Reflect on the past
Dismal memories evoke pain
Life is filled with disheartening paths

Desire, wishing, longing
Open palm, nothing held
A life long of wanting; here, having nothing

My heart has known only half mast
Going nowhere, nothing to gain
Tears come for that wish and anew, wash my torn soul in a misery bath

Alone, never belonging
Another whisper, like a cruel joke, my heart is stilled
Right there in ear shot, we see yet do not hear, another glimpse resulting in vain clutching

Life teases with love
Just beyond the reality of existing
We only talk and never live, distance prevents us to evolve

Very lovely. Right at the 'heart strings'. (Revised.)

Well, poetry doesn't have to rhyme. Here's a reference.

When we're young and optimistic, we look forward to a happy content future... a mate to love and enjoy life with, a roof over our heads, the fruits from our labors. Simple things that should make a man happy and content.

A few too many people have experienced far less than what they'd once anticipated. Those are the ones who have built more character through intense struggles and hardship, and 'know what it is'.
