i heard Necra, i think, mention the movie 'fear and loathing in las vegas' written by hunter thompson, a kiddie porn/snuff producer from bohemian grove.
i got the movie and book from the library.

in the movie, johnny depp plays thompson who is a journalist sent to cover a race and a police convention.
he and 'his attorney' have a briefcase full of assorted illegal substances and they trip almost the entire time.
its a funny movie to me.... i really enjoyed it.

(did anyone notice the mangled, broken BAT on the ground after they stopped in the desert? depp used a flyswatter to shoo away the 'hallucinatory' bats as he drove...seems they were real after all)

i believe depp actually used what the attorney called Adrenal.
i think he really used it for the movie, and the reason i say this is the 'pirates' movie frame someone posted in here some time back, in which depps eyes are slitted.
i am thinking that this adrenal stuff mut have activated his reptilian dna.
in the movie that also seems to be the case with hunter thompson because after his trip on adrenal, a fully gown reptilian tail is now attached to his body.

a friend visiting here, stated depp is known for getting 'into' the character he plays and believes depp certainly took drugs during this movie to make his performnce more realistic, and does it for all of his movies..this person is a huge depp fan, fear/loathing his all-time favorite movie.... and says he bought the american flag used in the movie from ebay years go.
(the flag was accidently thrown out by another and hes still reeling)

a mention was also made in the movie, about how we dont want to know where adrenal comes from.
those of us here already know, dont we?

im waiting for part two of the story...its called 'where the buffalo roam' starring bill murray.
it is about what happened after the las vegas trip when hunter went back home and was then locked up in a mental facility.
sounds interesting.

im hoping to read all of his books.

thank U to whoever mentioned fear/loathing to begin with B)

and btw Necra, im almost finished with WINDSWEPT HOUSE. ;)

I don't think HST was either a rep or a bohemian grove stooge, he was a very sensitive human being, who perhaps could not say what he knew in a straightforward way.In the end, he was killed for it anyway.
For example, the scene in F and L, when checking in on arrival in Vegas, he sees the crowd at the bar like reps, ankle deep in blood.. there are some who believe he was warning us...way back when in what, 1970?
BTW, 'Buffalo' is one of my fave films, it was made way before the Depp film, and is much warmer in tone, and deals with his attorney's life and work as much as his own. Played by Peter Boyle, Lazlo the attorney achieves near legendary status, if only in HST's mind and those few of us who have seen the film.
Gonzo!

Fist of all, as far as the comparison to Fear & Loathing In Las Vegas (1998) goes, these films are completely different beasts. Fear & Loathing is a adaptation of a fictional work based on real events. Johnny Depp and Benicio Del Toro are playing Raoul Duke and Dr. Gonzo, not Hunter S. Thompson and Oscar Zeta Acosta. They are playing caricatures of real people, indirect representations funneled through HST's imagination and exaggeration. Where The Buffalo Roam is more based in reality. Bill Murray is directly playing Hunter S. Thompson as he writes his writings, Johnny Depp played a character from his writings, there is a massive difference. And as such, in my opinion, both films succeed brilliantly. Fear & Loathing In Las Vegas is a visually dazzling, imaginative, cinematic adaptation of HST's novel and Where The Buffalo Roam is a quirky, splendidly fun quasi-biographical journey and pure snapshot of life.

Bill Murray is fantastic in this film. His portrayal of HST is taken from life, more realistic, more from the man rather than from his text or the legend of HST. The whole film itself, mainly because of Murray's characterization and the realistic structured style of the abrupt interconnected randomness of everyday life, is infused with a undying sense of fun and love for words, imagination, writing, and the whole creative process, which seems to me to get more to the core of HST as a man than the various vignettes of Fear & Loathing.

Where The Buffalo Roam is wildly entertaining, frenziedly hilarious, and immeasurably fun. But when the general viewing audience, who presumably do not have a true passion for HST and his works, views both films and are given the choice between the legend and the man, they more often choose the legend, which is usually the trend in history.

Whereas Fear & Loathing In Las Vegas has a romance for the stories and the myth, Where The Buffalo has a romance for the man and the process, and both have it for his personal style, politics and priorities.

:D
