Singapore’s Boku Films to co-produce The Host sequel By Jean Noh Singaporean production company Boku Films has signed an MOU with Korea’s Chungeorahm to co-produce and invest $5m in the Korean sequel to hit monster movie The Host. Chungeorahm CEO Choi Yong-bae signed the deal with Boku Films head Kelvin Tong last night at the Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival (PiFan) during the Network of Asian Fantastic Films (NAFF) Singapore Spotlight event. Also present was Kenneth Tan, head of Singapore’s Media Development Authority (MDA), which will contribute 50% or $2.5m of Boku Films’ investment. The original The Host, directed by Bong Joon-ho, clocked up 13 million admissions on local release in 2006 and remains Korea’s top box office hit to date. It was also sold to 134 countries. A director is yet to be announced for the sequel. Manga artist Kang Full previously worked on drafts of a script, but Choi notes that the story has been evolving past that. The film’s projected budget is KW12bn, which when first announced last year was “in the $12m range”, but fluctuating exchange rates have brought the budget in dollar terms down to $9.6m. “We’re pleased to be working with Boku Films and the MDA on this global co-production,” Choi Yong-bae told Screendaily. “SK Telecom has already invested funds for development and planning of the sequel, which we aim to have completed in 2010.” Chungeorahm previously did a deal with Ning Hao’s Stoneman Films for a Chinese sequel. “We’ll call the Korean sequel The Host 2, not to be confused with the China version, which right now we can just refer to as the Chinese sequel,” notes Choi. “I’ll be meeting with Ning Hao next month to discuss further developments.” Boku Films has also seen a top box office hit in Singapore with The Maid and produced the award-winning Rule #1 while MDA is spearheading an initiative to make Singapore an international media hub with support for films, TV, music, games and animation. http://www.screendaily.com/ http://movie.daum.net/ http://movie.naver.com Edited by Hitman-Reloaded, Jul 15 2011, 10:54 PM.

The Host 2 to receive funding for CGI development![]() By Jean Noh The Korea Creative Contents Agency (KOCCA) has announced that The Host 2 is the winner of its Global Projects Technology Development Support Program. The programme grants government funds of $1.51m to production company Chungeorahm and its CGI partner Macrograph to research and develop CGI for The Host 2 by May 2011. Chungeorahm and Macrograph are to put up $488,095 in what the agency calls a matching funds scheme. Bong Joon-ho’s original The Host, also produced by Chungeorahm, was a blockbuster thriller which used CGI from California-based company The Orphanage. It clocked up 13 million admissions and sold to 134 countries. Macrograph, which is partnering with Chungeorahm on the CGI and special effects for the sequel, has worked on local and overseas films such as The Restless, The Forbidden Kingdom and Hanbando. In KOCCA’s announcement the agency describes The Host 2 as a prequel to what happens in Bong’s original, going back to the incident where toxic waste is let out into the Han River and the mutant is born. Chungeorahm also has an MOU with Singaporean production company Boku Films for co-production and a $5m investment, half of which will be provided by Singapore’s Media Development Authority (MDA). Na Moon-sung, head of KOCCA’s Cultural Technology department said: “We expect this project to acquire competitiveness comparable to overseas films in not only visual quality but also production efficiency, and anticipate this will upgrade the overall level of the Korean CGI industry.” The Host 2 is being lined up for a 2011 release. http://www.screendaily.com 'Host 2' lines up budget support $1.5 million grant going towards developing CGI - Korea-Singapore co-production "The Host 2" will receive $1.5 million from the government-backed Korea Creative Content Agency's global projects technology development support program. The cash will go to production house Chungoerahm and its f/x partner Macrograph to develop CGI for the $10 million-budget pic, a prequel to helmer Bong Joon-ho's 2006 hit "The Host," about a river monster that terrorizes the citizens of Seoul. California-based CGI production house The Orphanage created the special effects in "The Host," Singaporean production company Boku Films will kick in $5 million towards the budget, half of which is coming from Singapore's Media Development Authority. No director or cast has been set; the pic is being scripted and is due for release in 2011. http://www.variety.com/ |

3D Release Eyed For 'Host' Sequel "Host 2," the sequel to director Bong Joon-ho's monster flick -- the highest-grossing Korean film of all time -- is being prepped as a 3D project, according to the film's producer Chungeorahm Films. "Given the nature of the film and the current trends in the global film market, we think that 3D is the medium to go," said Su-yeon Kim at the company's international business division. "But this will delay the film's release date and bring significant changes to the film's logistics." The original "Host," a deeply political satire about a family trying to protect themselves from a moster in Seoul's main river, attracted 13 million admissions in Korea when it opened in 2006. Worldwide, the film was sold to 134 countries and earned $90 million. The sequel, whose demo reel will be unveiled at TIFFCOM as part of the market's Tokyo Project Gathering, is expected to cost more than 20 billion won ($17.6 million). So far, Korea's SK Telecom and the Korea Creative Contents Agency, a government agency to promote Korean content, have invested in the film. Separately, Singapore's Boku Films, run by Kevin Tong and Korea's Chungeorahm, signed a co-production deal last year, although no further details have been announced since. The "Host 2" team is looking for other co-production partners and investors at TIFFCOM. Much of the sequel's demo at TIFFCOM will be focused on the film's CG, which was mainly handled by a South Korean VFX firm Macrograph and is planned for shooting by experienced commercial film director Park Myeong-chan. "We learned that Korean VFX technology is more than capable of handling scenes that involve intricate CG scenes," Kim said. "That and the reputation of the film's original will be the film's major selling point." The script for "Host 2" is currently under last-minute revision. The film is expected to be released in the summer of 2012. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/ |

'Host 3D' bows at Busan fest Shingle Chungeoram preps 3D sequel By Han Sunhee Korean helmer Bong Joon-ho bowed "The Host 3D" at the Busan film festival Monday, the first local film to be converted from its original 2D version. Producer-distrib Chungeoram collaborated with 3D conversion company Studio Raon, investing $1.2 million in the 2006 hit, while prepping "The Host 2" in 3D. Helmed by Min Byung-chun, the sequel is in pre-production with release planned in 2013. "I was worried about the conversion in the beginning," Bong told a news conference in Busan. "But I'm satisfied with the converted version now in that it makes space perception more lively." He denied rumors that his next project, "Le Transperceneige," would be in 3D. The $34 million sci-fi film, based on a French comicbook, will begin shooting in March in Prague. The "Host" remains the top-grossing local film of all time. http://www.variety.com |

'The Host' Makes Monster Comeback by Lee Hyo-won Filmmakers promise 3D conversion will enhance chills without being a distraction. BUSAN, South Korea -- The Host has returned with an extra dimension, but the makers of the new 3D version say it remains true to the 2006 South Korean monster thriller. The Host 3D is the country’s first conversion project that adds 3D effects to the original 2D film. The original Bong Joon-ho film remains the top-grossing local film of all-time, having drawn over 13 million viewers in a country of 48 million people. Bong, who had a preview of the 3D version, called it “an amazing experience” despite his fears as an old-fashioned filmmaker who shies away from new technology. “It was interesting to watch something that I directed in a different format. I had wanted to reinterpret the Han River, a familiar space for Koreans, in an exotic way, and the 3D effects do highlight the sense of space that I had wanted to capture. The visuals also brought back memories of what I felt myself while shoot- ing by the river,” the director said Monday ahead of BIFF’s gala presentation of the film later that night. “The 3D conversion doesn’t alter scenes or the storyline in any way,” added Choi Yong-bae, CEO of Chungeorahm Film, the production-distribution com- pany that handles both versions of the film. He said he decided to execute the 150 million won ($129,000) endeavor — as conversion costs 10 million won per minute — because he thought The Host would look great in 3D and it would be meaningful to spearhead the domestic 3D conversion market. Kim Moon-ki, CEO of Studio Raon, which is overseeing the project, considers The Host 3D a “realizing,” rather than “3D conversion” initiative. “I focused on transferring the 2D experience to 3D, to stay faithful to director Bong’s intentions and not let the effects distract the viewer. I approached it from a visual rather than technical perspec- tive,” he said. Meanwhile, The Host 2, the sequel that is also being pro- duced and distributed by Chungeorahm, will open in theaters in 2013, according to Choi. Bong is currently working on his first English-language film, and an adaptation of the French sci-fi graphic comic Le Transperceneige. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/ |
