Rome boy gets stuck in sink hole on front lawn

ROME, N.Y. (WKTV) - A normal school day morning turned into a scary scene at a residence in Rome, Friday.

Andrew Millson, 9, was waiting for the bus on his front lawn, when he fell into a puddle of mud.

The puddle turned out to be a sink hole, and Andrew was unable to pull himself out. His brother, Mason, summoned their babysitter to come outside for help after he noticed Andrew struggling to get free.

The babysitter, and a random passerby pulled him out of the sink hole after an extended period of time.

""He couldn't get out himself, he was actually up to his waist they had to actually pull him out," said Andrew's mother, Kari Tollefsrud. "He panicked a little bit and they said the more he panicked, the more he sank in. But they ended up getting him out, he went in the house, changed his clothes, cleaned up really quick and still got in the school bus on time."

The remarkable story came to a relieving end on this day, however, Tollefsrud said that a water main break that has been causing problems since late December is the culprit that caused the hole.

She also said that the City has came to her residence a few times to pump water out of the whole, but it continued to be an issue for a month.

Officials within the Rome Water Department have said that the problem has been fixed, with a new patch of asphalt being installed this morning following the incident.

43-year-old mortgage banker Mark Mihal was playing golf with friends when he fell into a sinkhole

A claustrophobic mortgage banker has told the story of how a round of golf ended up with him plunging into a sinkhole that opened as he walked across the 14th hole.

Mark Mihal, 43, and his partner Mike Peters, were easily beating regular opponents Ed Magaletta and Hank Martinez during a game in early March last year.

Mr Mihal and Mr Peters had both outdriven the other pair on the 14th hole of the Annbriar golf course in Waterloo, Illinois.

Each landed the ball nicely on the fairway, leaving Mr Magaletta and Mr Martinez at the edge of the woods trying to clear a bunker.

But while Mr Mihal was waiting for Mr Peters to hit his second shot, he noticed a shallow, bathtub-size depression in the grass of the fairway.

It was out of place on the well-kept course, and looked as if it would be tricky to play out of.

He walked over and stepped into the depression - and promptly vanished.

(Note - there's a long section in a blue box starting under the header SINKHOLES: WHEN THE GROUND OPENS UP BENEATH YOUR FEET that cuts right in the middle of this story. When you find it skip over it, at least so you can get through the story).

This Bacardi Limon ad (2002) presents layered worlds reflected in its miror - the fantasy of the bar scene and the fantasy of the dream girl who exists almost outside of the bar - it's as though one fantastical world is framed by another. The viewer is invited to participate merely by stepping into the 'pleasures' of the glass. Is this not a copy of a relationship that has no original?

I was reading Baudrillard's piece in Lemert's social theory reader that discusses Disney (524-529) where he says, "It is no longer a question of a false representation of reality (ideology), but of concealing the fact that the real is no longer real, and thus of saving the reality principle." This commentary works very much along the same lines of this ad and others we have seen. We become so lost in the fantasy vertigo of these images - in interpreting them to suit our desires and thus falling into their worlds, that they become part of our constructed 'reality.' Baudrillard also talks about the "successive phases of the image" - and the way that our realities are "perverted," "masked," and then made "absent" until there is "no relation to any reality whatever; it is its own pure simulacrum" (527).

An astute find Yass. I think this is the whole crux of it all: movies, violent games, virutal pc worlds, cyber relationships, and the darker side of the internet, and even the lighter side--but info on how to do negative things w/normal how-to's.

Like it was said elsewhere....the computer separates one from reality, it itself is a "form" of virtuality. It separates a person from having a REAL face-to-face relationship w/another living being! Instead of a person teaching you, it is an impersonal non-valuing machine. Thus all the social red flags are not nipped by the machine like a person would normally do to correct the person when societal IMPRESSIONS ARE FIRST FORMED through the growing years. Until they have children, love them and then worry over them, there is a definite level of 'coldness' inculcated into today's generation that has to be overcome. In many it is subtle, but in others it is not. What bothers me is that it's so prevalent and thus accepted as "the norm" to think in certain ways now that were not normal 15 yrs ago even. I don't even know how to describe it...as I see it in tiny increments in attitudes and values.

It seems this has all merely made any age gaps worse. Like humans are devolving or something.

I think you got it in a nutshell there epona. It takes some for me to get my head around and grasp it, but it's there.

This hallucination is dangerous, because it disciplines us in inconspicuous ways. The Q/A "field of control" has replaced violence or other forms of direct discipline! "A diffraction of models plays the regulative role." It makes standards/laws/institutions seem rational, logical, moral because they are disciplined by participants.
Good read, if you can get your head around:

Simulacra - in the era of television - are copies of things that no longer have an original (or never had one to begin with).

April Jones' family call on public to keep backing their fight against child pornography in 2014

In a new year's message, the murdered schoolgirl's parents said they would continue their campaign for a new law in their daughter's name

The family of murdered schoolgirl April Jones has called on the public to continue supporting their fight against child pornography on the internet into 2014.
-----
His trial highlighted the full extent that vile online child pornography had played in his warped mind before he abducted and murdered April.

After his conviction, April's parents appeared on TV and spoke of their campaign to stop indecent images of children on the internet.

I mentioned this family in regards to the sadistic evil movie (simulacra) that fed Ian Watkins fantasies. He shouldn't have had access to any such materials nor should anyone else have access.
When I was looking at a site (like imbd if not imbd) of that movie which was his favorite (the rape of a newborn baby) I saw there where it said "People who watched this also watched these titles" and they were all porn, sex oriented, meant to stimulate and arouse desires. That anyone could get off on or be sexually aroused or stimulated by a movie about the violation of a newly born infant is beyond my my comprehension that they'd let it fly.
The wiki says the movie was banned in some places and is/was being investigated in others. Sorry if I've already mentioned this. My mind's not so sharp atm.

Baudrillard's name crops up in the best reads on the topic of simulcra.

Jean Baudrillard was one of the foremost intellectual figures of the late twentieth century and his work is currently reaching a new prominence in the English-speaking world. Known as the "high priest of postmodernity", Baudrillard never directly addressed theological concerns. However, his provocative analysis of the changing nature of reality, subjectivity and agency is of increasing importance to contemporary theology. Furthermore, his mode of cultural analysis (which he himself describes as "mystical") provides fruitful possibilities for theological reasoning in the post-idealist world he describes. James Walters provides the context of Baudrillard's writing and identifies key influences. He then sets out his core ideas, drawing in theological responses and relating them to theological concerns. Finally, he highlights some areas of his work of particular theological interest.
