What is SHEM? The Mesopotamian texts referS to the inner enclosures of temples, or to the heavenly journeys of the gods, or even to instances where mortals ascended to the heavens. The Sumerian term mu or its Semitic derivatives shu-mu ('that which is a mu'), sham or shem Shamu the killer whale. |

Genesis 11:2-8 4 And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plane in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there. And they said to one another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them thoroughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for mortar. And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name [shem], lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth. And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded. And the Lord said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do. Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech. So the Lord scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city. |

Building Harlequins Moon is a book,in-which the plot is a couple of centuries from the present, artificial intelligences and nanotechnology are in widespread use in our solar system and in some cases have caused disasters. Some people do not trust these technologies and plan a simpler life in a distant solar system, where they plan to terraform a planet called Ymir. Once Ymir is habitable, they will abandon use of all advanced technology. Three sleeper ships leave our solar system bound for Ymir, using suspended animation to keep the crew and settlers alive during the sub light-speed journey. While in transit, all communication with the solar system ends; by implication, human civilisation has fallen. The lead ship, John Glenn, is crippled by a design flaw en route, and uses all its antimatter fuel to reach the nearest star system, Apollo. It warns the other two ships, which can correct the flaw, but there is no word from them about whether they reach Ymir. The John Glenn creates a substantial moon around the gas giant Harlequin by colliding several smaller moons together, and give it an atmosphere, seas, and the beginnings of an ecosystem. This takes 60,000 years, with almost all the passengers of the ship in hibernation during the entire time. The person in charge of creating and terraforming the new moon, Selene, is Gabriel. Apart from a brief prologue, the novel begins as the second generation of people born on Selene approach adulthood. |

One legend is of a Rabbi Elias, who shaped the form of a man from clay and inscribed the Hebrew word EMETH, or truth, on the forehead of the clay man, thus granting it life. The golem performed menial tasks, but as its life continued it grew stronger and larger. Elias felt threatened when the golem eventually became overwhelmingly large. Elias ordered the golem to lace it's shoe, causing the golem to bend down low enough for Elias to reach it's head. He destroyed the golem by erasing the first letter aleph from EMETH, making it the word for death, METH. Upon the golem's death, it reverted back to a gigantic pile of clay ( MEISSEN SS>chinA) toppled, crushing Elias beneath. |
