Hong Kong’s Filmko to produce 3D period drama
Posted Image
Hong Kong-based Filmko Holdings is producing a 3D period drama adapted from Spanish classic Don Quixote, to be directed by Chinese filmmaker Agan.

The $10m project is one of a growing number of 3D productions from Asia and the first to have a period setting. China’s first 3D film was contemporary youth musical China Idol Boys, directed by Hong Kong’s Lam Wah-chuen.

The production team is currently shooting a three-minute trailer of Don Quixote (working title), with 3D cameras and technical support from US and German 3D production professionals.

Filmko Holdings director Alex Wong said shooting would start in mid-September. The story will have a Chinese setting in which Don Quixote will be a Chinese martial arts fighter with an idealistic take on justice and chivalry.

The cast of the film is yet to be announced. However, it is understood that three comedians Guo Tao, Huang Bo and Liu Hua are likely to be recruited as lead actors.

Filmko has signed a six-film deal with Agan. “We see Agan as one of the most commercially valuable filmmakers in China,” says Wong. The filmmaker’s previous films have made a total of $35.7m (RMB250m) at the box office, which ranks him as the fourth most bankable Chinese director behind Feng Xiaogang, Zhang Yimou and Chen Kaige.

Filmko is also producing a Taiwanese romantic comedy Kingfisher, directed by Kuang Sheng and starring Bianca Bai, Enson Chang and Annie Liu, and preparing a Taiwan-mainland co-production with a crime theme.

Well, I guess it was a matter of time before we got a Chinese Don Quixote. The story's been redone a gajillion times.

Filmko on a quest to make 3D 'Quixote'
First Chinese stereoscopic 3D period drama, helmed by Chinese director Agan

By Karen Chu

Filmko launches the first Chinese stereoscopic 3D period drama with "Don Quixote," a US$11 million fantasy adaptation of the Spanish literary classic.

Helmed by Chinese director Agan, starring Karena Lam ("Claustrophobia") and Liu Ye ("City of Life and Death"), the film was produced with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, utilizing the academy's stereoscopic 3D camera, the first in China. The film also hired a group of 3D experts from Germany as consultants during the shoots.

Filmko chose to base the film on the 17th century Spanish novel for its fantasy elements. "Not all genres are good for the 3D treatment, we had to pick the suitable stories to film in 3D. Fantasy and myths are the best for us," said Dominic Yip, Distribution GM of Filmko, which has bases in Hong Kong and Beijing. "Don Quixote" is scheduled for August in China, and late 2010 for Hong Kong.

The company is now developing its next 3D epic, "The Monkey King," a 180 million yuan retelling of the Chinese mythical literature "Journey to the West" with a script written by "Ip Man" writer Edmond Wong. Filming is scheduled for October with a 2011 release date.

Besides continuing the collaboration with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Filmko is now in negotiation with investors from China and Japan to co-produce, to capitalize on the popularity of the original story in the latter country.

Those 3D promotional images look really cool. Brilliant even! And the imagery in the first 30 seconds of the trailer got me pumped. But then people started acting in front of the green screen......wow. The second half of the trailer it looks horrible.

And @ 1:53....DOUBLE YOU TEEE EFFFF?

Ya, the green screen acting makes this come off as being just a cheap TV show. Some of the effects are nice, but this doesn't seem like something I'd really get hooked into.
