City Under Siege, breaking new ground By Mao Renjie With his latest work City Under Siege set to screen August 6, Hong Kong writer/director Benny Chan sat down with the Global Times to share his thoughts on Chinese mainland-Hong Kong co-produc-tions, the action film genre, special effects, sci-fi and his new film that combines them all. With blockbusters New Police Story, Rob-B-Hood and Connected, Chan is among the first directors to find success with Chinese mainland-Hong Kong co-productions. In his opinion, co-production projects are a must, as the Hong Kong film industry is witnessing a decline. "Directing is a profession that requires me to always make films for audiences, not bound by regions as film is a universal language," Chan said, adding that Hong Kong directors should look outside their circle and see the vast mainland audience wanting good quality works. Chan said that his secret to success is making entertaining films - most of his works are modern action movies. He admitted that mainland and Hong Kong audiences have different tastes, which should both be catered to, but an understandable storyline, exciting and tense atmosphere, big special-effects scenes and a humanized look into relationships are a shared focus of audiences worldwide. "If you pay attention to these aspects, you can make a film popular to the whole world," he said. Starring Aaron Kwok and Shu Qi, City Under Siege is yet another action film from Chan, but this time with a sci-fi theme. Set in Hong Kong in 2015, the film centers on how Sunny (Kwok) accidentally gains super powers after being poisoned by biological gas. He becomes a superhero and falls in love with TV anchor Angel (Shu). When asked why he made yet another action film, Chan answered honestly that besides his own interest in the film genre, it is unlikely for him to venture into different spheres as investors only want to pay him to make what he is known for: popular action films. Still, he emphasized that City Under Siege is different from his previous works, especially from the sci-fi and special effects aspects. According to Chan, most of his works have been crime and gangster films, close to real life, but he has always wanted to try something new. City Under Siege is his latest attempt at a wider field, combining action with special effects. Chan said that with its futuristic backdrop and superhero theme, City Under Siege fills a void in the local film industry. "Chinese directors tend to shy away from sci-fi-themed films as we are lagging behind Hollywood in this area," he said. "We also have our own strengths," he added, saying that although Hollywood excels in special effects and big scenes, they cannot compete with Chinese filmmakers in terms of action. "I decided to combine Sunny's superpowers with Chinese kung fu, which I hope will bring a new experience to the audience." Chan explained that when it comes to genre, City Under Siege is neither a pure action film nor sci-fi movie, but a creative "super-powered" action film. He added that he plans to continue his work in co-productions and hopes for a more open cooperative environment in the future that provides greater scope for directors' artistic freedom. http://life.globaltimes.cn/ |

City Under Siege Sunny (Aaron Kwok) is a clown in a circus act but he aspires to be a top performer just like his dad, The King of Flying Knife. While in Malaysia, Sunny and a few of his circus performer friends go for a treasure hunt, stumbling upon barrels of bio-chemicals left from the war. Upon returning, some of the members are mutating due to inhaling the bio-chemicals but Sunny seems fine from the exposure. They gain extraordinary superhuman powers. The leader of the entertainment outfit Chang Tai Chu (Colin Chou) decides to use this newfound strength to do evil. As there is an increase of crime in the city, the media and the police get involved. Kungfu master Suan Hou (Wu Jing) and policewoman Xin Hua (Zhang Jin Chu) enter the fray, while Angel (Shu Qi), a reporter who is recently demoted, also pursues the case in hopes of rescuing her flagging career.
