Some personal experiences: In the 70's I actually slipped into a minister's conference in Tucson, AZ (Civic Center) and saw the old fart Herbert W. Armstrong (Worldwide Church of God--Saturday sabbath keepers) ranting and raving, pounding his fist demanding that everyone must send all their tithes directly to him or face damnation and excommunication. Heard it from the horse's mouth! His nasty, greedy disposition was deplorable. There had been some upheaval in his WCC kingdom and it appeared he was losing control--evident when his source of money started drying up. I got past his watch dog thugs at the door by telling them I had to deliver lunch to my husband--no lie, lunch was in hand. (Yes he had managed to sneak in ahead of me, as a "minister".) Today there are only splinter groups and Ronald Weinland is among them. Always investigate the source and history of a group or person and it should clear up any questions one might have. ---------------------------------------------- In the old days my husband and I enjoyed following cults and even attended (also sneaked in--in Tucson Civic Center) a Maharaji (spelling?) event -- the boy "god" who sat on a throne with his bare feet on a pillow and all his followers wore white robes. Everyone in the auditorium was swooning in unison like wheat wafting in the wind, when he graciously appeared. That is, except my husband and me. Real creepy, consequently we were stared down by those in charge and those around us so we got out of there real fast. Seeing this Boy God was so much more exciting than his dry, boring old highness Armstrong. We enjoyed following cults by investigating and knowing all about them. It can actually be quite enlightening and entertaining. (What can I say? Not much goes on in Tucson so when you hear about an infamous--or not--gathering at your local Civic Center or city park its time to hop in the car and get in the action.) Anyone remember Anita Bryant--the Christian singer who first spoke out against gays and subsequently lost her endorsement with Florida Orange Juice? Well she appeared at the Tucson Civic Center many years ago and there were lines of 100s of gay protesters physically blocking entrance to her performance and touting picket signs. They were also doing mock performances outside the arena. Well, radical Christians from the Door--started by the flamboyant adulteress Amy Simpleton McPherson--were verbally pouncing on the gays with Bible in hand--what a circus that was! Say, I got to personally talk with Joan Baez at the city park in Tucson during an anti-war rally when her husband was in the penitentiary in Florance for refusing to be drafted. |

Well, it helps to have cult awareness for one's own knowledge and understanding. To see and experience something first hand is a great learning exercise and more involved and interesting more so than just reading or learning about it in a book, classroom or lecture--although those are also quite good. It enhances one's wellbeing so that you aren't subject to the power of a cult and their brainwashing. Some people may not know how insidious cults can be and it can also better equip one to help others if necessary. P.S. Probably also for the same varied reasons we each hang out at this forum and to be more informed about what's really happening in the world. |

women are curious by nature, we want to look at everything, but cults are things that I never wanted to test or attend, because in a way it can twist the mind. but knowledge is power and I'm sure it helped you Debra see the other side. something I can't attend are all kind of rituals, too scary for me especially after seeing the "eyes wide shut" movie. Something that we don't know while attending all kind of cult is the energy of the words and encantations. Just listening to them create something inside. I don't know how to explain but the power of words does exist. |
