The toll is not in. I also heard mentioned several times on the Al-Jazeera feed that they wouldn't be able to warn people on the small Islands (and that the waves were higher than the Islands). I pulled these numbers earlier. Interestingly, the only three I found with these numbers were two 'market' articles and one 'Jerusalem Post'.

From earlier, missing ship and train: Japan tsunami 'carries away ship with 100 people' (AFP) – 47 minutes ago TOKYO — A ship carrying about 100 people was swept away by the huge tsunami that hit Japan on Friday and its fate was unknown, public broadcaster NHK reported, citing Miyagi prefecture police. The ship was owned by a shipbuilder in Ishinomaki, Miyagi, said Kyodo News. No further information was immediately available from Japanese media or prefectural police which AFP reached by telephone. Friday's massive quake struck just under 400 kilometres (250 miles) northeast of Tokyo, creating a 10-metre (33 feet) tsunami wave that hit the Pacific coast of Honshu island near Sendai city. The monster wave wreaked vast destruction, smashing ships into towns and tearing away entire houses. Television footage shot from a helicopter showed a large whirlpool offshore created by the tsunami that tossed around ships. The quake was the largest ever to hit Japan, the fifth strongest tremor worldwide since 1900 and the seventh strongest in history, according to the US Geological Survey and Japanese seismologists. http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5g4IrlyKqDrT3Vydv4cH8dAkctqPA?docId=CNG.3db73e338cd71300fac7b69ba735e0eb.6b1 Passenger train missing in tsunami-hit Japan: Kyodo Agence France-Presse Posted at 03/11/2011 9:40 PM | Updated as of 03/11/2011 10:18 PM TOKYO, Japan - A passenger train with an unknown number of people aboard was unaccounted for in a tsunami-hit part of coastal Japan, Kyodo News reported Friday, citing police. The East Japan Railway Co. train was running near Nobiru Station on the Senseki Line connecting Sendai to Ishinomaki when a massive quake hit, triggering a 10-metre (33-foot) tsunami, the report said. http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/global-filipino/world/03/11/11/passenger-train-missing-tsunami-hit-japan-kyodo |

When the earthquake happened the commuter trains stopped and everyone had to get out... wherever they happened to stop... and had to walk to their destinations, home or wherever, and what really got me though was hearing on the Al-Jazeera news broadcast, twice, that communications had shut down and that people couldn't use their mobile phones, not even to text, which didn't make sense to me. I missed hearing why the first time and inclined my ear to hear the second time it was mentioned but still didn't make it out when the "because" portion was spoken, it's as if the words were blurred. Eventually, a written memo on the screen said "All communications cut after earthquake". Still didn't explain why that was and I thought it was a bit suspicious. It reminded me of the ordeal in Egypt, when communications were cut. Aren't mobile phones reliant on satellites? As long as you have battery power to your phone I don't see any reason why the communication would be cut off. Edited by yass, Mar 11 2011, 10:25 PM.

(AP Photo) (CBS/AP) CRESCENT CITY, Calif. - A California town that suffered terrible damage and loss of life in a 1964 tsunami was again struck by disaster today, as a tsunami triggered by the massive earthquake in Japan caused millions of dollars of damage to the town's harbor. Four people were reported swept out to sea, and KTVL reports crews are working to rescue one person still missing. The tide began rising shortly after 7:30 a.m. along beaches in Crescent City, a fishing town of about 7,000 near the Oregon border. The highest wave was measured at 8.1 feet, reports CBS Affiliate KTVL. "There has been major damage to our harbor," Crescent City Councilman Richard Enea told CBS News. "At least 35 boats by count so far have been damaged or destroyed by the surges and the tsunamis. Our docks have been destroyed." Enea said the water receding from the harbor leaves boats stuck on the mud at the bottom of the harbor, and then when the surging tsunami waters racing back in, the boats are just dislodged from their mornings and overturned - "tossed about" and smashing into one another. Local officials activated tsunami warning sirens in Del Norte and Humboldt counties at dawn, and sheriff's deputies went door to door in Crescent City at dawn to urge residents in low-lying areas to seek higher ground. Officials are telling residents that the waves may not peak until an hour or two after the tsunami's initial arrival. By mid-morning, waves were crashing against the 30-foot bluffs, as residents gathered on the overlooks to witness the spectacle. At the harbor, officials scrambled to secure fishing boats as surging water knocked some loose from their docks. On March 28, 1964, a tsunami produced by the 9.2-magnitude earthquake that struck in Prince William Sound, Ala., caused a series of waves to slash across the shores of Washington, Oregon and California, killing 128 people. Eleven people died in Crescent City - the only tsunami-related deaths on the continental U.S. The topography of Crescent City's coastline in effect channeled the force of a tsunami inland. The city's commercial district was flattened, and fuel tanks burned. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2011/03/11/national/main20042243.shtml Edited by yass, Mar 11 2011, 10:37 PM.

Tsunami: Santa Cruz braces for more damage March 11, 2011 | 1:35 pm Santa Cruz officials are bracing for more damage into the afternoon as high tide is expected to hit around 4 p.m. As a precautionary measure, police have closed roads around the Santa Cruz Boardwalk, municipal wharf and yacht harbor, said Santa Cruz Police Department Deputy Chief Steve Clark. Already, waves have "capsized several boats" at the yacht harbor, Clark said, and authorities expect more damage. So far, no tsunami-related injuries have been reported in Santa Cruz. Santa Cruz County spokesman Enrique Sahagun said the first waves reached land about 7:45 a.m. At Santa Cruz Yacht Harbor, the swells pushed and bumped boats together and broke some docks, but total damage is unknown thus far, Sahagun said. "The water is pushing the boats together like a major car collision on Highway 405 or another big highway," he said. http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/2011/03/tsunami-santa-cruz-braces-for-more-damage-when-high-tide-hits.html Edited by yass, Mar 11 2011, 10:36 PM.
