Shooting underway for "Tangshan Earthquake"
Shooting is underway for the much-anticipated Chinese film "Tangshan Earthquake". We visited the film crew on location to see how the shooting is going.

Cast and crew were currently shooting the scene before the devastating earthquake happens.

The natural disaster happened on July 28th in 1976. It is believed to have caused more deaths than any other earthquake in the 20 century, claiming the lives of some 240-thousand people. The epicenter was in Tangshan, an industrial city in North China's Hebei Province with a population of about one-million.

The film selected more than 200 actual residents of Tangshan to participate the filming. As witnesses and survivors of the catastrophe, they were more than willing to take part.

Mr. Li was buried under the debris for three hours. He was finally saved by his sister. He said he was helping with the film to commemorate his family members who were lost in the disaster, as well as all the quake's the victims.

Director Feng Xiaogang said, "We were shooting the scene of survivors mourning their lost family members several days ago. After the camera started rolling, they just couldn't stop. They cried their eyes out. What they say are all impromptu things that weren't written in the script."

The film is set to be released on July 28th next year to commemorate the 34th anniversary of the natural disaster.

A film of epic proportions: The Tangshan Earthquake
Posted Image
With a string of commercial film successes under his belt, actor/writer/director Feng Xiaogang (If You Are the One) is not afraid of pushing cinematic and ideological boundaries.

Feng, who came into international fame with Dream Factory in 1997, is currently directing an epic-in-the-making, The Tangshan Earthquake and has estimated that it will smash Chinese box-office records by pulling in more than 500 million yuan ($73.2 million), a feat that has never been achieved by a Chinese director.

Speaking Tuesday at a press conference in Tangshan to launch the film’s shooting in the area, Feng said that this target, previously announced during the Shanghai Film Festival last month, is achievable.

“Chinese audiences need more variety in genre films. A 500-million-yuan box office is not hard to reach if I am able to fulfill all of my designs in the film.”

Pulling in a massive 1 billion yuan ($146.4 million) at the box office with his previously directed works, Feng emphasized that he had never boasted about his success.

“Unlike ‘some’ Chinese directors who cannot keep their promises about the box office,” he started, “All I say, I do. My movies have never failed to meet my expectations. The Tangshan Earthquake is no exception.”

Feng took the opportunity to criticize some of the films that were made about the May 12, 2008 earthquake that hit Wenchuan in Sichuan Province. He said that they were made in haste and were therefore of bad quality. “I admire those filmmakers’ enthusiasm, but film is an art which needs long-term planning and preparation.”

The launch of the film’s shooting in Tangshan followed a ceremony commemorating the 33-year anniversary of the Tangshan earthquake at the Tangshan Anti-earthquake Memorial Square. The movie had previously been shooting in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province and Wenchuan, Sichuan Province.

The Tangshan Earthquake centers on the human casualties of the 7.8-magnitude earthquake that hit Tangshan in Hebei Province at 3:42am on July 28, 1976, claiming more than 242,000 lives and rendering 164,000 people disabled.

The film has been adapted from Zhang Ling’s novel Aftershock, the story of a 7-year-old survivor who tried to continue with her life after the earthquake.

According to Feng, The Tangshan Earthquake does not focus on the quake itself, but how the disaster changed people’s lives. However, he admitted that reproducing the earthquake itself was the hardest part of making the film.

“The complication exceeds all of my previous works.” He explained that the film would have a five to six minute segment depicting the earthquake that lasted for no more than one minute in real life. “An international team has been recruited especially for the five to six minute production,” Feng said.

He added that a platform had been imported from South Korea to simulate the earthquake, “so that the actors would no longer have to imagine the circumstances but would experience them for real.”

According to Feng, the platform is of world-class advanced film technology and is comparable with props used in Hollywood. He added that his film will be able to compete with Hollywood disaster films.

One difficulty facing Feng is the absence of actual items that were used during the 1970s. He explained that it was almost impossible to find a 1970s’ bus in China, but in Hollywood even 1930s’ items are easy to find and subsequently be used in movie making.

“I just do not understand why we had to get rid of everything old,” Feng commented. He said that without the original buses it was impossible to shoot street scenes and that it was a waste to build old buses just for the background. “Luckily we received a lot of help from people who volunteered to send us their belongings reflecting that time in history.”

Another obstacle facing Feng is funding. Despite the fact that investment in The Tangshan Earthquake has exceeded a record 200 million yuan ($29.28 million), Feng explained that to build a ruined Tangshan alone had cost 5 million yuan ($732,000). Most actors had lowered their payment rates to save money for the film, Feng said. Feng’s wife and actress Xu Fan (A Sigh), who plays the heroine’s birth mother, sacrificed her salary.

The film is Xu’s latest cooperation with the director after the 2003 film Cell Phone. She said that their privity in work remained the same over the six years and that Feng had not discussed the script or character with her before starting the project.

“So I am not getting a favor from my husband. The reason I took this role is that no actor or actress would choose to miss out on such a good script, director and crew.”

Xu said that her role was not a challenge to her, but more like a release of her motherhood which she failed to acquire in life. “I am infusing all of my understanding of being a mother in the role,” she said.

Leading actor Chen Daoming (Hero) witnessed the earthquake himself in Tianjin, a city close to Tangshan and was heavily affected when the disaster occurred. His role in the film is a soldier and the heroine’s adoptive father.

“Whenever a disaster occurs in China, the bravest on the front line will be our soldiers,” Chen said. He added that he accepted the role to pay tribute to them.

Having worked with Feng in the early 1990s, Chen said that their relationship was far from simply actor and director. “He has my unconditional trust. I agreed to participate in the film as soon as he told me the story.”

Chen added that Feng is one of the few directors who can adapt literary classics into successful films.

Portraying Tangshan citizens’ bravery and spirit facing the tragedy, The Tangshan Earthquake is scheduled to screen in China on July 28, 2010.

Feng to direct disaster movie about Tangshan earthquake
By Sen-lun Yu

Beijing-based Huayi Brothers Pictures is teaming up with state-owned China Film Group and Tangshan City Government to co-produce disaster drama Tangshan Dadizheng, about the Tangshan Earthquake in 1976.

Feng Xiaogang will direct the $25m drama, which will tell the story of the devastating earthquake that took the lives of over 240,000 people. The story will focus on a young woman's traumatic memory of surviving the earthquake, and her mental struggle throughout many years until 32 years later when she witnessed the May 12 Sichuan earthquake in 2008.

The film will be the most expensive ever directed by Feng who on average spends $10m-$20m on his films. According to Feng, a major part of the budget will be spent on special effects for the disaster scenes.

The project will also mark the first time in four years that Huayi Bros and China Film Group have collaborated on a film production. China Film will mainly take charge of distribution while Huayi Bros and Tangshan City Government will be equity investorsin the film.

The project is now in pre-production and is scheduled to shoot from July until December for release on July 28, 2010, the memorial day of the Tangshan Earthquake.

Korea's MK Pictures, which worked on the make-up and special effects in Feng's war epic Assembly, will again work withthe director on the film's disaster scenes. Technicolor will handle CGI and most of the post-production work of the film.

Feng Xiaogang is seem as one of the most prolific and profitable filmmakers in China. His recent romantic comedy If You Are the One grossed $51.17m (RMB350) in January and became the highest-grossing Chinese-language film in Chinese film history.
