Woo, Yeoh set to collaborate on martial arts project
Michelle Yeoh is set to star in a martial arts film, Jianyu Jianghu, which will be co-directed by John Woo and Taiwanese director Su Chao-pin.

Woo will supervise and Su execute the direction of the film, which is scheduled to start shooting in China this September. The literal translation of the Chinese title is Rain Of Swords In The Martial Arts World.

Yeoh talked about the film yesterday on the closing day of Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF). Taipei-based Stellar Entertainment, a talent agency set up by Yeoh and Woo’s long-term producer Terence Chang, later confirmed the project and tentative title.

The story and financial backers of the project have not been disclosed, but Chang and Stellar’s Taipei-based managing director David Tang will be involved as producers.

Su, who previously directed Silk and scripted Chen Kuo-fu’s Double Vision, signed with Stellar earlier this year. The agency now represents all of Su’s script-writing and directorial projects.

Stellar previously co-produced Dirt, Rich In Shanghai with Hong Kong’s Mei Ah Entertainment, Sil-Metropole Organization and Taiwan’s Tosoa Entertainment. The romantic comedy will be released in Chinese-speaking territories in October.

Woo, who attended SIFF’s opening ceremony on June 13, also told local press that he had been preparing a martial arts film, a film set in World War II and a project in which he will collaborate with Chow Yun-fat.

Daughter to act in John Woo's new film

Director John Woo's next project will be a martial arts film titled "Jian Nv Jiang Hu" (The Swordswoman's World), in which his daughter Angeles Woo will play a killer, according to producer Terence Chang.

The 100-million-yuan-budget film, which is set to start filming this October in Shanghai, will star South Korean actor Woo-sung Jung and Malaysian actress Michelle Yeoh, the New Beijing Times reports.

Angeles Woo has studied martial arts and Terence Chang believes the role won't be hard too for her.

Angeles Woo, 33, is currently living in the United States. In 2004, her debut film "Coleridge's Couch", which she directed and starred in, entered the short film contest at the 61st Venice International Film Festival.

Fortissimo picks up Michelle Yeoh martial arts thriller
By Liz Shackleton
Fortissimo Films has picked up international rights to martial arts thriller Jianyu Jianghu (working title), starring Michelle Yeoh and produced by John Woo and Terence Chang’s Lion Rock Productions.

Taiwanese filmmaker Su Chao-pin (Double Vision) is directing the $12m film which starts shooting at the end of this month in Shanghai. Lion Rock is co-producing with Beijing Galloping Horse Productions, Hong Kong’s Media Asia and two as-yet-unnamed Taiwanese companies.

Yeoh will play a female assassin who retires after killing a monk she had fallen in love with, and marries an ordinary postman, hoping to lead a peaceful family life. But as the postman is actually the son of an official she might have killed, the past soon returns to haunt her.

Also set to star are Korean heartthrob Jung Woo-song (The Good, The Bad, The Weird), Chinese actor Wang Xueqi (Forever Enthralled), Hong Kong’s Shawn Yue and Kelly Lin and Taiwanese actress Barbie Hsu. Behind-the-scenes talent includes DoP Arthur Wong and production designer Yang Beigui.

After shooting in Shanghai, production will move to nearby Hengdian World Studios and then across to Taiwan. Release is tentatively scheduled for late summer 2010.

Fortissimo and Lion Rock were originally planning to work together on John Woo’s historical epic 1949, but the project fell apart earlier this year due a dispute over script rights.

The Swords Are Pouring All Over The Pugilistic World

Tuesday, November 3. 2009

-- Rain of Swords in the Pugilistic World --

Rain of Swords in the Pugilistic World (tentative), co-produced by Lion Rock, Beijing Galloping Horse, Media Asia Films, began production on Nov 3 on Songjiang Soundstage, Shanghai. Attending the lensing ceremony were the producers John Woo, Terence Chang, Peter Lam, Zhong Li Fang, the director Su Chao Bin, and the cast Michelle Yeoh, Jung Woo Sung, "Big S" Barbie Hsu, Paw Hee Ching, Wang Xue Qi, Shawn Yue.

Rain of Swords in the Pugilistic World, said to be fashioned after Gu Long, is a suspense wuxia film that combines physical and mental rivalry. It's a cross between China's Bian Lian and Hollywood's Mr and Mrs Smith. John Woo says that this is his favourite wuxia script in the reent years. He has always been waiting for an opportunity to work with Michelle Yeoh, whom he admires greatly.

This is Su Chao Bin's first wuxia film and he finds the action scenes much more difficult to handle than he had imagined. But he adds that they have a capable martial arts director, so he's not too worried.

Rain of Swords in the Pugilistic World traces the love story between a retiring assassin Michelle Yeoh and a messenger Jung Woo Sung, whose father was killed by her former organisation. Michelle Yeoh doesn't know that Jung Woo Sung is well versed in martial arts. As their relationship develops, their pasts come to light gradually...

Michelle Yeoh says that she looks forward playing a swordswoman again after 10 years and has always wanted to collaborate with John Woo.

Jung Woo Sung describes his character as lovable but a little foolish. He has been training under the wushu coaches and finds the action here to be different from Korean films.

Barbie Hsu introduces her character as the only female assassin under Wang Xue Qi. She isn't all that mean, is someone who traverses between orthodox and unorthodox paths, the only flaw she has is her weakness for men. She shares a fuzzy relation with Wang Xue Qi.

In addition, Kelly Lin, Chang Chen, Guo Xiao Dong, Pace Wu would also be joining this production. Rain of Swords in the Pugilistic World would be released in around summer 2010 or later.

After a confrontation in Beijing, Zeng's identity is uncovered and both she and Jiang must flee for their lives. As Zeng kills off members of the gang while they run, she quickly realises Jiang is actually Jingxiu, and he is seeking revenge for his father's murder.
