Connecticut plane crash: Four to six feared dead in East Haven

The reason the plane crashed is not yet clear

Four to six people are feared dead after a small plane crashed into homes in the US state of Connecticut, accident investigators say.

The National Transportation Safety Board said there were casualty reports of two or three people in the aircraft and two or three on the ground.

Two children, aged one and 13, are feared dead in a house that was hit.

The plane took off from Teterboro Airport in New Jersey and crashed near Connecticut's Tweed New Haven airport.

Officials initially said three people were feared dead, including the propeller plane's pilot.

Two homes in the town of East Haven caught fire in the crash. One witness said a woman was screaming that her children were trapped inside.
'Total devastation'

Two bodies have been spotted inside a home that the plane crashed into, East Haven Fire Chief Douglas Jackson said.

East Haven Mayor Joseph Maturo, "Nobody has been recovered as of yet. Both parts of the houses are fully destroyed."

But the remains have not been removed yet as the property is unstable, he added.

"We haven't recovered anybody at this point and we presume there is going to be a very bad outcome," he said.

According to unconfirmed reports in US media, a former Microsoft executive, Bill Henningsgaard, and his son were aboard the aircraft.

The plane, a Rockwell International Turbo Commander 690B, crashed at about 11:25 local time (15:25 GMT) as it approached the airport in rainy weather, say officials.

Tweed's airport manager said the pilot had been speaking to air traffic control, but did not issue any distress calls.

"All we know is that it missed the approach and continued on," said Lori Hoffman-Soares. "There were no distress calls as far as we know."

According to local news reports, one of the houses was vacant and the other was the home of a mother with two children.

East Haven Mayor Joseph Maturo described a scene of "total devastation", according to NBC News.

Several emergency crews were dispatched to the scene.

With Tweed, I just wonder if there might be a link to Tweed

Harris Tweed woven in a herringbone twill pattern, mid-20th century

With Harris, I also know a guy in the Village where I used to stay while working at UKAEA Harwell, or could it also link to Rolf Harris and maybe Paint Brushes? Might there also be a link to the Number 81? With the Children and Tweed, might there be a link to Children in Need?
