Love On-Air Gina, the former leader of once popular girl band “Purple,” hosts a radio show called “Wonderful Radio.” When the producer of the program is sacked over low ratings, a new guy comes in to fill his shoes. Jae-ik is a cold, unfriendly man who only drinks iced coffee even in the winter. The easily irritable man and the conceited former diva are bound to get on each other’s nerves at every corner. During another argument with her producer, Gina comes up with an idea for a new feature - inviting a listener to the studio to read out their story and sing a song. The feature turns out to be a surprise success. Over time, Jae-ik and Gina learn more about each other’s past and wounds and gradually they grow closer. Then, Mira entered the picture. She used to be in the same band with Gina and hates her to the core. In an evil effort to take the DJ job from Gina, Mira spreads rumors that Gina plagiarized her songs. Gina hears about the spiteful accusation during the show and bursts out cursing on air. Gina is deeply hurt and Jae-ik is disappointed. In order to mend her broken heart, Gina decides to write songs again. |

Director aims to 'de-deify' Lee Min-jung By Lee Hyo-won The greatest challenge working with Lee Min-jung, according to director Kwon Chil-in, was to strip the actress of her “goddess” image. Lee, one of the most highly-sought leading ladies since sweeping awards last year for “Cyrano Agency,” plays the idol star-turned-radio personality in the upcoming film “Wonderful Radio.” “People call her a goddess and it was tough working with that. This movie was aimed at bringing the goddess to earth, turning her into the girl next-door,” Kwon told reporters in Seoul on Tuesday. “The movie is about an idol singer who had been in the spotlight since a very young age and the loss she feels when her glory days are over.” The filmmaker, best known for the romantic comedy “Singles,” said working with Lee proved to be relatively easy. “Lee Min-jung may look like a goddess on the outside but she is a ‘commoner’ to the core. In fact, she made her debut quite late as an actor and had a very ordinary upbringing.... She went to college and everything. There aren’t many actors out there with such a background.” Lee said, “I went to school, graduated and got a job as an actor, just like other people would find employment at a company or such.” Having grown up listening to the radio, she said she was thrilled to take part in the film. “I fell asleep listening to the radio every night when I was in junior high. It was my best friend,” she said, adding that she enjoyed playing both a singer and radio DJ. She said she thought of popular idol groups in her schooldays such as S.E.S. and Fin.K.L. for the part. Penned by Lee Jae-ik, the producer of a high-ranking SBS show, “Radio” takes an intimate peek at what goes on behind the making of a program. When Jin-a (Lee) starts hosting her unpopular show in an unorthodox way, an ill-tempered and smug producer (Lee Jung-jin) is hired to save the program. Lee Jung-jin said the movie depicts the lives of celebrities in a realistic way. “Our movie reveals the hidden, far from glamorous sides of stars. It portrays things in a very comical way but also in tune with Lee Min-jung’s actual personality, which is really upbeat and outgoing.” When asked about the difficulties of being in the public spotlight, Lee Min-jung said, “Dealing with misunderstandings or prejudices by the public can be overwhelming but I do not want to give up acting.” The film stars actor Lee Gwang-su (“High Kick Through the Roof”) as a goofy manager and special appearances by rocker Lee Seung-hwan, as a music supervisor, and R&B singer Jung Yup, among others. A Showbox/Mediaplex release, “Wonderful Radio” opens in theaters in January. http://www.koreatimes.co.kr |

'Radio': mediocre drama out of sync By Lee Hyo-won With seasoned radio producer Lee Jae-ik and “Singles” filmmaker Kwon Chil-in teaming up for a rom-com set at a radio studio, “Wonderful Radio” seems to have all the right ingredients for a feel-good jukebox movie. On top of that it includes a star-studded cast and cameos by some of the biggest icons in the local music industry. However, it ends up like user-created content or at best a grossly overdrawn music video starring celebrities, as episodic humor and dashes of cheap melodrama drag the plot along. The densely culture-coded film may make a mediocre date movie but is less likely to have ancillary success overseas — the jokes are difficult to understand unless you grew up listening to 1980s-’90s K-pop, and won’t necessarily appeal to pan-Asian “hallyu” (Korean wave) fans. Actress of the hour Lee Min-jung is designed to look very pretty in her role as Jin-a, a washed out singer hosting an unpopular radio show and receiving occasional invitations to perform at an elementary school class reunion and the like. Though nearing 30, middle-age in the entertainment industry, it’s difficult for Jin-a to forget her glory days as the front woman of idol band Purple (as if to make this any clearer she’s always sporting something in the color). She is in perennial denial of her situation as she hosts her show on a whim, changing song requests to her old hits, and harassing her poor fan-turned-manager Dae-geun (Lee Gwang-soo) for her own shortcomings. Producer Jae-hyeok (Lee Jung-jin), known for getting the job done but notorious for his less-than-pleasant personality, is hired to save “Wonderful Radio” from its pitiful state — and as expected, to bicker with Jin-a before eventually romancing her. On top of feigning a romantic comedy (the chemistry between the two leads is almost non-existent), “Radio” sets out to be a coming-of-age film as it traces Jin-a’s efforts to pull herself out of a slump. Jae-hyeok challenges her with the task of creating a new program to boost the show’s ratings and our protagonist is inspired by her mother (Kim Hae-sook actually brings something compelling to the film, but “Radio” neglects to probe this) to invite members of the audience to share heartrending anecdotes and belch out their favorite song. The idea turns out to be a hit and puts Jin-a back on the pop-scene map. But here the movie makes the mistake of forcing reactions from viewers not from the main trunk of the drama but rather from these tear jerking anecdotes introduced as part of the radio show. It could have demonstrated how these life stories have a profound impact on Jin-a’s growth as an individual, but simply stops short of showing her shed a few tears and utter a few superficial statements such as “The radio is my life now.” Meanwhile her character is portrayed as being more than just a pretty face but a musically talented songwriter. She is encouraged by even arch nemesis-turned-boyfriend material Jae-hyeok to work on a new solo album. Just when things start going smoothly, a former member of Purple, now a popular actress backed by a corrupt agent (funnyman Kim Jung-tae), tries to sabotage Jin-a’s reputation. “Radio” does provide a slice of realism as it demonstrates the impact of cyber terrorism, the degree to which tabloid press and vehement comments and rumors people spread online can hurt somoeone. But such elements are not enough to smooth the film’s overall disjointed flow. A Showbox/Mediaplex release, “Wonderful Radio” opens in theaters on Jan. 5 http://www.koreatimes.co.kr |
