October Hunter's Moon The Full Moon of October is on the 22nd at 9:37PM EDT. It was known as the "Hunter's Moon" to colonial Americans because hunters filling the larder for winter exploited the minimal cover for game animals provided in fields harvested during the "Harvest Moon" of September. In one year out of every three the first full moon following the Autumn Equinox falls in October making the Full Moon of October the "Harvest Moon." During this time the path of the rising and setting Moon makes an angle with the horizon which reduces the normal 50 minute difference in time of rising on consecutive nights to 30 minutes or less depending on latitude. For those in the northern United States or Canada and Europe it can be as little as 20 or even 10 minutes. The Celts also called it the "Harvest Moon" and medieval English called it the "Blood Moon." The Chinese call it the "Kindly Moon." Northern Michigan Anishnaabe (Chippewa and Ojibwe) call it "Binaakwe-giizis" (Falling Leaves Moon). This lunation (10/7 to 11/6) is 1086 of the series established by Brown in 1923. It is 29.42 days long. Perigee is on the 6th when the Moon is at a distance of 56.36 earth radii (223,355 mi.). The Moon is 12.8% farther at apogee (63.56 Earth Radii) on the 18th. Here an Owl glides silently over the standing stones of Callanish, or Calanais on the Isle of Lewis, in Scotland’s Outer Hebrides, exploiting it’s light. The Hunters Moon is also known by it’s Anglo-Saxon name of Blood Moon, as this was around the time surplus livestock would be slaughters before the onset of winter in times of old. Although widely adopted by the English speaking world, Hunters Moon is really the Native American name. |
