Watching a Studio Ghibli film is a purifying experience. The magic and innocence of these movies just seeps through you.
Even though The Borrower Arrietty was not directed by Miyazaki (I think he produced and did the screenplay), it very much feels like a Miyazaki film. This isn't a dud like Tales of Earthsea.

As a matter of fact, I'd say this is my favorite Studio Ghibli film since Spirited Away. The story is nice, the animation is gorgeous, and the flow of the film is perfect. Since the plot is about a girl and her parents being little people (Borrowers) there is so much opportunity for neat scenes where they are navigating through the human world. One example is at the start of the movie where Arrietty and her dad are "climbing" the furniture in a dining room, trying to get a cube of sugar. There are also many many scenes of outside where Arrietty is running through leaves and plants....the whole green setting very beautiful.
Another plus is a wonderful score by Celtic singer/ musician Cecile Corbel. It fit so perfectly that I didn't miss the typical great orchestra work of Kenji Kawaii.
Such a pleasant viewing experience. 9.5/10

I saw this dubbed in Cantonese and it was a fine film!
The fact that Hong Kong pop singer G.E.M. Tang dubbed her voice in the role of Arietty wasn't that distracting either. One thing that bothers me is the aunt who keeps on trying to call the exterminators to capture those little people. Like what the hell does she want? She wants 'em captured but not killed. Yet, keep them stuffed in a jar. For what?

By the way, North American theatrical release is going to be sometime in early 2012. Disney has pretty much confirmed it. It's going to feature the voices of Will Arnett, and Amy Poehler.

Thanks for the positive news. Yes, Tales from Earthsea was criminally dull, so I had a hard time getting psyched for another non-Miyazaki (the real one) film. It seems I'll have to get around to this.

ugh...Tales from Earthsea...
i can't believe I bought that piece of shit movie!

I couldn't even get past halfway through the film.

Arrietty gets my approval, though! I want this on bluray when the Hong Kong bluray comes out.
