Nuclear power has to be a lizzie invention. There is absolutely nothing you can do with the leftovers that is safe. I think radiation should be left in the earth where it belongs. An article said Japan has 54 reactors. Just on the news an American that lives over there is saying that he thinks they are "talking around it" due to cultural mores. However, this is an EMERGENCY of the XX kind!! Americans would just say "This, this and this is the problem, how can we fix it?" As it is, it makes the Japanese look like they are lying. And the news did say that Japanese power company that owns them has not provided truth in past nuclear issues; same with the maker of the plants. What is so scary to me, what I am seeing and learning from this experience, is how EASY it is for a nuclear plant to go neon. All that has to happen is for the electricity to go out. That's it. Generators can only last so long as a tank of gas. And if the elec is out, you can't access gas. And the battery backup.....puuulleeeze! What battery anything can keep those huge systems running any length of reasonable time? The way I see it, if the power goes out, you only have maybe 5-10 hours (IF the backups kick in) to get some power restored. The problem is the heat that takes TIME (with continued effort) to cool off. And did you note that one plant uses plutonium? Of all things. Wonder how many of ours use it. Wonder how many of ours have decent double backup systems. Most of them don't have earthquake fittings. Considering the Madrid Fault in the middle of the US, not a good idea. |
