Mei Ah unveils weighty China slate
By Patrick Frater
Hong Kong's Mei Ah Entertainment Group has unveiled a slate of four films to be produced through its mainland Chinese division.

First into production is Great Wudang, an action film to be shot at Wudang Mountain, one of the spiritual homes of martial arts, and the previously announced Wind Seeker (聽風者). Both are expected to go into production in mid-October and all four films will feature Mini Yang, an actress managed by Mei Ah.

Wind Seeker is a 1950s-set thriller about the blind assistant of a piano tuner who is recruited as a spy due to his exceptional hearing. It stars Tony Leung Chiu-wai and is directed by Alan Mak from a script by Felix Chong.

Wudang is to be directed by Patrick Leung Pak-Yin, produced by Chan Khan with Corey Yuen enlisted as action director.

The company is also lining up Butterfly Cemetery, an adaption of a story by suspense novelist Cai Jun (Deserted Inn, Curse of the Deserted), and Chinese Princess Turandot, written by Chan Khan.

The company says that it will invest RMB300 million ($46 million) in the quartet and that international rights will be handled by its Hong Kong-based sales operation.

Tony Leung to star in Mei Ah's spy thriller Windseeker
Hong Kong’s Mei Ah Entertainment will produce four new films set in mainland China, with budgets totaling $50m.

The first will be 1950s-set spy thriller Windseeker, which was earlier announced to have Tony Leung starring. Mei Ah announced that Leung would be co-starring with mainland actress Yang Mi. Alan Mak will direct the film while Felix Chong will script, which is adapted from Chinese author Mai Jia’s espionage novel. The shoot will start in October.

Another film also to start shooting in October is Da Wu Dang (literally translated as Big Wu Tang Clan). The film is set in the 1910s about a major martial arts contest taking place on the Wu Tang Mountain. Hong Kong’s Patrick Leung will direct with Corey Yuen action directing. The film will star Louis Fan, Chiu Man-Cheuk and Yang Mi.

Yang will also join production of Chinese Princess Turandot, to be scripted by Kahn Chan (Red Cliff, Confucius) and contemporary suspense drama Butterfly Cemetery, which is adapted by Cai Jun’s novel of the same title.

Yang previously starred in Mei Ah’s horror film The Island, directed by Chung Kai Cheong, which became a summer sleeper hit in mainland China, grossing $13.14m (RMB85m) after being made with just a $700,000 production budget.

At a press conference held in Beijing, Patrick Tong, managing director of Mei Ah Entertainment, said Mei Ah noted its artist management business in 2010 and within a year, the company has taken on actors such as Yang Mi, who has widespread fan base and big career potential.

In early 2011, Mei Ah began its cinema development business in China. So far, the company owns two cinemas in operation (in Guangzhou and Tianjin respectively) and signed five more cinemas in development.

Things don’t always go as your eyes see while truth’s always hidden underneath.
In 1950s, the China Republic Government is newly established. Revolutionists in different parts of China seek chances to revolt. Everywhere is restless and chaotic. 701 Headquarter, consists of Inspection, Interpretation and Operation, is set up to spy conspiracy through telegraph. But one day in October, all of a sudden, the enemy shut down 126 military channels for 30 hours. After these long hours, when they tune back the channels, only daily news is being broadcasted. Without concrete information, operators at the frontline are at risk.

Chang Xue-ning is of Operation’s. She is sent back to the Headquarter as her identity has been disclosed in Hong Kong. Reporting in 701, she is astonished by her supervisor, Guo Zhong-xing, who used to woo her. Their relation is still a mystery. Xue-ning’s new mission is to seek for worthy who gets superb aural comprehension. She targets Luo San-er, the piano tuner of Song Qing Ling but it turns out she brings Luo’s personal assistant, He Bing to report duty. Bing is uncivilized and blind but his hearing is splendid - can even hear the wind. Is he strong enough to be the saviour in this silent war?
