Well, plotline wise, I don’t know how exactly it would start. I guess it starts with an introduction to Bliz, by me and/or Sigma, telling him that he may well be the chosen one and then I/we show him the elements and he choose which he wants to use/be/etc. . From there I join the party and then go through and explain the game mechanics via short battle. However, what would the setting be? I was thinking maybe Cratalis/GI/maybe new Xeno or even old Xeno, but what do you guys think? That’s cool. I’m not familiar with games like Final Fantasy, but I think I get what you mean. So any ideas for specific cards? |

Well, everyone has different cards they use more than others & favorite elements, but using a Materia system where any character could get be equipped with any card renders such a system void. Materia are small orbs that can be placed onto weapons or armor in the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII. They have 2-5 levels, & gain those levels using AP that is obtained after battle along with EXP (AP yield tends to be about 10% EXP), with the exception of the Enemy Skill Command Materia, which has 24 levels & gains them as the holder is hit by different enemy skills that it can learn. As they level up, they gain additional benefits, usually in the form of new skills. Weapons & armor can have anywhere from 0-8 Materia slots, two of which may be in a paired slot, & have an AP growth rating that effects how much AP Materia gets, from as high as Triple the AP yield to as low as absolutely None (all 8 ultimate weapons have 4 pairs of linked slots & No AP growth). They are split into 7 categories, in the original game at least. Independent Materia (purple) basically give innate abilities. Examples include Cover, which gives a chance for that character to intercept an attack aimed at another character, & Chocobo Lure, which allows Chocobos to be encountered. Command Materia (yellow) are normal abilities. They allow extra commands, like Steal. Magic Materia (green) grant spells, all contained within the Magic command. Fire, Ice, Bolt, Demi, Quake, Cure, etc., all cast with MP. Support Materia (blue) gives a bonus to Materia if it is with that Materia in a paired slot. If you put Fire in a paired slot with Elemental, your weapon/armor would deal/resist Fire damage. If Restore is in a slot with All, then you can cast Cure on all party members at once. If Bio is paired with Added Effect, you may poison enemies when you attack. And so on. Summon Materia (red) is all unique, & each has 5 levels. They allow you to summon the entities the Materia are named for to unleash an attack against all enemies at once, with some Materia having multiple attacks that can be performed, & some having secondary effects to those attacks. They can be used once more per battle, per level (ie. you can use a level 1 once per battle, a level 2 twice per battle, etc.) White & Black Materia are unique Magic Materia that can not be used by the player, but have storyline significance, holding the two ultimate spells: Holy, & Meteor. Later games in the Compilation use different ordering methods that show that Materia color is apparently far less uniform; one game features only 3 Materia, Fire (red), Ice (blue), & Lightning (yellow). Our Cards would work in much the same way, but rather than armor/weapon slots, they would go into a Deck, which would of course need a limit. Perhaps around 20. Of course, for a Summon-style Card, Amphicoelias would work, using Meander, but would actually probably be a mid-game get. Later summons could include Ultimasaurus, & the major XE Sauropod trio. For location, I think Cratalis would probably be best. Perhaps the very beginning of the game could take place on Genome, before he has actually come aboard. Now, what other party members would there be, & what weapons would each member use? |

Oh ok, I got it, thanks! ![]() Sounds good. So would there actually be gameplay on Genome or would it just be part of the introductory cut scene? From there Cratalis is pretty big, so I'm sure there's a lot of locations that can be used. Hmm. Good question. I feel like my weapon would probably end up being a staff or maybe a Fuuma Shuriken. What about you? |

The introductory level would be on Genome, I think, but then after that it's all onboard. I could do a staff in a more rugged style (ie. less mage staff & more mid-range mace), but I've actually been thinking that maybe blades would be a good weapon for me. Not swords, mind you. Just the blades. And yes, Fuuma Shuriken. The best character in FF7 uses Fuuma Shuriken, which coincidentally includes the best weapon overall. I couldn't see myself using one, though. |

In terms of weapons, I usually lean towards wielding something like a fistful of throwing axes, but more western weapons like that is kinda untraditional for a JRPG... I suppose I could go for a Naginata or some kind of other polearm, if we wish to stick to more orthodox, Japanese weapons. I kinda feel like at least some of it should be in New Xeno, considering that's where I first learned of C.B. Perhaps some kind of flashback level, or something? IDK. I like the Materia-like system. Makes sense, and seems smooth, while still allowing a certain amount of customization. |

JRPG's tend to be fine with western weapons. Typically you'll have someone that uses swords that includes both western-style swords & katanas, one who uses polearms that includes both halberds & naginata, etc. A flashback level could totally work. There was one in FF7. |

Hmm, I think that for weapon I'll probably end up choosing a staff (mage style) of sorts, maybe somewhat similar to a shaolin spade. Mostly because I see myself being more of a support character that heals allies or cures status conditions, than having a forte in actual combat. So, the game starts on GI, goes to CB, flashes back to NX, and then returns to CB. Any ideas for plot? |

OK, cool. That works then. I could use some kind of throwing weapondry, then... perhaps a combination of tomahawks and kunai. IDK. All I know, is I'd probably be the weakest, least-cool character. XP |

@Bliz: You're the Chosen One. Automatically the strongest, or at least with high well-rounded stats. @Alt: If we're flashing back to XC, then I imagine MLS would be the antagonist. |

@Bliz: Yup. As the protagonist, you're probably going to be one of the best and most liked characters @Plot: Sounds legit. So MLS is in it then as the Big Bad, eh? Any weapon ideas for him? |

I can never refuse a chance to hate on MLS. ![]() Anyway, yeah, I suppose I am the Chosen One, but powerful doesn't always mean cool. Just look at Magikarp. One of the coolest Pkmn out there, but not... erm... the strongest. I imagine my character would probably be more defensively leaning, or at least towards dealing status conditions and passive damage instead of more direct damage, considering neither tomahawks or kunai (which are basically just spades, anyway ) are very damaging weapons.EDIT: Back on XC (the old one), MLS' char used some kind of plasma claymore thing. I imagine he could probably use the same thing, in this. Also, yeah, I suppose protagonist using swords and bows tends to be kind of overused... |

Thankfully I've only talked to him three times, so I haven't had to deal with him as much. He came here once. While here he made a clone account too. True, true. You just need good enough stats to not be a liability. (On Black Ops they are! XD) I picture you having several moves that deal status conditions, a move that, on it's own, is weak, but when the target has a status condition it deals lots more damage, and maybe a decent attack that lower's the target's stats. A plasma claymore? Interesting. |

This makes sense. I especially like the idea of a move that deals poor damage normally, but much more when the target has a status condition. Kinda like Venoshock. So, what would be MLS' motives for... whatever he's doing? Revenge? |

Yep he'd totally rock something like that. Using a Materia-like system would mean that all of us, Bliz included, would only get two commands without them; Attack, & Item. His stats could be built more akin to Zidane from FF9, though, who as a Thief was the only FF main protag with a defined class to not use swords. We could have a card give a similar ability though; there's also the possibility of Limits. In FF7, as characters are dealt damage, their Limit bar rises, & when it maxes out, 'Attack' is replaced by 'Limit'. Each character has multiple Limit Breaks, split into 4 ranks. One of them has a single LB in each rank, while one only has a Rank 1 & a Rank 2, but all 7 other characters have 2 1's, 2 2's, 2 3's, & 1 4. 1-1 is gained by default, 2-1 & 3-1 by killing a certain number of enemies, 1-2, 2-2, & 3-2 by using the other break in that rank a certain number of times, & 4 is learned from an item earned in a sidequest, which can only be used once the other 6 (or 3, in Vincent's case) have been learned. If we implement a similar system, Bliz could have a Limit Break with that effect, as though most are basic attacks, many have additional effects or completely different ones; healing the party, filling the Limit gauges of the other two party members, sapping enemy MP, etc. MLS's motives? Since when did MLS need motives? He's as stupid as a Plasma grunt & has a superiority complex to match Cyrus. |
