Sato defends solar system from invaders in 3-D![]() By Stephen Cremin Thu, 20 May 2010, 10:45 AM Casting News Japanese actress Sato Eriko (佐藤江梨子) will join the cast of Future Fighters, described by producers as "China's first ever international 3D sci-fi epic co-production". Her costars, also announced today, are Ray Park (Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, G.I. Joe) and Hong Kong bodybuilder Lisa Sa (鄭麗莎, aka Lisa Cheng). Already announced cast members include Hong Kong's Gordon Liu (劉家輝) and Japan's Kurata Yasuaki (倉田保昭). Future Fighters is about a group of freedom fighters in the 22nd century that defend the solar system from invaders with the aid of their army of mechanised warriors. Producers aim to "put the science back into science fiction". Sato is best known internationally for her roles in Cutie Honey (キューティーハニー), in which she vividly brought the manga character to life, and black comedy Funuke: Show Some Love, You Losers (腑抜けども、悲しみの愛を見せろ) that screened in Cannes Critics' Week in an award-winning role that mocked her own image. 3-D movies are big business in China which has a rapidly expanding theatre network of modern cinemas. Avatar grossed $198 million in China, marking it as the film's highest grossing territory outside North America. It's first home-grown 3-D feature was Lam Wah-chuen's (林華全) China Idol Boys (樂火男孩) released in August last year. LA/Tokyo-based Just Cause Productions are providing pre-production and motion capture services, Toronto-based Stereo 3D Unlimited are providing 3D stereoscopic production services and Beijing-based Crystal CG are providing high-end CG modelling. Future Fighters is produced by Hong Kong-based Agog Films Productions that also has interests in video games and comic books. The producers expect to announce the film's director this summer. The budget of the film has previously been announced at $10 million.
