Never been, there, but from the very few National Geographic specials, it shows to be a very beautiful and special place. They have invented many things for the world (fireworks, the clock, printing, compass, magnets for health, acupuncture, papermaking, the formula for porcelain, and don't forget silk, etc.). I like to see Chinese painting, the old kind, where a line represents a large part of something drawn in fluid motion. A great talent. Fine ink, hand ground on a fine inkstone. Chinese characters done slowly, carefully. Beautiful, though I cannot read them. And let us not forget tea!

I will never forget a book I read called "The Gay Genius". It was about the life of the famous Chinese poet Su Tung Po. It showed me a beautiful yet cruel world of older times. The poor could not afford to learn the higher beautiful arts of any kind, and those of influence that were so inclined had to be so very careful it did not offend any powerful person. The poor artisans did things like carving, building design, pottery, etc. It reminded one of the middle ages, where everyone had to have a marketable skill or item for sale, something to teach or be in the military. Somehow things don't change much for civilization over the aeons, just the trappings. It showed the power of the indomitable spirit as they did ship him off to a wild island as punishment for some political offense at the end of his life no less. Yes, some things never really do change.

Ah well, the foreign readers will understand. I guess in the midst of so much cruelty beauty had to be found as a balance or else all would have perished. Confucious would have appreciated that.
