Summer Wars

Wow. This was so enjoyable. The animation is superb, the story is great, the characters are likable, and the pacing is just right.
There are 2 levels of this film. One is a large family reunion with relatives of all ages visiting their grandma for her 90th birthday. One granddaughter, a highschool girl decides to bring a classmate with her and tells him to "just go along with everything". Little does he know that she will be presenting him as her fiance to appease her grandmother. Of course the boy is a nerd with no social skills and tries to back out of the arrangment, never realizing that he may end up liking her and wanting to protect her. This element of the movie is so good that it could be a live action film.

Then there is the fantasy/cyperspace part of the movie. The boy that she brings works at a technician for OZ, which is an online world that goes well beyond any MMORPG. Basically Oz is a place where everyone has an avatar and password that controls all the major aspects of their lives.
While on the trip to visit the grandmother all hell breaks loose in Oz because of a self replicating program that consumes and controls all passwords. Traffic lights are disrupted, water pressures get out of wack, basically anything that requires a password to contol is being taken over by the program....up until the threat of nuclear reactors being targeted for destruction.
The only way the try to stop this is to fight the program in Oz. This is where all the crazy colorful and abstract art direction shines in the film.
So we have a family bonding film with a outsider kid that has a chance to be a hero in a fantastic cyberspace world.....and it works.

I'd say this is an instant classic and ranks as one of my top favorite anime films of all time, along with Spirited Away, Millenium Actress, Tekkonkinkreet, and Innocence. 9.75/10

Just watched this myself and I agree with everything. This is an absolutely awesome movie. Just perfect. I loved everything about it--the story, the animation, the characters, everything. Instant classic, indeed.

I liked it quite a bit, but I was even more impressed by The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. I may have to give Summer Wars another shot though. I feel a nagging need to watch it again, which is usually a good sign.

I've yet to watch Girl Who Leapt Through Time. I'm still waiting to get my hands on the bluray coming in April. I've been wanting to watch that one for forever.

I haven't watched it either, but since i liked the family drama portion so much in Summer Wars I'm sure I would like it.

Ended up watching this recently as well, I freaking adore it. I've probably watched it 3 or so times now and I really want to revisit GWLTT again, but with the BD on its way, I feel like if I wait it'll make it better when I do sit down with it again.

Finally saw Girl Who Leapt Through Time. Definitely a nice bittersweet love story with an interesting time travel angle. Not as spectacular as Summer Wars though. it will be hard to top that for a while.

I still need to watch my blu of East of Eden movie

Yeah both movies are fantastic, will definitely watch them again soon. When I get paid I'm definitely getting the East of Eden series and movie on Blu.
I Saw The Devil at A Dirty Carnival with Lady Vengeance while having A Bittersweet Life of an Oldboy.
