noticed the water had gone down slightly on Monday, then a bit more on Tuesday and by Wednesday we thought ‘something’s going on here’ and started reporting it to all the relevant agencies.

“It’s unbelievable that you’ve got a giant sinkhole in the middle of Cheadle”

The pond was built in the 1970s and is currently home to a range of fish as well as mallards, swans and moorhens.

Some of the fish are thought to have been drained away and others are left in a small pocket of remaining water in the middle of the pond.

The Environment Agency has said there is no immediate risk to wildlife and no pollution to other waterways.

A Stockport Council spokesman said the pond is no longer losing water and work to assess the situation is ongoing.

He said: “The water that continues to flow out of the pond is running at a rate similar to that which is flowing in. The advice from the Environment Agency is that the fish are fine where they are.

“The outflow from the pond has been traced and there has been no flooding of surrounding land or property.”

Sinkholes, potholes, what next?

Potholes at Washington and Rural streets last month.

March 18, 2014
If you think a flat tire is the worst that can happen when driving across the ubiquitous patches of loose or missing pavement throughout Indianapolis, ask the person who was behind the wheel of the Indianapolis Fire Department’s Engine 29 Monday night.

As firefighters rushed to a small Southside fire, the truck was partially swallowed by a 4 feet-by-8 feet sinkhole at Boyd and Finley avenues caused by a collapsed sewer line.

Whether sinkhole, pothole or some twisted combination of the two, the craters in the roadways have hobbled — and now gobbled — vehicles this year. And for the short term, anyway, our treacherous travels will continue.

After being freed from the hole, Engine No. 29 was inspected and put back into service. The Southside fire was minimal and quickly extinguished.

Dan Considine of Citizens Energy Group said the sinkhole was the result of the collapse of a combined sanitary and storm sewer.

“Sewer and water main collapses are becoming more common throughout Indianapolis because of aging infrastructure,” Considine said. “Citizens currently has water and wastewater rate increase requests with the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission to fund more than $500 million in improvements to the systems over the next two years.”

The last time a sinkhole like that fed on an unsuspecting vehicle in Indianapolis was Sept. 9. A water main break caused a portion of English Avenue to collapse and swallow a Jeep.

While sinkholes are rare, Indianapolis motorists can attest that potholes are common, particularly this year. Marion County on Tuesday had nearly 3,000 potholes, according to the online pothole viewer maintained by the Indianapolis Department of Public Works.

DPW spokeswoman Lesley Gordon said that since Dec. 1, more than 10,000 pothole service requests have been closed. A closed request indicates the repair of a pothole or the determination that the pothole is either the responsibility of another party or was a duplicate request taken out of the system.

From Dec. 1 to mid-March, 13,209 potholes were reported overall, Gordon said. Last year during that period: 2,835.

To keep up with the crumbling roads, DPW joined forces with the Indiana Department of Transportation and Rieth-Riley Construction to start hot asphalt production earlier than normal. Cold patch typically used during the winter months doesn’t hold up as well.

With fewer freezing nights in the forecast, Gordon said the formation of potholes should slow in the coming weeks.

“We’ve been doing as much as we can for as long we can,” Gordon said. “We fill potholes every day.”

Yes, old cesspits, old wells I can see. But seems strange to me that all this is happening like in the last 10 years and is getting much worse. Dropping water tables can't be the sole cause of this, unless water was taken from earth, as in mega-quantities. Or there was some kind of earth-shifting going on, and that anything else from olden times exacerbated it expotentially or something. Now that 'earth birthing a new moon' theory is scarey. Something breaking a seal inside the earth and getting out is even scarier. This would be the shift in human consciousness to 'allow' things to happen....like thinking God, angels and demons don't exist. As human consciousness is very much tied to our earth, as the human collective energy affects the earth energies.
