I don't know if the freethinkers have tackled this one yet so i wanted to a make a thread about it. ASMR autonomous sensory meridian response may seem like a frivilous waste of time to those who never experienced it. For those who do seem to experience this response it can be quite thought provoking. The response seems to be triggered by soft sounds combined with an activity that can be easily viewed objectively. At least thats what I experience. The confusing part is why does something so unrelated to common pleasure-related activities result in an extremely pleasurable experience. I immediately thought of: http://www.asmrlab.com/common-asmr-triggers/ I must admit that I had never heard of Bob Ross before I discovered ASMR, and chances are that if you live outside America this will be the case for you too. Technically speaking Bob Ross is simply provides a good combination of many of the other common triggers, but because of his widespread popularity as an ASMR trigger I thought he was worth mentioning on his own. The great thing about being triggered by Bob Ross is that you can buy full length DVDs so you can quickly and easily get some ASMR going from the comfort of your couch. http://www.asmrlab.com/common-asmr-triggers/ I have had the Bob Ross tingles! I guess i'm lucky. It isn't just extreme relaxation, its like a wave of pleasure that doesn't hurt in any way. There was a Doctor Who episode back in the 80's that really triggered my meridian response too. Sleeping with a fan blowing on your face triggers it too i think. It is not the same thing as getting your hair cut or having the one you love kiss the back of your neck, although those are triggers for the response probably. It seems to be something that the person experiencing it can completely control. http://www.gizmag.com/asmr-free-tingles-relaxation-youtube- Some people believe ASMR is a residual response from early childhood, an echo of the calming, soothing effect of a mother's voice on an infant, coupled with the close, caring personal attention a parent can give. Others look further back in our evolutionary development, proposing that perhaps the sensation goes back to our roots as primates, a sensory reward for submitting ourselves to nit- picking and grooming by other members of our groups. Either way, I don't believe there's any current research being undertaken even to prove the existence of the effect, or study what the brain is doing during ASMR tingles. http://www.gizmag.com/asmr-free-tingles-relaxation-youtube- asmrtists/27667/ here is a link to the history of ASMR: http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/autonomous-sensory-meridian- response-asmr and a link to videos meant to trigger the response: http://www.reddit.com/r/asmr/ this is actually a very interesting development in human conciousness I think. i love you all as i love myself |

i seem to have messed up two links so ill try to post it again: http://www.gizmag.com/asmr-free-tingles-relaxation-youtube-asmrtists/27667/pictures http://www.gizmag.com/asmr-free-tingles-relaxation-youtube-asmrtists/27667/ hope it works it was a great article. As for the knowyourmeme.com I guess you just have to search ASMR on it, but it goes through the history of the awareness of this phenomenon on the internet which I believe wasn't untill 2007. |

Nice post When you said Bob Ross I immediately knew what you were talking about! I used to think I could paint, or maybe I should say he made it look easy for a normal person to at least try it. However, in watching, I would always fall asleep, his voice was so c a l m.....soothing.....relaxing.....safe..... because he was always saying he was painting a 'happy tree' or a 'happy cloud', etc. So I checked one link and saw, yep, the whisk looking gizmo. I always saw those in the little mall-carts and thought they were foo-foo, until they convinced me to try it. Surprisingly pleasant feeling. This all relates to body meridians and their manipulation by whatever means. Yoga, mudras, tapping, accupressure, etc. Many don't realize that is what yoga is all about...stretching or putting pressure on different meridians or connecting different meridians. When you have a headache and you press on the offending spot, you are doing it naturally. When any spot starts hurting on my body I press on it for a while, jiggle it around, dig a little deeper, get that pain out. It really helps on my body. Think I would be a lot sicker otherwise. Of course there are complete systems about it, acupuncture, tai chi, all that stuff. I have found the book by Claire on Trigger Points (he has a 2nd edition out now) has been the most helpful in everyday life, and feel some of the things in there have saved my life two times. edit: and also helped me regain my ability to keep walking one time. Don't be fooled as this can be extremely painful to the point of tears, but keep doing it and over time (hours, days, weeks) it becomes less painful. The body is electrical. Anytime there is a kink in the system, you get a kink in your health; not only via the meridians, this especially applies to each individual cell and the nucleus inside it. That is where the 'garbage in, garbage out' thing comes to play. Anyway, hope this helps somebody out there.

Dunno what happened to edit #2. I was saying about going to the beauty shop and how good it felt for someone else to shampoo your hair and then sit and let them comb and cut and style it. Very soothing. |
