I am a little late on covering news on Chen Kaige's upcoming Zhao's Orphan. Since Sina has videos up for the recent press conference, I decided to make up a new thread. S. Korean Hye-kyo SONG joins in Kaige CHEN's 'Zhao's Orphan' South Korean star Song Hye-kyo is joining the cast of director Chen Kaige's upcoming historical film "Zhao's Orphan," the Zhejiang-based "Youth Times" reports. Other big names such as box office star Ge You and newly crowned best actor Wang Xueqi also have roles in the film. Song is supposed to have a supporting role in the male-dominated film that features 12 male roles, the report said. She is portraying the biological mother of Zhao's orphan. She will perform opposite Ge You's lead role of Cheng Ying, a rural doctor who sacrifices his own son to save the newborn baby of Zhao Dun, the chancellor of the Jin Kingdom (679 B.C. - 403 B.C.) whose family is executed because of political slander. Song signed on for the role because of her keen interest in art-house films by Chinese directors. Her latest onscreen appearance is in "The Grand Master" by Wong Kar-wai Comedian Ge You will challenge himself to portray a commoner with a very heroic spirit in Zhao's Orphan." It is believed that he will inevitably infuse a touch of humor into this originally serious historical drama. Rising star Huang Xiaoming will play the grown-up orphan, Zhao Wu, who finally avenges his family. Filming will begin in March at the Xiangshan movie production base in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province. Director Chen spent about 40 million yuan (US$ 5.9 million) to set up the base. http://english.cri.cn http://english.cri.cn http://english.cri.cn/ http://www.whatsonxiamen.com/ |

Since then, the most important cast have been revealed with Ge You, Zhang Fengyi and Wang Xueqi in the lead triangle of the movie. Fan Bingbing to Replace S. Korean Song Hye-kyo in Chen Kaige Film![]() Chinese actress Fan Bingbing is confirmed to replace South Korean star Song Hye-kyo for the leading role in Director Chen Kaige's upcoming historical drama, "Zhao's Orphan". The replacement came a month after the film's production team announced that Song Hye-kyo was in talks for the role of female lead. Despite claims of a normal cast shuffle, the incident led to a row over the recent statement by Song Hye-kyo's agent company denying that the star had ever received any invitation from the film's production crew or even met Director Chen in person. The statement also warned South Korea's domestic media to be cautious with the publicity stunt tactics of China's showbiz. "Director Chen wouldn't have met with Miss Song if she hadn't had shown her interest in the film time after time," explained Qin Hong, the chairman of Stellar Pictures, the distributor of "Zhao's Orphan." "Miss Song and the producers failed to come to terms on some details with the contract.... Did we meet a cloned Song Hye-kyo?" Qin said in defense, adding that the deed of their South Korean counterpart was a tremendous disrespect to the film crew. According to media reports, Song Hye-kyo's agent company issued the statement out of possible concern that Song's miss-out on the role is a stigma to her star power, since South Korean media had reported that the star visited Beijing a few times in an effort to obtain the part. Besides Fan Bingbing, the stellar lineup of "Zhao's Orphan" will also include veteran actor Ge You, newly crowned "Best Actor" Wang Xueqi and Zhang Fengyi who starred in Chen Kaige's 1993 Oscar-nominated film "Farewell, My Concubine." http://english.cri.cn/ SINA SINA |

The ceremony was held in a small town in Shanxi Province on Saturday afternoon. With the movie's star-studded cast in attendance, it attracted hundreds of reporters from all over the country and a local audience of thousands. Soon after director Chen Kaige started to give a speech, spectators crammed onto the media platform to get a better view of the celebrities. Photographers and TV cameramen at the front fell, injuring themselves and damaging equipment. About six were rushed to hospital by ambulance, sina.com reported. Producer Chen Hong later apologized and said they will take responsibility for those hurt. Cast member Ge You said he had never seen so many spectators at a movie's launch ceremony before. Director: Zhao's Orphan meant to be modern film Oscar-nominated Chinese director Chen Kaige said Saturday his new film, "Zhao's Orphan," was not a drama strictly based on the ancient revenge story but rather a modern film. "I have been most touched by the characters in the story," Chen said at the inauguration of the film at Yangquan city in northern Shanxi Province, adding it would be quite different from what the audiences could normally imagine. Chen did not give further details about the film. The tragedy, called "Zhao Shi Gu Er" in Chinese, is inspired from a story that happened in China's Spring and Autumn Period (770 BC-476 BC). The story revolves around a doctor who saves Zhao Wu, the only child of the Zhao family, by sacrificing his own baby, and then raises Zhao until he can take revenge on the general who tried to wipe out his family. Chen said he would start shooting the work Monday. The doctor Cheng Ying would be played by acclaimed actor Ge You. The film is an effort to understand the motives that drove the doctor to his extraordinary acts, Chen said earlier in February. Chen's previous production, "Forever Enthralled," was a biopic of the late Peking Opera master Mei Lanfang. http://www.china.org.cn/ |

Chen kicks off new movie based on Chinese play By MIN LEE "Farewell My Concubine" director Chen Kaige has kicked off shooting on his new movie _ a star-studded production based on a classic Chinese play about an orphan who avenges the death of his family. The Cannes-winning filmmaker attended a launch ceremony at Zangshan Hill in China's northern Shanxi province with cast members actress Fan Bingbing and actors Ge You, Huang Xiaoming, Zhang Fengyi and Wang Xueqi on Saturday, footage shot by the Chinese news Web site Sina.com showed. Chen's new project is based on the ancient Chinese play "The Orphan of Zhao," about the surviving member of a massacred family who seeks revenge from the rival family behind the killings when he grows up. The original, first published in the Yuan Dynasty (1271 to 1368), was adapted by French writer Voltaire into the 1755 work "The Orphan of China." Zangshan Hill is where the orphan hides from the rival family in the play. It wasn't immediately clear how much Chen's production will cost. His agent, Huang Bin, didn't immediately return a call from The Associated Press. Besides "Farewell My Concubine," which won him the top Palme d'Or prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 1993, Chen's credits also include "Yellow Earth," "The Emperor and the Assassin," "Killing Me Softly," "Together" and "The Promise." His most recent movie is the 2008 biopic of late Peking Opera star Mei Lanfang, "Forever Enthralled." The kickoff ceremony on Saturday was overshadowed by an accident when crowds toppled a spectator stand that held the journalists covering the event, injuring three reporters and two spectators, Sina.com reported. http://www.etaiwannews.com/ |
